  Team Virginia provided me with all the resources I needed and so much more in the recruiting process. Selecting competitive tournaments with great exposure and staying extremely active communicating with coaches all the time. Coach Reyes was so helpful to me through my entire time at Team Virginia . He cares so much for the game, players and coaches in the program and it’s something that always stuck out to me.

  Team Virginia has become like a second family for our son. He started in summer league, completed the Evolution training program and is now in his second year of the travel program. Coach Ricky and the entire coaching staff take the same time and care to get to know and develop each player from beginner to elite athlete. With their state of the art facilities, top notch staff and the many next level development opportunities they offer, you won’t find a better program out there!

90,000 “Virginia Cavaliers” and “Maryland Terrapins”, a fiery confrontation that is almost 100 years old.

The University of Virginia and Maryland men’s lacrosse teams have a long and complicated history. The two programs are among the most historically successful intercollegiate programs, bringing together twenty-two national titles, eleven of which came before the NCAA era. From 1954 to 2014, the Virginia Cavaliers and Maryland Terrapins were rivals in the Atlantic Coast Conference, but in 2015, Maryland will move to the Big Ten Conference.

Only five years later, in 2019, the old rivals will meet in the quarter-finals of the fight for the Champions Cup. In a stubborn struggle, in overtime, “Cavaliers” will win 13:12. Moore scored the game-winning shot 45 seconds after the drop. This match was not without controversy. After a shot by Michael Crouse (Virginia), the ball hit the crossbar and bounced into the field, the players entered the fight for the ball, but the whistle sounded, the referee recorded a goal. The Maryland coaches and players were stunned, they operated on the judges, but to no avail.

As for the finals, the teams contested the title twice, in 2011 and 2019. Both times “Virginia” was stronger. On May 30, 2011, in front of 35,661 fans, the Cavaliers beat the Terrapins 9-7.

In 2021, the final was filled with drama. 11 seconds before the end of the match, with the score 17:15 in favor of “Virginia”, forward “Maryland” Anthony DiMaio reduces the difference in one goal, 17:16. The Maryland coach takes a timeout. Now the only chance for the Terrapins is to win the faceoff and make an instant attack. Pete LaSalla (Virginia) and Luke Wirman (Maryland) converged on the point. Luke gnaws the ball on the spot, picks it up and runs to the net, seeing an open line in front of him, he shoots, but Cavaliers goaltender Alex Road makes a save that brought the 2021 NCAA DI 2021 title to his team.

Last season, NCAA DI 2022, the teams will meet again in the playoffs, this time in the quarterfinals. But there the “Terrapins” will take a convincing revenge on the “Cavaliers” with a score of 18:7. And in the end, they will bring the matter to victory in the championship.

Also worth noting is one of the most significant games played in 2009, which is currently the longest lacrosse game in NCAA history. The teams played 7 overtime before the attacker “Cavaliers” hit the gate “Terrapins”, 10:9. In this match, in the first overtime, Grant Catalino from “Maryland” could have become the hero of the meeting, but the referee’s whistle signaled the cancellation of the goal.

As for the absolute series, the teams first met in 1926 and have now held 95 meetings between them. Maryland leads the series with 49 wins and 46 losses. As you can see, everything is subtle here, which ultimately leads us to the conclusion that the confrontation between the universities of Virginia and Maryland is one of the brightest rivalries in the NCAA and in lacrosse in general.
