ESPN’s coverage of the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship begins Saturday, May 13, at noon ET, with first round games on ESPNU from four locations, totaling more than 20 hours of programming throughout the weekend.

The top eight seeded teams will host first round games this weekend starting off with No. 2 seed Virginia welcoming Richmond at noon on Saturday. Saturday’s first round schedule also includes No. 3 Notre Dame hosting ASUN Champion Utah (2:30 p.m.), No. 7 Georgetown facing Yale (5 p.m.) and No. 4 Maryland hosting Patriot League Champion Army (7:30 p.m.).

Sunday’s action also begins at noon with No. 6 seed Johns Hopkins hosting America East Champion Bryant, followed by Big Ten Champion Michigan squaring off against No. 8 Cornell (2:30 p.m.), top-seeded Duke hosting Delaware (5 p. m.) and Ivy League Champion Princeton playing at No. 5 Penn State (7:30 p.m.).

Quarterfinals will take place Saturday, May 20, and Sunday, May 21, in Albany, N.Y., and Annapolis, Md., respectively.

Winners advance to compete for a national title in Philadelphia over Memorial Day weekend. The semifinals are set for Saturday, May 27 (noon and 2:30 p.m.) on ESPN2, while the national championship game is on Monday, May 29 (1 p.m.) and will air on ESPN. All games will be available on the ESPN App.

From behind the net, a player attempting to hit “lacrosse” must pick up the puck on the tip of his stick so that he can pick it up and control it like a real lacrosse player with a ball in his pocket. From there, the player must use centrifugal force to keep the puck on their stick while circling it around the post and into the net. When performed correctly, this move can be very surprising – most goalkeepers are used to blocking the bar when trying to go around and leaving space above the pad or shoulder. Lifting and handling the puck is called the “Zorro hold” in some circles, as it involves moving back and forth as Zorro carves the letter “Z” with his sword. Score a goal from behind the net with the puck on the blade is also a bold, dashing move, so it also fits the spirit of a well-known character.

Michigan Goal

Most hockey fans would thank Mike Legg for creating this masterpiece. The reason so many people know “lacrosse goal” as “Michigan” is because Legg scored the puck in the deciding game for the University of Michigan.

It was the 1996 NCAA Tournament and Michigan lost 2-1 to the University of Minnesota. The winner of the game got into the Frozen Four. For the players, it was the biggest game of their entire college career. In practice, players fooled around with the Zorro move. It was just a gimmick, something you could do to impress your friends. No one has ever done this during the game. That is why Legg’s act became so significant. “I can’t believe my eyes!” said the commentator after Legg scored. And why should he? No one has ever seen someone score such a goal before. Almost nobody.

The origins of lacrosse

The truth is that Legg learned this move from another player in his hometown of London. Bill Armstrong scored points in the NHL: he played one game for the Philadelphia Flyers and had one assist. He may not have had a legendary career, but his legacy lives on to this day. He was the first player to score a lacrosse-style goal in an actual competitive game. In fact, he scored several of these goals.

While playing for the Albany River Rats in the AHL, Armstrong scored four times in this style, all before Legg went off the net in the NCAA Tournament. While training together in London, Legg saw Armstrong doing the move and wanted to learn it. After watching him from afar, Legg finally worked up the courage to ask him for details. Armstrong taught the guy his trick. It was 1993. Another three years passed before Legg tried to implement the acquired skills. At that time, he worked on them whenever he had a free moment to make sure the movements were correct.

“Mike did that shot all day, every day,” said Marty Turco, then-Michigan goaltender. “It was like the last thing he did before leaving the ice for warm-up and practice.” According to Legg and most other players who have been able to score this way in the future, it really isn’t that hard. “You could probably do it by the end of the day if I showed you the technique now. It will only take a few hours,” Legg said. “But it took a very long time to achieve a result in this matter. You need confidence in your actions.”

The emergence of lacrosse in the NHL

Since Legg’s legendary goal, hockey players all over the world have grown professionally using the puck on their sticks as a shooting implement and doing all sorts of crazy moves. Whether they called it the “Michigan”, “lacrosse goal” or “Zorro goal”, many players have scored with this move in junior hockey or major European leagues. However, it took 23 years for someone to score it for the first time in the NHL.

Why did it take so long? Perhaps because the move seems like a show off to the traditionalists who dominate the leadership positions in the NHL. Perhaps because in the NHL it is more difficult to find the time and place to make such a move. Tyler Ennis may have been the first to try it in 2016-17. Evgeny Kuznetsov tried to convert lacrosse with the Washington Capitals in the 2017-18 season, but lost the puck in the last second. That same month, Philip Forsberg tried his hand at the Nashville Predators, hitting the post. His colleague Viktor Arvidsson even tried to score lacrosse in the 2018 playoffs.

Many players have tried to do this in 2018-19 season without success. Only in the 2019-20 season, one guy managed to realize the idea in the NHL. Andrey Svechnikov did it first, equalizing, as Legg did for the Carolina Hurricanes against the Calgary Flames.

A couple of months later, Svechnikov did it again. Then, a month after that, Forsberg finally managed to score in lacrosse, picking up the puck and taking it past Mike Smith in one fluid motion.
