90,000 A Brief History of Lacrosse in Canada
Known as Canada’s only official national sport from 1859 to 1994, the game of lacrosse has been in the country since the 17th century. By the early 20th century, it was the most dominant sport in the country. Read on to learn more about his history and how it became so popular in Canada.
Beginning of First Nations
The first peoples, the indigenous peoples of Canada, were seen playing lacrosse as early as the 17th century by European settlers. The Algonquin people named him Baggathaway, and the Iroquois nation named him Tevaaraton. The First Nations played a game for their Creator as it was a way to show them their gratitude to the Great Spirit.
The name came from French settlers who believed that the stick looked like a greedy or bishop’s staff. Crozier in French is “cross”, so they started calling the game “La Crosse” and the term is clearly stuck. It wasn’t until the 1800s that the people of Montreal became interested in the sport, and they started playing games against the First Nations.
Our country, our game
Patriot William George Pearce is known as the father of modern lacrosse. In the 1860s, he produced a pamphlet detailing the rules and regulations for the sport. He also replaced a deer ball with one made of solid rubber. In 1867, Dr. Pierce’s Montreal Lacrosse Club organized a conference to establish the National Lacrosse Association (now known as the Canadian Lacrosse Association).
It was North America’s first national sports authority. Its goal was to standardize rules, organize national championships, and “encourage good scholarships and unity across the country,” according to the CLA website. The organization’s motto was “Our country, our game”. By the end of 1867, there were 80 lacrosse clubs operating in Canada.
Modern lacrosse
At the turn of the 20th century, lacrosse was the most dominant sport in Canada. CLA now recognizes four distinct disciplines: box, male, female, and interlacross. The Box became popular in the 1930s as teams took advantage of vacant ice hockey arenas during the summer. It is still the most popular form of lacrosse in Canada, while Americans dominate the local lacrosse competition.
Inter-lacrosse is a new discipline that is non-contact and skill-oriented. “Its main function is to introduce a wide range of young athletes to lacrosse skills and provide an educational tool that will help develop training and coordination in young athletes,” says CLA.
National Sports
Lacrosse was declared Canada’s National Game in 1859. However, in 1994, the Canadian Parliament passed the National Sports Act of Canada, which made lacrosse the national summer sport and national winter ice hockey sport. The Canadian Lacrosse Association was formed the same year Canada became a country, which is why they both celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2017. The three-day festival in June 2017 at McGill University in Montreal, which has a long history of lacquer paint, will celebrate sports,
Northeastern USA – Northeastern United States
One of the four United States census regions
Region, region
Northeastern United States (also referred to as American Northeast , Northeast , and East Coast ) is a geographic region in the United States bordered to the north by Canada, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the South The United States, and in the west by the United States Midwest. The Northeast is one of four regions designated by the US Census Bureau for collecting and analyzing statistical data.
The region, as determined by the Census Bureau, has a total area of 181,324 square miles (469,630 km 90,043 2 ), of which 162,257 square miles (420,240 km 90,043 2 ) is land. Despite the lack of a single cultural identity, the Northeast region is the most economically developed, densely populated and culturally diverse region of the country.Of the country’s four census regions, the Northeast has the second largest percentage of residents living in urban settings, with 85 percent, and is home to the country’s largest metropolitan area. The Northeast is home to much of the Northeastern metropolis, the most economically significant and second most populous of the eleven US mega-regions, which account for 20% of US GDP.
Composition
Geographically, there is a debate about where the Northeastern United States begins and ends.Vast territories from central Virginia to northern Maine and from western Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh) to the Atlantic Ocean were at one time or another loosely grouped to the northeast. Much of the controversy revolves around what the cultural, economic and urban dimensions of the Northeast are, and where they begin or end as you move closer to the borders of the region.
Using the Census Bureau’s definition of Northeast, the region includes nine states: Maine, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania. The region is often subdivided into New England (six states east of New York State) and the Mid-Atlantic states (New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania). This definition has remained largely unchanged since 1880 and is widely used as a standard for tabulating data. However, the Census Bureau recognized the obvious limitations of this definition and the potential merits of a proposal created after the 1950 Census, which would change regional boundaries to include Delaware, Maryland, and the District of Columbia with the Mid-Atlantic States.but ultimately decided that “the new system had not received enough general acceptance among data users to warrant acceptance as the official new set of general purpose groups of states. The previous development of many series of statistical data, systematized and released over long periods of time on the basis of existing state groupings, contributed to the preservation of the consolidated units of the current regions and divisions. ” The Census Bureau confirmed in 1994.that it will continue to “analyze the components of regions and divisions to ensure they continue to represent the most useful combinations of states and state equivalents.”
Many organizations and reference publications follow the Census Bureau’s definition of region. In United States history, the Mason-Dixon Line between Pennsylvania (north) and Maryland (south) has traditionally divided regions, but nowadays, different formations define the northeastern United States somewhat differently. The Association of American Geographers divides the North into two groups: “New England”, which is the same as the Census Bureau; and there is the same “Middle States”, but with the addition of Delaware. Likewise, the Geological Society of America defines the northeast as these states, but with the addition of Maryland and the District of Columbia. The narrowest definitions include only the states of New England. Other stricter definitions include New England and New York as part of the Northeastern United States, but exclude Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Countries outside the Census Bureau’s definition are included in the Northeast Region by various other entities:
- Various organizations include: Delaware, Maryland and the District of Columbia.
- US EPA and NOAA include Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia in their Northeast region.
- The National Fishing and Wildlife Service includes in its Northeast region: Delaware, Maryland, DC, West Virginia, and Virginia.
- The National Park Service includes in its Northeastern Region: Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia (although smaller portions are also in the National Capital Region).
History
Indigenous peoples
Anthropologists recognize the “Northeastern Forests” as one of the cultural regions that existed in the Western Hemisphere during the time of European colonists in the 15th and later centuries. Most of them did not settle in North America until the 17th century. The cultural zone known as the Northeastern Forests, in addition to covering the entire northeastern United States, also encompassed much of what is now Canada and other regions of what is now the eastern United States. Among the many tribes that inhabited this area were the Iroquois and numerous Algonquian peoples. In the 21st century United States, 18 federally recognized tribes live in the northeast. Most of the northeastern forest dwellers, where European fishermen began to camp to dry out cod in the early 1600s, lived in villages, especially influenced by the agricultural traditions of the Ohio and Mississippi Valley communities.
Colonial History
All of the states that make up the Northeast Region were part of the original Thirteen Colonies, although Maine, Vermont, and Delaware were part of other colonies before the United States became independent as a result of the American Revolution. The two cultural and geographic regions that make up the Northeast region have different histories.
New England
The first Europeans to settle in New England were pilgrims from England who landed in what is now Massachusetts in 1620.The pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower and founded the Plymouth Colony to practice their religion freely. Ten years later, a large group of Puritans settled north of the Plymouth Colony in Boston to form the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1636, the colonists founded the Connecticut Colony and Providence Plantation. Providence was founded by Roger Williams, who was ousted by Massachusetts for his belief in freedom of religion, and it was the first colony to guarantee religious freedom to all citizens.Anne Hutchinson, who was also ousted by Massachusetts, founded the city of Portsmouth. Providence, Portsmouth, and two other cities (Newport and Warwick) combined to form the Rhode Island Colony and Providence Plantation.
Although the early settlers of New England were motivated by religion, New England has become one of the least religious parts of the United States in recent history. In a 2009 Gallup poll, less than half of Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts residents indicated that religion is an important part of their daily lives. In a 2010 Gallup study, fewer than 30% of residents in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts reported attending church weekly, which gives them the lowest church attendance of any state in the United States.
New England played a prominent role in early American education. Beginning in the 17th century, gymnasiums, the forerunners of the modern high school, opened in major New England cities. The first public school in the English colonies was the Boston Latin School, founded in 1635.In 1636, the Massachusetts Legislature founded Harvard College, the oldest institution of higher education in the United States.
Mid Atlantic
Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 became the first European explorer to explore the Atlantic coast in the northeast since the time of the Norwegians. His ship La Dauphine explored the coastline from what is now known as Florida to New Brunswick. Henry Hudson explored the territory of modern New York in 1609 and declared that it belongs to the Netherlands. His travels sparked the interest of the Dutch and the area became known as the New Netherlands. In 1625, the city of New Amsterdam (the location of modern New York) was declared the capital of the province. Settlement in Holland in New Zealand along the Hudson River and for a time settlement in New Sweden along the Delaware River divided English settlements to the north and south. In 1664, Charles II of England formally annexed the New Netherlands and incorporated it into the English colonial empire. The territory became the colonies of New York and New Jersey.New Jersey was originally divided into East Jersey and West Jersey until they were united as a royal colony in 1702.
In 1681, William Penn, who wanted to give the Quakers a land of religious freedom, founded Pennsylvania and extended religious freedom to all citizens. Penn was eager to gain access to the sea for his province of Pennsylvania and rented from the Duke what would become known as Lower Delaware. Penn established a representative government, and in 1682 briefly united his two estates under one general assembly.By 1704, however, the province of Pennsylvania had grown so large that their representatives wanted to make decisions without the consent of the lower counties, and two groups of representatives started on their own, one in Philadelphia and the other in New Castle. Penn and his heirs remained the owners of both, and always appointed the same person as governor of their province of Pennsylvania and their Lower Counties territory. The fact that Delaware and Pennsylvania had the same governor was not unique. From 1703 to 1738, New York and New Jersey had one governor.Massachusetts and New Hampshire also served as governors for a time.

Topography
Although much of the northeastern United States is located in the physical-geographic region of the Appalachian Highlands, some are also part of the Atlantic coastal plain that extends south to the southern tip of Florida. Coastal plains (including Cape Cod in Massachusetts, Long Island in New York, much of New Jersey, Delaware, and Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and Virginia) are generally low and flat, with sandy and swampy soil. The highlands, including the Piedmont and Appalachians, are generally densely forested, from hills to peaks over 6,000 feet (1,800 m), and are teeming with many lakes. The highest peak in the northeast is Mount Washington (New Hampshire) at 6,288 feet (1,917 m).
Land use
As of 2007, forest management covered approximately 60% of the northeastern states (including Delaware, Maryland and the District of Columbia), roughly double the national average.About 12% was arable land and another 4% was pasture or pasture. Also, the Northeast (11%) has more urbanized land than any other region of the United States.
Climate
The climate of the northeastern United States ranges from the northernmost state of Maine to the southernmost state of Maryland. The climate of the region is created by the position of the general flow of weather from west to east in mid-latitudes, which is controlled by most of the United States, as well as the position and movement of subtropical highs. Summers are usually warm in the northern regions and hot in the southern regions. In summer, the Bermuda High building pumps warm and sultry air north-east, while on hot summer days, frequent (but short-lived) thunderstorms are common. In winter, the subtropical hill retreats southeast and the polar jet stream moves south, bringing colder air masses from Canada’s upper reaches and more frequent storm systems into the region. Winter often brings both rain and snow, as well as gusts of warm and cold air.
The main climate of the northeast can be divided into a colder and snowy interior (western Maryland, most of Pennsylvania, most of northern New Jersey, upstate New York and most of New England) and the softer coast and coastal plain from Cape -The code.and southern Rhode Island to the south, including Long Island, New Haven, New York, Trenton, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore. In the latter region, winter hardiness zones are 7a and 7b. Average annual temperatures range from low 50 ° F in Maryland to southern Connecticut to 40 ° F in much of New York State, New England, and northern Pennsylvania. Most of the northeast is dominated by a humid continental climate ( Dfa / Dfb ). The region’s humid subtropical zone ( Cfa / Do ) begins on Long Island and extends south through central and eastern Maryland.
Wildlife
There are 72 national wildlife sanctuaries in the northeast, covering more than 500,000 acres (780 sq mi; 2,000 km 2 ) of habitat and designed to protect some of the 92 different endangered and endangered species found in the region.
Demographics
New York, the most populous city in the northeast and in the entire United States.
Philadelphia is the second most populous city in the Northeast and the sixth most populous city in the United States.Boston, the most populous city in Massachusetts and New England, and the fourth most populous city in the northeast.
The region’s population was 55,982,803, estimated in July 2019 by the United States Census Bureau. With an average of 345.5 people per square mile, the northeast is 2.5 times more populous than the second densest region, the South. Since the last century, the US population has been moving from the Northeast (and Midwest) to the South and West.
Population estimates for 2013 put the two US Census Bureau divisions in the Northeast (New England and the Mid Atlantic) ranked 2nd and 1st out of 9 divisions in terms of population density. The South Atlantic area (233.1) was very close behind New England (233.2). Due to the faster growth of the South Atlantic region, according to the following assessment, it will occupy the second place in population density, dropping New England to third place. New England is projected to remain 3rd for many, many years, as the only other lower-ranked subdivision with even half New England’s population density is the East-North-Central District (192.1), and is projected to grow population of this region.slow.

Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey are the only states in the country with more Catholics than Protestants and other Christian denominations. More than 20% of respondents in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont did not declare their religious affiliation. Compared to other regions of the United States, the Northeast, along with the Pacific Northwest, has the lowest regular attendance at religious services and the fewest people for whom religion is an important part of their daily life.

90,000 New England is … What is New England?
New England (eng. New England ) – a region in the northeastern United States, which includes the following states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Canada and the state of New York.
Some of the earliest settlements in North America were located here. Pilgrims from England first settled in New England in 1620 to form the Colony of Plymouth.Ten years later, the Puritans settled north of the Plymouth Colony in Boston, forming the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Over the next 130 years, New England fought four French and Indian wars, until the British finally defeated the French and their allies in North America.
It was in New England at the end of the 18th century that resistance arose against the British Parliament, which introduced new taxes without the consent of the colonists. The Boston Tea Party, which expressed discontent among the colonialists, prompted Britain to purge the colonial governments. The confrontation led to open war in 1775 and the expulsion of the British from New England in the spring of 1776, and then to the signing of the Declaration of Independence in July 1776.
Some of the earliest movements in American literature, philosophy, and education originated in New England. The region played a prominent role in the movement to abolish slavery, and was the first region in the United States to undergo a transformation in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. Today, New England is one of the world’s major centers of education, high technology, insurance, and medicine.Boston is its cultural, financial, educational, medical and transportation hub.
Each state is subdivided into small municipalities known as New England Cities, which are governed by city councils. Since 1970, voters are more likely to support liberal candidates at the state and federal level than in any other region of the United States.
New England is only one of nine US Census Bureau regional divisions whose name is not derived from its geography, and it is only a few-state area with clear, consistent boundaries. He maintains a strong sense of cultural identity separated from the rest of the country, although the terms of this identity are often contested, combining Puritanism with liberalism, agrarian life with industry, and isolation with immigration.
New Haven Green Park was created in 1638 and is preserved to this day, being the first planned city site created in America [4] .
History
Indigenous people
The earliest known population of New England is the American Indians, who spoke various Eastern Algonquian languages.Notable tribes include the Abenaki, Penobscot, Peugeot, Mogekane, Pokomtuk, and Wampanog. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, western Abenaki inhabited New Hampshire and Vermont, as well as parts of Quebec and western Maine. Their capital was Norridjwok, in present-day Maine.
The Penobscot lived along the Penobscot River in Maine. Wampanogs occupied southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Pokumtuk lived in Western Massachusetts, Moghecan and Peugeot in the Connecticut area. The Connecticut River Plain, which includes parts of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut, connects different peoples culturally, linguistically, and politically.
As early as 1600, French, Dutch and English traders, exploring the New World, began to trade in metal, glass, and cloth, as well as beaver skins.
Virginia Company
On April 10, 1606, King James I of England issued an order to equip the companies of Virginia, London and Plymouth. These were privately funded enterprises intended for the development of lands by England, for the purpose of trade and return with a profit of
Thanks to the Virginia Company, territories stretching to the northern borders of Maine were developed. In the fall of 1607, the Colony of Popham was founded at the estuary of the Kennebec River in Maine. Unlike Jamestown, the colony could not hold out and was abandoned the following spring. Captain John Smith, exploring the shores of the region in 1614, called it “New England”, he has made more than two voyages there, he also published a description of New England.
The next notable event was the arrival in New England in the winter of 1616-1617, in the Bidford Basin of Captain Richerd Viney. Today it is a major city in Maine.Four years later, pilgrims from the Mayflower arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts, an event that gave rise to the permanent settlement of Europeans in New England.
Plymouth Council
The name “New England” itself was formally adopted on November 3, 1620, when the charter of the Virginia Plymouth Company was replaced by the Royal Charter of the Plymouth Council for New England, a public limited company established to colonize and govern the region. The first colonists arrived in Plymouth and signed the May Flowers Act, which became the first governing document of the Massachusetts Bay Colony to which the entire area would obey, in 1629 a royal charter was signed, its main city and port of Boston was founded in 1630.
Massachusetts Puritans began settling in Connecticut as early as 1633. Roger Williams, expelled from Massachusetts for heresy, led the group south and founded Providence in what would later become Rhode Island in 1636. At this time, Vermont was not yet inhabited, the territories of New Hampshire and Maine were under the control of Massachusetts.
Colonial Wars
The relationship between the colonists and the Indians alternated, peace, every now and then followed by armed clashes, the bloodiest of which was the Peugeot War in 1643, which resulted in the Mystic massacre.Six years later, the Massachusetts Bay Colonies, Plymouth, New Haven, Connecticut, merged into the so-called New England Confederation (officially the “United New England Colonies”). The Confederation was created mainly to coordinate mutual defense, but was never effective and soon collapsed.
In 1675, under King Phillip, a war broke out, colonists and American allies against the American Indians, as a result of pogroms and murders on both sides there were heavy losses. The colonists won decisively in the south, however, they were forced to sign peace treaties in the north, where they are now, New Hampshire and Maine.
During the next seventy-four years, there were six colonial wars, mainly between New England and New France (see French and Indian Wars). Throughout these wars, New England was allied with the Iroquois Confederation, and New France was allied with the Wabanaki Confederation. After the conquest of New England, Acadia in 1710, the mainland, Nova Scotia was under the control of New England, but at that time New Brunswick and virtually all of modern Maine remained a disputed territory between New England and New France. After the British won the war in 1763, the Connecticut River Valley region was opened for the settlement of Western New Hampshire, and what is today Vermont.
The colonies of New England consisted mainly of farmers who became relatively independent. Later, with the help of a puritanical work ethic, the New England economy began to focus on crafts and trade, in contrast to the Southern Colonies, which were forced to import many goods from England.
Protectorate of England
In 1686, King James II became concerned about the increasing independence of the colonies, including their self-government and statutes, their open disregard for the Navigation Acts, and their growing military power. Therefore, he established the rule of New England, the Administrative Union, which includes all of the New England colonies. In 1688, the former Dutch colonies of New York and New Jersey were added to the union. The alliance, imposed from outside and contrary to the deeply rooted democratic tradition of the region, was extremely unpopular among the colonists.
The government significantly changed the statutes of the colonies, including the appointment of royal governors, in almost all of them. Thus, alarming tensions arose between the royal governors, officials, and the elected governing bodies of the colonies. The governors wanted unrestricted power back, and various officials from local elected officials began to oppose them. In most cases, local city governments continued to operate as self-government bodies, as they did before the appointment of governors.
After the Glorious Revolution of 1689, the Bostonians overthrew the royal governor, Sir Edmund Andros. They captured the mainstream officials and adherents of the Anglican Church during a popular and bloodless uprising. These tensions eventually culminated in the American Revolution, which boiled over with the outbreak of the American War of Independence in 1775. The first battles of the war took place in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, later the siege of Boston by continental forces took place. In March 1776, British forces were forced to retreat from Boston.
New England and the Rise of the United States
Post-Revolutionary New England
After the War of Independence, New England ceased to be a significant political entity, but the region remained a cultural region consisting of independent states.By 1784, all states in the region had already taken steps towards abolishing slavery, and Vermont and Massachusetts abolished slavery in 1777 and 1783, respectively.
During the War of 1812, there was a secession movement in New England, with merchants in New England just beginning to rebuild opposed the war with their largest trading partner, Great Britain. The delegates met at the Hartford Convention in the winter of 1814-15. In total, twenty-seven delegates gathered to discuss changes to the US Constitution in order to protect the interests of the region and maintain their political power, feeling that they are being used as pawns in the trade relations of states.
After the dispute was resolved in New York, Vermont was admitted to statehood in 1791, formally completing a certain area of New England. On March 15, 1820, as part of the Missouri Compromise, Maine, formerly Massachusetts, was admitted to the Union as a free state. Today the New England region is defined as consisting of six states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
The rest of the time before the Civil War in the United States, New England differed from the rest of the United States in its political views, which caused many differences with the rest of the country.Massachusetts and Connecticut were among the last havens of the Federalists, and when the Two-Party System came into force in 1830, New England became the bastion of the new Whig Party. The Whigs were generally dominant throughout New England, with the exception of the more democratic Maine and New Hampshire. Leading statesmen – including Daniel Webster – hail from this region. New England made contributions to other areas of life as well. Many well-known literatures and intellectuals representing the United States before the Civil War were of New England origin, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, George Bancroft, and William H.Prescott.
Industrial Revolution and the Abolitionist Movement
New England was the key to the industrial revolution in the United States. In 1787, she became home to the first spinning mill in America, the Beverly Cotton Manufactory, which was founded on the north shore of the seaport of Beverly, Massachusetts. The manufactory is also considered the largest cotton mill of its time. Technological developments and advances at the Manufacture have led to the development of more modern textile mills, including the Slater Mill in Patucket, Rhode Island. The Blackstone Valley, passing through Massachusetts and Rhode Island, was nicknamed in the homeland of America for the Industrial Revolution. Cities such as Lawrence and Lowell in Massachusetts, Wansocket in Rhode Island, and Lewiston in Maine have become centers of the textile industry thanks to innovations at Slater Mill and the Beverly Cotton Manufactory.
Geography
The states of New England have a total area of 71,991.8 square miles (186,458 km2), making the region slightly larger than Washington State and larger than England.Maine accounts for nearly half of New England’s total area, but is only the 39th largest state, slightly smaller than Indiana. The rest of the states are among the smallest in the United States, including the smallest state of Rhode Island.
Topography
Climate
Weather conditions vary throughout the region. Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont have a humid continental climate, short mild summers and cold winters. Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, southern Maine, southern New Hampshire and Vermont have humid continental climates and long warm summers, but also cold winters.Due to the dense deciduous forest, New England brightly colors in autumn, which arrives earlier than other nearby regions, bringing in many tourists.
Average rainfall ranges from 40 to 60 inches (1,000 to 1,500 mm) per year, although northern Vermont and Maine are slightly less, at 20 to 40 inches (510 to 1,000 mm). Snowfall often exceeds 98 V (2500 mm) per year. This makes Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont ski resorts extremely attractive during the winter.
The lowest recorded temperature in New England was -50 ° F (-46 ° C) at Bloomfield, Vermont on December 30, 1933. Rhode Island is the warmest state in New England, Maine is the coldest and largest, nearly half of all New England.
