2023 Lacrosse Recruits Begin the Process, A Coach’s Reflection

According to the voluminous NCAA rulebook (257 pages for DIII and 464 pages for DI), Sept. 1 is the first opportunity to contact juniors in high school, as the country’s 2023 lacrosse recruits found out last week. Prior to that, there can be no correspondence between a DI head coach and a PSA – that’s the lingo the NCAA uses to describe you, a prospective student-athlete.

Because DIII schools do not offer athletic scholarships, there is no such restriction on us. We can talk with you any time, except during an event. Now the rules are that we need to wait until after any contests, i.e. we are not going to chat you up during halftime of your high school game. This is the reason we may seem aloof when you see us walking around at a summer tournament. We are supposed to wait until the end of the day’s play to connect with you.

With the day now behind us, I want to reflect back on what Sept. 1 means and how it has changed the way college lacrosse recruiting works.

2023 Lacrosse Recruits Begin to Sign: A Coach’s Reflection

These rules and guidelines are usually edited and revised a little bit each year. For example, the rule about Sept. 1 of your junior year for DI was put in place a few years ago. Prior to that, eighth graders were making verbal commitments to DI programs.

Can you imagine? There is quite a bit of a physical and emotional development that happens between middle school and college. I am assuming only eighth graders with mustaches were the ones getting offers that early. Probably not too many late-bloomers getting athletic scholarship offers in middle school, or maybe even high school.

If the COVID disruption taught us anything, it is that many players do not look that smooth while they are growing, and that seniors in high school usually look pretty good compared to younger dudes.

With the current rules, a high school sophomore can be balling out at a showcase or tournament in the summer, and there may be DI coaches on the sidelines. The player sees the coach there, and then has to wait until Sept. 1 to find out if they were noticed (and impressive) or not.

Now that Sept. 1 has come and gone, the 2023 lacrosse recruits don’t have to live with that unknown.

This puts the player in a different state of mind. Add to that the rumors of this school or coach being interested, parents and fans fueling the rumors, and club coaches who can actually talk to the DI coaches about players … and you have a really intense scenario for a PSA.

So, there is a lot of pressure on a kid (aka PSAs), and right now it’s time for the 2023 lacrosse recruits to feel it. I have known kids who had more than a dozen coaches contact them at midnight on Sept. 1 – yes, midnight on a school night when most kids get up at 6:30 a.m. or so to get their school day going.

This is crazy, because we know that sleep and hydration are really important for athletes to perform at their peak. This is why I chose to text (not call) the handful of recruits I connected with this week. I did wait up to midnight to do it (way past my bedtime), so we would be in the mix with any other correspondence these very special PSAs received.

As I am writing this, my phone is blowing up with all our family members congratulating my niece for committing to a DI school for lacrosse. She is starting her senior year in high school and has worked very hard to accomplish this. She kept playing, training, studying, and working for this opportunity even when she didn’t get as much correspondence as she would have liked last year at this time.

Whether you got some correspondence this week or not, your college search belongs to you. Make the very most of it, keep playing, and keep having fun.

Let’s see how the Class of 2023 lacrosse recruits gets on now than their excitement has begun.

Boston College lacrosse 2022 recruiting class ranked #2 nationally

After Boston College broke through on Sunday to win its first NCAA women’s lacrosse championship, the outlook looks bright for BC to remain in contention for additional hardware moving forward.

While we will have to wait and learn in the coming weeks who of BC’s eligible seniors will return for their additional year of eligibility – with Charlotte North in particular being the most prominent – BC will bring a top-tier recruiting class in next season to bolster the team.

InsideLacrosse.com ranks BC’s class #2 in the nation, after perennial power Maryland.

BC currently has four players committed for next season, including two InsideLacrosse-rated five star recruits, and a 4.5 star recruit.

Midfielder Mallory Hasselbeck – yes, another member of the Hasselbeck family – is rated as the #1 player in the nation in her graduating class, and is committed to attend BC next year. This past year would have been her senior season at the Rivers School, but she missed the season recovering from injuries including an ACL tear. That said, her status as the top-ranked recruit should put her in the mix to contribute next year.

The #4-ranked recruit in the country is also coming to BC – another five-star rated midfielder, Summer Agostino. She attends Ward Melville Senior High School in New York. Agostino played in the Under Armour senior class game in 2021 and is captain of her high school team.

The 4.5-star recruit for next year is McKenna Davis, an attacker ranked the #24 recruit in the nation. Davis is another New York kid, from Pittsford, NY.

BC also has a commitment from midfielder Elizabeth Kirk out of Thayer Academy.

BC and Maryland are the only two schools with two players in InsideLacrosse’s top 5 coming in next year.

Notre Dame (#6) and Duke (#7) are the other two ACC teams in InsideLacrosse’s top 10.

Meet Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse’s 2021 Class

Syracuse basketball was not the only Orange program that had recruits sign during the early period. The men’s lacrosse team had 12 players ink with Syracuse.

Carter Rice – Midfielder: Boston College High School (Mass.)

Scouting Report via Inside Lacrosse: Likely in the 1% nationally in terms of athleticism on the lacrosse field, Rice was originally a member of the Class of 2020, so he’s been an intriguing prospect we’ve watched for quite some time. This summer, it was enjoyable witnessing him become more comfortable with his lacrosse skills, as he developed a stronger IQ in addition to confidence as a shooter and initiator, which created a noticeable step up in consistency. One thing that ‘Cuse fans should watch will be Rice’s football prowess as a WR/DB recruit: he got an offer from Dartmouth in July, and more interest should be expected. Set to build off a 41-point total a year ago, he’s a burner who can run for days and is a lefty who doesn’t hesitate to beat his man with his right. The BC High junior could become a d-middie in college, but that isn’t a lock considering the growth he’s shown offensively.

Blake Borges – Midfielder: Brunswick School (Conn.)

Scouting Report via Inside Lacrosse: Borges certainly looks the part of an ACC-bound recruit, standing 6’1 and 190 pounds with a considerable amount of athleticism. On top of that, he has the motor and physicality that recruiters go crazy for, tossing in a big hit from time to time while standing out with his two-way play. While there’s plenty to like, he could refine his offensive game, though it’s been rather effective thus far. Borges was a regular two-year playmaker for Yorktown (N.Y.) — a longtime ‘Cuse pipeline — but has transferred to Connecticut power Brunswick School and will only add to what’s always a highly talented midfield group.

Matteo Corsi – Attack: IMG Academy (Fla.)

Scouting Report via Inside Lacrosse: Corsi pledged to Lehigh last fall before contributing to Hill Academy’s second team, subsequently transferring to IMG and re-classing as a 2021 for Syracuse. Hailing from Michigan, he has a ton of confidence and creativity as an initiator both out of the attack and midfield. That being said, he’ll need to refine his decision-making, learning when to make the eye-popping play and when to make the simple play. There’s plenty of skill there, so it isn’t a tremendous concern as long as he continues to polish his game. Either way, doing so will allow Corsi to have the potential to be an everyday contributor in the Carrier Dome – an extra year of high school should be beneficial.

Kyle Rolley – Goalie: Episcopal School of Dallas (Tex.)

Scouting Report via Connect Lax: Strong Lax IQ, coach-able, strong communicator and leader, hard worker, mentally tough athletic player with quick hands and proven track record of success.

Jack Fine – Face Off: Avon Old Farms School

Scouting Report via Inside Lacrosse: Re-classing after coming from Roslyn (N.Y.), Fine’s potential has increased now that he’s at Avon Old Farms (Conn. ) and the New England West, a league that has always been chock-full of top prospects at the face-off X. He has the hand speed and tenacity to help an ACC team, but the increased reps against stellar competition could be huge for his development and confidence. The 2021 group is awfully even at the position, so he’ll have the ability to improve his standing.

Dominic Rottura – Long Stick Midfielder: Salesianum School (Del.)

Scouting Report from Salesianum head coach Bob Healy via USClubLax: Relentless with a great motor -Outstanding between the lines -Dangerous in transition with very good speed -Great stick a ground ball machine all over the field -Very tough strong and physical can play close defense -Coachable and athletic.

Barrett White – Midfielder: Episcopal High School (Va.)

Scouting Report via Inside Lacrosse: One of those “first off the bus” players who immediately jumps out as someone who’s going to give opposing teams problems, he’s a good primary dodger who can consistently draw a slide, run through it, feed through it, shoot around it or roll back. Has grown into his frame in the last year; no longer comes across as lanky.

Aidan Kelly – Midfielder: Conestoga High School (Penn.)

Accolades via Lax Records: Aidan Kelly earned all-star honors at the 2018 and 2019 Philly Showcase honors last season and was a 2018 Under Armour All-America honors when he was chosen to the Philly Command team. He also earned a spot on the all-star team at the 2017 Baltimore Summer Showcase

Nathan LeVine – Midfielder: Windham High School (N.H.)

Scouting Report via Inside Lacrosse: He’s definitely a shortstick d-middie — and good one. He has the frame and size to be a physical presence in time. Comfortable with the ball in his stick in the clearing game and makes good decisions. He’s really comfortable on the defensive end and, if he continues to work on his craft and develop his athleticism, college coaches will have him on scouting reports early in his career.

Finn Kelly – Attack: Archbishop Spalding High School (Md. )

Scouting Report via our Samantha Croston: Kelly, who plays at Archbishop Spalding High School, distinguishes himself from other players through his ability to shoot accurately while on the run. His lacrosse IQ is high, and his ability to change direction quickly will be advantageous to the Syracuse offensive end.

Kyle Gonsiorek – Long Stick Midfielder: Salisbury School (Conn.)

Scouting Report via Inside Lacrosse: Transferred from St. Joe’s in Buffalo to Salisbury in Connecticut. Gonsiorek is a hockey standout who is tremendous off the ground.

Kyle McCarthy – Defenseman: Pingree School (Mass.)

Scouting Report via Salem News: A junior at Pingree, McCarthy has helped the Highlanders win a pair of McCoy Cup championships as New England Small School prep champions. He repeated his freshman year at the South Hamilton private school after starring at his hometown Peabody High School as a freshman. The 5-foot-11, 182-pounder, who will turn 18 years old next week, can play either close defender or long stick middie. Known for his excellent foot speed, physical play and strong ground ball skills, his ability as a lockdown 1-on-1 defenseman has drawn him raves.

Andy Demopoulos, Darien (Conn.), G, Sr.

A starter as a sophomore, Demopoulos was highly influential in Darien’s latest state championship run. Originally committed to Johns Hopkins, the senior made the switch to Brown when Dave Pietramala was let go last April and is the latest in a long line of spectacular Blue Wave goalies.

Andrew McAdorey, St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), M, Sr.

The cerebral midfielder follows Brennan O’Neill as a “Best in Class” at St. Anthony’s, and like the bruising attackman, McAdorey will play for John Danowski at Duke. The senior, who had 23 goals and 21 assists as a freshman, is a force on both ends of the field and always plays at 100 miles per hour.

Aidan Mulholland, Manhasset (N.Y.), M, Sr.

A dynamic midfielder, this Michigan-bound senior can score with both hands and dodge from seemingly anywhere. He opened eyes at the World Series of Youth Lacrosse and continued to showcase his next-level skills at Manhasset, where he had 36 goals and 18 assists as a sophomore.

Joey Spallina, Mt. Sinai (N.Y.), A, Jr.

Once a child prodigy, Spallina is the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2022 and a newly minted Syracuse commit. Son of Stony Brook women’s coach Joe Spallina, the junior had 66 goals and 65 assists as a freshman at Mt. Sinai.

The cerebral midfielder follows Brennan O’Neill as a “Best in Class” at St. Anthony’s, and like the bruising attackman, Andrew McAdorey will play for John Danowski at Duke.

Hunter is one of the young talents to keep an eye on in the Mid-Atlantic region as a 6-foot-4 right-hander who has made the rounds on the national stage through club lacrosse.

Remington Reynolds, Gilman (Md. ), LSM, Sr.

The Rutgers-bound lefty midfielder brings a defensive motor but also poses an offensive threat in transition. He’s aggressive but controlled and has strong stick skills.

Luke Rhoa, St. John’s College High School (D.C.), M, Jr.

A three-star prospect according to Inside Lacrosse, Rhoa has a good combination of speed, physicality and high lacrosse IQ. He’s committed to Syracuse.

Brian Ruppel, Catonsville (Md.), G, Jr.

The Maryland commit is considered among the top goalies in the region and will be one to watch this season.
