Which teams earned spots in the 2023 NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse tournament bracket. How does the bracket break down by conference. What are the key matchups and teams to watch in the early rounds.
Tournament Field Overview
The NCAA has unveiled the 38-team field for the 2023 Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship tournament. Top-ranked and undefeated Tufts University (18-0) headlines the bracket as the presumptive #1 overall seed after capturing the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title. Two-time defending national champion RIT also earned an automatic bid by winning the Liberty League.
The tournament field is comprised of 28 conference champions who received automatic qualification (AQ) bids, along with 10 at-large selections. Play begins with six opening round games on Wednesday, May 10 at campus sites before the second and third rounds take place the weekend of May 13-14. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held May 20-21, leading up to the national championship game on Sunday, May 28 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Conference Representation
The NESCAC leads all conferences with 4 tournament teams, showcasing the league’s depth and quality. Tufts, Middlebury, Amherst and Williams will represent the conference in the NCAA bracket. Other multi-bid conferences include:
- Centennial Conference: 3 teams
- Middle Atlantic Conference: 3 teams
- Liberty League: 2 teams
- Old Dominion Athletic Conference: 2 teams
In total, 23 different conferences are represented in the 38-team field, highlighting the geographic diversity of Division III men’s lacrosse.
Top Seeds and Title Contenders
While official seeds have not been announced, several teams stand out as top contenders based on their regular season performance:
- Tufts (18-0) – Undefeated NESCAC champions
- RIT (18-1) – Two-time defending national champions
- York (17-2) – Capital Athletic Conference champions
- Christopher Newport (17-2) – Defeated RIT in regular season
- Gettysburg (16-2) – Centennial Conference champions
Other teams to watch include Salisbury, Lynchburg, Dickinson, and Union. The parity in Division III makes for an exciting and unpredictable tournament where upsets are common.
Key First Round Matchups
Several intriguing matchups highlight the opening round games on May 10:
- Stevens vs Cabrini – Battle between Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom and Atlantic East Conference champions
- Western New England vs Babson – New England regional clash
- Illinois Wesleyan vs John Carroll – Midwest powers collide
The winners of these games will advance to face seeded teams in the second round. How do these matchups shape up in terms of playing styles and strengths? Stevens and Cabrini both feature high-powered offenses, while Western New England and Babson rely more on stout defensive play. The Illinois Wesleyan vs John Carroll game pits two of the top teams from non-traditional lacrosse regions against each other.
Path to the Championship
The road to Lincoln Financial Field and the national title game on May 28 will be challenging for all teams involved. The tournament’s single-elimination format leaves no room for error. To claim the championship, a team will need to string together 5 or 6 consecutive wins against elite competition.
Key factors that often determine success in the DIII tournament include:
- Depth – The ability to overcome injuries and fatigue
- Experience – Teams with NCAA tournament experience tend to perform well
- Goaltending – Hot goalies can steal games in the postseason
- Faceoffs – Winning possession battles is crucial in tight games
- Coaching – In-game adjustments and preparation are magnified
Which teams are best positioned in these areas heading into the tournament? Tufts and RIT stand out for their depth and experience, while Salisbury and York boast elite faceoff specialists. The coaching matchups in later rounds will be fascinating to analyze as the bracket progresses.
Players to Watch
The Division III tournament showcases some of the top talent in college lacrosse. Key players to keep an eye on include:
- Mac Bredahl, A, Tufts – NESCAC Player of the Year
- Aidan Aitken, G, RIT – First Team All-American in 2022
- Collin Mailman, M, Dickinson – Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Year
- Drew Carpenter, A, York – Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year
- Michael Marinelli, D, Christopher Newport – First Team All-American in 2022
These stars have the ability to take over games and lead their teams on deep tournament runs. Which players might emerge as new breakout performers on the national stage? The intense competition often allows unheralded players to step up in crucial moments.
Historical Context and Storylines
The 2023 tournament features several compelling historical angles to follow:
- RIT seeks a three-peat after winning titles in 2021 and 2022
- Salisbury aims for its 13th national championship
- Tufts looks to reclaim the title after winning three straight from 2014-2016
- York and Christopher Newport pursue their first-ever national championships
How might these historical factors impact the tournament? RIT faces the pressure of being the two-time defending champions, while programs like York and Christopher Newport are hungry to break through for their first title. Salisbury’s championship pedigree always makes them a threat regardless of seeding.
Tournament Impact and Growth of DIII Lacrosse
The expansion of the Division III tournament field to 38 teams reflects the continued growth of men’s lacrosse at this level. What factors have contributed to the sport’s increasing popularity in Division III?
- Geographic expansion to new regions
- Increased youth participation feeding college programs
- Strong academic/athletic balance at DIII schools
- Parity and competitiveness of DIII lacrosse
The tournament provides a national showcase for these programs and players. How might success in the NCAA tournament impact recruiting and program growth for the participating schools? Strong tournament runs can elevate the profile of lesser-known programs and attract more talented players in future recruiting cycles.
As the 2023 Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship gets underway, fans can look forward to three weeks of intense competition culminating with the crowning of a national champion in Philadelphia. The balanced field and single-elimination format promise plenty of drama and excitement along the way.

Unbeaten and No. 1 ranked Tufts headlines the 38-team field for the 2023 NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship tournament. Playing in the nation’s toughest conference, the New England Small College Athletic Conference, Tufts went a perfect 18-0 this season, beating two other conference champions during the regular season — Stevens (Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom) and Cabrini (Atlantic East Conference).
Tufts dominated Middlebury, 19-6, in the NESCAC championship game on Sunday, but Middlebury still earned one of the 10 at-large bids for the NCAA tournament. Tufts and Middlebury were two of four NESCAC teams selected for the tournament, joining Amherst and Williams.
Two-time reigning NCAA champion RIT earned its way back to the tournament field with an 18-9 victory over Union in the Liberty League championship game — a rematch of last year’s NCAA title game. RIT went 18-1 this season, suffering only a loss to Christopher Newport.
