This conference is the oldest in the NCAA.
Its American football teams play in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) (formerly known as Division IA).
Johns Hopkins (for both male and female Cross Country) and Notre Dame (for ice hockey) are considered members associated with the Big Ten.

History
9The 0004 Conference was founded in 1896 from a meeting held at at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago between James H.
Smart, President of Purdue University, and representatives from the Universities of Chicago, Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwest, and Wisconsin in Madison. The conference is officially called the Intercollegiate Faculty Representative Conference .
It was named Big Nine in 1899 after the universities of Iowa and Indiana joined. The University of Michigan left the conference in 1908 while Ohio State joined in 1912.
The name Big Ten was adopted in 1917 after returning from the University of Michigan.
With the arrival of the University of Pennsylvania in 1990, the conference has eleven participants. However, the name does not change, but the number “11” appears on the conference logo. As for the logo, the conference uses 9 symbols1135 B1G, allowing sponsor to see under one word links BIG and 10 .
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln joined the conference in 2011 and still retains its name although it currently has twelve participants.
The same will happen when, in 2014, the Big Ten welcome the universities of Maryland and Rutgers into their midst, thus moving to fourteen members.
Johns Hopkins also joined the Big Ten in 2012 but only for men’s lacrosse competition. Women’s lacrosse teams will be merged in 2015. Notre-Dame-du-Lac University joined in 2017 for the conference, but only for men’s ice hockey teams.
Conference governs sports such as baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, American football, golf, gymnastics, track and field, indoor track and field, rowing, football (or football), softball, swimming, and diving , tennis, volleyball, wrestling and hockey (since 2013–14 season).
The member institutions of the conference are mainly large research universities with great financial resources and good academic reputation. These universities have large student populations, with 12 of the 14 members attending at least 30,000 students. The Universities of the Northwest and Nebraska-Lincoln (the only private university participating in the conference) have just under 30,000 students.
Globally, participating universities have over 520,000 students and approximately 5.7 million living alumni. The Big Ten Universities spend $10 billion annually on research. While the conference is near the University of the Century, originally located in the Midwest of the United States, it is now spreading to Nebraska in the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
Since 2007, the conference has had its own TV dedicated to its activities called Big Ten Channel .
