Community mourning 2 WCSU lacrosse players killed in Friday crash

COLCHESTER — Two Western Connecticut State University students were killed in a crash in Colchester Friday afternoon, state police said.

Police later identified the students as Colchester residents Jacob Chapman, 18, and Tyler Graham, 18.

A third student, later identified as Trey Massaro, 19, of Dalton, Mass., was airlifted to Hartford Hospital with suspected serious injuries, according to state police.

Massaro suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover, WCSU President John Clark said Saturday.

“We continue to mourn the loss of two of our promising young students and hope for a strong recovery for Trey,” Clark said.

In his announcement, Clark said there are plans to hold a memorial for Chapman and Graham on campus, with more details to be released soon.

All three are freshmen at the university and members of the men’s lacrosse team.

Both Chapman and Graham were pursuing a bachelor of business administration in management from the Ancell School of Business. They also had attended Bacon Academy in Colchester, the university said Saturday.

Massaro is pursuing a bachelor’s of science degree in Justice and Law Administration-Law Enforcement from the Ancell School of Business. He attended Wahconah Regional High School in Dalton, Mass., according to WCSU.

Colchester First Selectman Mary Bylone said the community is heartbroken over Champman and Graham’s deaths.

“Both Jake and Tyler were deeply committed to their community and to their schools,” Bylone wrote on her office’s Facebook page. “Full of promise and hope for the future, they represented the best of Colchester’s young people and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved them.”

Police were notified of the crash, which took place on Lake Hayward Road near the Route 354 intersection, around 1 p.m. Friday.

An incident report from Troop K said Chapman was driving a red 2010 Nissan Altima westbound on Route 354 when he attempted to pass another car at a high speed. For an unknown reason, the car left the road and collided with a metal guardrail and multiple trees before stopping down an embankment, according to the incident summary.

Graham, who was in the passenger in the front seat, was pronounced dead on the scene. Chapman was transported to the Marlborough Medical Clinic and was later pronounced dead, state police said.

Massaro was airlifted to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries, according to state police.

Route 354 at Lake Hayward Road was closed for about five hours and the crash is still under investigation, police said.

An outpouring of support and condolences filled social media on Saturday following news of the deadly crash.

“Tyler was a phenomenal athlete, someone who would do whatever it takes to make his mark on the field, and a player whose work ethic was so infectious that those around him pushed themselves to be the best they could be,” Connecticut Valley Lacrosse posted to its Facebook page. “Life is too short. Tyler we will miss you as will all whose lives you’ve impacted. … We will never forget you and the time you spent with our program.”

Graham had played with the program in addition to his time with the Bacon Academy team.

Chapman started playing lacrosse when he was 10 years old, according to his ConnectLax profile.

Teams who played the duo also spoke highly of them.

“The lacrosse community suffered a great loss yesterday,” East Catholic Boys Lacrosse wrote on its Facebook page. “Our love and prayers go out to the Bacon Academy lacrosse program, WestConn Men’s Lacrosse, Colchester community and most especially the friends and families of Jake Chapman and Tyler Graham (Class of 2021) who tragically lost their lives. They were great competitors on the field and were taken from us far too soon. May they Rest In Peace.”

A Colchester resident organized a candlelight vigil for the two boys. The vigil will take place Sunday at 6 p.m. on the Colchester Town Green at 98 Hayward Ave.

Colchester Youth Services will be offering counseling in the coming days for anyone who needs it.

WCSU’s counseling center met with the lacrosse team’s players and coaches. WCSU will also provide counseling to students in Litchfield Hall, where Chapman and Graham lived, and other students who seek services, Clark said Friday.

90,000 Furious Tortorella has a youth blooming

Columbus kicked seven goals against the tough Panthers after starting their three-game trips to Florida and New York on Thursday. This scoring eruption brought John Tortorella’s team a ninth victory in 13 matches and propelled them to the very top of the Metropolitan Division. The same division that was the strongest in the NHL last season, and which is now dominated by the New Jersey Devils, to everyone’s amazement.

But if the unexpected starting sprint of the Devils became an absolute sensation of the first month, then the success of the Blue Jackets is already taken for granted. And while their direct competitors – “Pittsburgh”, “Washington” and “Rangers”, from which they expected an equally convincing debut, are dealing with their numerous problems, “Columbus” is breaking its way up, sending everyone the notorious “message” that last year 108 points were just a prelude to something bigger.

Meanwhile, it would be worth to be surprised. “Blue Jackets” and last season were a very young team (average age – 25.54 years), and this year they have become almost a year younger – 24.68! Today’s Columbus are not just the youngest team in the NHL, but by a significant margin, since there are no other teams with an average age below 25 in the league.

30-year-old captain Nick Foligno and 31-year-old striker Brandon Dubinsky and defender Jack Johnson act here as grandfathers who have seen everything in life.There is no one older than this trinity in the 2017-18 Columbus. At the same time, only in the first 13 matches of the season, 16 (!) Hockey players under 25 years old went on the ice. And they don’t just go out to gain experience, but often play a decisive role in team success. Of the eight victorious goals, six are on the account of all this youth. Only 21-year-old rookie Sonny Milano has scored two of them. In an away match with “Carolina” on October 10, he scored both goals, “Columbus”, including the winning in overtime.

For all the frenzy, regular incontinence and even conflict of John Tortorella, one most valuable quality cannot be taken away from him: in today’s NHL he is perhaps the strongest specialist in work with young players.And the current start of the season is the best confirmation of this. There are such fertile lands and climatic zones in the world that they say: stick a stick in the ground and it will bloom. The same can be said for the young players of the current Columbus, John Tortorella. Even those who initially did not get a place in the roster, coming to the base from the farm club, flourish. The most recent example is 22-year-old winger Tyler Mott, called on urgently after Cam Atkinson suffered a lower-body injury against St. Louis. The guy came rushing from his “Cleveland” – and in both matches scored on the puck as a base.

But the flourishing of young people under Tortorell is only something that you have to look specifically at in order to notice. A much less armed eye can see how balanced their attack is now. In 13 matches, 22 hockey players have already scored points for performance, with only Artemy Panarin having a double-digit number of points so far – 11 (1 + 10).This balance is perfectly illustrated by the team’s last match against the Panthers, with the mention of which we started. In seven abandoned washers, “Columbus” the role of the leading forwards Panarin, Wennberg and Foligno is limited to one transfer of the Russian. But all seven (!) Goals were scored by players under 25, whose names you had never heard a couple of years ago.

And, of course, Sergei Bobrovsky is in perfect order, starting this season almost identical to the past, which brought him the second “Vezina” in his career. In 10 matches, the Russian scored eight victories, reflecting 93.2% of shots (in the past it was 93.1%) with a reliability coefficient of 2.07 (in the past it was 2.06). Everyone has already lost count of how many press conferences Tortorella began with compliments to Sergei, recalling that it was he who gave the team a chance to win.

Why Columbus are in a solid seventh place in the NHL in terms of goals conceded is not hard to understand.It is much more difficult to grasp the fact that they are in eighth place, despite the absolutely non-working majority. With 12.8% sales, they trail 30th in the league, beating only Anaheim. But on the other hand, can you imagine what kind of car this team will become when they finally fix the game with a numerical advantage?

One thing is clear: these guys are no longer going to be satisfied with the fact of reaching the playoffs. The KHL All-Star Game was good for everyone except the All-Star Game. The league needs to think about how to change the format of the game.

Actually, this All-Star Game has turned into a buffoonery.Ideally, I would like to see hockey skills. But even Gusev did not succeed in his last year’s bullet. And to shoot the goalkeeper from a bow, run with a piece of paper “DiCaprio” on his back, set fire to the stick, move the puck with a lacrosse stick, change into a goalkeeper, wrap his arms around Mozyakin and throw him onto the ice – this is a skit.

You go to Spivakov’s concert, and the Moscow Virtuosi start knocking you on Khokhloma spoons. You want to watch basketball stunts from Harlem Globrotters, and people dress up as a hare and an owl, play a bouncer.

So what to do?

Change format. Why is the NHL constantly looking for new solutions? They will either have a star draft, or they will decide to hack to death “3 on 3” three matches of 20 minutes each.

Because the old format is boring. Even under Gordie Howe, teams split into two conferences and played a full match. Well, boredom.

This is also shown by the voice of the people. I asked people on Twitter and VKontakte: “Did you like the KHL All-Star Game?” The answer was approximately the same: 60% – no.

There is a grateful audience (40%), but the rest should be somehow surprised.Brainstorm.

What do I offer?

Let, for example, the KHL stars team play against the Russian U20 youth team, which will be headed by Valery Bragin. In the wake of the aftertaste from the January MFM, it will go well. Even at the World Cup, young guys made up a whole North American team. Why don’t we do it on a star show?

It is also interesting that the KHL stars team will play against the Russian women’s team. Why not?
