SM Senior Kelsey Walls Named USL Jackie Pitts Award Winner
US Lacrosse has named the winners of the prestigious Jackie Pitts Award for all chapters. The award honors those who combine academic and service as well as leadership with athletic accomplishments.
According to US Lacrosse, “This award recognizes a graduating senior in each chapter who truly honors the game of lacrosse, is invested in the development of the game in her community, is an exceptional player who continually strives to improve her game, and is an exemplary member of her team. She exemplifies the spirit of the game, on and off the field. Academically, she is an outstanding student and a valued role model in her school.”
Kelsey played for the SM team for all 4 years. As a Junior, she was named to the KCMGLA All-Metro team (Attack). Kelsey graduated from Bishop Miege High School and will attend the University of Miami (FL).
Kelsey will receive the Award via a USL press release, certificate, and recognition on the USL website. Shawnee Mission will retire her #26 jersey number for receiving a national award. SM board, parents, players, teammates would like to congratulate Kelsey on an outstanding career and wish her good luck in the future.

Purpura, Lacrosse Coach: A Man on a Mission
And when it snows, “it’s generally only two or three inches,” the native New Yorker pointed out. “So, that’s another added benefit.”
The alumni community makes a tremendous difference, too, he said. “The alumni support at VMI is a game changer. The support they provide and continue to provide allows us to build a better experience for our cadet-athletes and we all are very thankful for that opportunity.”
Two years ago, when he had the chance to become head coach of Arcadia University’s lacrosse team, the program was “young” and “underachieving”—but Purpura “saw a lot of opportunity there.”
He had been traipsing up and down the East Coast, assistant-coaching at four different schools in five years. The Arcadia job was not just a rung up the coaching ladder—this was a chance for him to take all the pieces he liked, the things he had learned “and make it our own.” Purpura has a binder stuffed with notes and lessons learned over the years—and he put it good use at Arcadia.
This past summer, leaving his job at Arcadia was bittersweet. He had poured his “blood, sweat, and tears” into the program. VMI, though, is the only place he would have left Arcadia for, Purpura said. People in the small lacrosse community told him head coaching at VMI would be hard. They asked him, a young coach who had just mentored great, positive change at Arcadia, why he would want to go to VMI.
“That only fueled me more to want to take on the challenge,” he said. Purpura wanted the job and jumped at the opportunity. He applied, he briefed his ideas and philosophies—and was hired on in summer 2020.
Soon after he was hired, Purpura put together his staff—which may be one of the best in D1. Purpura brings with him two assistants from Arcadia: Mark “M.C.” Cameron ’94 and Kevin Doherty. Mikey Herring, a former starter for the University of Virginia who’s also played professionally, rounds out the staff. Together, the staff is a mix of high-level playing experience from Herring, the continuity from coaches who’ve worked together before—and in Cameron, the added benefit of a retired U.S. Marine officer and VMI alumnus.
COVID-19 has affected the team’s training, but not as much as it could have, Purpura said. They’re still able to practice. In fall 2020, there were no scrimmages versus other teams, and time spent watching film is less than Purpura would like. Overall, he’s relieved and thankful for the time the team has together and is “really optimistic” about the team’s future.
“The fact that we’re able to practice in some kind of capacity is has really been a relief,” he said. “It’s the highlight of the day for everyone in the program … I’m sure these guys don’t take anything for granted anymore.”
The “DNA” of Purpura’s coaching philosophy includes a four-part goal system that begins with 100% graduation—and ends with winning. The program also has four core values: Attitude, compete, effort, and sacrifice.
“The great thing about [the program’s] core values is that each individual controls every one of them,” Purpura said. “That’s important in a place like VMI, where there are so many external factors going on, we don’t control much, but what we control greatly matters. We want to be really, really good at controlling the ‘controllables.’”
At the core of everything, Purpura cares about the young men on his team. He wants the team to win almost more than anything—and more than that, he wants to train the young men under his care.
“We want to serve their heart not just their talent. We want to make sure that we’re caring about the 30-year-old version more than the 20-year-old version,” he said. “We want to be judged on the quality of character of young men that we’re building.”
“I truly believe that in doing that, the winning will come,” Purpura said

School Entry: The main high school entrance ages are 11+ and 13+, and the final grades (Sixth Form) are 16+. To enter the school, you must pass school tests in English and mathematics, provide grades from the current place of study and pass an interview via Skype with the head of the international department.

In art, students can take two courses, but not in a combination of textiles and art. GCSEs are graded on a scale of 9 (high) to 1 (low), with a 4 being a “standard score” and a 5 a “strong score”.
On Sixth Form , all graduate students complete the Advanced A-Level program.Most students study three A-Level subjects. In addition, students complete The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), learning the necessary skills during 12 years of study. All A-Level exams take place in the summer at the end of the two-year course. International students take a non-examination course of the British Cultural Program and receive an appropriate qualification in English, such as IELTS.
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

Expeditions and Adventures

When it comes to extracurricular activities, many students shy away from religious involvement for various reasons. Some of our Jewish clients, for example, mention that admissions officers may be anti-Semitic or have a particular religion. While this may be true — and it’s impossible to know — we maintain that you do not want to attend a college that employs anti-Semitic admissions officers. And given the number of Jews in the top colleges, we’re pretty sure this reason is based more on guesswork than fact.
Other students believe colleges would prefer a different activity, such as sports or performing arts. Some of our students spend up to three hours a day playing sports, thinking that this will be the “key” to going to college. And in very few cases it is. But for most students, all he does is to ensure that this child has a “one-off” resume, which colleges don’t want.

Database marketing allows you to analyze sales trends and predict prospects to target the best customers and give them what they want
In the summer of 1994, Mike and Brendan Moylan, co-owners of Sports Endeavors Inc., in Hillsboro, North Carolina, saw a different shoe, both. One of the buyers at their catalog company – they sell soccer and lacrosse equipment – purchased 30,000 pairs of soccer shoes, expecting to sell within two months.But by September, about 15,000 boxes of cleaned shoes were still languishing on the shelves. Only in late autumn were the brothers able to unload the entire order. “This was our summer of enlightenment,” says Mike. “When we were smaller, it was easy to know what customers want. It doesn’t matter if we made a bad purchase. But by 1994, if we missed, we missed the big ones. ”
This legless summer spurred the Moilans into a remarkably productive year. With the help of a consultant, they installed a database marketing system that could systematically and accurately analyze sales trends, helping them make more informed purchasing decisions.The system integrates a database full of customer buying habits with analytics software that, among other things, provides shoppers with answers to key marketing questions: which products and colors sold best, which sellers were most profitable, which time of year was the best for sell specific items like sneakers. Armed with this knowledge, shoppers can renew their approach to selling. “With this system,” says Brendan, the force behind technological breakthrough, “we know we can grow.”
This is the path that big guys like American Express have long gone by: accumulating large amounts of customer data in a computerized form, and then massaging information to pinpoint their best customers and target them to a more personal character. In fact, thanks to the high level of use of database marketing, large companies have come close to eliminating the main advantage of their smaller competitors: close, informed, flexible customer relationships.
Yet, despite the ominous signs, until recently most small companies did not use database marketing. After all, who could afford to buy and build even a simple system? Who had the time? Indeed, five years ago, when Bob McKim, a database marketing expert, founded his consulting firm MS Database Marketing in Los Angeles, he quickly had to change his focus from Davids to Goliath. “With small businesses, it was too much missionary work,” he says.
However, now small companies are finally starting to acquire religion thanks to falling hardware and software costs and more user-friendly applications. “The combination of the power of a conventional PC and the sophistication of new database marketing systems means small businesses may have their turn,” said Dennis Jorgensen, chief operating officer of the American Marketing Association, a Chicago-based trade organization. However, especially for young players, creating a system is a complex process, often requiring outside help and several years to get a real impact.But hearing this from new converts is well worth the time, energy, and money.
Know Your Customer
Moylans are examples of this. From the very beginning, in 1984, when Mike opened the store at the age of 18, Sports Endeavors have gone to great lengths to keep their finger on the pulse of the customer. It was easy when the business was young, but as customers and revenue grew, it became increasingly difficult to keep track of who wanted to buy what and when.This was one of the reasons Mike brought Brendan into the business: while Mike had big ideas, Brendan had a knack for details and technology. It was Brendan who set himself the task of building increasingly sophisticated database marketing systems to track and analyze sales and trends.
He had his work cut out for him. In 1990, a $ 3 million sports company had only one 286 PCs, which it used apparently low-tech: six telephone employees took orders manually.The key keeper would print the orders on a PC, then print them and deliver them to the shipping department. “We couldn’t go on like this,” Brendan says.
When a colleague told him about a $ 60,000 mail order management system from Nashbar / Associates called Quick / Order Processor, Brendan decided to go for it. After the software was installed on NCR’s new minicomputer, everything from customer purchases to stock status and vendor names was included in the database.But the analytical ability of the system was almost nil. “We couldn’t do anything with the information,” Brendan says. “We couldn’t even figure out which products were buying the most.”
Then came the summer of enlightenment and startling implementation: The Quick / Order Processor was effectively holding back the company’s growth. “We needed a system that could granularize the data to a minimum,” says Mike. “To be useful, this had to forecast the direction of growth would come.”
In this round, the Moylans began a scientific search, hiring an operations expert to find the ideal technology provider. They ended up choosing a $ 100,000 two-part system: the uniVerse database (from VMark Software, 508-366-3888), which they installed on NCR, and an application called the Zircon directory management system (from Zircon, 617-246- 5000) to handle day-to-day transactions such as information delivery and purchases. At the same time, they created their first official MIS department to help manage this.
But with all the fancy equipment, the most important players – especially the purchasing and marketing staff – were still in the dark. This is because Zircon could manipulate information, but not analyze it. MIS should have been called for this. If, say, buyers want to know how well the shorts are selling, they will have to submit a request to the MIS and then wait two or three days for the department to analyze the data and provide an answer. If they wanted to narrow down the issue before the yellow shorts did, they would have to go through the same process again.The people at the forefront did not have an effective way to access information that could be used for marketing and sales plans.
Enter ProBit, a storage program from System Builder Technologies (currently Unidata, 800-234-5728; starting at $ 25,000 plus sales). Two years after purchasing uniVerse, Moylan switched to a $ 150,000 Data Aviion minicomputer and hired a Unidata consultant to develop a suitable version of ProBit – one that would allow buyers, for example, to click on a vendor’s name, and within seconds.see the range of data pertaining to it, or scroll further to see, perhaps, how well the seller’s boots have sold over the past three months. The consultant installed ProBit on Aviion and eight 486 PCs. MIS now updates ProBit every Saturday to provide weekly shopping information.
Expecting a slow start, the Moylans decided to focus on forecasting first. Example: Based on an analysis of the 20 percent growth in sales of Adidas watches in 1995, four of the company’s buyers were able to build a monthly sales target for 1996.
They were also able to confirm some of their suspicions. Take suede sneakers in 1995. Buyers have noticed a decline in demand in favor of more fashionable sneakers. But analysis using ProBit showed that sales fell by half. The catalog now only shows a few styles of suede shoes instead of the options page it had before. Perhaps best of all, Sports Endeavors slashed its overall inventory by three quarters and sales jumped to $ 25 million. “Now we can anticipate what customers want and give it to them,” Brendan says.
Identify Prospects
Some companies, such as Michael Hough’s A / E / C Systems International in Exton, PA, use database marketing not so much to keep up with current customers as to focus on new. 16-year-old company Hough is organizing computer exhibitions for design and construction for $ 4 million. Attracting visitors – many of them – is the lifeblood. Therefore, Hough relies on database marketing to find potential conference attendees and exhibitors, primarily architects and engineers interested in computer hardware, and to design promotions tailored to their interests.
Back in the early 1980s, Ho used an external service bureau to work on a computer. The Bureau maintains a list of 5,000 to 10,000 past and potential visitors, characterized by 13 attributes – showing, for example, previously visited or main areas of interest. At least sketch out letters intended for clients in categories formed by combining various attributes – for example, government engineers. He then arranged for an external postal house to send out mailings listing sessions and materials related to the customer’s field.“The engineers wouldn’t know the architects were coming,” says Ho.
Over the next 10 years, Howe made gradual changes. In 1985, he purchased an IBM AT-class computer and a dBase III database management system from Ashton-Tate. A couple of years later, he replaced dBase III with an earlier version of FoxPro Fox Software and hired a consultant to put on the show on site; in the process, he doubled the number of names and attributes on the list.
But then came the 1991 recession. Attendance at his exhibitions fell 30%, and conference revenues fell in half.Hough knew he needed to do something fast to find clients more efficiently – or to watch his business.
He consulted his database. He decided that he needed to “cut thinner” in order to more accurately target his calls. By doing this, it would also reduce the number of emails, only affecting those most likely to sign up.
Over the next year, he refined and expanded his knowledge base to develop more accurate promotions.Finally, in 1992, he sent just 25 carefully tuned presentations to 500,000 potential visitors – a third less than a year earlier. Improving its database paid off: conference revenues rose 30% to $ 300,000 (only a fraction of Hough’s total sales came from conferences; the rest came from exhibitors), and advertising costs were cut by a third.
Late last year, Howe challenged AT and committed $ 8,000 to upgrade to three 486 Windows computers and a faster and more powerful database management program – an updated version of FoxPro for Windows (now owned by Microsoft, 800-426-9400) …Today, its list includes nearly 50,000 names and 39 attributes. He uses it to send 30 to 40 mailings, or 500,000 a year. Thanks to his more systematic approach, ad spend continues to fall. And conference revenues continue to grow, reaching $ 600,000 last year, and Hough expects them to surpass $ 750,000 this year. Most emails are processed by external mail, which offers a mailing discount of around 2 cents apiece. Hough provides the post office with a disk with names, addresses and attributes, as well as instructions on which attributes to combine and which letters to send in which combinations.“If we hadn’t automated, traffic and revenue would have been steadily declining,” says Ho. “Instead, we are growing well and expect to continue to do so.”
Clearer distribution
Many small businesses do not sell directly to their customers. But that doesn’t mean they can’t use database marketing to make sure their distributors are targeting the right people. However, integrating sales and distribution through technology is not a day in the park.Just ask Agustin Hunei. In 1991, Hewnius, president of a $ 25 million winery in Rutherford, California, set out to track and organize his distribution system. Five years later, the overhaul is still ongoing.
A restless observation sparked the project: Huneeus noticed that when he went to a fancy restaurant to dine, he rarely found one of his wines on the wine list. “Where is my product sold?” he wondered. He began to call this phenomenon “black hole marketing.”He produced wines that seemed to disappear into space.
However, taking control of this issue was not easy, given the nature of the distribution of wine. Like any winery, Franciscans were legally unable to sell directly to customers; it had to go through distributors. To control where his product went, Hewnius had to control 50 distributors: know which stores, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs they were selling; tracking these sales; and then, as Hunei says, “offering them guidance on how best to change their strategies.”
An ambitious plan was born: Huneeus will push distributors to focus on the pillars, the country’s 1,000 best-selling stores and showcases, and the 1,000 most popular hotels and restaurants. To track these accounts, he hired someone to develop a computerized system that includes a database and analytical software. Its salespeople would use this system to analyze what poles and windows the wines were sold on and relay this information to distributors.It was an indirect database marketing system that would help distributors identify the best buyers and sell them the most suitable wines.
To begin with, Huneeus asked its distributors to make monthly reports on which wines were sold to which accounts. This was easier said than done. Getting the MIS distributor staff to write reports in a consistent format was a big headache. Most distributors eventually started issuing reports, but the reports were very different.Some included monthly data; others have all sold this year. Most listed all accounts, not just pillars and windows.
Back at headquarters, Franciscans painstakingly typed data into Paradox, Borland International’s database management software (408-431-1000, $ 284) installed on 486 PCs. The project was not only cumbersome, but in a short time began to lose momentum. Since no one was fully responsible for this, no one followed it.
Hunei knew that he needed to do something to put the system in order. So he hired a new MIS manager, Alan Atkinson. Immediately, Huneeus asked Atkinson to help set up an Excel spreadsheet program to track monthly and annual sales by invoice, brand, and product. Atkinson distributed the application to laptops, which he distributed to 10 local sales representatives for the company. They, in turn, were tasked with undertaking another time-consuming process – collecting written reports from distributors, filtering reports by column and Windows account information, and manually entering this information into a spreadsheet on their laptops.They then sent an electronic copy of the spreadsheet to headquarters for archiving.
Through all these permutations, Huneeus continued to hone the concept of pillars and windows and seek a better computer system. (Excel customization was always meant to be a temporary measure.) Finally, after a year, he and his son Agustin Francisco, who was in charge of marketing, found what they were looking for: a proprietary system worth $ 25,000 (base price). Merchant Account Management developed by MFK Systems (707-963-9222) that has been configured to work with GoldMine, Elan Software’s turnkey contact management program (800-654-3526, $ 200).Trading account management included a central database on the Micron file server; GoldMine was tied to the system and loaded onto sellers’ laptops.
Here’s how it works: Distributors submit their reports electronically to the database. Merchant Account Management breaks down the sales numbers and dates for each distributor’s invoice and categorizes them by region, state, zip code, and wine type. Huneeus can then mine a system for exploration, such as his Chardonnay being sold in 1992 or his Cabernet in the Midwest.GoldMine, on the other hand, contains demographic information – which retail account buys, which wines and how often – and whether the account is a mainstay or a window. By dialing a number on the Micron file server, merchants can receive or send updated demographic information whenever they need it.
This is a concept. Reality is another matter. For this to work, distributors must be conscientious when submitting reports. So far, 10 have done, but only 7 of them provide discs in a format compatible with the system.In the meantime, Franciscan salespeople enter the accounting information into their laptops as usual.
What is the moral of this story? Database marketing can give you wonderful comprehension skills. But right from the start, patience and perseverance can be the most important tools at your disposal.

FIVE STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL DATABASE MARKETING
(Indicate your goals.Are you looking to grow your customer base? Double your product line sales? To encourage repeat business? Make sure you understand your goals before you automate. “Companies that are drawn to this technology without knowing what they want from it will be very disappointed,” says Andrew Deutsch of David Shepard Associates, Dix Hills, N.Y.
(Choose the software that best suits your purpose. For example, if you need a system that is closely related to the field sales representative, choose a contact management program with database capability.On the other hand, if you do a lot of telemarketing, you may need a telemarketing program.
(Determine who should be in the database. First, figure out which types of customers have the greatest potential. Then create a database using everything from salesperson contacts to lists purchased from external vendors.
(Develop a plan. Only after your goals are outlined and your database is built is it time to develop your marketing program.Typically, it falls into one of three categories: direct marketing, rewards for repeat purchases, or promotions for repeat customers that generate profits.
(Measure results. Create periodic status reports in which you define items such as price per contact and price per sale. If you want to be very careful, do not run your program at full capacity. Start with a small prototype; if you like what you see expand to include the entire database.

We know that sometimes, even after a fleeting acquaintance, we want to say: “What a bright person”.What does this mean? Such a person may have a completely non-light skin color or eyes, but we are not talking about physical light and color – we are talking about the light that this person exudes. Probably everyone has had occasion to meet such bright people. You are drawn to them – having seen the light in such a person, people strive to be closer to him.
And how wonderful it is if just the contemplation of such a light helps people to fall in love with each other and create a family! Not the external light, not the brilliance that accompanies the life of a rich and successful person, but the very light that the eyes emit, a face that cannot be overlooked by anyone, even a not very perceptive person.In other words, the light of Divine grace is present in people. And the holy fathers of Athos, reflecting on the presence of Divine grace in the lives of people, said in the XIV century that the very light that is present in people, which changes their lives, is not natural light, but Divine grace itself, uncreated Divine energy. It is no coincidence that on the second Sunday of Lent the Church remembers this and teaches this. We remember the action of Divine grace when we still have five weeks left to, at least to a small extent, repeat the wondrous experience of the saints who have acquired grace, who have acquired Divine light.
What can strengthen our faith more than Divine grace working in us? Never mind! No arguments convince modern people, especially in the sphere of religious life. But the personal experience of a person who has felt the work of grace in his heart is the strongest evidence of the presence of God in our lives. I will say once again about the experience of the God-bearing fathers, who in the 14th century formulated this very correct theological thought, which became practically a dogma. The Fathers not only formulated this idea, but also protected it from being trampled upon by heretics.We are celebrating this event today – the affirmation of a simple and at the same time complex theological idea that Divine grace is present in our lives and can manifest itself in the life of a person and in the life of human society.
May the Lord help us, who have received this wisdom from the holy elders, to try to the best of our ability, growing spiritually and struggling with our sinful ailments, to acquire Divine grace, and with it the hope of salvation. Amen”.

A new church in honor of the Holy Blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky in the area of the former village of Aleksandrovka in the 14th microdistrict of Zelenograd was built on the site of bloody battles in the December days of the Moscow battle of 1941.
In those war years, on the site where the church in honor of St. Philaret of Moscow is now located in Zelenograd, there was the village of “Red October”. In December 1941, there was a stronghold of the Nazis, which covered the village of Aleksandrovka, it was the “key” of the enemy defense. Through it, enemy reinforcements approached from Alabushevo to Kryukovo. Only after the liberation of Aleksandrovka was the release of Kryukovo possible. On December 7, the 1199th Regiment of the 354th Division attacked the Red October.Fierce battles continued for several hours until, under pressure from our troops, the enemy withdrew. Pursuing the fascists, the Red Army units occupied Aleksandrovka. The enemy defenses began to crumble.
During the liberation of Alexandrovka, soldiers of the 354th division were killed. Many of them are buried in a mass grave, which is now located near the Alexander Nevsky Church. At the burial site, a memorial service is held annually on the day of the start of the war.
The dedication of the church in honor of the holy right-believing prince Alexander Nevsky is connected, in particular, with the fact that from December 6, the day of memory of this defender of the Russian land, in 1941 the defeat of the Nazi troops near Moscow began.
A small one-domed temple with three altar apses is decorated with a golden helmet-shaped dome, which is crowned with a cross with a tsata (crescent) image.
The project of the temple, which embodies the collective image of old Russian architecture, was provided by the Moscow Institute “MNIITEP”. The temple is designed for 300 people.
