World Lacrosse Sixes: A New Format at Lake Placid
In recent years, the Lake Placid Summit Classic has also become a testing ground for an exciting new lacrosse format: World Lacrosse Sixes. This fast-paced version of the sport is gaining traction globally and was featured in evaluation camps during the 2021 tournament.
What are the key differences between Sixes and traditional lacrosse?
World Lacrosse Sixes introduces several modifications to the traditional game:
- Smaller field size (70 x 36 meters)
- Fewer players (6 vs. 6)
- Shorter game length (four 8-minute quarters)
- 30-second shot clock
These changes result in a more fast-paced, high-scoring game that is designed to be more accessible to new players and spectators.
Why is Sixes being introduced at Lake Placid?
The inclusion of Sixes evaluation camps at the Lake Placid Summit Classic serves multiple purposes:
- To familiarize players and coaches with the new format
- To identify talented players who excel in this style of play
- To prepare USA Lacrosse for upcoming international competitions using the Sixes format
- To showcase the exciting potential of this new discipline to a wider audience
As Sixes gains prominence on the international stage, events like the Lake Placid Summit Classic play a crucial role in developing talent and strategies for this emerging format.

Rosters Named for USA Sixes Evaluation Camp at Lake Placid

National Teams
SPARKS, Md. — USA Lacrosse has named the men’s and women’s players that will participate in evaluation camps for the new World Lacrosse Sixes discipline during the Lake Placid (N.Y.) Summit Classic from Aug. 2-4.
Sixes is a fast-paced version of the sport played on a smaller field (70 x 36 meters), with fewer players (6 v 6), a condensed game length (four 8-minute quarters) and a 30-second shot clock.
World Lacrosse will continue to use the traditional field game for its world championships, including the 2022 World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship, which will be hosted by USA Lacrosse at Towson University next summer. However, Sixes will be the format used for some designated events, including The World Games, a multi-sport Olympic-style event, in Birmingham, Ala., next summer.
The World Games were first held in 1981 and feature more than 30 sports and 3,000 athletes competing from around the world in sports not included in the Olympics. The U.S. women won the inaugural lacrosse competition in Poland in 2017 when the event was played under a modified version of the traditional field game. This will be the first time that men’s lacrosse will be included in The World Games and both men’s and women’s lacrosse will use the Sixes discipline.
The Sixes evaluation camp at Lake Placid is the second of three events for USA Lacrosse this year. The first camp was held earlier this month at USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md., with an exhibition game at the USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals in Frederica, Del. A third event, featuring international competition, is planned for October at USA Lacrosse headquarters.
“These camps are a great way to learn about how the game is played, strategies we can develop and how players and coaches fit this version of the sport,” said Skip Lichtfuss, director of high performance and national teams for USA Lacrosse. “Next week’s camp has a great mix of players that competed in our first camp along with players who will be getting their first prolonged exposure to the Sixes discipline.”
Serving as coaches for next week’s camp, which will be highlighted by a public exhibition on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in Lake Placid, N.Y., will be Bobby Benson (University of Maryland men’s assistant coach), Tony Resch (2018 U.S. men’s assistant coach/2015 U.S. box head coach), Andy Shay (Yale men’s head coach) and Regy Thorpe (University of Florida women’s assistant coach/2019 U.S. box head coach). Past U.S. women’s team players Erica LaGrow Bamford (Yale women’s head coach) and Devon Wills (Harvard women’s head coach) have also been involved in the Sixes development process.
