How do high white socks represent unity in West Genesee’s lacrosse program. What is the significance of this long-standing tradition. Why does Coach Mike Messere enforce strict sock rules for his players. How do former players view this unique aspect of their lacrosse experience.
The Legacy of High White Socks in West Genesee Lacrosse
For 36 years, the boys lacrosse team at West Genesee High School has maintained a unique and unwavering tradition: plain white socks pulled up high. This simple yet distinctive aspect of their uniform has become an iconic symbol of one of the most successful high school lacrosse programs in the nation.
Every player, at every level within the Camillus school district, adheres to this uniform requirement. The tradition transcends generations, with current players often wearing the same style of socks their fathers and older brothers once wore on the field.
The Origin of the High White Sock Tradition
The high white sock tradition began shortly after Mike Messere became the head coach in 1976. Prior to his tenure, the team’s uniform featured blue baseball stirrups with gold stripes covered by white crew socks. Messere, preferring a cleaner look, quickly implemented the change to plain white socks worn just below the knee.
The Symbolism Behind the Socks
Why are these high white socks so important to the West Genesee lacrosse program? The socks represent more than just a uniform requirement; they embody the core values and philosophy of the team:
- Unity: The identical appearance fosters a sense of team cohesion
- Discipline: Adhering to the sock rule demonstrates players’ commitment to the program
- Tradition: The socks connect current players to the program’s rich history
- Pride: Wearing the high white socks is considered an honor among players
Jeff Tambroni, a West Genesee graduate and current Penn State head coach, explains, “The high socks represented unity more than anything — a way to blend in vs. stand out.” This philosophy underscores the team-first mentality that has been a hallmark of West Genesee’s success.
Coach Messere’s Strict Enforcement of the Sock Rule
Coach Mike Messere, who has led the Wildcats to 15 state championships and over 735 wins, is known for his unwavering commitment to the high white sock tradition. His enforcement of this rule is legendary among players and alumni.
The No-Logo Policy
Messere’s sock requirements go beyond just color and length. Athletic logos, such as Nike swooshes, are strictly prohibited. Players caught with visible logos may be required to change socks or cover them with white athletic tape.
This attention to detail reflects Messere’s broader coaching philosophy. He believes that a disciplined approach to even the smallest aspects of the game contributes to overall success on the field.
The Impact of the Sock Tradition on Players
How do players view this unique aspect of their uniform? For many, wearing the high white socks is a source of pride and a connection to the program’s storied history.
A Family Legacy
Tim Barber, a senior captain, wears his older brother’s game socks from previous state championship seasons. He sees it as both an honor and a responsibility, saying, “Wearing his socks shows I have to work as hard as he did, and be a leader like he was, put in the work ethic. Putting on those socks means something to me.”
This sentiment is echoed by Matt Schattner, another team captain whose father played for Messere in the 1980s. The shared experience of wearing the same style of socks creates a tangible link between generations of West Genesee lacrosse players.
The Socks as a Rite of Passage
For many players, adhering to the sock rule is seen as a rite of passage within the West Genesee lacrosse program. It’s a visible sign of their commitment to the team and its traditions.
Former players often look back on the sock requirement with a mixture of nostalgia and respect. Mike Schattner, who played for Messere in the 1980s, recalls a particular incident that highlights the importance placed on this aspect of the uniform:
“We opened with an impressive victory over a team that had just played for a state championship. At the next practice, Messere lit into the Wildcats because one player did not wear his socks correctly. Messere admonished the team for its sloppiness.”
This anecdote underscores how even small details were used to instill discipline and maintain high standards within the program.
Bucking the Trend: West Genesee’s Commitment to Tradition
In an era where lacrosse sock designs are becoming increasingly bold and colorful, West Genesee’s commitment to plain white socks stands out. Many manufacturers now offer socks in shocking colors and patterns, but the Wildcats remain steadfast in their traditional look.
This adherence to tradition in the face of changing fashion trends speaks to the program’s values and identity. It’s a visible reminder that at West Genesee, team unity and discipline take precedence over individual expression through uniform variations.
The Practical Side of the Sock Tradition
Beyond its symbolic importance, the high white sock tradition has practical implications for players. Team captain Matt Schattner keeps three pairs in his equipment bag, allowing him to loan out a pair for emergencies. This practice ensures that every player can adhere to the uniform requirements, even in unexpected situations.
The Broader Impact of West Genesee’s Lacrosse Culture
The high white sock tradition is just one aspect of a larger culture of excellence and discipline that permeates the West Genesee lacrosse program. This culture has produced numerous successful players and coaches who have gone on to make significant impacts in the sport.
Success Beyond High School
Many West Genesee alumni have gone on to successful collegiate and professional lacrosse careers. The values instilled through traditions like the high white socks often contribute to their success at higher levels of play.
Jeff Tambroni, for example, has become a highly respected coach at the collegiate level, leading programs at Cornell and Penn State. His coaching philosophy clearly reflects the lessons learned during his time at West Genesee.
The Future of the High White Sock Tradition
As West Genesee’s lacrosse program continues to evolve, will the high white sock tradition remain? Given its deep roots and significance to players past and present, it seems likely that this unique aspect of the Wildcats’ uniform will endure.
The tradition has already spanned multiple generations of players, creating a shared experience that binds the West Genesee lacrosse community together. As long as the program continues to value unity, discipline, and connection to its history, the high white socks will likely remain a proud symbol of what it means to be a West Genesee Wildcat.
Lessons from the Sock Tradition
What can other sports programs learn from West Genesee’s commitment to this seemingly small detail? The high white sock tradition teaches several valuable lessons:
- Consistency in small things can lead to excellence in big things
- Shared traditions can create strong bonds within a team
- Sometimes, standing apart means sticking to your principles
- Respecting history can provide motivation and inspiration for current players
While not every program needs to adopt a specific sock rule, the underlying principles of unity, discipline, and respect for tradition can be applied in various ways to build a strong team culture.
The Broader Context: Uniforms and Team Identity in Sports
West Genesee’s high white sock tradition raises interesting questions about the role of uniforms in shaping team identity and culture. How do other sports teams use specific uniform elements to foster unity and discipline?
In many sports, teams have unique uniform traditions that go beyond standard colors and logos. These can include:
- Specific hairstyles or facial hair rules
- Restrictions on visible tattoos or jewelry
- Requirements for certain types of undershirts or compression gear
- Rules about how uniforms should be worn (e.g., tucked in shirts)
While some may view such rules as overly strict, proponents argue that they help create a cohesive team identity and instill discipline that translates to on-field performance.
The Psychology of Uniforms in Sports
Research has shown that uniforms can have a significant psychological impact on athletes. Wearing a team uniform can:
- Increase feelings of unity and belonging
- Boost confidence and self-esteem
- Enhance focus and mental preparation
- Create a sense of responsibility to uphold team standards
In this context, West Genesee’s high white sock tradition can be seen as more than just a quirky rule. It’s a powerful tool for shaping team psychology and performance.
Balancing Tradition and Innovation in Sports
The West Genesee sock tradition raises an important question for all sports programs: How can teams balance respect for tradition with the need for innovation and adaptation?
In an ever-changing sports landscape, programs must find ways to honor their history while also embracing new techniques, technologies, and ideas. West Genesee’s approach suggests that it’s possible to maintain core traditions while still evolving in other areas.
The Role of Symbols in Team Culture
The high white socks at West Genesee serve as a powerful symbol of the program’s values and history. What role do such symbols play in building and maintaining a strong team culture? Some potential benefits include:
- Creating a sense of continuity across generations
- Providing a tangible reminder of team values
- Fostering pride and belonging among team members
- Differentiating the team from competitors
By understanding the power of such symbols, other sports programs can identify and cultivate their own unique traditions that reinforce their core values and identity.
As we reflect on West Genesee’s high white sock tradition, it becomes clear that sometimes, the smallest details can have the biggest impact on a team’s culture and success. Whether it’s socks, haircuts, or any other uniform element, the key is finding symbols and practices that authentically represent the program’s values and resonate with players across generations.
West Genesee boys lacrosse socks have been plain white and pulled up high for 36 years

The handing down of sports equipment comes with the territory of being a little brother. Senior Tim Barber of West Genesee High School has inherited his share of used gloves, elbow pads, sticks and various other staples of lacrosse gear from Ryan Barber, who played on state championship teams with the Wildcats in 2005 and 2008.
Tim Barber called the equipment handoff “a little family tradition.” There is one particular item from his brother’s equipment bag that Barber is wearing this season that is personal and unusual. Barber is rocking his brother’s old West Genny game socks.
» Video: high white socks a tradition at West Genesee
They are white and they are high. They are athletic socks worn just below the knee that are the most iconic piece of a uniform at one of the most successful high school lacrosse programs in the nation. Barber calls it an honor to wear his brother’s high white socks.
“Wearing his socks,” said Barber, a senior captain, “it shows I have to work as hard as he did, and be a leader like he was, put in the work ethic. Putting on those socks means something to me.”
It does to everyone who plays lacrosse at West Genesee.
Members of the boys lacrosse team have been wearing high white socks since shortly after head coach Mike Messere became the head coach in 1976. They are worn by every player at every level within the Camillus school district.
Fashion trends in socks may come and go — and right now, manufacturers are pushing designs for lacrosse teams in shocking colors and bold patterns. But they remain the same at West Genesee, game after game, year after year, decade after decade.
The socks are always white and extra-long because they must be pulled up so they rest just below the knee. In the’70s, they were called tube socks. Today, they’re most likely soccer socks. Athletic logos such as Nike swooshes are banned. If Messere does an inspection, players may have to change socks or cover up the logos with white athletic tape.
“He gives them looks and they’ve got to hide it somehow,” Barber said.
Jim Commentucci / The Post-StandardWest Genesee varsity lacrosse teammates gather prior to the Wildcats’ home opener against Pittsford March 31, 2012 at West Genesse High School in Camillus.
West Genesee captain Matt Schattner keeps three pairs in his equipment bag. That way, he can loan out a pair for emergencies.
Like Barber, Schattner has his connection to the tradition as well. His father, Mike, played lacrosse for Messere between 1985 and 1987. Mike Schattner remembers a season in which the Wildcats opened with an impressive victory over a team that had just played for a state championship.
At the next practice, Messere lit into the Wildcats because one player did not wear his socks correctly. Messere admonished the team for its sloppiness.
Today, Mike Schattner feels a different pride in watching his son play. He looks on the field and sees a living link to his own time playing for the Wildcats.
“It’s quite rewarding to see he and his teammates go through and share experiences that me and my friends and former teammates had 25 years later,” said Schattner. “We still talk about it. It was such a significant part of our lives.”
Messere is beginning his 36th season as head coach of the Wildcats. When he took over the program in 1976 from Bill Wormuth, West Genesee’s uniform featured blue baseball stirrups with gold stripes around the top covered by white crew socks.
Messere said he liked the high-sock look but not the stripes or the idea of a stirrup under the foot arch. Messere said he made the change quickly. Paul Stockwell, who played on the 1976 team, said he remembers going to Charney’s that season and buying high white socks as ordered by Messere.
“You see a lot of teams where some have black socks, some orange socks, some no socks,” Messere said. “I just think it’s a sloppy look. This is more a disciplined approach.”
Messere, who has won 15 state championships at West Genesee and more than 735 games as its coach, said he wants everyone to look the same on the outside with their uniform. Something as simple as everyone wearing high white socks also represents a visible piece of his core values.
Penn State head coach Jeff Tambroni is a West Genesee graduate who says the socks are as much a part of the team uniform as the school colors. He says everything associated with Messere’s various rules — whether socks or no long hair — are a rite of passage that he and other players are honored to follow.
“The high socks represented unity more than anything — a way to blend in vs. stand out,” said Tambroni, the former Cornell head coach. “It was symbolic of everyone looking and acting like, and for, each other.”
Le Moyne College head coach Dan Sheehan is another West Genesee graduate who said there was no option other than conformity under Messere. He said it’s the same thing as watching the team walk onto and off the field always wearing their helmets or onto the practice field in two lines.
“It’s just what you do,” he said.
Sheehan said he doesn’t enforce sock rules with the Dolphins. There are bigger battles to pick and he believes there are differences in dealing with high school seniors and college students. Several West Genesee players have ended up at Le Moyne. Some continue to wear the high white socks. Some wear no socks at all, a thought that produces a chuckle from Sheehan.
West Genesee’s style is something of an anathema to the sport. Lacrosse, as a new-wave sport, embraces all things cool, and that means pushing design in helmets, socks, shoes, sticks and jerseys. It’s even spawned a California company called Adrenaline that designs, markets and sells socks for lacrosse players.
Max Ritz is director of sales for Adrenaline and says company designers take their cues from skateboarding and surfing. He said lacrosse players savor being different from other sports like basketball or baseball. Injecting California cool into lacrosse is a natural combination. Lacrosse seems to invite individual expression, Ritz said, and Adrenaline’s catalogue has more than 50 different socks designs.
“It’s a chance for kids to express their individuality,” Ritz said. “Everybody wears socks. It’s an opportunity to put on something more unique than bland white.”
Yet Ritz appreciates the West Genesee look. It stands out in all its old-school glory against the modern game.
“Images like that or styles like that are identifiable and evoke a certain era,” Ritz said. “I think it’s awesome. Americana and old-school fashion is very popular.”
One school that makes no apologies for holding West Genesee up as a model is Carthage High School. Head coach Kirk Ventiquattro started the Comets program in 1989 and said the lacrosse teams at SU and West Genesee served as his templates.
From the Orange, Ventiquattro said he wanted his teams to play at a high level. From the Wildcats, he borrowed from the discipline and structure of Messere.
The Comets wear high white socks. Their most famous brood of products — the Powell brothers — all wore them. Casey Powell wore them at Syracuse.
Ventiquattro doesn’t remember whether he intentionally or subconsciously decided on his players wearing high white socks, but he tells the Comets all the time, “If it’s good enough for West Genesee, it’s good enough for us.”
Messere is old school in every way. He said players are not allowed to wear hats in school, jewelry or have their pants sag. He makes them keep their hair neat. Before the season opener against Pittsford Sutherland on March 31, it was obvious several players had just made trips to the barber. Messere smiled as he inspected various cuts.
Messere’s directive on socks extends to practice. The players can wear crew socks, though they must be white. He said he worries about things like blisters and proper shoes because it affects the performance of his team. UCLA’s legendary coach John Wooden, Messere said, taught his players how to put their socks on.
“It’s like those little things,” Messere said. “They do those little things for you, everybody conforms to the little things, they tend to work more as a team. Then the big things, like a game on the field, it leads to that discipline.
“And this (the socks) is a little something to be proud of. It’s different than anybody else.”
