GEICO Summer Series Brings Elite High School Lacrosse to ESPN Networks

The GEICO Summer Series will once again bring elite high school lacrosse to ESPN networks with the GEICO High School Lacrosse Nationals (May 30-31) and the STX National High School Lacrosse Showcase (June 24-25).

GIECO High School Lacrosse Nationals
The fourth annual GEICO High School Lacrosse Nationals returns to Catholic University’s Carlini Field in Washington, D. C. All four participating teams are ranked in the top-10 nationally, including: No. 5 Georgetown Prep (Md.), No. 6 Taft School (Conn.), No. 9 Culver Military Academy (Ind.) and No. 10 St. John’s College High School (D.C).  The semifinals will be Sunday, May 30, at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU and ESPN3 with the championship game on Monday, May 31, at 7 p.m. on ESPNU. Games will also be available on the ESPN App via connected devices.

The GEICO High School Lacrosse Nationals allows elite high school lacrosse teams from across the country to face one another in a post-season tournament.

Warriors from Watchung Hills Regional High School ^[4] compete in the Skyland Conference, which is sponsored by the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). ^[24] A school with 1469 students in grades 10-12 was classified by the NJSIAA for the 2019-20 academic year as Group IV for most sports, which included schools with an enrollment of 1060 to 5049 students in that class. ^[25] The school has been classified by the NJSIAA as Group V football for 2018-2020. ^[26]

WHRHS Interscholastic Sports Teams include baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, ice hockey, men’s and women’s high-speed basketball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s athletics, men’s and women’s bowling, men’s and women’s fencing, swimming, wrestling, women’s and men’s volleyball, marching band, women’s softball, women’s gymnastics and women’s cheerleading. ^[4]

The men’s cross country team won the 1974 Group IV State Championship. ^[27] This was the first WHRHS team to win a state championship.

Women’s tennis team won the Group IV State Championship in 1976 and 1978 (vs. Ridgewood High School both years), 1981 (vs. Cherry Hill East High School) and won the Group III State Championship in 1982 (vs. Millburn High School), 1983, 1985 (Mainland Regional High School), 2000 (vs.Tenafli High School) and 2001 (vs. Northern Highlands Regional High School). The team won the Tournament of Champions in 1981 (vs. Ramson Fair Haven Regional High School), 1982 and 1983. (St. Red Bank Catholic High School both years). Eight group titles are seventh in the state, with three Tournament of Champions tied for third. ^[28]

The girls’ swim team won the Division B state championship in 1985-1987, 1989 and 1992. ^[29]

The baseball team won the 2005 Northern II, Group IV Championship 11-0.Hunterdon Central Regional High School. ^[30] The team won the Somerset County Tournament in 1975, 1982, 1983, 1993 and 2009; The five program titles (up to 2018) are the fourth-highest in tournament history since it was founded in 1973. ^[31]

The hockey team won the 2005 Monsignor Kelly Cup. ^[32] The team advanced to the NJSIAA Public A State Finals vs. Ridge High School in 2008 – 5: 0; the most successful season for a six-year program. ^[33]

The women’s softball team won the 2016 Group IV State Championship by beating Egg Harbor Township High School 4-0 in the tournament finals. ^{[34] [35]}

The most successful season for the junior lacrosse team was 2018. They finished the season with a 20-3 record, with two losses in overtime and their last defeat in the semifinals of the tournament. Tournament of Champions eventual winner, Delbarton.They advanced to the county finals, won the program’s first Northern Group IV championship, and won the state title in Group IV 10-3 against Lenape High School in a championship game. ^[36] Head Coach Jamie Lovejoy Wins NJ.com Coach of the Year and four players earned US All-American awards (two of these players are Academic All-Americans), and five players will play college lacrosse. They were ranked fifth in New Jersey by NJ.com and 18th nationwide by MaxPreps. ^{[37] [38] [39]}

The Women’s Spring Athletics Team became the second Group IV champion in 2018. ^[40]

In 2018-2020 The wrestling team became the champion of the country in the category “North II, Group V”. ^[41] There were four state champions at the school: Michael Gatti (2003), Alex Caruso (2006), Brendan Ard (2008 and 2009) and Michael Magaldo (2012). ^{[42] [43]}

The fencing team won the 2020 national saber team. ^[44]
