Men’s Lacrosse Coach Chuck Wilbur Steps Down To Take On New Role At OCC

After 17 years as the Onondaga Community College Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach, OCC announced today that 11-time national champion Coach Chuck Wilbur will be stepping down to accept a new role at OCC as Retention Specialist. In this role, Wilbur will focus on student athletes and Native American students to help them enroll and succeed at OCC, and take their next steps to employment or transfer upon graduation.

“Coach Wilbur has been an extraordinary leader both on and off the field, serving as an outstanding example and mentor to his players. While he has had outstanding success as a coach and has received numerous accolades and awards, Coach Wilbur has always put the ‘student’ in ‘student-athlete’ first. We are deeply grateful to Chuck for his leadership and the great pride he has brought to OCC and the Lazer Family, and we look forward to him continuing that forward momentum in this new capacity,” said OCC President Casey Crabill, Ed.D.

“I am very excited to be taking on this new challenge as Retention Specialist at OCC. One of the most rewarding parts of being Head Coach at OCC for 17 years is that I get to work with students every day, helping them become not just great players, but great students and great leaders. I am so proud of the accomplishments that the OCC Lazers have had over the years and of the privilege I have had to serve as their Head Coach. At this point in my career and in my life, it’s time for new Head Coach to take the Lazers to the next level and for me to take on this new opportunity and new professional challenge,” said Wilbur.

OCC is immediately launching a national search to identify Coach Wilbur’s successor.

As Retention Specialist, Wilbur will be responsible for supporting student athletes through recruitment, enrollment, advisement, and assistance with transfer and employment. He will also serve as a liaison for Native American students and support a Native American student resource center. He begins his new role in July.

Wilbur’s efforts both on and off the field have led to extraordinary success for his players: 25 have become professional lacrosse players; 61 have transferred to Division I colleges; 96 have transferred to Division II colleges; 101 have transferred to Division III colleges; and those that have transferred have won a combined 34 NCAA National Championships.

In May, Wilbur guided the Lazers to their 11^th national championship in 13 years. In his 17 seasons at OCC he has a 266-15 won/loss record. In addition, Wilbur has won 17 consecutive Mid-State Athletic Conference Championships, 14 consecutive Region III Championships and guided the Lazers to the longest win streak in college lacrosse history at 107 games (March 30, 2010 to March 5, 2016). The Lazers will enter next season with an active 30 game win streak. Wilbur was named the NJCAA Lacrosse Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2018.

Wilbur is a 1995 graduate of Cicero-North Syracuse High School and a member of that school’s Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Laura, are the proud parents of 3 children.

Haiwanowen’s
means, “He Takes a Chance”, in Seneca. It is Percy Booth’s Indian name.

“He
Takes a Chance” is synonymous with Percy Booth’s journey to be the best he can
be on and off the field in college lacrosse. Haiwanowen’s could mean he is a
risk taker but it most likely means he makes the best decision with positive opportunities.

Haiwanowen’s
Percy Booth is the son of Holly, Seneca Snipe Clan, and Shannon, Onondaga Eel
Clan, and lives in Onondaga, New York.

Last
spring, Haiwanowen’s Percy Booth’s goal with 17 seconds remaining in overtime
gave the Onondaga Community College (OCC) men’s lacrosse team a dramatic 7-6
victory over Nassau Community College (NCC) and the third straight NJCAA
national championship for the Lazers. 
OCC avenged a lopsided 12-4 loss to NCC two months earlier and finished
the season with 13 wins and 2 losses. Check out the highlights with this video

OCC
trailed 6-5 with just 43 seconds left in regulation when OCC tied the game.
This set up the heroics for Percy giving him a hat trick.

Percy
received post-tournament accolades including 2019 NJCAA National Player of the
Year, First Team All American and Offensive Player of the Year.

This was
not the first time that Percy took a chance in the final seconds of a major game.

“He and
about 10 other native young men won a national high school tournament when
Percy intercepted a pass in the last few seconds and made an assist for the
winning goal,” recounted Mark Burnam, Percy’s coach at IMG Academy his senior
year, in the 2015 Dick’s Tournament of Champions, and the 2016 FIL U19 World Championship
with the Iroquois Nationals. 

After
high school, Percy was offered a scholarship at NCAA DI University of Hartford.

“It
didn’t work out there,” said Percy. “I realized I had to do better in school because
I lost a big part of my scholarship because of my poor grades.” He transferred
to OCC.

Percy continued
to take chances to be college ready with academic work.

“He was
one of the students I worked with one-on-one to improve SAT scores,” said Asa Shenandoah,
Percy’s cousin and SAT Prep Program Director at the Onondaga Nation. “No
student is thrilled about SAT work, but he came and did what I asked of him.
His goal was to go away to school and play lacrosse so he is definitely willing
to work for what he really wants.”

Last
season Eric Miccio took over the reins of perhaps the most storied junior
college lacrosse program in the country at OCC.  Former Coach Chuck Wilbur won 11 of the past
13 national championships. Miccio was a national champion player in 2009 and
2010.

“Percy
is a sponge when it comes to absorbing information. He is good at applying
different techniques and motions that he is being taught into his game. He is
so good out there and moves great for his size. He plays hard, with a purpose and
he plays with total respect for the game in every way you would want someone
too,’ said Miccio. 

“The
Onondaga Council of Chiefs supported the lacrosse teams here. We won
tournaments throughout the United States and Canada and the Canadian’s
Presidents Cup twice with just our own kids from within our community. Teams
that win this tournament usually stack top players from other teams on it,”
said Freeman “Boss” Bucktooth, one of the elite coaches and program organizers
of Onondaga Nation Lacrosse and the Iroquois Nationals.

Players’
fathers often coached their sons from three years old to junior level 13 years
later. “Father’s usually coached their kid’s teams, such as Percy and his
father Shannon, the Thompson brothers and their father Jerome, and my son’s and
me. We’ve always had father coached-kids teams here. I helped all of the
fathers with our minor teams,” added Bucktooth.

“I am
proud to say Percy is just one product of our rich history here at Onondaga. He
is a strong left-handed shooter that can shoot the lights out on a goaltender.
His college coach knew what to do in the OT game. Get the ball to Percy and let
him shoot. Percy has a strong positive attitude that will carry him through
what life brings him,” said Bucktooth.

Joel Miller – Men’s Lacrosse

General: Outstanding midfielder and two-year letter winner…played on the U.S. unsder-19 National Team following his freshman year at Carolina…one of the nation’s top defenders.

2000 Season: Started every game during his sophomore year at Carolina…was amongst the team’s leader with 31 ground balls and 43 takeaways…scored five goals, including a pair against Virginia in the ACC Tournament semifinals…had a season-high six takeaways against both Butler and Delaware…his top game for ground balls was Butler with seven…also had five ground balls in the overtime win over Navy…had five takeaways against Fairfield, Navy and Duke…served on the athletic department’s student-athlete advisory council.

1999 Season: One of the top freshman players in the nation in 1999…won the Jay Gallagher Award as the top freshman on the UNC squad…really grew into his role as UNC’s top defensive short stick midfielder…saw action in 14 games for the Tar Heels during the course of the season…started in the Penn game…scored three goals—two against Air Force and one against Denver…had his lone assist against Duke…had 28 ground balls and 18 takeaways on the season…his top ground ball game was five against Penn and his top game for takeaways was four against Air Force.

Prep: Was a football, wrestling and lacrosse star at Worthington Kilbourne High School…in football his team went to the state playoffs and was the OCC Champions…all-state selection in wrestling…in lacrosse, he was three times all-Ohio and two-time first team all-Midwest…was team captain his senior year and high school All-America…nominated for U.S. National Under-19 team membership.

Rugby football in the UK and Canada

Princeton – Columbia – Yale – Rutgers

Following the introduction of rugby-style rules in American football, Camp became a regular participant in the Massasoit House conventions, where the rules were discussed and changed. Modernization and innovation (1906-1930)
