How did Evergreen Lacrosse Club transform into Hammers Lacrosse. What training opportunities does Hammers Lax offer for youth players. How has the program expanded beyond Virginia to North Carolina.
The Origins and Evolution of Evergreen Lacrosse Club
The story of Evergreen Lacrosse Club begins in October 2014, when Ricky Reyes and Chris Bourassa founded the organization in Leesburg, Virginia. Initially conceived as a training-focused program, Evergreen Lacrosse Club operated out of the Evergreen Sportsplex with a clear mission: to provide top-tier instruction and training opportunities for lacrosse athletes, regardless of their skill level or aspirations.
Within months of its inception, the club’s reputation for quality training led to high demand for expanded offerings. Responding to community interest, Evergreen Lacrosse Club launched its travel team program in the summer of 2015. The inaugural season featured three teams: Evergreen HS, Evergreen U15, and Evergreen U13.
Core Philosophy and Rapid Growth
From the outset, Evergreen Lacrosse Club prioritized athlete development through:
- High-quality coaching
- Access to top-notch facilities
- Numerous weekly training opportunities
This unwavering focus on player growth fueled the club’s rapid expansion. In a short span, Evergreen Lacrosse Club grew from three initial teams to fielding up to ten competitive squads. Simultaneously, the organization continued to offer year-round programming for both boys and girls in the community.
Transformation into Hammers Lacrosse
The summer of 2019 marked a significant milestone in the club’s history. Evergreen Lacrosse Club began its transition to Hammers Lacrosse, aligning with sister organizations Hammers Football and Hammers Field Hockey. This rebranding effort brought new colors and a fresh logo, but the core mission remained unchanged: developing athletes and pushing them to reach their full potential both on and off the field.
Impressive Track Record of Player Development
Since launching its travel program in 2015, Hammers Lacrosse has achieved remarkable success in player development and college placement. The organization proudly reports:
- Over 50 student-athletes placed in NCAA programs
- Players competing at Division I, II, and III levels
- Thousands of boys and girls from Virginia and Maryland served
Expansion into North Carolina
In the fall of 2019, Hammers Lacrosse co-founder and former Virginia Technical Director Ricky Reyes relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina. This move, driven by Reyes’ pursuit of a college coaching opportunity at NCAA Division II Queens University of Charlotte, laid the groundwork for Hammers Lacrosse’s expansion into a new market.
Consistent Vision in a New Territory
The North Carolina branch of Hammers Lacrosse maintains the organization’s core focus:
- Providing year-round training opportunities for lacrosse athletes
- Using the sport of lacrosse as a vehicle for developing off-field skills
Adapting to Challenges: COVID-19 and the 2021 Season
The global pandemic presented unique challenges for youth sports organizations, including Hammers Lacrosse. The Evergreen High School Men’s Lacrosse program, affiliated with Hammers Lacrosse, demonstrated resilience and adaptability in the face of these obstacles.
Key Changes for the 2021 Season
- Season shifted to CHSSA’s Phase 4 (April 26, 2021 – June 26, 2021)
- Reduced number of competitions (approximately half the normal 15-game schedule)
- Formal tryouts scheduled for April 26-27, 2021
Winter League Adaptations

- Seven consecutive Saturdays starting March 6, 2021

- Thursdays: On-field training at EHS Turf Field

Community Engagement and Youth Development
Hammers Lacrosse extends its impact beyond its own program through involvement with the Mountain Lacrosse League. This partnership allows the organization to reach a broader base of young athletes and contribute to the growth of lacrosse in the region.
Adapting to Public Health Guidelines
As of February 6, 2021, Jefferson County moved to level blue, allowing for increased youth sports participation while maintaining safety measures:
- 50-person capacity for youth sports (excluding coaches)
- Mandatory mask-wearing for coaches and spectators
- Social distancing requirements for non-household contacts
- Players advised to wear masks when not on the playing field
Building Team Culture Through Shared Experiences
Hammers Lacrosse recognizes the importance of fostering team unity and creating lasting memories. One way they achieve this is through annual team photo sessions, scheduled for April 6-8. This tradition not only provides families with keepsakes but also strengthens the bonds between players and reinforces their identity as part of the Hammers Lacrosse community.
The Impact of Shared Traditions
Team photos and other shared experiences serve multiple purposes within the Hammers Lacrosse organization:
- Cultivating a sense of belonging among players
- Creating visual representations of team progress and growth
- Providing tangible memories for players and families
- Strengthening the overall brand and identity of Hammers Lacrosse
The Future of Hammers Lacrosse: Continuing a Legacy of Excellence
As Hammers Lacrosse looks to the future, the organization remains committed to its founding principles while adapting to the evolving landscape of youth sports. By maintaining a focus on player development, expanding into new markets, and fostering a strong sense of community, Hammers Lacrosse is well-positioned to continue its trajectory of success.
Key Factors for Sustained Growth
- Ongoing investment in coaching development
- Expansion of training facilities and resources
- Continued emphasis on college placement and player advancement
- Adaptation to emerging trends in lacrosse training and competition
- Strengthening partnerships with local schools and youth organizations
Can lacrosse skills translate to success in other areas of life. Hammers Lacrosse firmly believes in the transferable nature of skills developed through lacrosse. The sport cultivates qualities such as teamwork, discipline, strategic thinking, and physical fitness – all of which can contribute to success in academics, career pursuits, and personal relationships.
How does Hammers Lacrosse balance competitive success with inclusive player development. The organization’s approach involves creating multiple tiers of programming to accommodate athletes of varying skill levels and aspirations. While fielding highly competitive travel teams, Hammers Lacrosse also maintains training programs and recreational leagues that focus on skill development and enjoyment of the sport for players of all abilities.
What role does technology play in Hammers Lacrosse’s training methodology. Embracing modern tools and techniques, Hammers Lacrosse incorporates video analysis, performance tracking software, and virtual coaching sessions into its training regimen. This tech-forward approach allows for more personalized instruction, detailed performance feedback, and the ability to study game footage for strategic insights.
Expanding the Reach of Lacrosse
In its mission to grow the sport of lacrosse, Hammers Lacrosse actively engages in community outreach and educational initiatives. These efforts may include:
- Hosting introductory clinics for newcomers to the sport
- Partnering with local schools to introduce lacrosse programs
- Offering equipment loan programs to reduce barriers to entry
- Organizing exhibition matches and demonstrations to increase public interest
How does Hammers Lacrosse support player safety and well-being. Player safety is a top priority for Hammers Lacrosse, reflected in their comprehensive approach to athlete well-being:
- Strict adherence to concussion protocols and safety guidelines
- Regular equipment checks and maintenance
- Emphasis on proper technique to prevent injuries
- Partnerships with sports medicine professionals for injury prevention and treatment
- Education on nutrition, hydration, and overall health for athletes and families
The Economic Impact of Youth Lacrosse Programs
Organizations like Hammers Lacrosse contribute significantly to local economies through various channels:
- Job creation (coaches, administrators, support staff)
- Increased tourism from tournaments and events
- Partnerships with local businesses for equipment, uniforms, and services
- Facility rentals and improvements
How does this economic activity benefit the broader community. The ripple effect of youth sports programs extends beyond direct participants. Local restaurants, hotels, and retail establishments often see increased business during lacrosse events. Additionally, the presence of strong youth sports programs can enhance property values and community desirability, contributing to overall economic health.
Fostering Leadership and Character Development
Hammers Lacrosse recognizes that its role extends beyond teaching sport-specific skills. The organization actively works to instill important life values and leadership qualities in its young athletes:
- Sportsmanship and fair play
- Resilience and perseverance
- Time management and goal-setting
- Effective communication and teamwork
- Community service and social responsibility
How are these qualities developed within the Hammers Lacrosse program. The organization incorporates character development into every aspect of its training and competition. Coaches are trained to provide constructive feedback, emphasize the importance of teamwork, and create opportunities for players to take on leadership roles. Additionally, Hammers Lacrosse may organize community service projects or mentorship programs to further reinforce these values.
Environmental Stewardship in Youth Sports
As awareness of environmental issues grows, youth sports organizations like Hammers Lacrosse have an opportunity to lead by example. Potential initiatives could include:
- Implementing recycling programs at facilities and events
- Encouraging carpooling to reduce carbon emissions
- Using eco-friendly materials for uniforms and equipment when possible
- Organizing field clean-up days to promote environmental awareness
- Partnering with local conservation groups for educational programs
How can environmental awareness be integrated into lacrosse training and culture. Hammers Lacrosse could incorporate environmental themes into team-building activities, such as nature hikes or conservation projects. By fostering a connection between athletes and the natural world, the organization can help develop a generation of environmentally conscious lacrosse players.
The Global Perspective: Lacrosse’s Growing International Presence
While Hammers Lacrosse primarily operates in the United States, the sport of lacrosse is experiencing significant growth on the international stage. This global expansion presents both opportunities and challenges for organizations like Hammers Lacrosse:
- Potential for international exchanges and tournaments
- Exposure to diverse playing styles and strategies
- Increased competition for college roster spots and scholarships
- Growing market for lacrosse equipment and training resources
How might Hammers Lacrosse adapt to this changing landscape. To stay competitive in an increasingly global sport, Hammers Lacrosse could consider:
- Hosting international players or coaches for training camps
- Organizing trips to lacrosse events in other countries
- Incorporating international rule variations into training sessions
- Developing partnerships with lacrosse organizations in other nations
By embracing the sport’s global growth, Hammers Lacrosse can provide its athletes with a more comprehensive and culturally rich lacrosse experience, preparing them for success in an interconnected world.

OUR HISTORY
The Evergreen Lacrosse Club was founded in October 2014 by Ricky Reyes and club President/Managing Member, Chris Bourassa. The training-only program was based out of the Evergreen Sportsplex in Leesburg, Virginia and aimed to provide top notch instruction and training opportunities for athletes in the area no matter what their goal may have been whether it was to prepare themselves to play at the highest level or even learn how to play the game.
After a very successful first few months of just offering training to the public, the demand for the club to launch another program, Travel Teams, was high. In the Summer of 2015, the Evergreen Lacrosse Club fielded their first three teams – Evergreen HS, Evergreen U15 and Evergreen U13. The travel program revolved around the development of the athlete and was accomplished through high quality coaching, top notch facilities, and numerous training opportunities each week that they could take advantage of. As the years went on, the focus remained the same and the club quickly grew from three teams to as high as ten in a short period of time while continuing to offer year-round programming for Boys and Girls in the community.
In the Summer of 2019, the Evergreen Lacrosse Club began its transition to Hammers Lacrosse as a way to be consistent with our sister clubs (Hammers Football and Hammers Field Hockey). Despite wearing new colors and a new logo, our mission of developing our athletes and pushing them to be the best versions of themselves has never changed. Since the launch of our travel program in 2015, we have proudly sent over 50 student-athletes to go on and play at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels while also serving thousands of boys and girls from all over Virginia and Maryland.
In the Fall of 2019, Hammers Co-Founder and former Virginia Technical Director, Ricky Reyes, relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina in order to pursue a college coaching opportunity at NCAA Division II Queens University of Charlotte. While there, Reyes began breaking ground for the expansion of Hammers Lacrosse into North Carolina where the focus is consistent and will revolve around providing year-round training opportunities for lacrosse athletes and using the sport of lacrosse to develop their skills off the field.

COVID UPDATE
Due to current COVID state & county regulations, we are unsure of exactly how this season will look. As of Jan 15th 2021, MLAX and AYL are planning on a regularly scheduled Spring Lacrosse season, however obviously things can change rapidly and at a
ny time. As such, if you would like to play this Spring please register as normal. Family registration credits from Spring 2020 season will still be honored. If the season is halted mid-season for any reason (or doesn’t start at all), MLAX will refund registration fees pro-rata based on games played. MLAX’s largest costs are dues paid to AYL (game scheduling, refs, etc) and EPRD (field time) and we have agreements with those entities in terms of refunds. There is probably a bunch of stuff that will happen during the season that we are not forecasting, but we will all just work through it the best we can and try to make it a great season for our kids!!
Dates for Spring 2021 lacrosse season. Please be aware that these are subject to change.
- Practice to begin late February weather permitting.
- First games March 13.
- Final games May 8.
- AYL Playoffs May 15/16 (all teams make the playoffs). Location tbd.

Who We Are | Hammers Lacrosse Club
The Hammers Lacrosse Club is the premiere developmental lacrosse club in Northern Virginia specifically based out of Loudoun County for boys in 3rd-12th Grade. The club was founded in October of 2014 by Ricky Reyes (Club Director) and Chris Bourassa (President/Managing Partner). Our athletes train at our home, and one of the best facilities in the region, the Evergreen Sports Complex, while staffed with experienced and professional lacrosse coaches who are dedicated to the sport and our athletes. This staff consists of current and former college + high school coaches and current + former college players that not only aim to develop the skills of our athletes on the field but to also serve as positive mentors to help them succeed in the classroom and in life. We are proud to have helped develop and prepare over 75+ former Hammers Athletes to be successful student-athletes at the college level our first graduating class in 2017.
We believe that lacrosse is an extension of the classroom—it is not only a sport, but it’s a lifestyle of character building, team effort, and passion. Hammers Lacrosse provides an innovative atmosphere designed to train and support while building character and positive traits that will last a lifetime. We place a heavy emphasis on the development of our athlete’s skills and IQ rather than just drawing up plays and playing within a system – our goal is to develop the long-term success of the player. We accomplish this through an innovative hybrid training model that includes up-tempo full field skill work, high-repetition positional training, and detailed small-sided concept training while also bringing in a virtual component through Film Analysis and Whiteboard Sessions led by our staff. These virtual sessions help ensure our student-athletes are not only developing into more skilled players but are also developing their IQ and knowledge of the game.
We are confident that have all of the resources and infrastructure needed to develop our athletes to become the best that they can be and become a nationally recognized program that will benefit our players in the long-term.
Lacrosse Coaches | Loudoun County, VA
Club Director Ricky Reyes had this to say about the newest addition to the Hammers Staff:
“The addition of Coach Phelps is absolutely groundbreaking for our entire program. While we are proud of the efforts we have made the past few years in sending over 65 of our athletes to the NCAA level, we are confident that having Coach Phelps with our program will give our guys the best opportunities.
Maximizing the exposure of our athletes and finding the best fit for them athletically and academically is a top priority for us at Hammers – Phelps is the perfect person to lead our young men through the process. He is experienced and is well-respected in the lacrosse community. He will have an immediate positive impact for our program and athletes”.
Coach Phelps brings over 10 years of NCAA coaching experience to the Hammers:
Division I University of Massachusetts
Division I United States Naval Academy
Division II Limestone University (5x National Champs)
Division III Rhodes College
Division III Goucher College
Division III Marywood University
Division III Guilford College
Phelps will immediately take over all recruiting efforts for the Hammers alongside Director Ricky Reyes, a current Assistant Coach at D2 Queens University of Charlotte. He will work with our players on an individual basis to find the best fit for each athlete using his vast network of college coaches paired with his experience recruiting athletes to some of the best programs in the nation.
Coach Jeremy Phelps on joining the Hammers:
“I’m incredibly excited to join the Hammers organization and have the opportunity to help these student athletes identify and pursue the right fit at the collegiate level both academically and athletically. In a constantly changing recruiting landscape, my goal is to help the players and their families navigate an often difficult and confusing recruiting process.
Having spent 10 years in the college coaching ranks, I have worked through the recruiting process with hundreds of student athletes. I intend to use this experience to assist the Hammers program to help their student athletes find the right home for the next four years of their academic and athletic careers.
My intent will be very different than that of many coaches in the club world today – I don’t want to simply sell our players to the highest level, but instead plan to work with these student athletes to identify the schools that are the right fit, not just the highest level”
Evergreen Lacrosse Club Serves Lacrosse to Virginia Youth
The East Coast is the home of some of the nation’s best lacrosse programs, organizations, tournaments and clinics. States like Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey are well known for fostering lacrosse talent. However, as lacrosse continues to grow as one of the nations most popular sports, other states around the country have become very involved in promoting lacrosse.
In Virginia, one of organization aiming to make a difference in the youth lacrosse community is Evergreen Lacrosse Club. The organization promotes itself as Virginia’s premiere developmental lacrosse club. Evergreen Lacrosse Club offers programs for both boys and girls with a specified training regime taught by their staff.
“The Evergreen Lacrosse Club strives to develop male and female student-athletes of all ages and skill levels that will excel on the field and in life through our innovative year-round training and travel programs,” the organization says.
The organization is more than just a place to teach lacrosse. Evergreen strives to teach life-skills to their youth participants as well. “Our mission is to utilize the sport of lacrosse as a vehicle to develop our members to be the best student-athletes they can be while providing them with the skills necessary to contribute and lead in today’s society,” the organization highlights.
The organization was developed in December 2014 with a goal of making lacrosse more accessible to the youth of Virginia. All Evergreen Lacrosse Club participants get to play in the Evergreen Sportsplex, which is a beautiful facility. “We operate out of the Evergreen Sportsplex in Leesburg, Virginia which provides an unique atmosphere for all of our student-athletes and guests with our four turf fields under the lights,” the organization says.
Evergreen Lacrosse Club uses travel programs, a fall league, as well as winter and spring clinics to teach the game to its athletes. “The Evergreen Lacrosse Club offers an exclusive program for highly skilled and hard-working student-athletes who want to take their game to the next level,” the organization says.
“We offer an innovative, year-round training curriculum that will push all of our male and female student-athletes to become the best that they can be both on and off the field.”
Evergreen is currently running their 6-week fall league program.

WSU men’s club lacrosse rebuilds for upcoming season – The Daily Evergreen
A sport as common on the East Coast as soccer, lacrosse is often harder to find on the West Coast. Nestled in the rolling wheat fields, the WSU men’s club lacrosse team has held its ground while pushing for the sport to be recognized by the Pac-12.
A majority of the Division I collegiate teams are located on the East Coast, whereas west coast schools tend to have club lacrosse teams.
“With the recent growth of lacrosse on the West Coast, I hope to see lacrosse become a D-1 sport in the Pac-12 and be able to compete with the teams on the East Coast within 20 years,” said Beau Olson, sophomore WSU men’s club lacrosse midfielder.
Last fall, the team had a tough time getting players to come out since there were a few injuries and had lost key players who had graduated the previous spring.
The team finished with a record of 3-12 last season and is projected to come in last in their division for the spring season. This preseason ranking does not worry the Cougars.
The Cougars added a few more players since then. The team now has 18 players, four more than they had last season.
“We have some inexperience and undersized guys on the team but we have some really good shooters on attack which helps,” team president and goalie Devin Ehli said.
Freshman defensive midfielder Josh Emmy said he joined the team because he played in high school and wanted to keep playing in college.
“My best experience this year so far was getting to know my teammates and beating Central Washington last fall,” Emmy said.
With some new faces on the team this year, the eagerness and talent of the new team members will supplement the players familiar with playing club lacrosse in college.
“Even though we have a young team, we definitely have some talent and hope to go on a good run this year,” Olson said.
The team was also able to find a coach, which was a step forward from the previous season when they played without a coach.
“Last year I played on the team and this year I couldn’t so I decided to coach,” Trent Wellner said.
Wellner previously coached for a high school lacrosse team in the Tri-Cities and credits that experience in aiding his decision to coach the WSU lacrosse team.
While games have not started yet this season, the team is focused and has been practicing hard.
The lacrosse team plays other teams from along the West Coast. It competes in the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League (PNCLL) against other D-1 schools in Canada, Washington, Idaho and Oregon.
It is not uncommon for the team to play D-2 lacrosse teams around the Pacific Northwest such as University of Puget Sound, Central Washington and Gonzaga.
Olson said he is especially looking forward to the upcoming road trip to California.
“We will be playing USC, UCLA and Claremont on our trip to California. It will be a cool experience, especially for the new guys on the team,” Olson said.
The WSU men’s club lacrosse team faces off against UPS in its season opener this Saturday in Tacoma.
“UPS has two really good attack men that can score without being assisted. They can carry the ball themselves and dodge defenders. Stopping those players from getting the ball or stopping them when they do will be important,” Ehli said.
The team will take their new coach and teammates to Tacoma with a clean slate as they begin their 2016 season.

Product FAQ
What are hunting boots?
Technically, hunting boots can be any boots you wear while hunting. However, the best hunting boots are for hunters. Hunting boots are often classified according to the type of hunting they are intended for, as different hunters have different needs.
However, you do not need to panic as there are no strict rules regarding the boots to wear while hunting. The best hunting boots are those that suit you well and suit the task you will be doing.
How are hunting boots different from hiking boots?
While hunting boots and hiking boots have a lot in common, they also differ. Hiking boots are made to help you cover the ground, and this is true of some hunting boots.
However, some of the best hunting boots are heavier than regular hiking boots and have better insulation because they are built for hunting situations where the wearer will remain stationary for extended periods of time.
How tall should my hunting boots be?
It really depends on what you are hunting and in what area. If you will be hunting long distances and on dry ground, you will most likely need a lower, lighter boot that offers mobility and ankle support without weighing you down.
If you are hunting in wetlands or bodies of water, you will want your boots to go higher. There is nothing more miserable than wet feet on the hunt.
What are the best hunting boots?
The best hunting boots for you are the ones that suit you and your hunting. The most important things to consider are the amount of walking you need to do, the amount of time you will spend without moving, and the season you plan to hunt in boots. These factors will help you choose size, weight, and insulation.
Verdict – BEST HUNTING BOOTS
The best hunting boots will be different for you, depending on what you do with them. If you will be spending a lot of time in wet but not too harsh conditions, the LaCrosse Alphaburly may be the best hunting boots for you; although you can try some to get the correct size.
However, if you are going to traverse rough terrain, then the best hunting boots for you may be required for the Kenetrek Mountain Extreme if you have a lot of money, or for the men’s guiding gear if you don’t have one.
