Which colleges offer men’s lacrosse teams in Division I. How many Division I schools have lacrosse programs. What are the top-ranked Division I lacrosse programs. Where can aspiring lacrosse players find opportunities to compete at the highest collegiate level.
The Landscape of Division I Men’s Lacrosse
Men’s lacrosse has been growing in popularity across college campuses in the United States, particularly at the Division I level. This surge in interest has led to an increase in the number of schools offering lacrosse programs and scholarships. Division I, being the highest level of collegiate athletics, attracts top talent and provides a platform for athletes to showcase their skills on a national stage.
Currently, there are 75 NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse programs. These programs are spread across various conferences, with some conferences being more lacrosse-centric than others. The sport’s stronghold remains primarily in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, but it has been expanding to other parts of the country in recent years.
Notable Division I Lacrosse Conferences
Several conferences are known for their strong lacrosse programs:
- Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)
- Big Ten Conference
- Ivy League
- Patriot League
- Big East Conference
- America East Conference
These conferences consistently produce top-ranked teams and individual players who go on to professional careers in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) or the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL).
Top-Ranked Division I Men’s Lacrosse Programs
While rankings can fluctuate from year to year, some programs have established themselves as perennial powerhouses in Division I men’s lacrosse:
- University of Virginia
- Duke University
- University of Maryland
- Syracuse University
- Johns Hopkins University
- Yale University
- Cornell University
- Penn State University
- University of North Carolina
- University of Notre Dame
These programs are known for their exceptional coaching, state-of-the-art facilities, and consistent success in recruiting top talent.
Emerging Division I Lacrosse Programs
While traditional powerhouses continue to dominate, several emerging programs have been making waves in recent years:
- University of Denver
- Ohio State University
- Loyola University Maryland
- Rutgers University
- University of Massachusetts
These programs have invested heavily in their lacrosse teams and have seen significant improvements in their rankings and performance in national tournaments.
Scholarship Opportunities in Division I Men’s Lacrosse
Division I men’s lacrosse is an equivalency sport, meaning that coaches have a set number of scholarships they can distribute among team members. The NCAA allows up to 12.6 scholarships for Division I men’s lacrosse programs. However, it’s important to note that not all schools offer the full allotment of scholarships, and many players receive partial scholarships.
Prospective student-athletes should be aware that competition for these scholarships is fierce. Coaches look for a combination of athletic ability, academic performance, and character when making scholarship decisions.
The Recruitment Process for Division I Lacrosse
The recruitment process for Division I lacrosse can be intense and starts early. Many top programs begin identifying potential recruits as early as their freshman or sophomore year of high school. Key steps in the recruitment process include:
- Attending showcase tournaments and camps
- Creating and distributing highlight reels
- Maintaining strong academic performance
- Communicating with college coaches
- Visiting campuses and meeting with team members
- Understanding and complying with NCAA recruitment rules
Aspiring Division I lacrosse players should be proactive in their recruitment efforts and seek guidance from high school coaches, club coaches, and recruitment specialists.
Academic Requirements for Division I Lacrosse Players
To be eligible to play Division I lacrosse, student-athletes must meet certain academic standards set by the NCAA. These requirements include:
- Completing 16 core courses
- Earning a minimum GPA in core courses
- Achieving a qualifying score on the SAT or ACT
- Graduating from high school
The exact requirements can change, so prospective student-athletes should regularly check the NCAA Eligibility Center for the most up-to-date information.
Understanding the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR)
The Academic Progress Rate is a measure used by the NCAA to ensure that student-athletes are making progress toward earning their degrees. Programs that consistently fall below the required APR can face penalties, including loss of scholarships or postseason bans. This metric underscores the importance of academic performance for Division I lacrosse players.
The Future of Division I Men’s Lacrosse
The landscape of Division I men’s lacrosse is continually evolving. Several trends are shaping the future of the sport at this level:
- Expansion to new regions: More schools in the South and West are adding Division I lacrosse programs.
- Increased media coverage: With growing popularity, lacrosse is receiving more television and streaming coverage.
- Emphasis on diversity: Programs are focusing on increasing diversity within their teams and the sport as a whole.
- Technological advancements: Teams are incorporating advanced analytics and training technologies to improve performance.
These trends suggest that the sport will continue to grow and evolve at the Division I level, providing more opportunities for aspiring lacrosse players.
Potential Conference Realignments
As with other college sports, conference realignments could impact the competitive landscape of Division I lacrosse. Schools moving between conferences may lead to shifts in the balance of power and create new rivalries.
Balancing Athletics and Academics in Division I Lacrosse
Playing Division I lacrosse is a significant commitment that requires careful balancing of athletic and academic responsibilities. Student-athletes must manage rigorous practice schedules, travel for games, and maintain their academic standing. Many programs offer support services to help students succeed both on the field and in the classroom, including:
- Academic advisors
- Tutoring services
- Time management workshops
- Study halls
- Career development resources
Successful Division I lacrosse players often develop strong time management and organizational skills that serve them well beyond their college careers.
The Role of Redshirting in Division I Lacrosse
Redshirting is a common practice in Division I athletics, including lacrosse. This allows a student-athlete to practice with the team and extend their period of eligibility while focusing on academic progress or physical development. Redshirting can be a strategic decision for both players and coaches, potentially leading to a stronger team in future seasons.
Beyond College: Professional Opportunities for Division I Lacrosse Players
While the primary focus for most Division I lacrosse players is their college career, some may have the opportunity to continue playing at the professional level. The two main professional lacrosse leagues in North America are:
- Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
- Premier Lacrosse League (PLL)
These leagues draft top talent from Division I programs, providing a pathway for players to continue their lacrosse careers after college. However, it’s important to note that professional opportunities in lacrosse are limited compared to other sports, and most players will need to pursue careers outside of playing lacrosse professionally.
Coaching and Administrative Careers in Lacrosse
Many former Division I lacrosse players go on to careers in coaching or sports administration. Their experience and knowledge of the game at the highest collegiate level make them valuable assets to high school, college, and professional programs. Some may also pursue careers in lacrosse equipment manufacturing, event management, or sports marketing, leveraging their connections and expertise in the lacrosse community.
The Impact of Division I Lacrosse on Personal Development
Participating in a Division I lacrosse program can have a profound impact on a student-athlete’s personal development. The challenges and experiences encountered during their college career can foster valuable skills and traits, including:
- Leadership
- Teamwork
- Resilience
- Time management
- Goal-setting
- Handling pressure
These skills often translate well to future careers and personal endeavors, making Division I lacrosse players attractive candidates in various professional fields.
Building a Network Through Division I Lacrosse
The connections made during a Division I lacrosse career can be invaluable. Teammates, coaches, alumni, and opponents form a network that can provide support, advice, and opportunities long after graduation. Many programs have strong alumni networks that actively support current players and recent graduates in their career pursuits.

Week MHL
The 19th week of the Parimatch of the MHL regular season has come to an end. By tradition, we present to your attention its results, figures and highlights.
Let’s start with the highlights of the week. In this issue: a powerful debut puck by Maxim Velikov, an orbital launch from Kirill Vasiliev, a goalie shot “between the ears” from Raul Yakupov, a bunch of miracle saves, Gleb Petrov’s solo, Ostap Maslov’s lacrosse, and much more!
10. Goal by Maxim Velikov (Red Army)

Yaroslavl dominance. Heroes of the Week
Loko forward Yaroslav Likhachev became the best scorer and sniper of the week. During the week he scored 10 (7+3) points. Also 10 (4+6) points from his partner in the Yaroslavl team Daniil But .
Six assists were made by: Daniil But (Loko) and Vladimir Konov (Loko-76).
Best defender-scorer: Alexey Kozhevnikov (Loko-76) – 5 (1+4) points.
Two poker games took place at once, their authors were Yaroslav Likhachev (Loko) and Vladislav Appelgants (Mammoths of Yugra).
Hat-tricks were scored by Mikhail Kurkin and Vladimir Konov (both Loko-76), Vadim Sushchev (Rook) and Maxim Beryozkin (Loko). Sushchev’s partner in the Togliatti team, Ostap Maslov, scored a fashionable lacrosse goal this season.
Five goalkeepers managed to keep the gate intact. One of them is Maxim Arefiev (“Sakhalin Sharks”). He showed the best coefficient of reliability – 1.01 in three matches. He spent 178 minutes on the ice, missed 3 goals and was named the best player of the week.
Stanislav Pylaev
from the “Tyumen Legion” reflected the most shots in one match. In the meeting against Rook on January 15, he parried 52 throws, but this did not help the Tyumen team to win.
Yaroslavl teams score the most. Team achievements
The most scoring team of the week was Loko , Yaroslavl sent 31 goals to the rivals’ goal.
Top 3 hitters:
Konov – Korablev – Kurkin
(“Loko-76”) – 9 goals.
Ours in the KHL
Maksim Shabanov opened the scoring for senior goals!
And Avto’s top scorer Viktor Neuchev played his first match in the KHL. Avtomobilist beat Severstal 5:2.
Youth Hockey League – The history of the giant from the MHL Dolzhenkov: he passed the exam with 98 points, scored lacrosses and broke the protective glass
And now the forward is the best scorer of the army.
The forward of the Red Army and the CSKA system, Kirill Dolzhenkov, at the age of 18, has already grown to 198 centimeters. Perhaps this is not the limit. In the 2022/2023 season, Dolzhenkov plays more often in the Youth Hockey League (5 + 6 in ten matches). Kirill is also involved in CSKA (five games by mid-September) and is the highest forward to play in the 2022/2023 KHL championship. He is one centimeter taller than Nikita Popugaev (Sochi) and Yevgeny Timkin (Salavat Yulaev).
The tall striker is one of the best prospects in the army system. The 18-year-old hockey player demonstrates impressive performance for his size. In 62 games in the MHL, he scored 47 (22 + 25) points. As a rule, he does not play in the leading links, but he enjoys the confidence of Rinat Khasanov.
“Everybody hates running and the Cooper test.” 198-centimeter striker Kirill Dolzhenkov – about his debut in the MHL, the Red Army and 98 points on the Unified State Examination in Russian
« Sometimes I walk past passers-by in a CSKA jacket, the most curious people ask me, am I a volleyball player or a basketball player? Hockey as an option doesn’t even appear there ,” the hockey player said in an interview with the Metaratings website.
Like most players, Dolzhenkov got into hockey thanks to his parents:
When I was little, my parents and I went to the skating rink. For the first time in my life, I got on skates and rode from side to side without falling. My parents decided to take me to the ice so that I could get acquainted with this sport […] Thanks to them, I was always well equipped, I did extra work if there was a need for it. They are my main help in hockey and life.
- Kirill Dolzhenkov, Red Army forward
Despite his height, Dolzhenkov was not sent to the defense, or to the goal. The fashion for huge goalkeepers began after Kirill completed his initial hockey education. Moreover, the striker says that he never had problems with stroking opponents, and even more so, the dimensions made it possible to push through opponents: many children’s coaches in Russia prefer to use this.
In February 2020, the forward played at the Youth Olympics, where the team with Matvey Michkov, Ivan Miroshnichenko and Artyom Duda moved all opponents. Although Dolzhenkov was not at the forefront of that team (it was difficult to do against the backdrop of the incredible Michkov), he scored an assisting hat-trick in the semi-final with the Finns. In it, the Russians defeated the opponent 10:1.
At the age of 17, speaking at the championship of Moscow and in the Junior Hockey League, Dolzhenkov scored 41 goals in 27 games. The debut season in the MHL turned out to be no less successful: 28 (14 + 14) points in 33 matches, with almost 16 minutes of playing time per match. Dolzhenkov also played for the junior team. In a friendly match with the Czech Republic, Kirill broke the glass after a brave opponent held a power striker against the forward.
Broken glass is something new in my career. Frankly speaking, the sensations are strange, it was not very pleasant. I hit the edge of the glass. I didn’t hurt myself, but there were many small cuts on my arms and neck,” Dolzhenkov commented on a rare incident. But, more importantly, Kirill scored five points in three matches and, as expected, attracted the attention of foreign experts.
Four goals and broken glass. Prospect of the “Red Army” declared himself in the national team
Already in his first season in the MHL, the striker scored a lacrosse goal. Such pucks have become much more frequent, but their execution still requires a high level of performance. It would seem that a player with the dimensions of Dolzhenkov could simply stand at the patch and bury rebounds, or catch ricochets in the majority. But the forward has a lot of stylish pucks with a beautiful outplaying of the opponent, and there are enough power passes a la Valery Nichushkin.
On the ice, Dolzhenkov looks like a man among boys. He has a strong skating, thanks to his size it is difficult to take the puck away from him, he is not afraid of rough work. For such a big guy, he has surprisingly good hands, there are no obvious flaws in his game.
- Columbus fan site Union and the Blue.
This club chose Dolzhenkov in the fourth round of the draft. The striker himself said that ten league clubs were interested in him.
Dolzhenkov dominates when playing at the boards and can make the right decisions in difficult game situations. Kirill can both bury the puck and send it into the goal with an accurate and powerful shot, both with a wrist and a flick. However, his playmaking skills are just as intriguing, as his ability to read the game and hold the puck creates space for teammates.
- Future Considerations Scout Jake Janso
In the 2021/2022 season, Dolzhenkov played in the final of the Kharlamov Cup along with the Red Army. In the regular season 2022/2023, he leads the top scorers of the army with 11 (5 + 6) points in eight games. At the same time, the forward nominally plays the third link of Rinat Khasanov’s team. In September, he made his debut at the adult level: five shifts (2:33 minutes) and a power reception in the match against Kunlun, but this is just the beginning.
