What is the Top Gun Fighting Clams lacrosse program. How does it focus on college placement for players. What impact has the Clams program had on lacrosse in eastern Massachusetts. How many players from the program have gone on to play college lacrosse.
The Origins and Evolution of the Top Gun Fighting Clams
The Top Gun Fighting Clams lacrosse program was founded in 2003 by Justin Walker, emerging from a series of all-star teams compiled from camps and leagues. As one of the pioneering lacrosse clubs in the region, the Clams quickly established themselves as a dominant force in player development across eastern Massachusetts.
What sets the Clams apart from other lacrosse programs? The answer lies in their innovative approach to player development and college placement. From the outset, Walker recognized the potential to make a significant impact both on and off the field. This vision led to the Clams transitioning into a year-round college placement service, focusing not only on enhancing players’ on-field performance but also on their academic achievements.
The Clams’ Unique Training Approach
How does the Clams’ training methodology differ from traditional lacrosse programs? The Clams employ a college-style training model where all players in an age group practice together. This approach offers several benefits:
- Players gain exposure to a wide range of skill levels within their age group
- Increased mobility for players to find the right on-field experience for their development
- Opportunity for all players to train alongside the best in their age group
- Meritocratic system where players earn their place in competitive tournaments
This unique training structure has contributed significantly to the program’s success in developing high-caliber players and facilitating their transition to college-level lacrosse.
The Clams’ Impact on College Lacrosse Placements
The Clams’ focus on college placement has yielded impressive results over the years. How many players have benefited from this approach? An astounding 780 players from the program have gone on to play lacrosse at the collegiate level. This remarkable achievement underscores the effectiveness of the Clams’ comprehensive approach to player development and college preparation.
What factors contribute to the Clams’ success in college placements? Several key elements come into play:
- Year-round focus on both athletic and academic performance
- Extensive network of college coaches (over 50 connected to the program)
- Personalized guidance and support throughout the college recruitment process
- Exposure to high-level competition in carefully selected events
By providing a holistic support system, the Clams have established themselves as more than just a competitive club – they’ve become a vital service for aspiring college lacrosse players.
The Littlenecks: Nurturing Young Talent
While the Fighting Clams focus on high school-level players, the program also recognizes the importance of developing younger talent. This is where the Littlenecks come into play. How does the Littlenecks program complement the Clams’ mission?
The Littlenecks cater to youth players up to eighth grade, providing a solid foundation for aspiring lacrosse athletes. This early intervention allows the program to instill fundamental skills, teamwork, and a love for the game from a young age. By offering a clear pathway from youth to high school level lacrosse, the Clams/Littlenecks program ensures a continuum of development for players at all stages of their lacrosse journey.
Off-Season Development Programs
How do the Clams and Littlenecks maintain player development during the off-season? Both programs offer robust indoor leagues and comprehensive weekly training sessions. These off-season initiatives are crucial for:
- Maintaining and improving skills year-round
- Providing consistent training environments
- Fostering team cohesion and camaraderie
- Preparing players for the competitive season ahead
The commitment to year-round development underscores the program’s dedication to maximizing each player’s potential and preparing them for success at higher levels of competition.
The Clams Elite Lacrosse League (CELL) and Littlenecks Elite Lacrosse League (LELL)
In addition to their club teams and training programs, the Clams and Littlenecks have established elite lacrosse leagues to further enhance player development. How do these leagues contribute to the overall mission of the program?
The Clams Elite Lacrosse League (CELL) for high school players and the Littlenecks Elite Lacrosse League (LELL) for youth players serve as platforms for high-level competition and skill refinement. These leagues offer several advantages:
- Exposure to diverse playing styles and strategies
- Opportunities for players to showcase their abilities
- Structured competitive environments that mirror college-level play
- Additional touchpoints for college recruiters and scouts
By creating these elite leagues, the Clams and Littlenecks provide players with valuable experience and exposure that can significantly boost their prospects for college recruitment.
3STEP Sports Acquisition: A New Chapter for the Clams
In April 2022, the Top Gun Fighting Clams and Littlenecks were acquired by 3STEP Sports, the nation’s largest club and event operator. What does this acquisition mean for the future of the Clams program?
The partnership with 3STEP Sports opens up new opportunities for the Clams and Littlenecks:
- Access to a broader network of resources and expertise
- Increased competitive options for players
- Enhanced visibility on a national scale
- Potential for cross-pollination of ideas with other successful programs
Justin Walker, the founder of the Clams, sees this acquisition as a chance to create more opportunities for players who seek them. The integration into the 3STEP Sports family, which serves more than 3.1 million athletes across eight sports, positions the Clams for continued growth and success in the evolving landscape of youth sports.
The Legacy and Future of the Fighting Clams
As one of the oldest and most storied lacrosse clubs in the nation, the Fighting Clams have left an indelible mark on the sport. How has the program’s impact extended beyond individual player success?
The Clams’ influence can be seen in several areas:
- Raising the overall standard of lacrosse in eastern Massachusetts
- Pioneering the focus on college placement within club lacrosse
- Developing a model for holistic player development
- Connecting generations of players and coaches through a shared legacy
Looking ahead, the Clams are poised to build on this strong foundation. With the backing of 3STEP Sports and a continued commitment to excellence both on and off the field, the program is well-positioned to shape the future of lacrosse for years to come.

3STEP Acquires Fighting Clams – 3Step Sports
For Immediate Release
ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST STORIED CLUBS IN THE NATION
WILMINGTON, Mass. (April 6, 2022) – 3STEP Sports, the nation’s largest and most impactful club and event operator, has added a key piece to the lacrosse division by acquiring the Top Gun Fighting Clams and Littlenecks lacrosse club, one of the oldest and most successful clubs in the country.
Based in Boston, the Clams are an elite high school program with top coaches in the area, while the Littlenecks focus on youth to eighth grade. Both programs have robust indoor leagues in the offseason, as well as comprehensive weekly trainings to maximize off-season player development. At the high school level, the Clams run the Clams Elite Lacrosse League (CELL), while the Littlenecks power the Littlenecks Elite Lacrosse League (LELL).
The Clams were founded by Justin Walker in 2003, after starting out as a group of more sporadically compiled all-star players that emerged from camps and leagues that the group also ran. Once the Clams became known as such, the program’s impact on the development of a majority of eastern Massachusetts’ best lacrosse players was immediate. Walker identified the Clams as one of the only lacrosse clubs in the region and began focusing on ways that they could make just as big of an impact off the field as they could on it. So, the Clams transitioned to a year-round college placement service, focusing on their on-field performance and academics, while also using Walker’s relationships to connect players to the vast network of college coaches.
“We were the first club to focus on college placement and that’s become our calling card,” said Walker, who is entering his 22nd season as head boys’ lacrosse coach at The Rivers School. “It was groundbreaking and we’re really proud of it. We’re much more than a very competitive club. We’re a service for kids to help them to get into college.”
Every player in an age group practices together, like a college program, and all players have the mobility needed to find the on-field experience necessary for their development. Each event selected by the directors prior to each season features a unique combination of the club’s players best suited to that event. All players have the chance to train with their age group’s very best. Most importantly, every player earns their right to be on the field at the most competitive and cherished tournaments.
Over the years, 780 kids from the program have gone on to play in college and more than 50 college coaches have been connected to Clams. Walker says joining 3STEP will give his players more competitive options and create more opportunities for those who want them.
The 3STEP reach spans 40+ states and serves more than 3.1 million athletes across eight sports through industry-leading events, nationally spanning club programs, premier media content and more. The mission of 3STEP is to be the standard of the youth sports experience and create consistency in the industry.
“The Clams and Littlenecks have been a staple in New England for a long time,” said 3STEP Founder and CEO David Geaslen. “They are known for excellence on and off the field. Bringing them in elevates our lacrosse group.”
