Malvern Prep’s Joey Bucci is Main Line Student of the Week – Mainline Media News
A senior at Malvern Prep, Joey Bucci, is Co-Founder of the school’s CSItizen Speaker Series, a program highlighting various
national/international topics with big name speakers such as Wes Moore and David Hogg. The proceeds of this program were used to help endow a scholarship program at Malvern. Last December, he was one of seven seniors who received the Advanced Credential Award at Malvern Prep. Bucci has participated in various volunteer opportunities through his mother’s nonprofit organization, Connect Thru Cancer. He also plays lacrosse for Malvern Prep.
Main Line Media News: What sparked your interest in co-founding the Malvern Prep CSItizen Speaker Series? Who in your opinion was the most memorable speaker and why?
Joey Bucci: After my classmate proposed the idea of a student-led speaker series to me and my peers, I was immediately intrigued. Since childhood, I have been inspired to serve others through the example set by my mother’s devotion to helping families struggling with cancer through her nonprofit, Connect Thru Cancer. The creation of the CSItizen Speaker Series presented the perfect opportunity to get involved within my community, create meaningful impact, and inspire others. I was super excited to have the opportunity to work within a team and develop my leadership skills, while also creating meaningful impact within my campus boundaries. It has been a privilege to host amazing speakers each semester; however, I was most impacted by our event featuring Wes Moore last April. Wes Moore’s inspirational words touched the audience and established the message that anyone can create meaningful change.
Main Line Media News: Can you tell us a little about the Advanced Credential Award at Malvern Prep? What does it mean to you to win this award?
Joey Bucci: The Advanced Credential is the highest academic achievement Malvern offers and recognizes students that combine their character strengths, skill development and their commitment to Augustinian values in a manner that results in significant and positive social impact. It was an honor to receive this award alongside my peers, which recognized the years of hard work and effort put forth by the CSItizen Speakers Series team.
Main Line Media News: You’ve participated in various volunteer opportunities for your mother’s nonprofit, Connect Thru Cancer. Can you tell us a little about some of those community service activities?
Joey Bucci: It has always been a privilege to work alongside my mother and bring joy to the many families experiencing difficult times due to cancer. Whether it was creating and editing videos to help launch virtual programs throughout the COVID-19 pandemic or filming events for social media use, I have always enjoyed working within my community to help create meaningful impact.
Main Line Media News: What sparked your interest in lacrosse? What has been your most memorable experience as a Malvern Prep lacrosse player?
Joey Bucci: Growing up, I was surrounded by the sport of lacrosse. My uncle, Scott Gabrielsen, played professional lacrosse for the Philadelphia Wings and my siblings and cousins all played lacrosse as well. I started playing lacrosse at a very young age and switched to the faceoff position my sophomore year of high school. I have enjoyed every moment of my Malvern Prep lacrosse career, but the most rewarding experience was winning the Inter-Ac Championship last spring. It was a very special moment for the whole team, especially the senior class, who had been stripped of a season the year before. The Inter-Ac championship was the culmination of months of hard work and dedication, so it was super gratifying to see the seniors go out as champions.
Main Line Media News: What is your favorite course at Malvern Prep and why?
Joey Bucci: I think my favorite course at Malvern Prep has to be Honors British Literature with Mr. Roper. I took Honors British Literature last year and it was certainly the toughest class I have taken throughout my years at Malvern. Despite the course’s difficulty, I enjoyed every second of the class. Mr. Roper brought a unique energy into every class, taught with vitality and cared so much about every one of his students. Honors British Literature improved my study habits, work ethic, and pushed me to be the best version of myself possible.
Main Line Media News: What, in your opinion, is the best aspect of being a student at Malvern Prep?
Joey Bucci: The best aspect of being a student at Malvern Prep is the brotherhood that you become a part of. From the moment you step onto Malvern Prep’s campus, you begin to understand the bond between your classmates and the connection you have with every student. This aspect of brotherhood within the community is experienced in its truest form during the MECO retreat. Throughout senior year, I have had the opportunity and pleasure to interact with many of my Malvern brothers in unique ways, allowing me to grow closer to every classmate and establish meaningful bonds. The brotherhood that is created at Malvern is present in every aspect of a student’s life, whether that be through athletic teams, clubs, extracurricular activities, service trips, or the MECO retreat.
Main Line Media News: What is your favorite book, and why? Who is your favorite author and why?
Joey Bucci: My favorite book is Make Your Bed by my favorite author, Admiral William McRaven.
