What are the different types of lacrosse arm protection. How to choose the right arm protection for your position. What factors should be considered when sizing lacrosse arm guards. How do arm guards differ from arm pads and elbow caps.
Understanding the Types of Lacrosse Arm Protection
Lacrosse is a high-contact sport that requires proper protective gear to ensure player safety. One crucial piece of equipment is arm protection. There are three main types of lacrosse arm protection: arm guards, arm pads, and elbow pads/caps. Each type serves a specific purpose and is designed for different positions on the field.
Arm Guards: Maximum Protection for Attackmen
Arm guards offer the highest level of protection among lacrosse arm gear. They typically feature a hard plastic shell over padding, covering the area from mid-bicep to mid-forearm. Who are arm guards best suited for? Primarily attackmen, who face frequent checks from defensive long poles.
- Construction: Protective plastic shell over padding
- Coverage: Mid-bicep to mid-forearm
- Best for: Attackmen and youth players
- Characteristics: Bulkier but offer maximum protection
Are arm guards recommended for all players? For youth players transitioning from starter sets, arm guards are strongly advised to provide comprehensive protection as they learn the game.
Arm Pads: Balanced Protection for Midfielders
Arm pads strike a balance between protection and mobility. They are typically constructed of foam padding and cover the area from the top of the forearm to mid-bicep. Which players benefit most from arm pads? Midfielders often prefer arm pads for their lighter weight and increased range of motion.
- Construction: Primarily foam padding
- Coverage: Top of forearm to mid-bicep
- Best for: Midfielders
- Characteristics: Lightweight, offer moderate protection
Why do midfielders prefer arm pads? The extra freedom of movement allows for better shooting on the run and dodging from the top of the field.
Elbow Pads/Caps: Minimal Protection for Defensemen
Elbow pads or caps provide the least amount of protection but offer maximum mobility. They usually consist of a thin plastic cap or soft pad covering 6-8 inches around the elbow. Who typically wears elbow caps? Defensive players and some elite-level midfielders opt for this minimal protection.
- Construction: Thin plastic cap or soft pad
- Coverage: 6-8 inches around the elbow
- Best for: Experienced defensemen and some elite midfielders
- Characteristics: Minimal constriction, ultimate mobility
When should players consider using elbow caps? It’s recommended that players refrain from using elbow caps until they are experienced enough to make an informed decision about sacrificing protection for mobility.
Sizing Guide for Lacrosse Arm Protection
Proper sizing is crucial for effective arm protection in lacrosse. Ill-fitting gear can compromise safety and hinder performance. How can you determine the right size for your lacrosse arm protection?
Size | Age | Weight | Height |
---|---|---|---|
XS | 5-7 | Under 50 lbs | Under 46″ |
SM | 8-10 | 50-70 lbs | 46-54″ |
MD | 11-13 | 80-120 lbs | 54-58″ |
LG | 14+ | 130-180 lbs | 60-65″ |
XL | 16+ | 190 lbs + | 66″ + |
Is this sizing chart universal for all brands? It’s important to note that these sizes are approximate, and different manufacturers may have slight variations. Always refer to the specific manufacturer’s guidelines for the most accurate sizing information.
Choosing the Right Arm Protection for Your Position
Selecting the appropriate arm protection is crucial for maximizing both safety and performance in lacrosse. The choice largely depends on your position on the field and your level of play. How does arm protection differ for various positions?
Attackmen: Prioritizing Full Protection
Attackmen face the most intense defensive pressure and are therefore advised to use arm guards. Why is full protection essential for attackmen? The frequent checks from long defensive poles necessitate robust arm protection to prevent injuries and maintain confidence during offensive plays.
Midfielders: Balancing Protection and Mobility
Midfielders often opt for arm pads, which offer a compromise between protection and freedom of movement. What makes arm pads suitable for midfielders? The lighter weight and increased flexibility allow for better shooting on the run and improved maneuverability during transitions between offense and defense.
Defensemen: Maximizing Mobility
Defensemen typically choose elbow caps or minimal arm protection to optimize their range of motion. Why do defensemen prefer minimal arm protection? The ability to freely wield their long poles and execute checks without restriction is crucial for effective defensive play.
The Importance of Proper Fit in Lacrosse Arm Protection
Ensuring that your lacrosse arm protection fits correctly is vital for both safety and performance. Ill-fitting gear can leave areas exposed to potential injury or hinder your ability to play effectively. How can you tell if your arm protection fits properly?
- Arm guards should cover from the top of the triceps to the mid-forearm
- Arm pads should stay in place and not slide down the bicep during play
- Elbow caps should securely cover the elbow joint without restricting movement
What are the risks of wearing improperly sized arm protection? Too large, and the protection may shift during play, leaving vulnerable areas exposed. Too small, and it may restrict blood flow or limit your range of motion, potentially affecting your performance.
Evolution of Lacrosse Arm Protection Technology
The technology behind lacrosse arm protection has evolved significantly over the years, offering players enhanced safety without sacrificing mobility. How have advancements in materials and design improved lacrosse arm protection?
Lightweight Materials
Modern arm guards and pads utilize lightweight, high-impact resistant materials that offer superior protection without adding unnecessary bulk. What are some of these innovative materials? Advanced foams, carbon fiber, and specialized plastics are among the materials used to create protective gear that is both durable and lightweight.
Ergonomic Design
Contemporary arm protection is designed with player movement in mind. How does ergonomic design benefit players? Articulated joints and flexible segments allow for a full range of motion while maintaining protective coverage, enhancing both comfort and performance.
Moisture Management
Many current arm protection products incorporate moisture-wicking fabrics and ventilation systems. Why is moisture management important in lacrosse gear? Effective moisture control helps keep players cool and comfortable during intense gameplay, potentially improving endurance and focus.
Maintenance and Care of Lacrosse Arm Protection
Proper care and maintenance of your lacrosse arm protection can significantly extend its lifespan and ensure it continues to provide optimal protection. What are some key tips for maintaining lacrosse arm guards, pads, and caps?
- Clean regularly with mild soap and water
- Allow gear to air dry completely after each use
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Inspect for damage or wear regularly and replace as needed
- Follow manufacturer’s specific care instructions
How often should you replace your lacrosse arm protection? While this can vary based on usage and care, most high-quality arm protection should last 1-2 seasons with proper maintenance. However, if you notice any significant wear, cracks, or compromised padding, it’s time to replace your gear immediately.
The Role of Arm Protection in Injury Prevention
Arm protection plays a crucial role in preventing injuries in lacrosse, a sport known for its physical nature and high-speed projectiles. How does proper arm protection contribute to player safety?
Impact Absorption
Quality arm guards and pads are designed to absorb and disperse the force of impacts, whether from checks, collisions, or errant balls. What types of injuries can proper arm protection prevent? Bruises, contusions, and even fractures can be mitigated with the right protective gear.
Confidence in Play
Beyond physical protection, arm guards and pads provide players with psychological comfort. How does this affect gameplay? Players who feel well-protected are often more confident in their movements and decision-making on the field, potentially leading to improved performance.
Regulation Compliance
Many leagues and levels of play have specific requirements for arm protection. Why is adhering to these regulations important? Compliance ensures a baseline of safety for all players and helps create a fair playing field.
While arm protection is crucial, it’s important to remember that no gear can prevent all injuries. Proper technique, fair play, and adherence to rules are equally important in maintaining player safety.
Choosing The Right Lacrosse Arm Protection and Sizing Guide Lacrosse Video
There are many different variations of lacrosse arm protection. The options include: arm guards, arm pads and elbow pads/caps. Although the differences seem subtle, choosing the right type of lacrosse arm protection can take your game to the next level. From a defender’s complete mobility to an attackman’s comfort and protection, being confident in your protection cannot be undervalued. In this video, Brandon Butler, Product Manager, Lax.com will describe the differences between each type of pad.
Constructed with protection in mind. Typically these types of guards offer padding underneath a protective plastic shell, which protects most of the arm and can deflect heavier blows. Arm guards tend to be a bit bulkier, but most manufacturers design them to offer a full range of motion and flexibility, but they do have a bit of a bulk. Attack-men can feel confident as they dodge against the defense, and find the glory of scoring a goal. Arm guards are primarily worn by offensive attackman. They offer the most protection and generally offer coverage from mid-bicep to mid forearm. Arm guards offer the most protection possible for offensive players that are taking checks from long stick defensive poles. Your arm guards should cover the top of the triceps all the way down to your forearm. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND ARM GUARDS FOR ALL YOUTH PLAYERS AS SOON AS THEY GRADUATE OUT OF THEIR STARTER SETS. This will offer the most protection as the players learn the game, and younger players can start to specialize their padding towards the end of middle school.
Constructed primarily of foam padding. Generally these pads cover the top of forearm to mid bicep. Usually very light weight, but will still take the brunt of any checks thrown in your direction. These pads are worn by both mid-fielders and defense men. Arm pads are primarily worn by middies who want a bit more mobility and less protection. The biggest reason that middies covet the extra freedom is the ability to shoot on the run as they dodge from up top. Arm pads are usually a bit softer, have a smaller elbow cap, or no cap at all, depending on the model. The key with arm pads is to make sure they are sized properly so that they do not slide down off your bicep all the time. Injury can occur if you are exposed while playing.
Constructed with minimum constriction and the most mobility. Lacrosse elbow caps are primarily designed for defensive players, although some elite-level middies do wear them as well. These usually consist of a thin plastic cap that covers the elbow bone or a simple soft pad that covers about 6-8 inches around the crux of the arm. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT PLAYERS REFRAIN FROM WEARING THESE PADS UNTIL THEY ARE OLD ENOUGH TO MAKE THE DECISION TO SACRIFICE PROTECTION FOR ULTIMATE MOBILITY. You will see many elite level collegiate and high school defensemen in elbow caps.
How To Size Lacrosse Arm Pads?

The players elbow should fit comfortable into the center of the elbow pad cup.
Also, a good elbow pads protect the arm from the bicep extension of the shoulder pads to the cuff of the gloves, leaving no part of the arm exposed. Players should look for a good range of motion in elbow pads. The elbow should fit comfortably in the center of the cup and should not twist or slide on the arm. Also, look for a pad that provides forearm protection. The end of the elbow pad should meet the cuff of the glove. Elbow pad sizing is based on height.

How to Size a Hockey Elbow Pad
Finding your hockey elbow pad size is a breeze. Simply grab a measuring tape, extend your arm straight out so that it is parallel with the floor and then measure the distance between the mid-forearm and the middle part of the bicep. Use this measurement along with your height on our hockey elbow pad sizing chart below.
If you are in between two sizes, you can choose to go with the smaller size for a better range of motion and more snug fit. Going larger will provide you with a little more coverage in protection and more volume in the fit.
Once you have the elbow pad on your arm, there are a couple of areas to check in order to know if the elbow pad fits correctly or incorrectly.
The elbow pad connects flush with the cuff of your hockey glove and bicep guard of your shoulder pads. There are no overlapping and no significant gaps between the two. Each strap can comfortably Velcro secure and the arm stays locked into place.
If they are too big, the elbow pad will overlap with the glove and shoulder pad’s bicep guard. Overlapping will inhibit your range of motion and limit your performance when shooting and stick handling. The protection may also twist or move around which won’t properly protect the elbow.
If they are too small, gaps between the glove and shoulder pads increase the risk of injury.
The information below is a general sizing guideline and DOES NOT guarantee fit. The chart is not specific to any item or brand so if a product does have specific sizing guidelines on the product page, DO NOT reference the general sizing guidelines below.

The graph shows that all states are more or less actively increasing their spending on science. In Russia, they have more than doubled in 10 years, other countries show similar dynamics. At the same time, the flow of publications from Russia is not growing, and this makes us sharply different from the rest.
Now, having estimated the overall publication efficiency of Russian science, let us consider at what cost we achieve such indicators. The graph shows the total spending on science in Russia and four countries for which OECD statistics are available:
Comparison with the BRIC rival countries is even more sad.In the PRC, all for the same 1997-2001 \ 2003-2007. the number of citations per job increased by 87%, in Brazil by 42%, in India by 69%.
The second scientific macroparameter of interest to us fixes not so much the quantity as the quality of the articles. These are the already mentioned citations, which can be used to track the demand for domestic publications. Thomson data indicate a steady increase in links to Russian articles from 213,577 in 1997-2001. up to 274,312 in 2003-2007. (+ 28%). Is this a sign of improving the quality of our science? Perhaps. But let’s see how the number of citations of those countries changed during the same time, the number of publications from which did not grow much. Thus, the number of references to English works increased by 41%, American by 33%, Belgian by 68%, Ukrainian by 54%, Spanish by 88%. As you can see, we have nothing to brag about even against the background of Ukraine. Over the past 10 years, the world has simply become more cited in each scientific article, more references to other works are mentioned than it was before. An understandable and well-known process, the more a certain scientific field develops, the more works it is necessary to study and cite its representatives.
Russia published only 25 thousand articles on the same database in 2007. The slow decline in absolute numbers has continued since 1997, the first for which statistics are available.
According to the alternative Scopus base Essential Science Indicators (Thomson), the PRC in the period from 1997 to August 31, 2007 ranked 6th in the world, Russia 9th. In 2007, China (95.5 thousand materials) came in 4th place in the world in terms of the number of publications indexed by Thomson Scientific after the USA, England (excluding Scotland and Wales, 98.5) and Germany (97.5), overtaking Japan (86.2), and will take second place in 2008.
Now let’s look at Russia’s indicators against the background of the BRIC countries, replacing mainland China with island China:
As we can see, the rapid growth of PA China began in 2003-2004, against its background, the gradual increase in the flow of publications of the three countries traditionally sharing the second place in the world seems insignificant.
Before analyzing the situation in Russia, let us note that only China has 1 article less citations than Russia. However, the reason for this in the PRC is different than in the Russian Federation – it is not stagnation, but unprecedented scientific growth. Unfortunately, now it is no longer possible to compare our scientific results on the same graph, so we have selected more adequate comparisons for Russia and China.
** H-index (Hirsch index) h reflects the number of publications in a given country, each of which is cited at least h times.
* 2005 is chosen instead of 2006 for clarity, for 2006 there are not many citations in the SciMago database.
The global flow of publications is growing at a rate of 3% (Thomson) or 7-9% (Scopus) per year, while the components of this growth have undergone significant changes over the past 15 years. The countries of Asia have moved forward, with the PRC showing a particularly sharp leap. The share of the United States, accordingly, decreased over 1991-2003. from 34% to 31% (Thomson), but in terms of the number of publications, the United States still leads by a huge margin. This is what the top twenty for 2006 looks like according to the Spanish research group SciMago using Scopus data:
citations significant outside of it.That is, significant in the context of the development of world science. Thus, although the resulting picture of the PA does not reflect the completeness of the specifically Russian scientific and publication realities, it is good for objective international comparisons. The development of Russian Science Citation Index (s) is undoubtedly an important area, but in assessing the contribution to the development of world science, one should use world-class instruments. The only exception is the case of exclusively Russian-language humanitarian and social disciplines, which we will have to leave out of brackets.
Secondly, it is easily considered, especially in recent years, when the monopoly of the main supplier of data for the scientific division of the American corporation Thomson was violated by the European publishing giant Elsevier and its Scopus database. Note that different counting systems index different scientific publications, and therefore sometimes give different data (especially for the PRC), but there are no serious discrepancies in figures and dynamics in Russia.
This criterion was not chosen by chance. First, it is the most objective publications are the most widespread and generally accepted product of scientific work, it is in them that the results of the search activities of scientists are reflected and disseminated in the world. In addition, it allows comparisons of civilian fields of science, automatically excluding military and specialty research that is not published in open sources.
At the same time, while in China, South Korea, India, Singapore, Brazil, Taiwan and a number of other countries, the macroeconomic recovery is accompanied by the development of scientific and technological innovation systems, an increase in the quantity and quality of scientific results that form the basis of a significant part of the “new economy” , then Russia seems to be the only major state that does not demonstrate such dependence. In other words, it is only in the Russian Federation that the growth of spending on science does not lead to an increase in its productivity. This article is devoted to explaining this fact, and the indicator of the dynamics of publication activity (PA) is used as an assessment of the degree of development of Russian science.
In today’s world, global changes are taking place, the focus of economic and political activity is shifting from Europe and the United States to Asia and a number of other regions. Russia is showing good economic indicators that fully justify its inclusion in the club of rapidly developing countries.

As a result of the Time of Troubles, access to the Baltic Sea was completely lost. Until the beginning of the 18th century. the vast multinational Russian state remained cut off from the Baltic and Black Seas. It was possible to “cut windows” to these seas only under Peter I.A large role in this was played by the regular navy created by him in 1696.
However, the struggle of the Russian people for the solution of the historical task of wide access to the Baltic Sea ended unsuccessfully. Poland, Sweden, Denmark intervened in the matter. As a result of the Livonian War, Russia lost land in Karelia and on the coast of the Gulf of Finland.
However, the Livonian Order, Poland, Sweden and others put all sorts of obstacles to the development of our navigation in the Baltic Sea. The young Russian state had to wage a stubborn armed struggle for the right to access to the sea.It acquired the most fierce and lasting character under Ivan the Terrible. The main war of his reign was the Livonian War (1558-1583). Having seized the convenient ports of the Baltic States, Ivan the Terrible wanted to open up a wide communication with Europe. Already at the beginning of the war, the Livonian Order was defeated.
Education in the 16th century in Russia, a single centralized state, gathering around Moscow, urgently demanded the establishment of trade relations by sea with the countries of Europe, since the further economic and cultural development of Russia largely depended on this.
However, the feudal fragmentation of Kievan Rus in the XII century. and the subsequent Tatar-Mongol invasion in the XIII century. on the lands of the Russian principalities significantly undermined our shipping (including military). Russia for a long time lost access to the southern seas. But in a stubborn struggle with the Swedish, German and Danish feudal lords, the Russian people managed to defend the north-western borders of the country and maintain access to the Baltic Sea. (Memorable is the campaign of the Novgorod fleet in Sweden, where the fortress of Sigtuna (1187) was taken and destroyed, the base of the raids on Russian lands).
Developed shipping along the seas and rivers contributed to the maintenance of broad trade relations of Kievan Rus with the countries of Europe, South and East Germany, Norway, Sweden, France, England, Byzantium, Iran, etc. In the end, this had a beneficial effect on the growth of its economic and political power. Already in the XI century. Kievan Rus was one of the largest states in Europe.
As the experience of navigation was accumulated, ships were also improved: from the middle of the XII century. Along with hollowed out single-wood boats with boards from boards, they began to build deck ships with two rudders aft and bow, which had greater seaworthiness and good maneuverability, and the ships built by the Pomors were also designed for sailing in ice.
In the XI XII centuries. Novgorodians and residents of the Rostov-Suzdal land began to develop the shores of the “Cold Sea” of the White and other seas of the Arctic Ocean. They sailed to the shores of Scandinavia, Grumant (Spitsbergen), to Novaya Zemlya and further to the east.
Whole fleets sometimes went on the seas. In 907, Oleg’s sea voyage to Byzantium was attended by 2 thousand boats. The campaigns of Igor and Svyatoslav are known (using the rook fleet, which operated both along the rivers and at sea, the Kiev prince Svyatoslav defeated the parasitic Khazar-Jewish Khaganate.) other. And it was not without reason that the Black Sea was called the Russian Sea at that time.
With the formation in the IX century. In the ancient Russian state (Kievan Rus), the intensity of the hostilities of the Slav-Ross flotillas increased significantly. In addition to the Russian (Black) Sea, the Ross were active in the Khvalynsk (Caspian) and Varangian (Baltic) seas. According to the Tale of Bygone Years, the Russians knew the sea route to Constantinople (Constantinople), the capital of Byzantium, from the Varangian Sea around Europe.
The Navy of our Motherland has a long and glorious history. Its origins can be traced back to the 2nd half of the 1st millennium AD. NS. Back in the VI VII centuries. the Slavs, mainly the Antes, sailed on light one-tree boats on the Pontus Euxine (Black), Propontis (Marmara), Aegean, Ionian and Inner (Mediterranean) seas. In 623 they made a sea voyage to about. Crete, in 642 P on the coast of southern Italy.
