What are some of the most memorable big hits in lacrosse history. How do these collisions impact the game and player safety. Why do fans find these moments so captivating.
The Art of the Legal Check: Understanding Lacrosse’s Physical Nature
Lacrosse is a sport known for its fast-paced action and physical play. One of the most exciting aspects of the game for many fans is the big hit – those bone-jarring collisions that can shift momentum and energize a team. But what makes a lacrosse hit legal and impactful?
In lacrosse, players are allowed to use their body or stick to check opponents who have possession of the ball or are within 5 yards of a loose ball. However, checks must be made from the front or side, and contact to the head or neck is strictly prohibited. The most effective legal hits often occur in open-field situations, where players have room to build up speed before contact.
Key Elements of a Big Lacrosse Hit:
- Proper timing and anticipation
- Solid body positioning
- Controlled aggression
- Awareness of rules and player safety
When executed correctly, these hits can cause turnovers, prevent scoring opportunities, and provide a significant emotional boost to a team. But they also carry risks, both for the player delivering the hit and the one receiving it.
Viral Sensations: When Lacrosse Hits Take Over Social Media
In the age of social media, big lacrosse hits have found a new level of fame. Platforms like TikTok have become breeding grounds for highlight reels featuring the sport’s most jaw-dropping collisions. Why do these moments resonate so strongly with fans?
The visceral nature of a big hit taps into our primal instincts. It’s a display of raw power and athleticism that can be appreciated even by those unfamiliar with the intricacies of lacrosse. When a particularly spectacular collision occurs, it often spreads rapidly across social media platforms, introducing the sport to new audiences and cementing lacrosse’s reputation as an exciting, physical game.
Factors Contributing to a Hit’s Virality:
- Visual impact (e.g., helmets flying off)
- Unexpected nature of the collision
- Player reactions and crowd responses
- Context of the game or rivalry
- Quality of video capture and replay angles
As these hits gain traction online, they often spark discussions about player safety, rule interpretations, and the future of the sport. This engagement helps to grow the lacrosse community and keeps fans coming back for more highlight-worthy moments.
Memorable Collisions: Analyzing Lacrosse’s Most Talked-About Hits
Throughout lacrosse history, certain hits have stood out as particularly noteworthy. These collisions often become part of lacrosse lore, discussed and debated by fans for years to come. Let’s examine some of the most memorable hits and what made them so impactful.
One such hit occurred in a recent game between Virginia and Syracuse. Virginia midfielder Ricky Miezan delivered a thunderous check on Syracuse’s Carter Rice, sending Rice’s helmet flying and electrifying the crowd. This hit exemplified the perfect storm of factors that make a collision memorable: it was legal, occurred in open space, and had a visually striking result with the helmet removal.
Another famous hit comes from a Professional Lacrosse League (PLL) game, where a defender absolutely leveled an attacking player, causing an immediate turnover and shift in momentum. This hit showcased the game-changing potential of a well-timed, legal check at the highest level of play.
What Makes These Hits Stand Out?
- Perfect timing and execution
- High-stakes game situations
- Clear impact on the flow of play
- Respect for rules and player safety
- Demonstrable physical prowess
By analyzing these hits, players and coaches can gain insights into effective defensive techniques and the importance of maintaining awareness on the field. However, it’s crucial to remember that player safety should always be the top priority.
The Evolution of Protective Gear: Balancing Safety and Performance
As the physicality of lacrosse continues to push boundaries, equipment manufacturers have responded by developing increasingly sophisticated protective gear. How has this evolution impacted the game and the nature of big hits?
Modern lacrosse helmets are designed to absorb and dissipate impact forces, reducing the risk of concussions and other head injuries. Shoulder pads, arm guards, and gloves have also seen significant improvements in materials and design. These advancements allow players to compete with greater confidence, potentially leading to more aggressive play.
Key Advancements in Lacrosse Protective Gear:
- Multi-layered foam padding in helmets
- Improved ventilation systems
- Lightweight, flexible materials for pads
- Custom-fit options for better protection
- Impact-dispersing technologies
While better equipment has undoubtedly made the sport safer, some argue that it has also emboldened players to take greater risks on the field. This raises questions about whether improved gear is inadvertently contributing to more dangerous play styles.
The Psychology of the Big Hit: Impact on Players and Teams
Big hits in lacrosse are not just physical events; they can have profound psychological effects on both the players involved and their teammates. How do these moments influence the mental game of lacrosse?
For the player delivering a big hit, it can provide a surge of confidence and adrenaline. This boost may lead to improved performance and a more aggressive playing style. Conversely, the player on the receiving end may experience a temporary loss of focus or even hesitation in future situations, potentially impacting their effectiveness on the field.
Teams often rally around big hits, using them as emotional catalysts to spark comebacks or solidify leads. Coaches may even design plays or defensive schemes to set up opportunities for impactful collisions, recognizing their potential to shift momentum.
Psychological Impacts of Big Hits:
- Increased team morale and energy
- Potential intimidation of opponents
- Heightened focus and intensity
- Possible negative effects on hit recipient’s confidence
- Motivation for retaliation or “revenge hits”
Understanding these psychological dynamics is crucial for players and coaches looking to maximize the impact of big hits while also managing their potential drawbacks.
Controversy and Debate: When Big Hits Cross the Line
While many lacrosse hits are clean and within the rules, there are instances where collisions spark controversy and debate within the lacrosse community. How do officials, coaches, and governing bodies address these contentious situations?
Illegal hits, particularly those targeting the head or occurring after the whistle, can result in penalties, ejections, and even suspensions. In recent years, there has been increased scrutiny on hits that may contribute to concussions or other serious injuries, even if they are technically within the rules.
This has led to ongoing discussions about potential rule changes and stricter enforcement of existing regulations. Some argue that cracking down on big hits will diminish the physical nature of the sport, while others contend that player safety must be the top priority.
Factors Considered in Controversial Hits:
- Intent of the player delivering the hit
- Location of contact on the body
- Timing relative to ball possession
- Force of the collision
- Player’s history of infractions
As the sport continues to evolve, finding the right balance between maintaining lacrosse’s physical identity and ensuring player safety remains an ongoing challenge for all stakeholders.
Training and Technique: Mastering the Art of the Legal Hit
For players looking to make an impact with big hits, proper training and technique are essential. How can athletes develop the skills necessary to deliver effective, legal checks while minimizing the risk of injury to themselves and others?
Coaches emphasize the importance of footwork, body positioning, and timing when teaching checking techniques. Players must learn to approach opponents from the proper angle, maintain a low center of gravity, and use their legs to drive through the hit rather than leading with their head or arms.
Strength and conditioning programs also play a crucial role in preparing players for the physical demands of lacrosse. Building core strength, improving balance, and developing explosive power can all contribute to more effective and safer checking abilities.
Key Elements of Check Training:
- Proper approach and body positioning
- Timing and anticipation drills
- Controlled contact exercises
- Film study of exemplary hits
- Strength and agility training
By focusing on these elements, players can develop the skills and awareness necessary to make impactful plays on the field while adhering to the rules and prioritizing safety.
As lacrosse continues to grow in popularity, the big hit remains one of its most exciting and controversial aspects. From viral social media moments to game-changing collisions at the highest levels of play, these hits captivate fans and spark important discussions about the nature of the sport. By understanding the techniques, risks, and impacts of big hits, players, coaches, and fans can better appreciate this thrilling element of lacrosse while working to ensure the game remains both exciting and safe for all participants.

Helmet Goes Flying As Virginia Lax Player Lays HUGE Slobberknocker Hit
Third-ranked Virginia lacrosse moved to 9-3 with a four-goal win over No. 13 Syracuse on Saturday and did so while turning back the clock. As one of the most historic programs in the sport, there is a lot of inspiration to be drawn from the past.
That history was on full display as the Hoos hosted the Orange while wearing some slick throwback kits.
🙌 On Saturday, we pay homage to one of the most momentous eras in our program’s history, the 1980s!#GoHoos⚔️ pic.twitter.com/GcBhdiQKV2

Even head coach Lars Tiffany went with an old-school look on the sideline. It was awesome.

Once the game got underway, as did the action.
Virginia jumped out to an early lead and never gave it up. The highlight of the first half, though, came at midfield.
Carter Rice, one of Syracuse’s short stick defensive midfielders, corralled the ball in the open field and was hung out to dry. Cavaliers midfielder Ricky Miezan turned on his jets, got downfield and delivered a vicious blow to the opposing middie.
Rice’s helmet went flying as he crumbled to the grass below.

The hit, which was completely legal, set the tone for the game that Virginia controlled from start to finish. Rice is surely feeling that one on Sunday morning.
Although the Hoos never allowed the Orange to get back into the game, the highlight of the second half came from the losing side. Graduate attack Alex Simmons scored what might be the best goal of the year with one hand, behind his back.

It was too little too late. Virginia went on to win by seven goals and the outline of Rice’s limp body is probably still indented in the grass. He got licked!
🔥AAAAAAAA! Svechnikov broke the NHL – scored again from behind the gate😳 – Ice-TV – Blogs

Svechnikov – the whole history of the NHL: 2:0 in lacrosse goals.
Big lacrosse goals in the world don’t happen all that often: Mike Legg’s original Michigan goal and Granlund’s goal in the World Cup semi-final were separated by 15 years. The frequency of such goals in the KHL is noticeably more frequent – about once every couple of years, so for our fans they seem ordinary.
But Andrey Svechnikov made a unique achievement. First, he hit two Michigans in two months. Second, he did it in the NHL. Thirdly, Svechnikov is still the author of 100% of the “Michigans” in the history of the league – yes, no one else has ever scored like this here.
Svechnikov himself commented on this: “If I roll out from behind the gate and get enough space, I always try to repeat this trick. Let’s see, maybe in the next game I’ll score like that again.”
Head coach Rod Brind’Amor said after the game: “It’s not just luck, Svech did it all the time in training – when you do it for a year, it’s not just luck. We all want to see more goals like this, I want to see them too, it’s fun. ”
However, this goal also had a hint of scandalousness: Winnipeg striker Adam Lauri believes that right before the goal, the judges missed the removal from Carolina, so Svechnikov would not have come to a throw – Andrey’s team had to play in the minority.
Of course, Andrey’s goal was the highlight of the day. The Hurricanes tweeted “Yes, Candle did it again!” and caustic fans found a connection between the two goals – both scored against teams that once played in Atlanta (the Thrashers move to Winnipeg you still have to remember, but the Flames changed their residence to Calgary a long time ago).
The comments of some fans show why no one did this for many years before Svechnikov. It is noteworthy that a Carolina fan writes this: “If he wants to score lacrosse goals, then he needs to go to lacrosse. This is ridiculous and should not be allowed at the highest level.”
However, the American hockey community has long been much more conservative than the players themselves – so we can expect new Michigans, which in the USA will be renamed Svechnikovs at such a pace
