What are the standard lacrosse field dimensions for different age groups and levels of play. How do field layouts differ between men’s and women’s lacrosse. What are the key components and markings on a regulation lacrosse field.
Understanding Lacrosse Field Basics
Lacrosse is a dynamic sport played on a rectangular field with specific dimensions and markings. The field layout is crucial for proper gameplay and can vary depending on the level of play, age group, and gender. Understanding these dimensions is essential for players, coaches, and field managers alike.
Key Components of a Lacrosse Field
- Playing surface
- Sidelines and end lines
- Goals and creases
- Midfield line
- Wing areas
- Substitution areas
Each of these components plays a vital role in the game, dictating player positioning, ball movement, and overall strategy.
Standard Men’s Lacrosse Field Dimensions
For men’s lacrosse at the high school, college, and professional levels, the field dimensions are relatively consistent. The optimal field size is 110 yards long and 60 yards wide. However, there is some flexibility allowed in official regulations.
Field Length and Width
The field should measure between 110 to 140 yards from end line to end line, with a width ranging from 60 to 70 yards from sideline to sideline. This flexibility allows for adaptation to available space while maintaining the integrity of the game.
Goal Placement and Crease
Goals are centered equidistant from the sidelines and placed 15 yards from each end line. The crease, a critical area in lacrosse, is a circle with a 9-foot radius surrounding each goal.
Why is the crease important in lacrosse? The crease serves as a protected area for the goalie and regulates offensive player positioning near the goal. No offensive player may enter or touch the crease during play, making it a crucial tactical element in the game.
Women’s Lacrosse Field Specifications
Women’s lacrosse fields share many similarities with men’s fields but have some distinct differences in dimensions and markings.
Field Dimensions
The standard women’s lacrosse field measures 120 yards in length and 70 yards in width. This is slightly larger than the typical men’s field, providing more space for the unique aspects of the women’s game.
Arc and Fan Markings
A key difference in women’s lacrosse is the presence of the 8-meter arc and 12-meter fan. These markings are crucial for free position shots and defensive positioning.
How do the arc and fan affect gameplay in women’s lacrosse? The 8-meter arc provides a clear shooting lane for free position shots, while the 12-meter fan helps organize defensive positioning during these situations. These unique features contribute to the strategic elements of the women’s game.
Youth Lacrosse Field Adaptations
Youth lacrosse often requires adaptations to field dimensions to accommodate younger players and smaller playing areas.
Reduced Field Sizes
For youth players, a reduced-size field can be used. These fields are typically rectangular, measuring 60-70 yards in length and 30-40 yards in width. This smaller size allows for better control of the game and is more suitable for younger players’ physical capabilities.
Proportional Line Markings
When using a reduced field size, it’s important to maintain proportional line markings. This includes a bold center line marked perpendicular to the sidelines and other key markings scaled to fit the smaller dimensions.
Why is it important to adapt field sizes for youth players? Smaller fields for youth players encourage skill development, increase player involvement, and make the game more enjoyable and manageable for younger athletes. It allows them to focus on fundamental skills without being overwhelmed by the full-sized field.
Specialized Areas on the Lacrosse Field
Beyond the basic dimensions, lacrosse fields feature several specialized areas that play crucial roles in gameplay.
Wing Areas
Wing areas are designated spaces on either side of the center line where players line up for face-offs. These areas are crucial for gaining possession and transitioning from defense to offense.
Substitution Area
The substitution area, located on one side of the field, allows for player exchanges during gameplay. This area is typically 10 yards wide and positioned at the center of the field.
How does the substitution area impact game strategy? The substitution area allows teams to make tactical changes without stopping play, enabling coaches to adjust their lineup based on game situations and player fatigue. Efficient use of this area can provide a competitive advantage.
Lacrosse Field Markings and Their Significance
Various lines and markings on a lacrosse field serve important purposes in gameplay and officiating.
Restraining Lines
Restraining lines are marked 20 yards from each end line in men’s lacrosse and 30 yards from each goal line in women’s lacrosse. These lines help regulate player positioning and offside rules.
Center Line
The center line divides the field in half and is crucial for face-offs and determining which team has possession in certain situations.
What role does the center line play in lacrosse strategy? The center line is key for face-offs, which occur at the start of each quarter and after each goal. It also serves as a reference point for offensive and defensive strategies, helping teams organize their formations and transitions.
Field Maintenance and Layout Considerations
Proper field maintenance and layout are crucial for safe and fair play in lacrosse.
Surface Types
Lacrosse can be played on various surfaces, including natural grass and artificial turf. Each surface type requires different maintenance approaches and can affect gameplay differently.
Line Marking Techniques
Accurate and clear line marking is essential for proper gameplay. This can be achieved through various methods, including paint, chalk, or removable tape, depending on the surface and frequency of use.
Why is proper field maintenance important in lacrosse? Well-maintained fields not only ensure fair play but also contribute to player safety by providing consistent surfaces and clearly visible boundaries. Regular maintenance helps prevent injuries and enhances the overall quality of the game.
Adapting Lacrosse Fields for Multi-Sport Use
Many facilities use their lacrosse fields for multiple sports, requiring adaptable layouts and marking systems.
Overlapping Field Markings
When lacrosse fields are used for other sports like soccer or field hockey, it’s common to have overlapping field markings. Using different colors for each sport can help differentiate the lines.
Removable Goal Systems
Implementing removable goal systems allows for quick transitions between sports, maximizing the utility of the playing surface.
How can multi-sport field use benefit athletic programs? Multi-sport fields offer cost-effective solutions for schools and sports facilities, allowing them to host a variety of events and accommodate different sports programs without the need for separate dedicated fields. This versatility can lead to increased participation in various sports and more efficient use of available space.
In conclusion, understanding lacrosse field dimensions and layouts is crucial for players, coaches, and facility managers. From the standard dimensions of men’s and women’s fields to the adaptations made for youth players, each aspect of the field plays a vital role in the sport. Proper maintenance and the ability to adapt fields for multi-sport use further enhance the value and utility of these playing surfaces. As the sport of lacrosse continues to grow in popularity, the importance of well-designed and maintained fields will only increase, ensuring safe, fair, and enjoyable play for all participants.

Is Lacrosse Played on a Football Field? (+Exact Field Layout) – Lacrosse Pack
Football fields do not only serve as the host for football games, they also host boys and girls soccer games and even rugby games. Since schools only have a limited amount of field space to offer, it makes sense to open up football fields to a variety of field sports. For this reason, some people wonder whether it is possible for lacrosse to be played on a football field.
Field lacrosse, the outdoor version of the sport, can be played on a football field. However, the line markings must be improvised to fit legal lacrosse boundaries. Box lacrosse, the indoor version of the sport, cannot be played on a football field since this version is played in a closed-off arena.
This can be a bit tricky for lacrosse newcomers to understand because they may not even know that two versions of the sport exist. Below, we will go into greater depth about why football fields can cater to field lacrosse, but not box lacrosse. In addition, the exact playing setup for both versions of lacrosse will be graphically depicted so that you can have a better understanding of how these playing areas are organized.
Why Field Lacrosse Can Be Played on Football Fields
Football fields complement field lacrosse games extremely well because of the open field playing area. Lacrosse fields are not meant to be boxed in an enclosed space. They’re meant to be expansive, granting players ample room to run freely and take advantage of their speed. There aren’t many other field spaces as a football field, so it makes sense that the majority of lacrosse games would be housed on football fields.
Plus, football fields are typically leveled out. It is unfavorable for teams to play their games on an uneven field where there are dips and valleys scattered at various points. Not only does it hamper player performance, it’s also an injury risk for players. It’s not too far-fetched for a player to step into one of these dips in the field and twist their ankle.
Although the playing boundaries of lacrosse do not exactly fit the markings of a football field, the field can be marked off with additional cones or spray paint to better accommodate lacrosse games.
For those of you that do not know, the dimensions of a lacrosse field are actually slightly larger than that of a football field. As a reference, football fields are 100 yards long and 53 1/3 yards wide (source). Lacrosse fields, on the other hand, are 110 yards long and 60 yards wide (source).
Since this slight difference in field dimensions is rather easy to fix, many lacrosse teams opt to play their games on football fields. It’s rare to see a field that’s dedicated exclusively for the use of lacrosse. Many schools simply don’t have the budget to construct fields devoted solely for lacrosse use, even at the collegiate level. For this reason, it’s only logical that lacrosse teams make use of vacant football fields in the spring, when football is out of season.
As a side note, lacrosse can be played on both grass and turf football fields. The exact makeup of the field matters little in terms of playability.
Why Box Lacrosse Cannot Be Played on Football Fields
As far as box lacrosse is concerned, football fields and this version of lacrosse do not mesh well together.
First off, box lacrosse is the indoor version of the sport that is generally played in the winter. Since football fields are predominantly located outdoors, this goes against the very nature of what this version of lacrosse is all about. For places with harsh winters, playing box lacrosse on an outdoor football field would not be feasible.
Secondly, box lacrosse operates in an enclosed playing area, similar to a rink in ice hockey. In fact, most box lacrosse games are played on ice hockey rinks where the ice has been cleared away. Turf is matted down onto the rink in place of the ice so players aren’t slipping and sliding all over the playing area. This improvised rink turned turf playing area is called a box not a field, hence the name box lacrosse.
Since football fields are not equipped with boards to close off the playing area, these fields are not ideal for box lacrosse. This lacrosse adaptation is meant to force players into close quarters by hemming them in with the boards, in stark contrast to the openness of field lacrosse.
Lastly, marking off the field for box lacrosse would be a pain to implement on a football field. The natural markings of the football field would get in the way of the markings needed for box lacrosse. It would be difficult for box lacrosse players to make sense of the box designations with so many different overlapping lines. Plus, it wouldn’t look aesthetically pleasing with all these markings layered on top of each other.
Standard Field Layout for Field Lacrosse
Now that you know field lacrosse can be played on football fields, you’re probably wondering how these football fields are improvised to suit lacrosse games.
To properly describe how this is done, it’s necessary to understand exactly how a lacrosse field is structured. Learning this field layout is best done through visual means, so I included the diagram below for your reference.
Keeping this diagram in the back of your mind, let’s break down each element of how football fields are modified for lacrosse.
Sidelines
Since lacrosse fields are slightly wider than a football field, the sidelines are pushed out a few extra yards. Typically, these sideline boundaries are marked off with spray paint or bright cones.
End Lines
Lacrosse fields are also slightly longer than a football field, so the end lines are actually pushed out into the end zone of the football field. Similar to the sidelines, the end lines are marked off with spray paint or bright cones.
Creases
The circular creases that surround each lacrosse goal are yet another modification that must be added to a football field. Lacrosse teams have the option of laying down a foldable, transportable crease around each goal or painting a circular crease directly onto the field. Typically, teams go with the latter option, as portable creases have a tendency to move around when disturbed.
Face-Off X
As the name suggests, the face-off X is an X painted directly in the center of the midline. This must be painted directly onto the football field so that referees have a consistent location to initiate face-offs.
Wing Areas
Next up is the wing areas. The wing areas are field lines that lie perpendicular to the midline. They’re 20 yards in length and are positioned 20 yards away from the face-off X. These are painted directly onto the football field so wing players (midfielders) know where to legally stand prior to a face-off.
Restraining Boxes
The restraining boxes is another area that must be marked onto the football field. Again, this is done with athletic spray paint.
Substitution Area
Lastly, the substitution area must be marked off on a football field. This is done on the lacrosse sideline where both team benches are, nearest to the scorer’s table.
Standard Box Layout for Box Lacrosse
Given the slightly different subset of rules for box lacrosse, there’s a slightly different layout to the lacrosse field as well. Nonetheless, there’s still a noticeable resemblance between the two lacrosse playing areas.
Much in the same way as we did it before, I’ve provided a diagram below of a standard box playing area so that you can familiarize yourself with its particular layout.
Although you may not be able to tell from the picture, the playing area for box lacrosse is much smaller than than the playing area for field lacrosse. A standard indoor lacrosse field is the same relative size as a hockey rink, coming in at 200 feet in length and 85 feet in width.
A lacrosse box bears many of the same organizational designations that can be found on a lacrosse field, such as the midline, restraining lines, creases, and face-off X. However, there are also some glaring discrepancies.
For one, the overall structure of a lacrosse box is not rectangular shaped, featuring rounded edges instead of the characteristic rectangular corners of lacrosse fields. This allows the ball to travel along the boards without snagging in one particular area.
In addition, the playing area behind the goals is considerably reduced. Since there’s not much room for players to operate behind the goal, it changes the entire dynamic of how attacks are conducted from behind the goal. Also, the crease actually takes on a different shape because of the lack of space behind the goal. Rather than being completely circular all around, the curvature of the crease actually cuts off behind the goal to allow for additional room.
These subtle modifications, combined with the significant shrinkage of playing area, promotes an altogether different kind of play style from field lacrosse.
Can Field Lacrosse Be Played on Any Other Field Types?
With the connection between field lacrosse and football fields established, it’s time to clear up all the other possible playing areas that can accommodate lacrosse games.
One possible option that we haven’t discussed is a soccer field. Soccer fields meets all the criteria that lacrosse needs for a viable playing area. They’re completely flat, there’s a considerable amount of space for players to work with, and they’re usually well maintained. For all of these reasons, soccer fields are another reasonable location where lacrosse games can be held.
Furthermore, lacrosse games can also be played on regular, flat patches of grass in a public field or park. Although this option may not be as advantageous as a well tended turf football field or soccer field, it certainly does the job.
The only stipulations that have to be met for a lacrosse field is a sufficient amount of room and an absence of injury hazards.
So long as these two precedents are met, there’s nothing stopping lacrosse games from being held in these public fields and parks.
The use of public fields and parks for lacrosse games is especially common for lacrosse tournaments. When I played club lacrosse, there were many times where our team would travel to these vast patches of open, grassy fields where a bunch of different lacrosse fields had been newly set up. I remember there being times where I would lose my bearings wandering around in between games simply because there were 20+ fields!
Tournament coordinators choose these areas, rather than football fields, because it’s a cost effective way to host numerous lacrosse bouts simultaneously. It’s also more convenient for lacrosse teams because the entire tournament is condensed into one single area. Teams can play multiple games in a single day staying in the vicinity of the big grassy fields without having to hop on a bus to get to another football field all the way across town.
With that being said, football fields still reign supreme when it comes to sanctioned high school and collegiate games. Since there’s only one game to be played, it’s worth it to travel a bit farther and play on a higher quality of field rather than a random patch of grass. Football fields are some of the best field conditions you’re likely ever going to find, so it makes sense for these more formal lacrosse events.
The Bottom Line
Field lacrosse can be played on football fields, whereas box lacrosse cannot. Football fields may not be specially equipped for lacrosse, but the field can be manipulated to fit the needs of field lacrosse. It’s well worth the effort to play on a high quality football field instead of an unkept grassy lot, which is why the majority of lacrosse games are hosted on football fields.

US Lacrosse Announces Optional Unified Field Markings for 2018 – Tampa Lax Report
Via US Lacrosse Press Release – Included in the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and US Lacrosse rule changes for the 2018 high school lacrosse season was the approval of an optional 120-yard unified field size that can be used for both boys’ and girls’ lacrosse. The existing field sizes for high school lacrosse can still be used, but the unified field is a legal alternative.
“This represents the leadership of the rules subcommittees of US Lacrosse and NFHS, on both the boys and girls sides, working collaboratively to grow the game safely,” said Caitlin Kelley, senior manager of the women’s game for US Lacrosse. “Representatives from both the boys and girls games made adjustments to their field dimensions to make this work while preserving the integrity and safety of their games.”
“We had feedback from administrators that they wanted this to happen,” said Rick Lake, senior manager of the men’s game for US Lacrosse. “This set of field markings saves time and money. It will make the game easier for athletic directors to manage with one less set of lines on their turf fields or when lining their fields.”
“The option of adding a unified field to the games of boys’ and girls’ lacrosse will create easier access to an already fast-growing sport, making it easier to administer, more fan-friendly, and providing access to the sport for more student-athletes,” said James Weaver, director of performing arts and sports for the NFHS.
The table below shows the adjustments to the field dimensions with the unified field versus the existing field sizes.
Measurements | Current Boys | ||
---|---|---|---|
Field Length | 120 yards | 110 yards | 110-140 yards |
Midfield Area | 40 yards | 40 yards | 30-40 yards |

Goal Line to End Line | 15 yards | 15 yards | 10-20 yards |
Goal Circle/Crease | 9 feet | 9 feet | 8.5 feet |
US Lacrosse approved the use of a unified field size for youth lacrosse in 2016 and has received positive feedback from event operators. The Federation of International Lacrosse approved a unified field size in a 2012 vote, began implementing the change with the 2015 FIL U19 Women’s World Championship, and it will be used for all upcoming FIL world championships.
Football Field Dimensions and Goal Post Sizes: A Quick Guide
In American football the standard field dimensions are 120 yards long and 53 1/3 yards wide. The last 10 yards of length on either end of the field are considered “end zones” in which a player scores. These dimensions are consistent for football played at the high school, college and professional (NFL) level.
Length of a Football Field
The total length of a football field is 120 yards. The playing field is 100 yards (300 feet) long, and each end zone is 10 yards (30 feet) deep. The field is marked with a yard line every 5 yards, and every 10 yards is marked by a field number. The hash marks are 1 yard apart, used to mark each down when the ball is between the yard lines.

Width of a Football Field
The standard football field is 53 1/3 yards, or 160 feet, wide. The primary difference among different levels of play is the space between the two sets of hash marks:
- High School — 53 feet, 4 inches
- College — 40 feet
- NFL — 18 feet, 6 inches
All plays begin on or between the hash marks, depending on where the previous play ended. For example, if the previous play ended along the right sideline, the ball will be placed on the right hash mark.

Goal Dimensions
The football goal crossbar is 10 feet high, and the posts are an additional 20 feet high, for a total height of 30 feet. NFL and NCAA goal posts are 18 feet, 6 inches wide. High school goal posts are 23 feet, 4 inches wide.

Lacrosse Rules for Girls | SportsRec
Rules for youth girls lacrosse differ from women’s and some high school lacrosse rules. Girls rule modifications depend upon age and grade division and are typically due to safety concerns as well as an emphasis on development of basic skills. Girls youth lacrosse also incorporates levels, the highest being FC, which stands for “full checking,” followed by levels A, B and finally C, the lowest level. Levels incorporate specific rules that are enforced based on a team’s experience.
Players
Twelve field players comprise a girls lacrosse team in high school and youth levels FC, A and B. In addition to the optional of use of a goalkeeper, level C teams field 7 girls.
Playing Field
In general, lacrosse field dimensions are comparable to a soccer field. Based on the US Lacrosse Official Rules for Girls and Women’s Lacrosse, high school uses a field 110 to 140 yards in length and 60 to 70 yards in width. Youth levels FC and A girls play on a recommended field size of 120 yards by 70 yards, with level B dimensions slightly smaller. A 70 by 25 yard field constitutes level C playing area. All levels of youth girls lacrosse require the basic field markings of sidelines, end lines, a center line, 8 meter arc, goal circles (also known as the crease) and goal lines. US Lacrosse also specifies that a 12-meter fan, center circle, and restraining lines are necessary for high school and levels FC, A and B.
Game Duration
Girls lacrosse games are split into two halves, and vary in length depending upon level of play. A maximum game length of 25 minutes each half is allowed for high school, levels FC, A and B, whereas level C is permitted 20 minutes per half at most.
Equipment
Regardless of age or level of play, all girls are required to wear protective gear in the form of a mouth guard and eye mask. Goalkeepers wear a helmet, throat guard, chest protector, gloves, pelvic protection and shin and thigh padding. A regulation lacrosse stick, also called a crosse, is required for participation in girls lacrosse and is strung to create a shallow “pocket.” In high school, levels FC and A, if the top of the ball is even with or above the sidewalls of the stick head when dropped into the pocket and slight pressure is applied, the crosse is legal. In levels B and C, modified pockets are permitted, where half the ball may fall below the bottom of the sidewall. Although lacrosse balls come in many colors, only yellow or bright orange are permitted for use in games.
Contact
Girls lacrosse is considered a noncontact sport, consisting of rules that dictate minimal physical contact. In high school and level FC, players are allowed to use their stick head to knock the ball from their opponent’s stick head, called checking. Checking is only permitted when performed in a quick, controlled, downward motion away from the body. Checking allowed when the entire crosse is below the shoulders is considered modified checking, and is permitted in level A. No checking of any kind is permitted in levels B and C.
Playing the Game
Each game begins with a draw, where the ball is placed between the heads of two players’ sticks held horizontally and positioned above the waist. On the whistle, sticks of both players are pulled up and away from each other, causing the ball to fling into the air. Another important rule involves the crease, and prohibits players from crossing the line with any body part or crosse. Only the crosse of players in high school and level FC are permitted to cross the crease when following through on a shot. Stopping and standing still on the whistle is also a basic, but important rule, and girls cannot move again until the whistle is blown. Finally, there are numerous minor and major fouls that may occur in a game, details of which can be found in the US Lacrosse Official Rules for Girls and Women’s Lacrosse.

Lacrosse, Rugby and Field Hockey Field Maintenance
By John Kmitta
STMA classifies the “sporting grounds” category as fields for “non-mainstream” sports (i.e., anything outside the “Big 4” of football, baseball, soccer and softball). However, in recent years, sports in the sporting grounds category – especially lacrosse, rugby and field hockey – have all seen growth in popularity in the United States. And while many of these “non-mainstream” sports are still played on multi-purpose fields, there are some very specific field maintenance considerations.
“The type of grass, season in which the sport is played, and how the sport is played, changes how it is maintained,” said Brian Dossett, CSFM, head turf manager, Oxner Landscape, which manages Christ Church Episcopal School, Greenville, S.C. (winner of the STMA 2019 Sporting Grounds Field of the Year award at the schools and parks level). “For example, we have a field that is used for field hockey in the fall and lacrosse in the spring. Before lacrosse was added, this field was never overseeded and required little extra attention after the season or in the spring to have great recovery from the previous field hockey season. Now that lacrosse also uses the field, overseeding is a must, and a lot of attention is given after lacrosse season to ensure great recovery.”
According to Scott Thompson, CSFM, director of landscape services at Duke University (winner of the STMA 2019 Sporting Grounds Field of the Year award at the College and University level), the biggest challenge is having one facility meet the needs of different sports in different seasons.
“For us, men’s and women’s soccer have similar needs. The field has the same dimensions and the demands on the field are generally the same,” said Thompson. “Where it starts to get challenging is during the lacrosse season where we have men’s and women’s lacrosse, which have different needs. Ultimately, it is a different style of play. The fields have different dimensions, and often that can make for challenging management strategies. With different styles of play and field dimensions we have to monitor the field closely to ensure the wear and traffic of one sport doesn’t adversely affect the field playability for the other sport.”
Thompson added that field stability and footing are paramount for all sports.
“Things like ball roll and surface smoothness are keenly important in the game of soccer but much less so for the game of lacrosse,” said Thompson. “We often have to mitigate any surface smoothness issues around the attack and scoring areas for lacrosse so they don’t adversely affect ball roll for soccer in their penalty and scoring areas.
“Typically we are playing soccer on bermudagrass and immature ryegrass,” Thomson added. “We then have a couple of months to prepare and adjust to playing lacrosse on a ryegrass field as our bermudagrass is dormant. Conversely, we have the summer months to transition our ryegrass field back to bermudagrass ahead of soccer season. The downtime between seasons provides us enough time to repair any issues and make adjustments prior to the next season.”
Thompson said his biggest challenge this year is playing all four sports on one field during the same season.
“This year the biggest thing we have to do is to take it one game at a time – meet the needs of the sport being played, and then, after the game, make the appropriate adjustments to meet the needs of the next event,” he said.
According to Dossett, the biggest challenge he faces is maintaining the goal creases on lacrosse fields.
“The goal is not very wide therefore the goalie wears this area badly,” said Dossett. “Also there is so much activity around these areas from other players either trying to score or help defend the goal. We approach this challenge in various ways. One is to move the goals during practice to an area that doesn’t see as much action during games. Constant moving of goals is a must. We re-seed these areas as we can, and sometimes even cut thick sod from the extreme out-of-play edges of the overseeded field to replace the area in front of the goals.”
Mark Heinlein, MSc, CFB, director of technical projects and research at The Motz Group, and chairman of the American Sports Builders Association, agrees that managing extreme wear areas, such as the goal crease in lacrosse, is the biggest challenge to maintaining fields in the sporting grounds category.
“That goalie sits in a 6-foot circle,” said Heinlein. “You think about a soccer goal, at 24-feet wide, the goalie is running around that area and it gets worn down. Then you compress that down, and that is the lacrosse crease. So it is a significant issue from a maintenance standpoint.”
Heinlein added that field hockey is almost always played on synthetic turf, because of requirements for ball/surface interaction and player/surface interaction. If played on a natural grass surface, field hockey requires a much different approach to field maintenance than other sports.
“While lacrosse has typically been a sport that is played on a multi-purpose field that hosts other sports like soccer or football, we are seeing more lacrosse-specific venues installed at the college level,” said Patrick Maguire, RLA, president and managing principal of Activitas. “This is also true of rugby, which has seen an uptick in popularity, even at the high school level. Since it is by far the largest of all fields, we are seeing more and more rugby-specific venues, many funded by the generous donations of former rugby alumni. Since the advent of infilled turf taking over the major stadiums that used to be traditional short pile Astroturf, we have seen many field-hockey-specific venues installed over the past decade, and that trend has continued.”
Maguire added that the past few years have seen significant growth in field hockey at the high school and college levels.
When it comes to field design and construction, rugby and field hockey have international governing bodies that recognize the importance of field playing conditions, and athlete safety, said Megan Buczynski, P.E., LEED AP, principal civil engineer at Activitas.
“Field hockey at the higher levels is typically played on a short pile system with a watering system, and has very specific recommendations for resilience and ball roll,” said Buczynski. “Rugby, be it played on natural grass or synthetic turf, has guidelines that pay particular attention to safety and resilience with the goal of minimizing the potential for concussions. Checking in with these governing bodies while planning for a field is always a good idea.”
According to Maguire, the majority of new fields built in the last decade were synthetic, but natural grass fields are making a comeback.
“I think this is really a credit to the sports field managers who have done a great job of keeping conditions on grass fields as close to optimal as possible,” he said. “We’ve also seen a great deal more interest at the professional level in hybrid field technology, as well as vacuum and air exchange systems and under-soil heating systems. The number of venues that are also looking into augmenting sunlight with artificial lighting systems is growing substantially.”
According to Buczynski, the most common question Activitas receives when designing new fields is whether sports can be combined on a multi-purpose field.
“Designing for a multi-purpose field that wants to host soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby, etc., is difficult because each sport craves a different type of surface to best support play,” she said. “Working with the owner to help him or her understand how the properties of a surface, whether it be natural or artificial, impact the sport is essential in assisting the owner with the final surface decision.”

Naperville Central High School The school for students in grades 9 through 12 is part of School District 203 of Naperville.
A school renowned for its strong academic standing and track record of athletic performance is ranked in the top 3% of the nation’s top high schools by U.S. News & World Report.
History
Illustration of the main entrance to Central High School in Naperville as it looked from 1992 to 2010. The Leadership Wing (1992 addition) is on the left, and the outside of the school’s main library is on the right. The wing was demolished in the summer of 2010 and the library was demolished in the spring of 2011 to make way for the expansion of the Three-Story Wing.
NCHS’s current structure is located on Aurora Avenue, near the downtown Naperville business district. The building is within walking distance of the Naperville Riverwalk Park / Walking Network, north of Knoch Park and the Edward Hospital campus. The school is located across the street from the historic village of Napier.
The oldest part of the current building, known by some as the “3-storey wing”, was built in 1950 and was consecrated in 1952. The previous building that housed Naperville High School (also sometimes known as Naperville High School) was built in 1916 and stood on Washington Street, east of the current location of Washington High School. This same building was used as the original Washington High School until it was replaced in 1977.
The current Naperville Central building was added in 1955, 1963, 1968, 1987, 1992 and 2009. In the 1992/93 school year, three projects in three independent locations were supplemented by a student services wing in the northeast section of the building (demolished in summer 2010 to make way for an extension), an auditorium in the northwest section of the building, and a natatorium in southern part of the building.Previous additions included a field home and student cafeteria renovation in the late 1980s, the current school library, and a large one-story classroom wing known as Flat wing .
As of the 2004/05 school year, this yields a 439,660 square feet (41,000 square meters) building, not including the use of eight mobile classrooms in two modular units. In addition, the school is currently undergoing large-scale renovations in order to completely rebuild the Three-Story Wing. The entire interior of the Flat Wing is also undergoing minor repairs. This renovation includes the relocation of the library and the reconstruction of the administration. The only sections of the school that are not being modified at all are the Auditorium and Aquatics Center, which are part of the physical education department.
Concerns have increased over the safety and reliability of Naperville Central. Complaints about asbestos, leaking roofs and disorganized structure make it the focus of the Naperville School District’s Constructions Task Force 203.The renovation began in the 2008-09 school year following a successful local referendum.
Plagiarism scandal
In 2008, Headmaster Jim Caudill borrowed a speech he gave to alumni. The speech was originally delivered by Megan Nowitzki-Plackett, at the time a teacher who was formerly a student at the school. Earlier that year, Caudill fired a newspaper advisor for profanity, sparking a debate about free speech in the community. The school district ultimately decided to remove Caudill from his primary role and hand over construction supervision to him during renovations. The following year, Caudilla was replaced by Bill Visbrook. Wiesbruck was hired in 1996 and previously served as Dean of Students and Deputy Director of Operations.
Mom
One of the most striking exhibits of the school is the Egyptian mummy. Although not stated or confirmed, Naperville Central may be the only high school in America to have such an artifact. Known as “Little Cleo,” it is kept in a display case on the second floor of the school.
The mummy was donated to the school in the 1940s by a local doctor who bought it from a gift shop. The mummy was wrapped and forgotten in the attic of the school until it was accidentally discovered by a teacher in 1975 and was restored in the 1990s at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago.
In 2002, National Geographic visited the school and featured the school’s mummy in episode The Mummy Roadshow television series. The mummy dates from around 55 BC.
Demographics
In 2020, 67.0% of students identify as white, 16.6% of students identify as Asian, 8.5% of students identify as Hispanic, 3.9% of students identify as black and 4. 0% of students identify as a different race.
Academicians
Seal of Naperville Central High School
In 2008, the average cumulative ACT score at Naperville Central was 24.9 and 96.6% of high school graduates. Naperville Central has not made adequate Annual Progress (AYP) on the Prairie Achievement Exam, which, along with ACT, is an assessment tool used in Illinois to implement the federal No Child Left Behind Act. One subset of students fell short of expectations in mathematics. In 2010, the Naperville Central junior class had a record 14 ACT excellent results.
In 2009, Naperville Central was ranked 1353 in Newsweek Magazine’s annual ranking list of their 1500 best US public high schools (based on AP test scores and graduation class size). In 2008, the school was ranked 1015th.
