Linux distribution names | Linux addicts
We all know the names of Linux distributions, at least the main ones.
What is not so well known is where they come from. In this article we will tell you what is the origin of the name of some of them.
It is true that in some cases the name is descriptive of the target, such as Scientific Linux or Ubuntu Studio, and in others it is a combination of developer names, but there are others where the connection is more difficult to detect.

- 1 Linux distribution names
- 1.1 Debian
- 1.2 Ubuntu
- 1.3 Manjaro
- 1.4 Red Hat
- 1 .5 Fedora
- 1.6 Linux Mint
Debian
Debian is a great distribution if you need stability and security. But their variations are just as exciting as boiled potatoes. This is noticeable in the choice of the name of the distribution and the logo.
The name is a combination of the name of the girlfriend of the creator of the project (Debra) and the developer himself (Ian ).
The versions are named after characters from the Toy Story films, while the wobbly branch is named Sid after the character who invariably destroyed his toys.
Ubuntu
Ubuntu is a word of Bantu origin. It consists of two parts: the root ntu and the prefix ubu. Ntu can be translated as “object” and ubu means “person”. This is interpreted as a definition of what defines us as human beings. Today he describes an African philosophy based on respect for other people as a way of showing respect for oneself.
A synthesis of this philosophy by Desmond Tutu, the historical anti-apartheid fighter, came to the aid of older versions of Ubuntu. Curiously, this quote was parodied by the now defunct The Freedom Blog. This site has ridiculed the US conservative media and occasionally ridiculed Steve Ballmer’s diatribes against free software. One entry literally stated: “Ubuntu is an African word that can be translated as “I am going to rape your children.”
Ubuntu version names are made up of an adjective and an animal.
is a description of the features that the new version is expected to have.
Manjaro
This distribution, derived from Arch Linux, owes its name to Mount Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro is a snow-capped volcano that is 5895 meters high, making it the highest mountain in Africa. Apparently the creator of the project scaled it.
Red Hat
The Linux distribution from IBM owes its name to a custom from the university days of the creator of . When he went to his college computer class, he wore his grandfather’s red hat to play lacrosse (a very popular sport in parts of the US). If anyone had questions, the advice was “Ask Little Red Riding Hood”.
Fedora
If you Google the first mention of Fedora, it’s a Russian name meaning “gift from God.” However, the origin of this distribution’s name has more to do with the fact that it is based on Red Hat. The distribution’s logo is a hat known as Fedora.
Fedora is a flexible, short-brimmed hat originally from Italy.
Linux Mint
In this case, we have a written explanation of the keyboard from the creator of the distribution, so let’s quote it: decided to publish them myself, so I needed .com and came up with the name . Mint is cool, short, fresh, easy to write and remember, and in English it even means “cool”, “good condition”, “perfect”, etc. I also liked how Linux was associated with poles, penguins, ice … the way the untouched core was called “vanilla”… and so Mint was close to all of that. Big name, no special meaning… Just a series of pleasant subjective associations, I suppose.
This also explains why the versions have female names:
This is about emphasizing the relationship between the user and the object and the owner’s attachment to what he is passionate about. For many, Linux is more than just a useful operating system, it’s also a hobby, and there’s an interest and passion for jumping a distro and discovering, adopting, and spending time with a new version.
