The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has allowed passengers on planes to carry small pocket knives on board for the first time since the September 11, 2001 attacks. The TSA said that as of April 25 this year, knives with blades that are 6 centimeters long or less and no more than 1-1/4 centimeters wide will be allowed on board aircraft.
According to BFM.RU, other items that will once again be allowed as hand luggage include ski poles, pool cues, hockey sticks and lacrosse equipment. Some other items that were banned from taking on board aircraft after the attacks are still banned, such as razors, cutters or flexible-blade knives.
TSA spokesman David Castelwether said the decision was made to bring US regulations more in line with International Civil Aviation Organization requirements, which should make life easier for travelers.

“This is all part of an overall risk-based security system. It allows traffic security officers to focus their efforts on finding items that pose a much more serious danger, such as explosives,” Castelveter said.
The Flight Attendant Union, which represents about 90,000 aircrew members, called the TSA’s decision short-sighted and that the new rules endanger the lives of all cabin crew and passengers.

Castelveter responded that the TSA had implemented a number of security measures, including armored cockpit doors. In addition, some pilots may be armed, and federal marshals are on board the aircraft. According to a spokesman for the regulator, these measures will help ensure the safety of passengers and crew on board.
