Many people who follow the NFL and the Patriots may well feel that Belichick is a robot programmed for only one The goal is to do your best to win. They are not so far from the truth – Belichick lives for football almost all the time while he is awake (and he sleeps very little), and this is his most important principle and foundation on which his whole philosophy is based.
But nothing human is alien even to Bill – behind the mask of a football geek meeting a touchdown of his team with the face of a person buying groceries in a supermarket, there is a person just like you and me. He also has hobbies (and this is not only the analysis of video clips of the actions of his closest rival) and life principles. It is the attempt to reveal Belichick, rather than as a superstar coach, but as a person, that this text will be devoted to. It will be much shorter than the previous ones, and it’s just a collection of facts and stories (known and not so well known) that are not directly related to the professional activities of the head of New England.
1) Belichick loves lacrosse. He grew up in Maryland, the de facto capital of the sport. At Wesleyan University, the future coach of New England paid even more attention to the stick and the small rubber ball (lacrosse paraphernalia) than to football itself. But Belichick spent most of his energy on obtaining an economic education, which allowed him to develop those analytical skills that later became the engine of his football career.
2) In addition to sports, Belichik definitely likes certain types of music. He is a fan of rock and roll, often goes to music concerts and even once spent almost a month with the Rolling Stones in Europe during their concert tour. But his main musical passion is the Bon Jovi band, with the founder and leader of which, Jon Bon Jovi, he has a long friendship: it lasts at least from the nineties, when Belichick was still working as the defense coordinator for the Giants. Bon Jovi readily changed his football preferences, rooting for the teams in which his friend worked, and, accordingly, has been supporting New England for the second decade. The owner of the Pats, Robert Kraft, completely shares Belichick’s musical tastes, and therefore Bon Jovi songs are heard from every iron at the Gillette Stadium, and the musician himself is a frequent guest at the team’s matches.
3) Belichick also has a family. His father, Steve Belichik (useless fact: he is Croatian and his birth name is Stefan Bilichich) played football as a fullback, but not for too long: after university, he managed to play a little for the Lions (with Detroit initially taking Belichick Sr.
as equipment manager). The coaching career was much richer: 43 years, of which most of them were in the Army coaching staff. Actually, in the harsh conditions of the army academy, little Bill grew up.
Patriots coach is divorced and has three children. The whole trio of younger Belichs are closely linked to their father’s two favorite sports: the eldest daughter, Amanda, has made a career in lacrosse, and sons Steve and Brian have been working on the New England coaching staff for the third year.
4) In the NFL, many famous players and coaches are involved in charity work (and even not quite famous yet: for example, Blake Bortles and Andy Dalton actively help people with disabilities, children from disadvantaged families, as well as hospitals and schools). Belichick is no exception – the Bill Belichick Foundation provides financial assistance to sports organizations, and also pays scholarships to schoolchildren and students who, in addition to playing sports, show impressive success in academic education.
Bill himself takes an active part in the activities of the foundation, regularly meeting with his wards and advertising various events.
5) Belichik is not a sadist. His methods of working with players, which consist in keeping them in constant emotional discomfort and tension, and keeping the entire league in fear (for example, Ted Ochocinko still remembers with a shudder the year in New England), serve him not for self-affirmation, but they only pursue the goal of keeping the team in a collected state and maximizing the possibilities of the players. The New England coach himself has repeatedly admitted that he understands very well that there is little pleasure in working with him, but his goal is not to morally harm the players, but to lead them to victory through pressure and discipline.
If this does not work, then Belichick feels guilty towards the players for the fact that they suffered mentally and physically for a long time, and the effect of overcoming these difficulties was not worth it.
Therefore, when Belichick’s system fails and the desired result cannot be achieved due to Bill’s fault, the coach sincerely apologizes to the players for letting them down.

For more than 10 years he has worked as a defensive coordinator and position coach on teams headed by another legendary coach, Bill Parcells.
