Goalkeeper Fedotov, drafted into the army, plays hockey for the Navy.
Will the hockey player-sailor return to CSKA after demobilization? – June 9, 2023

He was scored a lacrosse-style goal.
Lacrosse-style goals in modern hockey are not surprising. Once he bore the name of Mikael Granlund, because it was the Finn who first performed this feint at the World Championships. It was not just anyone who suffered, but the goalkeeper of the Russian national team Konstantin Barulin. Over time, they began to score in this way at all possible levels, and for the first time in the NHL, our compatriot Andrei Svechnikov scored a lacrosse goal. The checkbox is checked, the gestalt is closed.
But what if you are a simple guy from Chebarkul, but you score lacrosse for an honored master of sports, and part-time Olympic silver medalist? It sounds paradoxical, but this is the real reality. In St. Petersburg, during the ice hockey championship of the armed forces of the Russian Federation, Evgeny Kutuzov succeeded. Playing for the team of the Central Military District, he hit the gates of the Navy team. Ivan Fedotov himself defended them.
The tournament, in which the famous Russian goalkeeper takes part, takes place at the Hockeyny stadium in the Northern capital from June 7 to 11. The Cup is played by seven teams divided into two groups: the Central Military District (TsVO), the Eastern Military District (VVO), the Western Military District (ZVO), the Airborne Forces (VDV), the Navy (Navy), the Ground Forces ( SV), Northern Fleet (SF). A total of 129 take part in the competitionmilitary personnel. Among them is the senior maters Ivan Fedotov. This is the title that the ex-goalkeeper of CSKA, who has been serving in the army for almost a year, received.
telegram channel “Beyond Leningradka”
In the very match in which Fedotov conceded a lacrosse-style goal, his team lost – 1:2. But the Navy team confidently won the first game. With a score of 12:0, the team of the Western Military District was defeated. Fedotov played to zero. And here is the review of one of the eyewitnesses of the tournament in St. Petersburg:
“Well, what can I say in the end. The resistance level was like a workout. Ten shots per match on Fedotov’s goal. Almost all of them were open with crawlers, and of course, he easily took them. Once, I didn’t fully group and the puck passed under my arm, almost stopped at the tape. He allowed one long rebound in front of him to the middle nickel, but there was no finishing move. There was one exit at an acute angle, but technically blocked everything. He went out into the corners a lot and played with a stick with the defenders. Pre-season, in fact. As a result, his team won 12:0. Sailors flew literally inspired”
In fact, this is not the first time Fedotov has taken to the ice as a soldier. Once in the army, he almost immediately got the opportunity to train. There was even talk of individual training. But in any case, Ivan regularly went on the ice, played and trained in his native St. Petersburg, along with the Navy team. And the current tournament should be the final chord of his military service for the Beijing silver medalist. The hockey player, who took the oath last summer, should be on the “citizen” in July.
What’s next for Fedotov? The NHL trip he dreamed of a year ago is cancelled. The likelihood of such a development of events would be very high if Philadelphia froze the contract of our goalkeeper. Then he would have acted in the 2023/2024 season. However, the “pilots” did not do this. A little less than a month, Ivan will formally be listed as a Flyers player, but then their paths will diverge, without really crossing. But the return to CSKA at the moment seems to be a very real scenario.
“You and I must observe the correctness of the situation. Why? Because Ivan has signed a contract in North America, and until July 1, 2023, he belongs to Philadelphia. They froze their contract, but as part of our relationship, we do not encroach on NHL contracts, and they do not encroach on our field. And we would not like to give extended information about Ivan Fedotov. I can only tell you one thing. A few months ago, I met with Fedotov, and we talked about the perspective of the issue. Ivan has a desire, and we have the opportunity for him to stay in Russia and play for CSKA for several years. There is such a direction of the question, but I want the press to present the information correctly. Now he is in the army and has a contract with the American club, but we are trying to make sure that he is in our team, ”said CSKA President Igor Esmantovich in May.
Alexander Mysyakin, Sport24
Oddly enough, neither CSKA nor Fedotov have much of a choice. Ivan is a restricted free agent in the KHL. To get NSA status at his age, you need to play 250 games, while he has only 115. So Fedotov could move to other clubs in our league only with the consent of the “army”. But Ivan, even after a year of inactivity, they themselves need. The fact is that due to the reduced limit on legionnaires, Muscovites were forced to part with Adam Reideborn, who had already found work in Switzerland. Alexander Sharychenkov is on the contract, but he is a good backup – nothing more. A year ago, the leadership of CSKA went to Ivan Prosvetov, but the young goalkeeper refused 100 million for three years and remained in Arizona. He does not intend to return to Russia this off-season either.
The main question, of course, is “Is Fedotov the same or not?” A year without hockey for a professional is a lot. It will take some time to return to the previous level. However, there are no prerequisites for Ivan to seriously roll back in his skill. Hockey players miss about the same amount due to injuries, which is much worse, because in this case they do not have the opportunity to train. Whereas Fedotov regularly went on the ice. There is an example of Vyacheslav Voinov, who missed an entire season twice in his career for various reasons. And nothing, he returned, remaining a top player by the standards of the KHL. So Fedotov, perhaps, said goodbye to the idea of conquering America, but he is quite capable of becoming a prominent player in our league again.
