How can indoor lacrosse drills improve your skills. What are the most effective drills for enhancing stick handling, shooting, and footwork. Which indoor exercises maximize limited space and time.
Essential Indoor Lacrosse Drills for Skill Development
Indoor lacrosse drills are crucial for players looking to enhance their skills, especially during off-season or when outdoor practice isn’t feasible. These drills focus on fundamental techniques that form the backbone of a player’s abilities on the field.
Wall Ball Routines: The Foundation of Stick Skills
Wall ball is arguably the most effective drill for improving stick skills. Why is wall ball so beneficial. It allows players to practice catching, throwing, and cradling in rapid succession, developing muscle memory and hand-eye coordination. A basic wall ball routine might include:
- 30 repetitions right-handed
- 30 repetitions left-handed
- 30 repetitions alternating hands
- 30 repetitions quick stick (minimal cradling)
To maximize the benefits of wall ball, focus on proper form and gradually increase speed and complexity as skills improve. Can wall ball translate to game situations. Absolutely. The quick hands and precise movements developed through wall ball directly apply to passing and catching under pressure during matches.
Enhancing Shooting Accuracy and Power Indoors
Developing a powerful and accurate shot is essential for any lacrosse player. Indoor drills can significantly improve shooting skills, even with limited space.
Target Practice: Precision Shooting Drills
How can players improve shooting accuracy indoors. Target practice is an excellent method. Set up targets in the corners of a goal or use hanging objects as precision targets. Focus on hitting these targets from various angles and distances. This drill enhances:
- Shot placement
- Shooting technique
- Mental focus
For added challenge, incorporate movement before shooting or practice shooting on the run. This simulates game-like situations and improves overall shooting proficiency.
Power Shot Development
While accuracy is crucial, power shouldn’t be neglected. How can players increase shot velocity indoors. One effective method is focusing on proper technique and follow-through. Practice the following:
- Proper grip and hand positioning
- Full body rotation
- Snapping the wrists on release
- Following through towards the target
Remember, power comes from proper technique, not just strength. Consistent practice of these elements will naturally increase shot speed over time.
Footwork and Agility Drills for Indoor Practice
Lacrosse demands quick feet and agility. Indoor drills can significantly improve a player’s footwork and overall mobility on the field.
Ladder Drills: Enhancing Quick Feet
Agility ladders are versatile tools for improving footwork. What makes ladder drills effective for lacrosse. They enhance:
- Foot speed
- Coordination
- Balance
- Change of direction skills
Try variations like lateral shuffles, in-and-outs, and high knees through the ladder. These movements mimic the quick footwork needed during gameplay, improving overall agility and reaction time.
Cone Drills: Improving Change of Direction
Cone drills are excellent for developing the ability to change direction quickly – a crucial skill in lacrosse. Set up cones in various patterns and practice:
- Quick cuts and direction changes
- Accelerating and decelerating
- Maintaining balance while changing speeds
How do these drills translate to game performance. They enhance a player’s ability to dodge defenders, create space for shots, and react quickly to on-field situations.
Stick Handling and Ball Control Exercises
Mastering stick handling and ball control is fundamental to excelling in lacrosse. Indoor drills provide ample opportunity to refine these critical skills.
One-Handed Cradling Drills
Why is one-handed cradling important. It improves overall stick control and prepares players for game situations where they need to protect the ball with their body. Practice one-handed cradling with both the dominant and non-dominant hand:
- Stationary cradling
- Walking while cradling
- Jogging while cradling
- Cradling with sudden direction changes
Focus on maintaining a smooth, controlled cradle without excessive movement. This drill enhances ball security and prepares players for physical defensive pressure.
Around-the-World Drill
The around-the-world drill improves overall stick control and hand-eye coordination. How is this drill performed. Players move the stick around their body, passing the ball from the front to the back without dropping it. Practice both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. This drill develops:
- Soft hands
- Ball awareness
- Stick positioning
As skills improve, increase speed and add variations like changing directions mid-drill or incorporating body fakes.
Defensive Positioning and Footwork Drills
Effective defense is crucial in lacrosse, and many defensive skills can be honed through indoor drills.
Mirror Drills: Improving Defensive Slides
Mirror drills enhance a defender’s ability to stay with an attacker. How does this drill work. Players pair up, with one acting as the attacker and the other as the defender. The attacker makes various moves, and the defender must mirror these movements, maintaining proper defensive positioning. This drill improves:
- Lateral quickness
- Anticipation
- Body positioning
For added challenge, incorporate stick checks into the drill, focusing on timing and precision.
Breakdown Position Practice
The defensive breakdown position is fundamental to effective defense. Why is this position important. It allows defenders to react quickly to offensive movements. Practice maintaining the breakdown position:
- Feet shoulder-width apart
- Knees bent
- Weight on the balls of the feet
- Stick positioned to defend passes and shots
Incorporate quick starts and stops from this position to simulate reacting to offensive players’ movements.
Goalie-Specific Indoor Training Techniques
Goalies require specialized training to excel in their unique role. Indoor drills can significantly enhance a goalie’s reflexes, positioning, and overall performance.
Tennis Ball Reaction Drills
Tennis ball drills are excellent for improving hand-eye coordination and reaction time. How are these drills performed. A partner or coach throws tennis balls at varying speeds and angles, and the goalie must catch them with their hand (not the stick). This drill enhances:
- Quick hands
- Visual tracking
- Reaction speed
As skills improve, increase the speed and unpredictability of the throws. This drill translates directly to making quick stick and body saves during games.
Footwork and Positioning Drills
Proper footwork and positioning are crucial for goalies. What drills can improve these aspects. Try the following:
- Step-and-slide drills to cover different areas of the goal
- Quick shuffle steps to adjust positioning
- Explosive movements to simulate reacting to shots
Focus on maintaining a balanced, athletic stance throughout these drills. Good positioning allows goalies to make saves more easily and efficiently.
Team-Based Indoor Drills for Improved Coordination
While individual skills are crucial, team-based drills are essential for developing coordination and understanding between players.
Small-Space Passing Drills
Passing drills in confined spaces improve precision and decision-making. How can these be structured indoors. Try the following:
- 3v2 keep-away in a small area
- Rapid-fire passing in triangles or squares
- Behind-the-back and one-handed passing practice
These drills enhance communication, spatial awareness, and the ability to make quick, accurate passes under pressure.
Indoor Transition Drills
Transition play is a critical aspect of lacrosse. How can this be practiced indoors. Set up a small-sided game (3v3 or 4v4) with emphasis on quick transitions from defense to offense. This drill improves:
- Field awareness
- Communication
- Conditioning
- Decision-making under pressure
Encourage players to make quick, smart decisions and maintain proper spacing even in limited indoor spaces.
By incorporating these diverse indoor lacrosse drills into regular practice routines, players can significantly enhance their individual skills and team coordination. Remember, consistent practice and focus on proper technique are key to improvement. As players progress, drills can be modified to increase difficulty and simulate game-like situations more closely. The versatility of these indoor drills makes them valuable for players of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced athletes.

NLL Philadelphia Wings quarterback and Chrome LC PLL defender John Ranaghan has given his take on box lacrosse at the junior level.
“Box lacrosse has greatly improved my lacrosse skills at a professional level. The game is both fast and athletic, requiring you to be highly skilled with stick handling and creative. Most of the best players in the world now have indoor experience, and I I strongly recommend that all young players get to know box lacrosse as soon as possible.”
One of the best Americans to play in the NLL, Rochester Knighthawks legend and current head coach of the PLL “Chrome” LC team, Tim Sudan, suggested that box lacrosse is the best place for beginner players to start their journey.
“Box lacrosse is an important training component for American lacrosse players. Fitness provides a skill set that makes players much better at handling defensive pressure. Players also learn how to pass and catch balls in tight spaces. Defensive players learn shrink space, move and exert physical force towards your opponents.
I believe that all young players should start in box lacrosse to develop their skills and then move on to the fields. Over the past few years, the NLL has noticed and signed a lot of American players, and the main reason is the increase in the amount of training and opportunities to play box lacrosse in their youth. and reached the semi-finals of the Premier Lacrosse League, where he will wait for the winner of the pair “Archers” LC – “Redwoods” LC.0003
“Chrome” LC is a professional men’s field lacrosse team playing in the Premier Lacrosse League. “Chrome” LC was founded in 2019 and is one of the six founding members of the PLL.
At the beginning of their journey, “Chrome” LC became the weakest team in the PLL 2019. They won only out of 10, and also lost both matches of the first and second rounds of the playoffs.
