Merrimack Continues to Progress as Year Three of Their DI Era of Approaches – Lacrosse Bucket
Following the 2019 season, which saw Merrimack win a second consecutive DII national title, the Warriors made a jump that hadn’t been seen since Bryant made the same move in 2012. That move being the Warriors’ jump up from DII to DI.
Moving up to DI, where they joined the NEC, after winning two straight national titles at the DII level created a certain level of excitement and buzz around the Andover-based program and how competitive they could be in their new home, especially once they become a full member and able to compete in the postseason in 2024. However, the first two years of the DI era for Merrimack lacrosse haven’t been as kind as they would like.
First off, the Warriors saw their inaugural season as a DI program cut short six games in. They went 1-5 in those six contests, but only fell by an average of 1.8 goals. In 2021, competing in their first full season as a DI, Merrimack went 5-5 (4-4 NEC) and finished fifth in the conference standings. They took their losses by an average of 4.4 goals, which included a one-goal, 11-10, loss against eventual NEC Champion Bryant.
With two years to go until the Warriors can compete in the postseason, the DI adaptation continues for this program. Heading into 2022, Mike Morgan leads Merrimack into its third season as a DI program looking to build upon the successes found last season, and keep taking the necessary steps forward to be a consistent competitor within the NEC, especially once 2024 rolls around.
In 2021, the NEC featured some stellar offenses with LIU (14.09 goals per game) and Bryant (13.62) being top-15 nationally while St. Joseph’s (12.38) and Hobart (12.22) were each top-25 scoring offense at seasons’ end. Merrimack sat right behind that group as the fifth best offense in the conference and 30th-best in the nation, averaging 11.40 goals per game. The Warriors also averaged 6.33 assists per game and 17.10 points per game.
Those numbers are up from what the Warriors were producing in 2020 prior to the season being cut short. And being able to improve in the first year of the post Charlie Bertrand era is a good sign for this Merrimack offense going forward, as they should be able to improve further or, at least, hover around the same numbers during the upcoming 2022 season. That is especially true with how much production this Warriors’ offense will return this spring.
Merrimack will see each of their top five point-getters back from a year ago, including the Rooney brothers who took the reigns and led this offense last season. Jack Rooney, a junior attackman, transferred in from Furman and led the Warriors’ offense with 34 points off 25 goals and nine assists. Tommy Rooney, a senior midfielder, was Merrimack’s second-leading scorer last season with 33 points off 25 goals and nine assists. The elder Rooney transferred in from Siena prior to last season.
In addition to the aforementioned sharp-shooting brothers, Merrimack returns attackmen Christian Thomas (21G/6A) and Sean Black (5G/19A) for an extra season, while senior midfielder Drew Hailey (14G/4A), who played in all 10 games but only started the first three, also returns after being the Warriors’ fifth-leading scorer last season. Black was the only first team All-NEC selection from Merrimack last season, and the team’s only All-NEC pick on the offensive end.
Max Morrill (11G/2A), Grant Laman (5G/3A), and Aiden Glover (4G/1A) will also be returning after each saw multiple starts at the midfield spot last season. The trio will surely
With the core of this offense, which is filled with guys who have and can play and succeed at multiple positions on the field, returning, it’s not naive to think this unit can possibly take a big step up in 2022. That looks even more like a real possibility when you consider the sheer amount of talent back and the fact that this unit did progress a decent amount last season. The Warriors averaged 12 goals per game during their final five games after averaging 10.8 goals per game in their first five contests, which included two single-digit outputs.
Merrimack also saw its shooting percentage during the back half of the season, shooting approximately 33% per game during the final five games of the season after seeing that number be around 27% during the first half of the season.
Defensively, the Warriors deployed a fairly green unit last season with defenseman Nicholas Perez-Blanco (14GB/18CT), who led the team in caused turnovers and was a first team All-NEC selection, being the only one of two heavy contributors with any starting experience heading into the year. LSM Christian Glover (23GB/10CT) was the only other key player on the back end with much experience, having appeared in 20 games in his first two seasons in North Andover.
Perez-Blanco and Glover headlined a defense that saw two freshman get the starting nod the majority of the season, while a duo of sophomores also made a significant impact. NEC All-Rookie defenseman Joseph Jorgenson (11GB/8CT) started all 10 games as a freshman at close last season while Riley Reed (11GB/3CT) saw action in every game with seven starts as a sophomore. Sam Walsh (6GB/5CT) started half of the games (3) at close as a freshman during 2020 and saw similar time as a sophomore this past season, playing in seven games and starting the first three.
The youthfulness of this defense even extended into the cage with Furman transfer Andrew Jenet starting the first game of the season as a sophomore before freshman Henry Vogt took over the following game and started the rest of the season. Vogt made 103 saves with a .531% save percentage and earned All-Rookie honors in the NEC.
Additionally, Merrimack will also return their top two SSDMs in juniors Jack Barron (23GB/7CT) and Michael Ferrara (7GB/3CT). The pair look to be key options for this rope unit again in 2022 after putting together strong sophomore campaigns this past spring.
Merrimack’s defense wasn’t the best last season, allowing 11.8 goals per game, which includes allowing 20 goals against Bryant in early-March. However, with the experienced leaders, as well as the young talent, the Warriors bring back on the back end this coming season, there isn’t much reason to doubt how much this unit can improve.
Another area of the field in which Merrimack deployed a good amount of youth last season was at the faceoff dot. Allyn French, who served as the primary option as a freshman in 2020, starter the year as the starter but was sidelined with a knee injury after just three games. Freshman Karl Sutter stepped into that primary role, going 70-for-132 (.530%). French went 23-for-47 (.489%) in the three games he appeared in.
Assuming French is able to comeback 100%, him and Sutter could create an exciting one-two-punch at the dot that posses a lot of potential. And if just one of them comes through with an uber strong season, this Merrimack offense could possibly progress and explode more than expected due to those extra possessions.
FAQ: How To String A High Pocket Lacrosse?
What does a high pocket do in lacrosse?
A high pocket is mostly what offensive middies and some attacks use. The ball stays nice and high in the stick ready for a quick feed to the crease or a quick step down shot. A high pocket should be used by a player that wants the ball in their stick for the shortest amount of time.
What makes a lacrosse pocket illegal?
Any gap between your lacrosse head and the ball makes the pocket illegal. This is called the “daylight test” because you can’t see daylight above the ball if the pocket is legal.
Do you need shooting strings on a lacrosse stick?
Lacrosse Shooting String Styles Not all shooting string styles will work on every lacrosse pocket, so experimenting is necessary. If you have a tight channel then you won’t be able to have a lot of shooting strings, or the ball will whip down.
What is a pocket in lacrosse?
A middie typically carries his stick parallel to the ground. Therefore, a high pocket allows for the ball to sit easily when a middie runs with the ball. Also, a high pocket enables a quick release. Meaning, the ball will catapult out of the head due to less drag. It is a true shooter’s pocket.
Why does my lacrosse stick throw high?
WHAT IS WHIP? Whip is how high or low your stick is throwing the ball while you’re using a normal shooting motion. If your shots are traveling too high above the goal, that can be a sign that you don’t have enough whip.
What lacrosse head does Paul Rabil use?
The Rabil 2 Box lacrosse head was designed with with the best in mind – Paul Rabil. It provides superior shot power and accuracy while the Sym-Rail allows maximum levels of stiffness at the lowest possible weight.
Why do lacrosse players drop their sticks?
After a goal, the player who scored may not touch the strings of her crosse and must immediately drop her stick. If the opposing coach requests a stick check after a goal, the official would inspect the pocket of the scoring player’s crosse.
How do you fix an illegal lacrosse pocket?
A wet pocket is one of the most common causes of an illegal stick. When you get home take you stick out of your bag and stuff your pocket with old newspaper or even paper towels. The paper will absorb the water and help your pocket retain its’ shape.
Can a lacrosse goalie stick be illegal?
Once they leave the crease they’re considered a field player and the goalie stick, with its deep pocket, is illegal for a “field player”.
Are wooden lacrosse sticks legal?
Yes, wood sticks are legal: Rule 1, Section 7, Article 1: The crosse shall be made of wood, laminated wood or synthetic material, with the head approximately perpendicular to the handle.
What does whip mean in lacrosse?
WHIP: In a lacrosse stick, when the ball is hooked by the mesh, shooting strings, pocket, or plastic it will leaves the stick early. When a stick has a high amount of whip, and the player follows through overhand to the target with his stick, the ball will be hooked and throw down or low.
How deep should a girls lacrosse pocket be?
Lacrosse pockets should be slightly less than one ball deep in order to preserve legality and retain the most amount of hold. The sidewall string should interfere with your view of seeing the entire ball when holding the pocket at eye level. Goalkeeper’s pockets should be two to three balls deep.
Is Iroquois top string legal?
Shooting strings cannot be lower than four inches from the top of your head (no “V” or “U”). If someone wants to come up with a 6 inch iroquois topstring, and string the middle of the head so tight that it has whip and can still throw and hold the ball, it should be legal.
No. 7 Maryland field hockey vs. California preview
The No. 7 Maryland Terrapins will conclude its final game of the Terrapin Invitational with a Sunday matchup versus the California Golden Bears.
Maryland is coming off a defensive dominating victory over No. 21 UMass on Friday, by a score of 1-0. In the victory over the Minutewomen, defender Riley Donnelly registered the lone goal for the Terps in the second quarter with a nimble spin move.
Maryland (3-1) is seeking to improve their home record to 3-0, as they welcome the Golden Bears (3-1) to College Park. Cal is coming off an imposing road victory over the Towson Tigers on Friday after it beat its opponent by a lopsided score of 4-1. The Golden Bears are currently on a two-game winning streak, as they look to extend it versus the Terps.
The last time these two teams played each other was in 2018 when the Terrapins dominated the Golden Bears, 5-0.
The game is set to start at 2 p.m. on Sunday and will be aired on BTN Plus.
Now let’s take a look at the California Golden Bears.
California Golden Bears (3-1)
2020 record: 5-6 (4-4 America East)
The Golden Bears are led by their head coach and pioneer of collegiate field hockey in Shellie Onstead.
Onstead is returning to Cal for her 27th season, as the unquestioned leader for the Golden Bears. Under Onstead’s leadership, the California Golden Bears are 267-206. She has led her group to 11 conference titles, with five NCAA tournament appearances.
The Golden Bears’ California Hall of Fame inductee has completely transformed the program and led the club to consistently unprecedented heights, with her time at the helm.
This season, Cal defeated then-No. 25 Stanford in its season opener before falling to then-No. 10 Liberty. However, the Golden Bears bounced back to win two in a row against Dartmouth and Towson.
Players to know
Anne Van Hoof, graduate backfield, No. 24 — The Wake Forest transfer comes to Cal as an aggressive backfielder who currently leads the Golden Bears in goals this season with three total goals so far. She also leads her club in shots, as she has recorded 17 shots in a mere four games this season. In Friday’s contest with Towson, she recorded two goals in the lopsided 4-1 victory.
Maddie Cleat, graduate forward, No. 17 — Cleat has been making several contributions to her team’s 3-1 early season record. She has registered one goal on the season while ranking second on her club with 10 shots. Cleat also ranks second in shots on goals with seven and currently has an impressive 70% shot on goal percentage.
Cato Knipping, junior goalkeeper, No. 36 — The Netherlands native has been protecting the net with intensity through the four games in the early 2021 season. Knipping has only surrendered three goals this season and has a save percentage of 62.5%. The goalkeeper is averaging an impressive 0.86 goals scored on her this season. During the spring 2020 season, Knipping was named America East Player of The Week, recording 19 saves and one shutout.
Shots on goal. Cal is a team that is efficient in their shots on goals, as a result of their 67.3% shots on goal percentage. The Golden Bears have two players who have already recorded double-digit shots on the season. Cal has five players who currently possess a shot on goals percentage no lower than 58.8%. As a team, the Golden Bears have taken 33 shots on goal while their opponents have taken just 10.
Shots percentage. While Cal is efficient at shooting an exorbitant number of shots, they aren’t able to convert their shots into goals. The Golden Bears currently have a shots percentage of 12.2% on the season. For comparison, its opponents’ shot percentage is an average of 20% and Maryland is coming into this matchup with a 15.9% shots percentage. Their record isn’t indicative of their ability to convert on their shots, but it is a major area of concern for the Golden Bears.
Three things to watch
1. Can the Terrapins build on their defensive dominance? Maryland has not relinquished a goal in the last 10 quarters. The defensive pressure by midfielders Brooke DeBerdine and Taylor Mason were relentless in their previous game versus UMass, as their speed and athleticism were able to take over the game.
2. Will defender Rayne Wright continue to build on her hot start? Wright was termed as the player of the game, according to head coach Missy Meharg. Wright played over 50 minutes in Maryland’s last contest and she has been playing exceptionally well. Wright has been using her speed and tenacity to put pressure on opposing defenses while creating nifty scoring opportunities for her teammates.
3. Can Maryland finally capitalize on its penalty corners? The Terps have struggled to convert on their penalty corners, as they haven’t scored a penalty corner in two consecutive games. Maryland’s offense is high-powered, so it is baffling to see the struggles that they are experiencing. The Terps will have to continue to work to break their penalty corner slump in order to unleash the full potential of their offensive arsenal.
Philippe Chow diners fled as shots rang out, footage shows
Dramatic footage shows the moment panicked diners flee Philippe Chow in Manhattan amid a shooting over a Rolex watch — an attack that police are now probing as a part of a string of luxury-watch robberies in the Big Apple.
Surveillance camera footage shows two male suspects exit a car and walk toward the upscale Chinese eatery in the Upper East Side Wednesday night before allegedly shooting Melchior Cooke, 31, in the left leg as he dined outside, according to police and sources.
The 10 p.m. shooting itself was not caught on camera.
A group of horrified diners and other bystanders then appear to run from the restaurant after a struggle ensues over the watch and gunfire erupts.
“[One] guy approached him. They obviously knew each other. They got into a scuffle,” said Wayne Lawrence, 50, a regional manager at Il Mulino next door to the restaurant, who saw the attack.
“I just saw him on the floor and there was a lot of blood. He wasn’t even moaning or anything. It just looked like he was about to pass out. I smacked him in the face,” he said.
“I went outside and I saw the kid on the floor … I pulled the sheet off the tablecloth and wrapped it around his legs and tied it tight. My best buddy took his belt off and tied it [on him],” he told The Post. “It was a lot of blood. It ruined my $500 jacket.”

Craig Fournier, who was munching spare ribs three tables away, said Cooke managed to wrestle the gun away from the shooter.
“Glasses were shattering. We saw the victim kinda staggering down the sidewalk, bleeding profusely and [he] collapsed. He threw the gun to the side,” said Fournier.
“People were running, afraid and for safety,” said Fournier, who is a plastic surgeon fellow at Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital.
“When we saw the victim staggering down the street bleeding profusely, we had to take action,” he said, adding that he helped apply pressure and a tourniquet to his wound.
The suspects fled after the shooting.Christopher Sadowski
Cooke, who is the father of a 4-year-old son, was sedated and recovering at a hospital Thursday, his shaken mom, Lisa Cooke, told The Post.
“When I first got the text [about the attack], I was shaking,” she said. “I’m just glad that he didn’t get killed.”
“He is in a lot of pain but he is stable,” she said, adding the bullet exited his leg during the shooting.
Bob Iger, the executive chairman of the Walt Disney Company, and Diane Sawyer had been dining at the hotspot Wednesday night but, like most other guests, left before the shooting, sources said.
Police said a third suspect may have been involved in the Manhattan shooting on Wednesday.
“A black 9mm handgun with a shell casing lodged in the slide was recovered. Thankfully, it was unable to be fired after that first round or else other innocent people could have been injured,” Chief of Detectives James Essig said at a press conference Thursday, noting that cops don’t believe the suspects knew the victim.
“We are currently looking at other familiar similar patterns in the precinct. And we’ll be getting video out and pictures out to the public to ask for their help in this crime.”
Police say they are currently “looking at other familiar similar patterns in the precinct.”Christopher Sadowski
The suspects fled after the shooting and were still at large Thursday.
The stick-up is one of at least five robberies — including two others outside Manhattan restaurants — in which thieves snatched luxury watches and other bling in recent months.
On Aug. 14, a 47-year-old man and his 27-year-old friend had just walked out of the trendy TAO Downtown on Ninth Avenue and West 17th Street in Chelsea at around 4 a.m. when they were attacked by thieves that jumped out of a Mercedes-Benz, police said.
One of the crooks pulled a gun and demanded that the victims hand over $4 million worth of jewelry, including a high-end Richard Mille watch, necklaces and rings.
Five days later, a 34-year-old man was leaving the Mediterranean bistro Pergola on West 28th Street and Sixth Avenue in Murray Hill at around 1 a.m, when two men hopped out of a Mercedes-Benz and robbed him at gunpoint, cops said. They allegedly snatched $100,000 worth of bling — including a Audemar watch, a bracelet and necklace.
On June 21, Milton Grant, a 34-year-old father of twins, was shot in the head and stripped of his chain and Rolex after crooks saw him sporting the bling at a Manhattan night club.
A deli customer at Master Deli and Grocery in the Bronx was later beaten by a man who swiped his $750 Rolex watch on June 29.
Police are investigating whether the thefts are part of a pattern, a law enforcement source said Thursday.
Other diners were also robbed of upscale watches and bling in Los Angeles in recent months, including on the upscale Melrose Avenue, according to cops.

East Pittsburgh police officer charged with homicide in fatal shooting of unarmed teen
Reporting from East Pittsburgh, Pa. —
A white police officer was charged Wednesday with homicide in the death of an unarmed black teenager who was shot in the back while fleeing a traffic stop, a shooting that has fueled daily protests around Pittsburgh.
Prosecutors cited East Pittsburgh Police Officer Michael Rosfeld’s inconsistent statements about whether he thought he saw a gun in the hand of 17-year-old Antwon Rose Jr.
The officer first told investigators that Rose turned his hand toward the officer when he ran from the car and Rosfeld “saw something dark he perceived as a gun,” according to the criminal complaint.
During a second recap of last week’s shooting, Rosfeld told investigators he did not see a gun and was not sure whether Rose’s arm was pointed at him when he fired.
The 30-year-old officer had been sworn in just hours before the June 19 shooting in the small borough of East Pittsburgh after working at the Police Department for a couple of weeks. After being charged, he surrendered and was released on $250,000 bond.
Criminal homicide is a broad category that includes manslaughter and murder. Pennsylvania prosecutors typically specify what subsection of homicide they will pursue later in the case.
Allegheny County Dist. Atty. Stephen Zappala said his office planned to ask a jury to consider the highest charge of first-degree murder. He argued against releasing Rosfeld on bail.
“You do not shoot someone in the back if they are not a threat to you,” Zappala said.
The car Rose was in had been stopped on suspicion of involvement in a drive-by shooting. But investigators determined that Rose had done nothing “except be in the car,” Zappala said.
Zappala said witnesses described Rose as showing his hands before the shooting, emphasizing that he did not have a weapon.
Asked by reporters whether he saw anything in Rosfeld’s employment records that raised concerns, Zappala said yes but declined to elaborate.
Rosfeld’s attorney, Patrick Thomassey, said little as he left court but previously told CBS News that the officer was depressed.
He “feels bad about what happened, and it was his first time ever firing his weapon as a police officer,” Thomassey said.
At a news conference held by the family’s legal team, attorney Fred Rabner questioned why the officer was released without any cash or collateral for his bond.
Another family attorney, Lee Merritt, said the biggest “moment of relief” for relatives was hearing investigators say they knew Rose was not involved in the drive-by shooting.
“If he had survived that incident, as he should have, he wouldn’t have been charged. He had done nothing wrong,” Merritt said.
During the news conference, Rose’s mother, father, grandmother and sister huddled behind a podium wearing shirts calling for justice. Rose’s mother struggled to contain tears as her daughter clasped her tightly.
Her son was shot three times — in the right side of his face, in the elbow and in the back by a bullet that struck his lung and heart, which was the fatal wound, authorities said.

This article was originally published at 6:50 a.m.
It is customary to analyze the technique of archery according to the following elements: preparation, grip, grip, bow tension, release (descent), breath control, aiming.
Archery – is the process of performing a complex motional action, the main elements of which are the pulling of the bow and the release of the bowstring. Archery Technique – is the optimal way of performing this motional action .Each archer has his own shooting technique, since all people differ in physical development, body structure, body weight and other parameters. The technical elements of shooting a sport classic bow are different from the technique of shooting a compound bow.
Archery is determined by the position of the legs, torso, arms and head of the athlete. Let’s consider each element of the archer’s making separately:
Leg position. The archer (right-handed) usually stands with his left side towards the target. Legs that provide support for the whole body, because shooting is carried out in an upright position, must be straightened. The tension of the corresponding muscles creates a minimum of internal degrees of freedom for the lower extremities and lower body, i.e. movement in all joints (ankle, knee, hip) should be minimal. This is a prerequisite for maintaining balance and reducing vibrations to ensure the immobility of the “shooter-weapon” system.Naturally, overstrain of the muscles of the legs and trunk is unacceptable, because this can cause miscoordination in the basic motion control system.
Feet are located approximately shoulder-width apart from each other, toes are slightly turned to the sides. The position of the feet should be constant, not changing from shot to shot. It is determined by the location of the characteristic points of the feet (front and back points of the axis passing through the middle of the heel and the middle of the big toe).
There are three main production options: open, side, closed.
The choice of this or that option depends on the individual characteristics of the archer. These options mainly differ in the position of the body relative to the target line, determined primarily by the position of the feet.
- The open position of the archer is characterized by the smallest angle between the hand holding the bow and the shoulder line (angle of position). In this case, the feet are positioned in such a way that the foot of the right leg is in front of the left, i.e.the axis of the support area runs at an angle to the direction of fire. The body is turned to the target to a greater extent than in other manufacturing options.
- Side seam has a larger seam angle than open seam, with the feet being almost parallel.
- Closed production . She is characterized by the greatest angle of position: the right leg is located slightly behind the left.
The figure shows the position of the legs in open, side and closed types of work.
The most common at the present time is the side fabrication.
All three types of archery workmanship are subdivided into preliminary and basic.
Preliminary preparation consists in performing movements that ensure the correct positioning of the feet relative to each other and the orientation of the body relative to the target line. The head is usually slightly turned towards the target. The bow is either held in weight by the left hand, lowered along the body, or rests with the lower shoulder on the left foot and is held by the left hand bent at the elbow joint.
The main preparation consists in performing the necessary actions for the shooter to take the position with the drawn bow until the bowstring touches certain (individual) orientation points on the face (chin, tip of the nose, etc.).
Torso position. In a ready-made archer, this position can be estimated by the conventional vertical axis. Depending on the individual characteristics, this axis can be located strictly vertically or with a slight forward inclination. With this torso position, it is easier to reduce unwanted touch and pressure of the bowstring on the shooter’s chest.
The position of the torso must obey the basic requirement – to create biomechanical support and maintain it throughout the entire duration of the shot. In this regard, the work of the trunk muscles should be as variable as possible, which requires constant training.
The position of the trunk is determined by the location of its characteristic points (abdomen, pelvis, as well as the axis passing through the hip joints).
Head position . The shooter’s head is turned to face the target. The neck muscles that hold the head upright and take part in turning the head should not be overly tense. Otherwise, it can disrupt the blood flow, lead to excessive tension in the muscles of the trunk and the arm that pulls the bow, which, in turn, can cause discoordination of movements and, as a result, the occurrence of errors. The position of the head should be uniform and not change during the execution of the shot, otherwise it can negatively affect the quality of aiming.
The distance between the eyes (leading eye) and the shank of the arrow must always be constant, so the teeth must be tightly clenched. The points (point) of contact between the bowstring and the face (tip of the nose, middle of the chin, to the right of the face) must be constant.
The lower jaw should be in close contact with the upper part of the hand and the fingertip, because the hand that pulls the bow moves along the jawbone and the monotonous point of contact serves as a constant guide to the correct movement of the hand.
The leading eye must be located at a certain (equal) distance from the plane of the shot so that the bowstring does not obscure the front sight.
Hand holding the bow . The left (usually) hand holding the bow is raised towards the target, straightened and located in relation to the axis of the spinal column at an angle of approximately 90 ° (the change in this angle depends on the shooting distance).
The arm should be straightened and secured at the wrist, elbow and shoulder joints. This reinforcement is accomplished by the simultaneous tension of the antagonist muscles for each joint. The hand holding the bow actively resists the increasing pressure of the bow as it is pulled. The hand, forearm and shoulder during the pulling and holding of the stretched bow must be a rigid system together with the shoulder girdle and head.
The position of the hand is determined by the selected way of holding the bow ( by grip ). To hold the bow, there are several types of grip, differing in the location of the palm and fingers on the bow handle: low, medium, high.
Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Common to all grips is that the bow handle is inserted into the “fork” formed by the thumb and forefinger.
With a low grip, the back of the handle rests tightly on the base of the thumb, and the lateral part fits snugly against the muscles of the palm. The conventional axis of the wrist joint is located at an angle of 45 ° to the plane of the shot. The middle part of the hand is approximately 120 ° to the forearm. With a low grip, the area of contact between the palm and the grip is greatest.
With a medium grip, the contact area is significantly reduced due to the fact that the hand is straightened, the angle relative to the forearm is approximately 180 ° and therefore there is almost no bend between the hand and the forearm. The base of the thumb and the bottom of the palm do not touch the bow handle.
With a high grip, the hand is slightly lowered in relation to the forearm, and the area of its contact with the bow handle is even more reduced.
The position of the forearm is mainly dictated by the need to ensure free passage of the bowstring when fired. To do this, the shoulder should be pronated at the shoulder joint so as to create a minimum of the forearm surfaces protruding towards the shot plane. the articulation of the forearm with the shoulder must be rigid, these two links make up a single whole. Due to internal forces, it is necessary to eliminate possible degrees of freedom in the elbow and wrist joints.
Right hand position. This is the hand that grips the , holds and releases the bowstring, and also participates in drawing the bow.
Grip in archery technique is a method of holding the bowstring – it can be deep or medium.
Deep grip is most common. It is characterized by the fact that the hand, carrying out the grip, is located perpendicular to the string (before drawing the bow). The bowstring is gripped by three (sometimes two) fingers so that the load on them is as uniform as possible, and the bowstring itself is located at the extreme bend of the distal phalanges of the fingers (index, middle, ring). The rest of the fingers and palm should be as straight as possible. The thumb and little finger should be as relaxed as possible. With a middle grip, the string is approximately in the middle of the distal phalanges of the fingers. The arrow shank fits between the index and middle fingers and should not touch or pinch when pulling the bow and firing the arrow. For this purpose, an instep support is installed on the fingertip.
After performing the grip, the left hand raises the bow, the right, being in a half-bent state, holds the bowstring.
Before starting the tension, the right shoulder and forearm are located in a horizontal plane, while the shoulder joint should be lowered, if possible, the elbow of the right hand is slightly raised in relation to the longitudinal axis of the arrow.
In sports shooting from a compound bow, a special technical device is usually used to grip and hold the bowstring, called either a release (release), or a release (release), which has been used more often recently.
In this case, the reelis (uncoupler), depending on the design, is either held by the fingers of the right hand (T-shaped), or is attached with a leather strap on the forearm (wrist).
The movement of all links of the right half of the belt of the upper limbs must be coordinated so that the string moves in the plane of the bow. When pulling it, the position of the fingers on the string and the general position of the hand relative to the plane of the shot should not change.
The bow is pulled simultaneously by the muscles of the right arm and back. The initial phase of pulling (the first phase) of the bow is carried out mainly by the muscles of the right arm. The middle (second), and especially the final (third) phases of bow pulling are performed mainly by contraction of the back muscles that bring the scapula to the spine.
The final phase of drawing the bow is most important because immediately before its beginning, the hand participating in the drawing of the bow passes (or is fixed, depending on the type of technique) through certain points of contact located on the face (the tip of the nose and the middle of the chin or only the chin, etc.).etc.). In the event that the hand is fixed under the chin, it has some varieties depending on the position of the fingers: submandibular, submandibular, and cervical.
Currently, submandibular fixation is most widespread, when the hand is under the chin, the thumb and little finger are as relaxed as possible. After fixing and adjusting the aiming, the hand continues its movement along the jawbone due to the contraction of the muscles of the back and arm. This movement, after the fixation has been completed, is usually called “reach”.
In another variant of the technique, the right hand touches the face at the same points (the main thing is that these landmarks are always constant), but does not stop, but as the aiming is refined it slowly moves backward along the jawbone, i.e. the effort to pull the bow does not stop.
During the final phase of drawing the bow, when the hand, under the chin, moves backward along the jawbone due to the contraction of the muscles of the arm and back (the main work in this phase should be on the back muscles), the arrow comes out from under the clicker, a click will be heard and the release takes place. The main requirement for the final phase of drawing the bow is that it must continue without stopping after clicking the clicker and at the moment the arrow is released.
As you draw the compound bow, the character changes. this is due to the design features of the weapon (bow). The main effort for pulling is developed in the initial (first) phase (70% of the bow’s pulling force). In the second phase, there is a rather sharp decrease in the magnitude of the force (30% of the bow pulling force). When performing the third (final) phase of drawing the bow, the muscle tension is significantly less than in its first phase. It makes up about 30% of the bow’s pulling force and practically does not change as the hand approaches certain fixation points on the face.
Considering these features, it is necessary to pay special attention to the position and work of the hand holding the bow, because increased requirements are imposed on it to maintain a reliable stop on the bow both during the first and during the second phases of its tension.
It should also be noted that in sports shooting from a compound bow using an opener, the right hand in the final phase of pulling, as a rule, is located to the right of the face and touches the right cheek, and is not located under the jawbone, and stretching is not performed as such. However, the tension of the muscles of the back and arm, performing the tension of the bow during the fixation of the hand and the release (release) of the bowstring, should be sufficient to hold it, and even subjectively, its increase should be felt. This can prevent uncontrolled relaxation of the muscles in the back and arm and the “swinging” of the right arm forward.
The movement of the trigger finger (pressing the trigger or the trigger of the release) must be smooth and autonomous so as not to cause an uncontrolled increase in tension on the muscle groups directly involved in this movement.
is the release of the bowstring from the grip.It is done during the final draw of the bow. The main requirement for release is the instant, simultaneous and complete relaxation of the fingers holding the string. If this condition is met, the bowstring itself opens completely relaxed fingers and leaves them with a minimum deviation from the plane of the shot.
Relaxation of the fingers and release of the bowstring from the grip occurs at the click of the clicker, but you must always remember that the bow tension after the click of the clicker and at the time of release should not be interrupted.
In the case of using the uncoupler, the fingers of the hand that draws the bow and holds the string are not directly involved in its release. The release in this case can be called a descent, because depending on the design of the breaker, the archer presses with his thumb or forefinger a special trigger button or trigger, which activates the trigger to release the bowstring.
When using a breaker, it is possible to achieve a minimum deviation of the bowstring and bow from the plane of the shot, and due to this, the deformation of the arrow is reduced, which ultimately has a positive effect on the accuracy of fire.
When executing a shot, the archer strives for the best stability of the “shooter-weapon” system. For this, it becomes necessary to stop breathing for the duration of its execution, i.e. exclude unwanted chest movements. Holding the breath for 10-15 seconds is not difficult even for an untrained person. This time is quite enough for the execution of the shot. As the bow is pulled and immediately in front of it, breathing becomes more and more shallow and is delayed by the archer at a natural breathing pause, and the stop should be at a moment slightly less than half-exhalation.This is the most rational and natural cessation of breathing, in which a slight tone of the respiratory muscles remains, corresponding to the general tone of the body.
The level of oxygen in the blood and its supply in the lungs are quite sufficient for the normal functioning of all body systems for 10-15 seconds. Moreover, with training, the reflex threshold of the urge to inhale is pushed back with a decrease in oxygen in the blood.
With a similar breath holding, the archer does not experience oxygen starvation, i.e.That is, the state of hypoxia does not occur, and therefore there is no need for hyperventilation of the lungs. In the case of hyperventilation of the lungs, an undesirable phenomenon for the archer with blood oxygen can occur, which causes slight dizziness, uncoordinated movements and loss of stability.
Aiming technique consists in aiming and holding the front sight in the aiming area in the center of the target (as a rule). The front sight can be rectangular, trapezoidal, in the form of a point, round and annular. While aiming, the archer mainly sees the aiming device, bowstring and target. The device of the eye does not allow at the same time to equally clearly see the sighting device, the bowstring and the target, i.e. three objects at different distances. Therefore, the eye is focused in such a way that the front sight is most clearly visible, the target is less clearly and the bowstring is even less clearly. The bowstring can be to the right or to the left of the front sight, which is of no fundamental importance. The basic requirement is that the string should always be on the same side of the front sight and at the same distance from it.
When performing aiming when shooting from a classic bow, it must be remembered that the hand that pulls the bow must touch the jaw bone and slowly move backward due to the contraction of the muscles of the arm and back. The mouth should be tightly closed.
These actions must be monitored, otherwise the distance between the eyes and the arrow may change, which will lead to an error in aiming.
When performing aiming from a compound bow, as a rule, a level is used to control the position of the bow in the horizontal plane, an optical sight and a pip-site (a special device with a small hole that is attached to the bowstring at the level of the eye involved in aiming). So we can talk about a certain combination of a diopter with an optical sight. When the bow of the shooter’s eye is fully drawn, the middle of the hole (diopter) of the pip-site, the front sight and the aiming point are located on one straight line.
The line formed by the pupil of the eye, the front sight and the aiming point is called the aiming line.
Aiming area – is the area of a circle bounded by a circle centered on the aiming point. It can be more or less depending on the degree of stability of the bow position. The higher the skill level of the archer, the less the area of oscillation of the front sight.
The position of the head should provide the most advantageous position for the eyes. The neck muscles should in no case be overstrained, which can lead to discoordination of actions in the final phase of drawing the bow.
– The most difficult bullet? When they shot at me from the side, Sorokin replies without hesitation. – I had to train in order to collapse like a knocked down one and not get injured at the same time.
– Did everything go according to plan?
– Not really. Anatoly didn’t score yet. We didn’t want to do that much. But it still didn’t work out badly.
– Show me where the arrow hit you.
– Yes, right in the middle of the chest somewhere. I do not know for sure. When he saw that Golyshev was pulling the string, he closed his eyes. But everyone got equal pleasure from what was happening.
-Even when Linus Umark started at you with a blazing stick?
– Then there were fears. She was on fire and flashed right in front of my face. Lucky to pass by. But I could smell the odor.
– Did you singe your eyebrows?
– Yes, it seems not, nothing happened.(Rubs his face with his hand).
– Was the washer visible in the flame?
– Not always. It is visible, it will disappear.
– From a professional point of view, whose bullet did you like the most?
– With hoes for rounders. Or lacrosse? The guys had a good idea, it’s a pity that it didn’t work out.
-How do you like the first All-Star Game in your career?
– I was worried at first. But then I completely merged into this joyful atmosphere.I get great pleasure.
– Ready for the match?
– Yes, we are leaving now. You have to win! I have already been told that I will defend the gate in the second half of the meeting. When everything is resolved.
-Why did you get earflaps for your team, but not for the East team?
– They also seem to have it, they just for some reason did not go.
– Is it more fun for strikers in the All-Star Game than for goalkeepers?
– That’s for sure! They score almost every minute and celebrate goals. And we are missing! So the goalkeepers will definitely not have much fun right now.
-Are you morally ready for the fact that you will have to take a lot of puck out of the net today?
– I still believe that there is not much … Let the match not count towards the KHL championship. But we, goalkeepers, still have sediment after such a hail of missed washers.
Hockey and virtual reality are a new trend in training.

If you put a hockey player in an environment in which he can play a game a thousand times, over and over again, the brain will process various decision situations and learn from it.
Hockey and virtual reality is a new trend in the sports industry. Bob Tetiva, Czech entrepreneur and CEO of Sense Arena. The company has developed a virtual reality system for training hockey players and goalkeepers.
Bob has over 20 years of experience in innovation and startups. And for the last 3 years he has been focusing on Sense Arena. A startup based on the latest VR technologies that hit the market around 2016-17.
How does Sense Arena hockey and virtual reality work?
Service develops and presents a virtual reality training system for hockey players and goalkeepers. The company currently has over a thousand subscriptions and over 5,000 active users worldwide.
How does the Sense Arena virtual hockey practice work?
You put on a VR headset and are transported to a virtual ice rink. The ice arena is the same size as in the NHL. And you have a real workout.
Sense Arena has two modules, one for players and one for goalkeepers.
If you are a player, then hold the club in your hands and you can wear gloves.
There is a special sensor on the club, and you keep it as if on ice. And you can see the surrounding space through the VR helmet.
The program tracks the position and movement of the club, and this is then visualized in virtual reality.
Virtual game teammates are artificially intelligent avatars who have been taught to react realistically to all your actions.
Sense Arena has over fifty exercises in which you can practice a variety of skills and play scenarios.
You can play with your teammates, you need to fool the defenders, you can shoot and pass, score and get the puck.
The puck is virtual, so you don’t have to worry about smashing something around!
All you need is a space of at least three by three meters for you to work with the stick. But Sense Arena has also developed training in eight-by-eight courts with synthetic ice where players can skate.
What are the benefits of ice hockey training in virtual reality?
The key benefit is the high intensity training. . This is because you are the center of all exercise.
In standard training, you have twenty athletes on the ice for one hour. Each of them is in motion for about 10-12 minutes. In fact, he owns the puck for about one and a half minutes during an hour’s workout.
Using the Sense Arena VR virtual trainer, the athlete does thousands of touches and reps. Therefore, half an hour in VR will be equivalent to approximately 2.5 hours of practice on ice.
You just can’t stand such a long workout on ice!
But in a simulator, you can make tremendous learning progress in a short amount of time. After all, the simulator is five times the intensity of training.
VR-simulation also accelerates the development of the player’s cognitive functions, or, more simply, hockey flair.
Sense Arena Goalkeeper Version
In hockey and virtual reality, the goalkeeper has a completely different skill set than the players.
Special “goalkeeper” exercises to improve the reading of throws, control defenders in front of the goalkeeper, work on taking the correct position.
The NHL’s professional season has been significantly shortened this year. The games take place for only four months. And to keep fit and focus, goalkeepers love to use Sense Arena.
Today, more than forty professional NHL goalkeepers use the Sense Arena.
How does VR improve cognitive performance in hockey players?
Historically, hockey players’ training has been primarily focused on strength and coordination. Then the focus shifted to technology – materials for shoes, clothing, knitwear, wearables, etc.And also for special food, sleep and regimen.
But not much has been done to improve cognitive performance.
This hockey IQ controls your actions, speed of decision making and spatial orientation.
This is important especially in team sports.
After all, fans go crazy when they see the smart team actions of players in hockey, basketball or football.
And this can be taught and learned!
If you talk to neuroscientists, they will tell you that the brain works by experience. This is how you learn.
If you put a hockey player in an environment where he can play a game a thousand times, over and over again, the brain will process various decision situations and learn from them.
But you can’t play ten real hockey games a day. This would be physically impossible. But you can get that kind of experience with virtual reality simulations.
In VR, you see the ice, the ice rink, teammates, opponents, the goalkeeper, and touch the puck. You do all the same, only not on real ice, but at home or in the gym. And through the number of repetitions, you keep working on remembering decisions and environments and recognizing patterns. This is how you improve your play and your cognitive functions related to play.
Which ice hockey teams use Sense Arena for VR training? How often do players practice in virtual reality?
Sense Arena has five NHL teams that already use Sense Arena on a daily basis.
Sense Arena recently announced a three-year contract as Official Cognitive Training Partners with New Jersey Devils and Arizona Coyotes. Teams use the platform for both field players and goalkeepers as part of their training program.
In addition to the NHL, there are over a thousand companies that, on average, use more than 40 minutes of training time per week per week.
What is the geographic coverage of virtual reality ice hockey training?
Players using Sense Arena is currently located in twenty-four countries. The geographical distribution is great, but the highest concentration of the system is in North America. The USA and Canada account for about 87% of users. Only 13% of users are in Europe, and very few in Japan, Australia and Malaysia.
In Europe, the German Ice Hockey Federation also has a Sense Arena system in its training center. In Russia, Sense Arena is not officially used yet, but several private training centers are connected. we have some private affairs.
In general, in Europe players tend to use virtual reality hockey for themselves privately, while in North America consumers are a big hockey business.
There are already nearly 100 training centers in the United States and Canada that use the VR training system.
How is VR being used for marketing by hockey teams?
From the start of next season, when the ice arenas reopen to fans, there will be a fan chat area in the NHL.
It will be a pleasure for fans to be in the spotlight, albeit virtually, face to face with professional players. Feel the size of the arena, feel the speed of the throw, get the physical experience!
New Jersey Devils also use virtual reality to enroll children in hockey schools.
Sense Arena includes analytics and diagnostics functions.
When you look at a virtual gym, it is a kind of digital space.Everything you do inside her, be it acceleration, reaction speed, or decision making, can be measured.
Another advantage of the VR environment is that the conditions are stable and always the same. Whereas in the real world conditions will be different depending on where you are – be it in Helsinki, Boston or Prague. This virtual reality learning element can be used for competition and testing.
You can check the quality of the training of players and goalkeepers, assess their opportunities for improvement and create personalized training plans based on the data.
Has the pandemic affected hockey players’ training? Has there been a surge in interest in VR-based learning?
The pandemic did make an impact. Many skating rinks and training centers have been closed. Therefore, hockey in virtual reality allowed people to continue training. On the other hand, of course, some people were conservative and were wary of such an idea. Overall, however, the pandemic has given a huge boost to adoption and use.
What is the future of VR sports training?
There are currently four other companies in the world offering virtual reality sports training. Each of them focuses on one sport – baseball, ice hockey, soccer and American football. Skiing, lacrosse and golf are all related to virtual reality.
The industry is growing rapidly and Sense Arena alone has over 5,000 users. Winreality does a great job in baseball.
What are the benefits of training ice hockey in virtual reality versus training in the real world?
- Training intensity – due to the number of repetitions.
- Ideal tool for training your hockey flair – because you can simulate game situations.
- 3D Playback – A feature that allows players to watch replays of their actions
