What are the latest developments in college lacrosse gloves. How did a recent glove-related controversy impact a high-profile game. Why are equipment rules causing debate in the sport.
The Ohio State vs Maryland Glove Controversy
A recent top-20 matchup between Ohio State and Maryland thrust college lacrosse into the spotlight for an unexpected reason – gloves. With just over two minutes left in a tied game, officials huddled near midfield and summoned both head coaches. What followed was a heated exchange that highlighted ongoing debates about equipment rules in the sport.
Ohio State’s head coach, Nick Myers, became visibly angry, directing his frustration at Maryland’s coach John Tillman before turning to address opposing players and the crowd. The source of his ire? A ruling that Ohio State’s face-off specialist, Sean Fritz, had violated an equipment rule by wearing white gloves with gray and scarlet trim, while his teammates wore gray gloves with scarlet and white trim.
The Rule in Question
The violation centered on Rule 1, Section 21 of the NCAA lacrosse rulebook, which states:
“All players on a team shall wear gloves of the same dominant official team color unless safety reasons require a different color glove to be worn.”
As a result of this violation, Ohio State was called for illegal procedure, and Maryland was awarded possession at a crucial moment in the game.
The Debate Over Lacrosse Glove Rules
This incident has ignited a larger conversation within the college lacrosse community about the necessity and enforcement of certain equipment rules. Is it truly essential for all players on a team to wear identical gloves? How does this rule impact player performance and safety?
Face-off Specialists and Glove Preferences
It’s not uncommon for face-off specialists in college lacrosse to wear different gloves than their teammates. While the gloves worn by most Ohio State players are considered among the best innovations in modern equipment, the thumbs often fall off for face-off specialists due to the unique demands of their position. To mitigate this issue, these players often opt for gloves that are less prone to such damage.
Enforcement and Fairness
Although Fritz was technically in violation of the rule, it’s worth noting that this particular regulation is rarely enforced. Opposing coaches generally do not call for equipment checks related to glove color. In this case, Maryland’s coach Tillman claims he didn’t directly call for the check but merely mentioned it to officials.
Impact on the Game and Future Implications
Fortunately, in this instance, the violation did not directly impact the final score, as Maryland went on to win in overtime. However, the incident has raised questions about the potential for such rules to influence game outcomes and whether they serve the best interests of the sport.
Potential Rule Changes
Should the NCAA consider revising its equipment rules to allow for more flexibility, particularly for specialized positions like face-off specialists? This controversy may prompt a review of existing regulations and their impact on player performance and safety.
Innovations in Lacrosse Glove Technology
The glove controversy highlights the ongoing evolution of lacrosse equipment. Modern gloves are the result of years of research and development aimed at improving player performance and protection.
Key Features of Advanced Lacrosse Gloves
- Enhanced grip for better stick control
- Improved ventilation to reduce hand fatigue
- Strategic padding placement for optimal protection
- Flexible materials to allow for natural hand movement
- Moisture-wicking liners for comfort during extended play
As manufacturers continue to innovate, how will these advancements intersect with existing equipment regulations? The balance between performance enhancement and maintaining a level playing field remains a key consideration for the sport’s governing bodies.
The Role of Equipment in Player Safety
While the recent controversy focused on glove color, it brings attention to the broader issue of equipment safety in lacrosse. Gloves play a crucial role in protecting players’ hands from checks, slashes, and impacts during play.
Safety Standards and Certifications
Lacrosse gloves must meet specific safety standards set by organizations such as the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE). These standards ensure that gloves provide adequate protection without compromising player mobility.
Are current safety standards sufficient to protect players at all levels of the game? As the sport continues to evolve, ongoing research and development in glove design may lead to even safer equipment options.
The Economics of Lacrosse Gloves in College Sports
The controversy also sheds light on the economic aspects of lacrosse equipment in collegiate athletics. High-quality gloves can be a significant expense for both individual players and team budgets.
Cost Considerations
- Top-tier lacrosse gloves can cost upwards of $150-$200 per pair
- Teams may need to purchase multiple sets for different uniforms
- Specialized gloves for face-off specialists add to overall equipment costs
- Ongoing replacement due to wear and tear impacts annual budgets
How do these costs factor into decisions about equipment rules and enforcement? Are there potential inequities between programs with different levels of financial resources?
The Future of Lacrosse Gloves and Equipment Regulations
As the sport of lacrosse continues to grow in popularity and evolve technologically, it’s likely that equipment regulations will need to adapt as well. The recent glove controversy may serve as a catalyst for broader discussions about the future of lacrosse equipment rules.
Potential Areas for Rule Evolution
- Allowances for position-specific equipment variations
- Updated color and design guidelines that balance team uniformity with player preferences
- Integration of new materials and technologies that enhance performance and safety
- Streamlined processes for equipment checks and violation assessments
As these discussions unfold, how will the lacrosse community balance tradition with innovation? The ongoing dialogue between players, coaches, officials, and equipment manufacturers will be crucial in shaping the future of the sport.
Lessons from Other Sports
Lacrosse is not the only sport to grapple with equipment controversies and evolving regulations. Examining how other sports have handled similar issues can provide valuable insights for the lacrosse community.
Case Studies in Equipment Evolution
- Football: Ongoing updates to helmet technology and safety standards
- Hockey: Debates over visor and full-face shield requirements
- Baseball: Adjustments to bat composition rules at various levels of play
- Tennis: Racquet technology advancements and their impact on the game
What lessons can lacrosse learn from these examples? How can the sport proactively address equipment issues to enhance player safety and maintain competitive integrity?
As college lacrosse continues to grow in popularity and exposure, incidents like the recent glove controversy serve as important touchpoints for the sport’s ongoing evolution. By fostering open dialogue and embracing innovation while respecting tradition, the lacrosse community can work towards equipment regulations that serve the best interests of players, teams, and the sport as a whole.
College Lacrosse Hit By Controversy As Violation Leaves OSU Coach Irate
by
Grayson Weir
updated
As Maryland and Ohio State battled it out in a top-20 matchup on Friday night, the college lacrosse world was struck by controversy. A petty rules decision ultimately played a huge role in the outcome.
The 19th-ranked Buckeyes tied the game at 11 with just over two minutes left in regulation. Moments later, the chaos proceeded to unfold.
Ohio State face-off specialist Sean Fritz readied to take the next face-off. Meanwhile, the referees huddled near the midfield line and called for both head coaches.
Buckeyes head coach Nick Myers became increasingly angry and started to lay into Terrapins head coach John Tillman, before the latter backed away toward the sideline. Myers shifted his focus toward the opposing players and only continued to yell at Tillman and the packed crowd at his school’s new lacrosse-only stadium.

Why was he furious?
The officials, per Tillman’s suggestion, ruled that Fritz was in violation of a (ludicrous) equipment rule. He was wearing white gloves with gray and scarlet trim, as his teammates wore gray gloves with scarlet and white trim.

Ohio State was in violation of Rule 1, Section 21 of the NCAA rulebook.
All players on a team shall wear gloves of the same dominant official team color unless safety reasons require a different color glove to be worn.
— NCAA lacrosse rulebook
In turn, the Buckeyes were called for illegal procedure. Maryland was awarded possession.
It’s time to have a larger conversation within college lacrosse.
For a face-off guy to wear different gloves than the rest of his team is not particularly uncommon in college lacrosse. Although the gloves that most of Ohio State was wearing are amongst the best innovations in modern equipment, the thumbs often fall off for face-off guys.
To avoid that problem, they often wear a pair of gloves that are less susceptible to that issue.
Yes, it is technically against the rules. Fritz was in violation.
The rule is rarely, if ever, enforced. Opposing head coaches never call for equipment checks.
With that said — Tillman says that he didn’t directly call for the check. He just mentioned it to officials.

Here is his Tillman’s full explanation, as transcribed by Corey McLaughlin:

Fortunately, in this instance, the violation didn’t have a direct impact on the final score. Maryland went on to win in overtime.
The violation raises a larger conversation about rules within college lacrosse. Is there really the need for all players on the same team to wear the same color gloves?
Glovegate continues…!
Rutgers, Maryland Win OT Big Ten Battles – Lacrosse Bucket
With 7:53 remaining in regulation, Rutgers’ Justin Kim was called for an illegal body check as he hit Michigan pole Kees Van Wees high. The one-minute, non-releasable penalty helped lead to a pair of man-up goals from the Wolverines as both Kevin Pimental and Peter Thompson put in scores off Ryan Cohen feeds within 20 seconds of each other.
The pair of quick Wolverine scores pulled Michigan within one, 12-11, with 7:28 remaining in regulation. Minutes later, Michael Boehm would tie things up for the Wolverines as he took the pass from Josh Zawada, took a few steps above GLE, and stung one near-side past Kyle Mullin to make it an 11-11 game.
Nick Rowlett won the ensuing faceoff for Michigan and Peter Thompson, Ryan Cohen, Jacob Jackson, and Aidan Mullholland each got shots off during that possession. However, a blocked shot and three Kyle Mullin saves kept the Wolverines’ offense at bay and prohibited them from getting ahead.

On the other end, Michigan would come up with a huge defensive stand as time expired to force overtime. Both Shane Knobloch and Ross Scott got shots off but neither would go.
While it had been nearly all Michigan late in regulation, from coming back from down 9-4 late in the third quarter to holding firm against the Rutgers effort to help ensure overtime, Rutgers would end the contest on top.
Shane Knobloch came off a pick up top and down the left alley, where he sent home an under-handed shot to secure victory for Rutgers.

pic.twitter.com/AAziKcT3P4— Lacrosse Bucket (@LacrosseBucket) April 8, 2023
Knobloch’s game-winner was his third of the day as he, along with Brian Cameron (4G/1A), helped lead the way for the Scarlet Knights’ offense.
The other two of Knobloch’s goals came during Rutgers’ six-goal run from the 9:10 mark in the second quarter through the 4:56 mark of the third quarter where the Scarlet Knights were able to jump out to their biggest lead of the game, 9-4. Michigan had led 4-3 just before that Rutgers run.
Kyle Mullin made 11 saves to anchor the Rutgers defense. Jonathan Dugenio went 12-for-26 (46%) at the faceoff dot. He went 4-for-5 (80%) during the second quarter.
Michael Boehm (4G/1A) and Ryan Cohen (1G/4A) each had five goals to lead Michigan while Nick Rowlett went 10-for-16 (62%) at the dot. Shane Carr played the full game for the first in a month and made 14 saves.
Rutgers (8-3, 1-2 Big Ten) moves to play Maryland at home next week. Michigan (5-5, 1-2 Big Ten) moves to play Penn State at home next Saturday.
Braden Erska Lifts Maryland Past Ohio State in OT
A wild scene on the sideline ensued following Daniel Kelly’s game-tying and overtime-forcing goal with 2:09 left in regulation that brought Maryland all the way back from down 7-2 late in the second quarter and 9-5 at the half to being tied 11-11.
With the faceoff about to be set, the referees came pulled both coaches together and explained that Ohio State faceoff man Matt Fritz had the wrong color gloves on. Per NCAA rules, “All players on a team shall wear gloves of the same dominant official team color unless safety reasons require a different color glove to
be worn. Specialized goalkeeper gloves may be of any color.”
As Fritz swapped from white to gray gloves, Ohio State head coach Nick Myers was seen visibly yelling towards the Maryland bench. Myers would call for a stick check on Maryland’s Luke Wierman and all way good.
After the minutes of chaos on the sideline, play resumed with Maryland being given possession.
Jack Koras saw his shot get blocked and Ohio State went down on the other end for what would be the final possession of regulation. Coming out of a timeout, all the Buckeyes would get was a shot via Mitchell Pehlke that went wide.
Luke Wierman won faceoff to start overtime and it didn’t take long for Maryland to strike as Braden Erska put home the game-winner just 54 seconds into the extra period to secure the Maryland victory.
Maryland, who was once behind by five goals late in the second quarter, scored each of the final four goals of the game to earn its second overtime win of the season. That included blanking the Buckeyes 3-0 in the fourth quarter and holding them scoreless for the final 17-ish minute of the contest.
Luke Wierman went 19-for-26 (73%) on the day and went 9-for-10 (90%) during the second half as the Terrapins were able to dominate possession late.
Daniel Kelly led Maryland with four goals while Brian Ruppel made nine saves with a 45% save percentage in cage on the day.
Ed Shean led Ohio State with five goals while Kyle Borda had two goals and one assist.
Skylar Wahlund made eight saves in cage with a 40% save percentage to anchor the Ohio State defense.
Maryland (7-3, 2-1 Big Ten) moves to face Rutgers on the road next Saturday.Ohio State (5-6, 1-2 Big Ten) moves to play at Johns Hopkins next week.
Virginia Downs North Carolina
Connor Shellenberger was not in the lineup for the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday night at North Carolina but it didn’t matter as the Cavaliers took down their ACC rivals in a convincing, 19-12, victory.
Payton Cormier (5G/2A) led the Virginia offense with seven points while Xander Dickson (3G/1A), Thomas McConvey (2G/2A), and Griffin Schutz (1G/3A) each had four points on the day. Petey LaSalla went 17-for-33 (52%) at the dot and Matthew Nunes made 12 saves in cage with a 52% save percentage.
Virginia came out of the gates hot as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead before taking the 12-4 lead at the half. The Cavaliers added seven more in the final two frames to ensure the seven-goal victory.
A big factor in the game was the Virginia ride as they held the Tar Heels to a 15-for-19 (78%) mark. That includes one in the second quarter that led to a Cavaliers’ goal.
Logan McGovern (2G/2A) had four goals to lead the Tar Heels while Lance Tillman netted a hat trick. Collin Krieg made seven saves.
Navy Upsets Loyola
For the second week in a row, the Navy Midshipmen have earned an upset victory in Patriot League on a Friday night. Last week it was Boston U. and this week it was the Loyola Greyhounds, knocking them off 11-10.
After a first quarter that saw the two sides all knotted at 2-2, Navy would dominate the third quarter as they put home six consecutive goals to pull ahead 8-4. And while Loyola was able to make it an 8-7 game with 12:11 left in regulation thanks to a three-goal run of their own which ended with a pair of man-up scores from Joey Kamish and Will McCulloch, Navy was able to strike right back.
Max Hewitt, Jon Jarsoz, and Henry Tolker extended the Midshipmen lead to 11-7 with 6:11 left.
In the end, however, it was the Navy defense who came up heroic in the end. Loyola had put home three consecutive scores; the last of which came from the stick of Davis Lindsey with 36 seconds left. With Loyola winning the ensuing faceoff, Mustang Sally got the last shot off an Pat Ryan came up with a huge save to win the game.
The game-winning save was Ryan’s 23rd of the day as he was an incredible anchor for the Midshipmen defense.
Henry Tolker led Navy with six goals while Max Hewitt had four points off three goals and one assist.
Davis Lindsey had three goals and one assist to lead Loyola with four points.
Navy (6-6, 3-2 Patriot League) moves to Lafayette next Saturday. Loyola (6-4, 3-2 Patriot League) moves to face Boston U. on the road next Saturday.
