Who are the Bratton brothers and how did they impact college lacrosse. What led to Shamel Bratton’s dismissal from the University of Virginia lacrosse team. How did the Bratton brothers rise to prominence in the lacrosse world.
The Rise of the Bratton Brothers in Lacrosse
The Bratton brothers, Shamel and Rhamel, emerged as lacrosse prodigies from an unlikely background. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Huntington, New York, they were introduced to the sport at a young age through a chance encounter at a friend’s birthday party. Their natural talent and dedication quickly propelled them to the forefront of youth lacrosse, setting the stage for their future success.
How did the Bratton brothers first discover lacrosse? It was at a birthday party for their friends Ryan and Joe Askerberg in fourth grade. Shamel Bratton recalls, “We were outside messing around after we ate cake. At first I had no idea what they were doing, but I definitely liked it right away from the first time I saw it.” This serendipitous introduction sparked a passion that would shape their lives and careers.
Early Development and Community Support
The Brattons’ early lacrosse development was nurtured by a supportive community. They were coached by Jay Howell, father of their friend Zach Howell, and received guidance from the Askerberg and Cutrone families throughout their youth league years. This strong foundation of mentorship and teamwork played a crucial role in their rapid ascent in the sport.
- Coached by Jay Howell in their first team
- Mentored by Howell, Askerberg, and Cutrone families
- Core group of players stayed together from fourth grade through high school
Dominating High School Lacrosse
The Bratton brothers’ high school career at Huntington High School was nothing short of extraordinary. Together with their long-time teammates, they achieved an unprecedented level of success. Georgia Deren McCarthy, Huntington’s athletic director, highlighted the significance of their achievements: “If we win another state championship, it’s going to be historic. Not just for Huntington, but for high school athletics. To have this amount of kids playing at some of the top lacrosse schools in the nation, it’s not normal.”
What made the Bratton brothers’ high school career so remarkable? Their team had not lost a school lacrosse game since falling to nearby Northport in seventh grade, a streak that continued through their high school years. This level of dominance is rarely seen in high school sports, especially in a competitive region for lacrosse.
The Brattons’ Unique Dynamic
The twins’ competitive nature and passionate approach to the game set them apart from their peers. McCarthy noted their constant drive to improve and win: “It’s almost a passion. They just want to win so badly. It’s what drives them and what makes them so special.” This intense dedication, while sometimes misunderstood, was a key factor in their success on the field.
Transition to College Lacrosse
The Bratton brothers entered the college lacrosse scene with tremendous hype and expectations. They were ranked as the top two recruits by Inside Lacrosse, with Shamel at No. 1 and Rhamel at No. 2. Their decision to attend the University of Virginia (UVa) was met with great anticipation in the lacrosse community.
How did the Brattons’ recruiting rankings reflect their potential impact on college lacrosse? Their status as the top two recruits in their class was unprecedented, especially for twin brothers. This ranking not only highlighted their individual skills but also the potential for their synergy on the field to revolutionize college lacrosse.
Early Success at UVa
At UVa, Shamel Bratton quickly established himself as one of the most dynamic midfielders in college lacrosse. He became the No. 3-ranked scoring midfielder in UVa history and earned two USILA first-team All-American honors. Rhamel also made significant contributions to the team, showcasing the skills that had made the brothers so highly touted as recruits.
- Shamel: No. 3-ranked scoring midfielder in UVa history
- Two-time USILA first-team All-American
- Rhamel: Consistent contributor to UVa’s success
Challenges and Controversies
Despite their on-field success, the Bratton brothers’ college careers were not without challenges. Their senior season at UVa was marked by disciplinary issues that ultimately led to significant consequences for both players.
What events led to the disciplinary actions against the Bratton brothers? The troubles began in late February when both Shamel and Rhamel were suspended for violating team rules, causing them to miss a game against Stony Brook. Shamel faced a second suspension in April, missing the game against Maryland. These incidents hinted at underlying issues that would eventually culminate in more severe consequences.
Shamel’s Dismissal and Rhamel’s Suspension
The situation reached its climax when UVa announced Shamel Bratton’s dismissal from the men’s lacrosse team, effective immediately. Simultaneously, sources reported that Rhamel Bratton had been suspended indefinitely, also for a violation of team rules. This turn of events shocked the lacrosse community and significantly impacted UVa’s season.
- Shamel Bratton dismissed from UVa men’s lacrosse team
- Rhamel Bratton reportedly suspended indefinitely
- Both actions stemmed from violations of team rules
Impact on UVa’s Season and Legacy
The dismissal and suspension of the Bratton brothers had a profound impact on UVa’s 2011 lacrosse season. At the time of these events, Virginia held an 8-5 record, with notable wins over Cornell, North Carolina, and Stony Brook. The team was in contention for an NCAA Tournament first-round game, but the loss of two key players presented a significant challenge.
How did the Brattons’ absence affect UVa’s performance? Prior to his dismissal, Shamel was the team’s fourth-leading scorer with 20 goals and eight assists in 11 games. Rhamel was the fifth-leading scorer, contributing 17 goals and five assists in 12 games. Their absence left a substantial void in UVa’s offensive capabilities, forcing the team to adapt quickly to maintain their competitive edge.
Reflecting on the Brattons’ College Career
While the end of their college careers was marred by controversy, the Bratton brothers’ impact on college lacrosse cannot be understated. They brought a unique style of play and level of athleticism that helped elevate the sport. Their journey from Brooklyn to lacrosse stardom serves as a testament to their talent and the power of community support in nurturing young athletes.
Lessons and Legacy in Lacrosse
The story of the Bratton brothers offers valuable lessons for young athletes and the lacrosse community as a whole. Their rise to prominence demonstrates the potential for success when natural talent is combined with dedicated coaching and community support. However, their challenges at the collegiate level also highlight the importance of discipline and adherence to team rules, regardless of one’s skill level.
What can future lacrosse players learn from the Bratton brothers’ experience? The brothers’ journey underscores the need for a balanced approach to athletic development. While honing skills and pursuing on-field excellence is crucial, equal emphasis should be placed on character development, teamwork, and respect for the sport’s rules and structures.
Continuing Influence on the Sport
Despite the controversial end to their college careers, the Bratton brothers’ influence on lacrosse extends beyond their time at UVa. Their unique playing style and athleticism helped push the boundaries of what was possible on the lacrosse field, inspiring a new generation of players to innovate and excel.
- Inspired new playing styles and strategies in lacrosse
- Demonstrated the potential for athletes from non-traditional backgrounds to excel in the sport
- Sparked discussions about player development and team dynamics in college athletics
The Future of Lacrosse Post-Bratton Era
The Bratton brothers’ story has left an indelible mark on the world of lacrosse, prompting reflection on the sport’s future. Their journey from Brooklyn to lacrosse stardom opened doors for athletes from diverse backgrounds, potentially broadening the sport’s appeal and talent pool.
How might the Brattons’ legacy influence the future of lacrosse recruitment and development? Their success could lead to increased efforts to introduce lacrosse to urban areas and non-traditional lacrosse communities. Additionally, their experience may prompt college programs to place greater emphasis on holistic player development, balancing athletic excellence with personal growth and team cohesion.
Evolving Lacrosse Culture
The Bratton brothers’ story also highlights the need for ongoing discussions about team culture, player support, and the pressures faced by high-profile college athletes. Their experiences may inspire programs to develop more robust support systems and clearer guidelines for player conduct, ensuring that talented athletes have the resources and guidance needed to succeed both on and off the field.
- Increased focus on player mental health and well-being
- Development of comprehensive support systems for college athletes
- Enhanced communication between coaches, players, and administration
As lacrosse continues to grow and evolve, the legacy of the Bratton brothers serves as both an inspiration and a cautionary tale. Their journey reminds us of the sport’s potential to transform lives while also highlighting the challenges that come with success at the highest levels of collegiate athletics. The lessons learned from their experiences will likely shape the development of lacrosse players and programs for years to come, contributing to a more inclusive, supportive, and dynamic lacrosse community.
The Boy Wonders of Lacrosse
The Brattons, who will turn 18 this month, were born in Brooklyn and moved to Huntington when they were about 5. They were raised by their mother and Manuel, 26, who describes his role as a “brother/father.”
They first started playing lacrosse at a birthday party for their friends Ryan and Joe Askerberg, another set of twins, when they were in the fourth grade. “We were outside messing around after we ate cake,” Shamel Bratton said. “At first I had no idea what they were doing, but I definitely liked it right away from the first time I saw it.”
The Brattons were put on a team coached by Jay Howell, the father of their friend Zach Howell, who later went to Duke. They were coached throughout youth leagues by members of the Howell and Askerberg families and family members of another friend, Sam Cutrone, who is bound for Providence.
The core of the Huntington varsity team has been together since the fourth grade. Including their freshman year, when the Brattons played junior varsity, those players have not lost a school lacrosse game since falling to nearby Northport in the seventh grade. “If we win another state championship, it’s going to be historic,” said Georgia Deren McCarthy, Huntington’s athletic director. “Not just for Huntington, but for high school athletics. To have this amount of kids playing at some of the top lacrosse schools in the nation, it’s not normal.”
The twins often spent their 40-minute lunch period with McCarthy, whom they refer to as Mrs. Mac because of her last name and because of the macaroni and cheese she would occasionally feed them.
They sat around with a few teammates and talked about life and college and watched ESPN. McCarthy joked that the Brattons drove her crazy. She said they had particularly curious minds, constantly prodding her for answers.
Whether they are debating at lunch time or playing on the football or lacrosse fields, the brothers are always chirping at each other. McCarthy said that their yelling can be misconstrued; it is just part of their personalities, something that will probably set them apart on the lacrosse field for years to come.
“It’s almost a passion,” she said. “They just want to win so badly. It’s what drives them and what makes them so special.”
Shamel Bratton dismissed from UVa men’s lacrosse team, Rhamel reportedly suspended
Virginia has put an end to the rumors, announcing Friday afternoon that Shamel Bratton has been dismissed from the men’s lacrosse team, effective immediately.
Sources are telling Inside Lacrosse that Rhamel Bratton will not play Saturday against Penn, with The Washington Post reporting that the senior midfielder has been suspended “indefinitely” for a violation of team rules.
Shamel came into UVa riding a wave of recruiting hype as Inside Lacrosse’s No. 1 recruit, with Rhamel checking in at No. 2. The brothers appeared on IL’s 2006 Recruiting Issue cover as rising seniors at Huntington (N.Y.) High, repeating the honor, along with No. 4 recruit Adam Ghitelman and No. 5 recruit Bray Malphrus, on the 2007 Recruiting Issue cover.
Shamel Bratton’s NCAA career ends as the No. 3-ranked scoring midfielder in UVa history. He was a two-time USILA first-team All-American, but will end his career without an NCAA Championship.
This is the end of a tumultuous senior season for Shamel Bratton, who was suspended on two other occasions in 2011. In late February, Shamel and Rhamel Bratton did not make the trip back to their native Long Island with the team for the Cavs game at Stony Brook, after being suspended for violating team rules. Shamel was suspended a second time for UVa’s game against Maryland on April 2. Starsia told reporters after the Cavs’ 12-7 loss to Maryland that Shamel was suspended indefinitely. Though he did not start, the senior middie returned the following Saturday for Virginia’s 11-10 overtime win over North Carolina, scoring one goal on six shots.
After beginning the season No. 2 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll (receiving four of 15 first-place votes), Virginia sits at 8-5 on the season, with wins over Cornell, North Carolina and Stony Brook. Shamel Bratton was the Cavs’ fourth-leading scorer (20 goals, eight assists in 11 games), while Rhamel Bratton is fifth, with 17 goals and five assists in 12 games. A win Saturday would put the Cavs in the running for an NCAA Tournament first-round game.
Shamel Bratton Officially Dismissed from UVA Lacrosse Team
Yesterday morning we dropped hints on Twitter and Facebook about Shamel Bratton being dismissed from the team and Rhamel Bratton suspended indefinitely. A good amount of people guessed correctly, but we did not want to publish anything until it was made official. View the official press release below.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – High-scoring senior midfielder Shamel Bratton has been dismissed from the Virginia men’s lacrosse team for a violation of team policies.
Coach Dom Starsia made the announcement Friday on the eve of Senior Day.
“I want to wish Shamel the very best in his future endeavors,” coach Dom Starsia in the school’s statement. “He has made many contributions to the program. At the same time, there are standards of behavior within the framework of the team that we expect to be met by all of our student-athletes. Failure to do so on a consistent basis has resulted in the loss of the privilege of being a member of this team.”
Starsia also told the Daily Progress of Charlottesville that Bratton’s twin brother, Rhamel, has been suspended indefinitely, the paper reported. The school declined to confirm the report but said Starsia would likely address the issue after the Cavaliers final home game on Saturday.
The Brattons, natives of Huntington, N.Y., were among the most recruited players in lacrosse history. Shamel had 20 goals and eight assists this season; Rhamel 17 goals and five assists.
Virginia (8-5) hosts Penn in its final home game.
UPDATE:
Christian Swezey from The Washington Post reports that the Bratton brothers broke numerous team rules including violating the drinking policy. He goes on to state:
The twin brothers missed practice on Monday to attend the funeral of the mother of Maryland lacrosse player Ryan Young on Long Island. That missed practice was excused, and at least two other Virginia players were at the funeral, including senior starting goalie Adam Ghitelman and his brother Jacob, according to someone who attended. The Ghitelmans were back for practice on Tuesday, according to an individual close to the program. Shamel and Rhamel Bratton were not.
Virginia Lacrosse Dismisses Shamel Bratton
Former lacrosse star Shamel Bratton has been dismissed from the University of Virginia men’s lacrosse team, the school announced Friday.
Bratton, a 6-foot, 1-inch senior and first-team All-American midfielder last season, is considered one of the most gifted schoolboy athletes in Long Island history.
Virginia coach Dom Starsia announced the dismissal, citing a violation of team policies.
“I want to wish Shamel the very best in his future endeavors,” Starsia said. “He has made many contributions to the program. At the same time, there are standards of behavior within the framework of the team that we expect to be met by all of our student-athletes. Failure to do so on a consistent basis has resulted in the loss of the privilege of being a member of this team.”
According to The Daily Progress, twin brother Rhamel Bratton, also a senior midfielder at Virginia, has been suspended indefinitely.
Shamel Bratton was taken by the Boston Cannons in Major League Lacrosse’s January draft. But his senior season didn’t go as expected. He racked up 20 goals and eight assists, but on just 22 percent shooting.
And the Cavaliers, who were preseason No. 2, stumbled to the finish. One week after getting drubbed in a semifinal loss to rival Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, Bratton is out.
Both brothers sat out the Stony Brook game earlier this season after being suspended. Shamel also was disciplined and missed the Maryland game. A Washington Post account said Virginia teammates voted to kick Shamel Bratton off the team.
At Huntington, Shamel Bratton was a Newsday All-Long Island wide receiver in football, a two-time All-American in lacrosse and led the boys basketball team to a Suffolk title as a junior. He was part of a dynastic run in lacrosse that included three straight Long Island titles and a pair of state championships.
Shamel Bratton leaves Virginia as its all-time career points leader among midfielders with 129 points. He had 89 goals and 40 assists.
It’s unclear whether Rhamel Bratton will play again.

Don’t worry if you do a double take watching UVA’s lacrosse team. You don’t have double vision. There are four sets of brothers on the team this year, including two sets of twins. That may be unprecedented for a men’s NCAA Division I lacrosse team. Joe Finn, the archivist for US Lacrosse—the national governing body for the sport—said he has heard of as many as three brothers playing on the same college team but never four sets of brothers landing on the same squad.
So it must be a challenge for UVA coach Dom Starsia to keep them all straight on the field, right? Yes, he says, particularly when it comes to identical twins Rhamel and Shamel Bratton.
“They are so identical that it is really tricky business with those two,” Starsia says. “I wish they would wear their jersey numbers when they are walking around the hallways sometimes. It would be a help to me.”
But Starsia counts at least one difference that helps him tell the twins apart. Rhamel plays right-handed on the field, while Shamel is a lefty. Plus, Starsia had practice dealing with twins long before the Brattons showed up. The coach has identical twin daughters.
It’s no coincidence that the team includes so many brothers. Starsia said he attempts to recruit them—but only when they fit what the team needs.
“I can’t help every brother and every child of somebody that has been involved in the program,” he said, while emphasizing that he has limited space on his roster of 41 players. “But in situations where it fits for us and it works for us, I am happy to help.”
Those family bonds can bring the team closer together, Starsia says. For example, he can count on players to help get their younger siblings on the right track.
“What has never happened to me is brother and brother against me,” Starsia says. “I will go to the older one and say, ‘Look, your brother is struggling.’ And the older one helps me get that one moved along.”
The athletes say they can attract unwanted attention when their brothers run into trouble.
“If one brother messes up, the other brother is kind of caught in the mix at the same time,” says midfielder Max Pomper, whose younger brother, Brian, plays on the team. “You kind of take the heat together, so I guess it is part of the package deal.”
But Pomper and the other athletes see advantages to having their brothers on the team with them, too. Brothers, for example, know each other’s tendencies on the field, and that can give them an edge.
“You know when to get out of his way and when he is setting up a dodge or when he is looking to feed,” Rhamel Bratton says of his twin, Shamel. “Small things like that help you out on the field.”
Keeping it family-style certainly hasn’t hurt UVA’s ability to win games. The team defeated 2009 NCAA champion Syracuse on March 7 and moved into the nation’s No. 1 spot. Rhamel scored a career-high four goals in that game and was named ACC men’s lacrosse Co-Player of the Week. Starsia says Rhamel’s four goals in that Syracuse game “borders on spectacular.”
Brian Carroll—whose fraternal twin, Kevin, plays on the team—had two goals and an assist in the 11-10 win over the Orange. And in the Cavaliers’ March 16 victory over the University of Vermont Catamounts, Brian found the net an impressive five times.
“Everyone got a lot of good shots on cage,” Brian said of UVA’s win over Syracuse. “I think that was one of the best games that our offense has had so far this season.”
UVA went on to exact a measure of revenge on Cornell on March 13, convincingly beating the Big Red 12-4. Cornell stunned UVA in last year’s NCAA semifinals with a 15-6 victory.
More brothers are in the UVA team’s future. While the team is set to lose graduate student Max Pomper and fourth-years Brian and Kevin Carroll after this season, it will add first-year attackman Matt Cockerton’s younger brother, Mark, in the fall. The team is also set to welcome attackman Pat Glading, the younger brother of former UVA lacrosse standouts Bill and Danny Glading.
“For me, it always has been about family,” Starsia says. “This is a 24/7 job, and my family is part of the program and my program is part of my family. … You get so invested in these families, and when you can keep them involved in the program, it is just a joy. And at the end of the day it makes this all worthwhile.”
Brattons’ senior year takes downward turn
Twins Shamel and Rhamel Bratton were superstar lacrosse players at Huntington High School. They received scholarships to Virginia and the midfielders developed into collegiate All-Americans.
During their first three years in college, it was all about the Brattons’ skills. But in their senior year, it has been entirely about their behavior.
Coach Dom Starsia dismissed Shamel from the team Friday, saying in a statement that his failure to meet “standards of behavior” on a consistent basis resulted in the “loss of the privilege of being a member of this team.”
Later that evening, it was revealed that Rhamel had been suspended indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules. Shamel already had served two one-game suspensions for violating team rules.

“Two previous suspensions and then another break in team policy led to the dismissal of Shamel,” assistant media relations director Vincent Briedis told Newsday. He would not disclose the infractions of either player.
The regular season for Virginia (9-5) ended Saturday with an 11-2 victory over Penn, and the Cavaliers will not play again until the NCAA Tournament on May 14. Briedis said Rhamel’s status for the postseason is “at the discretion of the coaching staff.”

The Brattons’ first suspension came when Virginia visited Stony Brook on Feb. 26. Starsia said both had committed a “little violation” and would return the following week. Shamel then was suspended before a game against Maryland on April 2.
Shamel, the program’s all-time points leader for a midfielder with 129, had 20 goals and eight assists this season. Rhamel has 17 and five.
The team instituted stricter rules for player accountability after the May 2010 murder of Virginia women’s lacrosse player Yeardley Love. Former Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely has been indicted in her death. The other known suspension was Cold Spring Harbor’s Adam Ghitelman, who sat out one game for what Starsia reportedly called a “team matter.”
The twins could not be reached for comment. Lois Bratton, their mother, refused comment when reached by phone at her home in Huntington. Vernon Bratton, who identified himself as the twins’ older brother, said: “There’s nothing we are going to talk about now. They are graduating in a couple of weeks. They are not worried about whatever people speculate.”
Huntington coach Paul McDermott said he had no issues with the twins when they played for him in high school. “They were good kids, they were great kids,” he said. “It’s the college’s turn to take care of them. It’s someone else’s turn to watch them, so who’s not doing their job there? They did well with us and they obeyed my rules.”
Huntington athletic director Georgia McCarthy said she phoned Starsia “to find out what is going on, but he hasn’t gotten back to me . . . We had no problems. They did outstanding in school and there were no problems.”
Major League Lacrosse drafted both Brattons before the season. Shamel was picked in the first round by the Boston Cannons, Rhamel in the third round by the Long Island Lizards. Both are due to report after the college season ends.
“Obviously, it’s something the coaching staff and I would like to address,” Lizards general manager Casey Hilpert said. He said he would not “speculate” on what caused the suspensions.
“We drafted him thinking he could be a good player that could come in and help out,” Hilpert said of Rhamel. “But one of the most important things to us is that you have to be able to fit into our team chemistry. In this league, the talent across the board is so great that we need a team player.”
Cannons GM Kevin Barney said of Shamel, “We’re going to wait until we have all the facts.”
The dream (or fantasy) of black lacrosse — The Undefeated
Hope rarely arrives neatly packaged. On the morning of Feb. 13, it appeared as the Hampton Pirates lacrosse team, a motley crew of misfits, cast-offs and neophytes. But when they took the field against the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks, Hampton became the first historically black college to field a Division I lacrosse team in more than 30 years.
Hampton had zero recruits. It was a team of part-time players and kids who didn’t have much business playing on a D-1 level, a modern-day version of Cool Runnings.
Roberts Wesleyan beat Hampton 20-3, but the score was irrelevant. SportsCenter wasn’t going live for the pregame because it expected a nail-biter. Lacrosse Magazine didn’t put the Pirates on its cover because it was an elite program. This was about optics and otherness.
In 2016, an athletic team composed entirely of African-Americans rarely generates more than a shrug. Precedents in other sports have long been set. But for lacrosse, the scene at Hampton was jarring. This team had a black coach and a black marching band playing in the stands while black fans roared through the biting winter cold. In lacrosse, this was almost unprecedented.
Drew Jenkins grew up in affluent Montclair, New Jersey. Jenkins dreamed of playing for Syracuse, but not because he grew up watching quarterback Donovan McNabb or wanted to follow in New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony’s footsteps. Jenkins wanted to play lacrosse for the Orange, a program as successful as Kentucky Wildcats basketball or Ohio State football. It is the alma mater of Jim Brown. Yes, that Jim Brown — perhaps the greatest running back of all time and widely considered the greatest player to pick up a lacrosse stick.
Jenkins’ dream came true in 2011 when he suited up for Syracuse as a freshman. But looking back, he now calls much of his four years at Syracuse a “nightmare.”
“In practice I’d sometimes just literally sit by myself or go into drills by myself and not really talk to anybody,” said Jenkins. “Those days f—— sucked, to be quite honest.”

He describes uncomfortable moments, such as sitting in passive silence as his teammates rapped the N-word to songs they played over the speakers.
“One of the songs they loved to listen to was by YG, it’s called ‘My N—-’ and they would blast that in the locker room before games,” he said. “I didn’t want to make something of it before a game where everybody’s focused and in their groove, so I just put on my headphones and did my own thing.”
(Two white teammates of Jenkins’ agreed to be interviewed for this story and declined to go on the record when asked about the music played in the locker room.)
There’s a cruel sort of pain when one has to combat something that stings with, at best, acquiescence and, at worst, silence. Because Jenkins popped those headphones on and said nothing, it is him and not his teammates who harbors some regret, if not resentment.
“There were a lot of times where I felt like I should have said something, but didn’t,” he said. “I kick myself in the butt all the time for this, because I think about it a lot. It’s like, when you do speak up, you’re the angry black man. And when you don’t, you get walked over.”
By his junior season, Jenkins was considering a boycott after assistant coach Leland Rogers referred to an opposing player as “colored” and didn’t apologize in what Jenkins deemed a sufficient and prompt manner.
In a New York Times article that year documenting the sports’ diversity problem even as participating was growing overall, Rogers explained his usage of the derogatory term: “I didn’t mean it in a bad way. I meant it in a good way. But obviously it came across not in a positive way.”
Rogers’ confusion fit right in line with his boss, head coach John Desko.
“Sometimes I think you find it confusing if you have to call someone an Afro-American or have to describe somebody,” Desko said then. “I am sometimes myself confused on what is appropriate and what isn’t.”
Such tone-deafness is the product of operating in bubble. College lacrosse has remained lily-white as the country has gotten browner.
Of the 2,618 players in Division I men’s lacrosse in the 2014-2015 season, just 88 are black, 57 are Hispanic and 19 are Asian, according to demographics provided on the NCAA’s website. A comparison with the 2007-2008 numbers reveals minimal progress. There were 2,308 Division I men’s lacrosse players in that study, with just 46 black players, 32 Hispanics and 16 Asians.
“Somehow, some people are very satisfied with the way the sport is today in its predominant form,” said Dartmouth professor and historian Bruce Nelson. “I think it’s fair to say that they see the sport as their possession.”
That’s a jarring outcome for a sport that has Native American origins. It was played throughout parts of Canada, the Great Lakes region and the mid-Atlantic seaboard long before European settlers arrived, a game associated with war, played by warriors. European missionaries began playing the game midway through the 1600s. A full embrace came toward the end of the 19th century and the establishment of the U.S. National Amateur Lacrosse Association in 1879. The first tournament was held in 1881. Harvard beat Princeton 3-0 in the championship.
When Jovan Miller played lacrosse at Syracuse, he was good enough to garner All-American status twice — the first African-American to earn the honor at the university since Jim Brown.
By 2012, Miller was playing for the Charlotte Hounds, one of eight teams in Major League Lacrosse. The MLL featured just three black players at the time. In October 2012, after the season had ended, Miller found out on Twitter about the hashtag “Ninjaplease,” a slogan being used by Warrior, MLL’s biggest sponsor and the maker of most of Miller’s gear.
A goalie at St. Andrew’s University tweeted Miller asking if he should be offended by the slogan. Miller replied simply: “Be offended.”
“@laxlover3838: Paul Rabil #ninjaplease ???? Idk if I should offended or not ??? @ChazzWoodson @KyleHarrison18” be offended
— Jovan Miller (@JoviNation23) October 26, 2012
Miller was infuriated. He threatened to retire from the MLL. Less than a month later, Warrior relented and pulled “Ninja, please” completely, along with an apology. It didn’t matter.
Said Miller in 2012 to Lacrosse Magazine: “I feel like I’m not supposed to fit in here,” he said. “What is acceptable? Look at lacrosse right now. Do I have long floppy hair? No I don’t. Do I [put] lacrosse pinnies on my futon? No I don’t. Do I wear mid-calves with boat shoes? No I don’t. That’s what’s acceptable.”
An MLL All-Star in 2012, Miller’s career fell off the tracks in 2013. He played in just 5 of 14 games. He was told not to dress for games.
Miller was traded at the end of the season and didn’t play at all in 2014. He went to study sports management at Loughborough University in Great Britain and was floored when he was picked in the MLL’s supplemental draft in 2015. Miller currently plays for the Florida Launch of the MLL and said the ordeal has left him frustrated. He said he doesn’t share a lot of information with people because of the questions he gets hit with.

“Anytime we bring up something like being a black lacrosse player, it comes with ‘Well, why does it matter if he’s black or white?’ But that’s coming from a lot of people who have never been a minority on a team.”
For years, lacrosse branded itself as the fastest growing sport in America, and like any burgeoning movement, this one also had a slogan: “Grow The Game.”
Enthusiasts and real-deal participants were concentrated in the mid-Atlantic, Long Island and central New York for a long time. But gradually the sport extended its wingspan.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, from 2009 to 2014, 551 schools added boys’ programs and 556 schools added girls’ programs. That resulted in a growth rate of 27.8 percent for boys’ lacrosse and 31.2 percent for girls’ lacrosse. No other sport had a growth rate above 10 percent. A 2015 study found lacrosse to be the fastest growing NCAA sport during the last 15 years. Men’s lacrosse grew 95 percent from 2000-2015. In that span, 147 schools across all NCAA divisions added lacrosse as a varsity sport. In Division I men’s lacrosse, this decade has seen Notre Dame emerge as a perennial national power. Denver and Ohio have blossomed into hotbeds. Marquette and Michigan launched Division I programs and 2015 gave birth to Big Ten lacrosse.
Cleveland State begins play as a D-1 program next spring. And while the Northeast and mid-Atlantic continue to supply the D-1 ranks, programs have unearthed elite talent from Florida, Georgia, Texas, Arizona, California, Washington and Colorado. In 2012, Peter Baum, an Oregon native, won the Tewaaraton Award, the Heisman Trophy of college lacrosse.
In so many ways, lacrosse has “grown the game.” Cartographically, lacrosse has never been better represented. But demographically? It’s still failing.
It was a chilly day in Hampton, Virginia, and Pirates coach Lloyd Carter, sitting in front of live ESPN cameras, was asked how he felt.
“There’s only one word — ‘blessed,’ ” he said, turning to an amped gathering of fans. “I can say a million words, but it all comes back to, ‘blessed.’ ”
Decades ago, Carter was a varsity lacrosse player for Morgan State, the last HBCU to field an NCAA-level lacrosse team before Hampton (Morgan State competed in Division II, but regularly played Division I schools). Morgan’s Bears were legit. Players such as Dave Raymond, Joe Fowlkes and Wayne Jackson played at elite levels. The program was an ideal landing spot for black players ignored by programs that fielded what seemed to be exclusively white players.
Carter was a member of one of the last iterations of the Morgan squads. After college, he spent his career moving up the ranks of the Baltimore City Fire Department. Then, a little more than five years ago, he received a call from Verina Crawford. Her son, Michael, had been trying to organize a club-level lacrosse team at Hampton to demonstrate the school was about “embracing change.” Michael Crawford was a multisport participant all his life and wanted to bring the sport that Jim Brown once dominated to his campus. He died of cardiac arrest months later at age 21.

Verina Crawford told Carter about the movement to execute her son’s mission to create a lacrosse team and about how he’d have to make four-hour round-trips. He said he was driven by giving young black men the opportunity to play a sport he loved.
“I had a goalie who had played one year of high school. To me that means, he probably was on the team [but] rarely got in the game and probably hardly [played in] practice, but he was our star goalie,” said Carter.
Where will Hampton’s ambition lead? Will the idea of playing on an HBCU lacrosse team lead to more participation in communities lacrosse wishes to expand into? Can it transcend the current boundaries of race and class?
Said Carter: “My players are trying to see it [the importance of the history], but they really won’t see it until 10, 15 years later.”
Memorial Day weekend is unquestionably the sport’s biggest stage. It’s NCAA championship weekend in Philadelphia (Maryland, Brown, North Carolina and Loyola make up the field). It is, however, far from a showcase for diversity. Of the 175 players who call themselves Terrapins, Bears, Tar Heels, and Greyhounds, only seven are black. North Carolina doesn’t have a single black player on its roster.
There are, however, grassroots efforts to “grow the game.” Harlem Lacrosse, designed to teach the game in low-income and urban areas, operates eight programs in New York City and Baltimore, serving more than 340 boys and girls. They plan to expand to Boston this fall and to Philadelphia in 2017.
Brooklyn Lacrosse holds similar aspirations. It aims to make lacrosse “accessible to all children, despite the various barriers of entry that exist in urban areas such as cost, perception, and logistics.”
Similar organizations such as Blax Lax (Baltimore), Charm City Lax (Baltimore), City Lax (Denver) and OWLS (Chicago) have the same goals. The sport’s governing body, US Lacrosse, advises many of these organizations under the umbrella of the Urban Lacrosse Association.
But Hampton is where the biggest hopes reside.
“The day that Hampton makes the NCAA tournament will be one of the biggest days college lacrosse will see,” said ESPN lacrosse analyst Paul Carcaterra.

ESPN’s lead lacrosse analyst Quint Kessenich said that moment would transcend the sport.
“It would be the equivalent to Texas Western in 1966 in men’s college basketball.”
However, that dream is far in the distance. For now, the journey to diversify the game is only a few steps from genesis. But for the first time in a long time, there’s hope that the sojourn won’t be lonely.

Canada – What a tourist needs to know, travel guide
Other popular national parks in Canada
Along with Banff , many other protected natural areas are of great interest to tourists. Mentioned above is Canada’s largest national park, Wood Buffalo , which is also the second largest in the world after Greenland National Park, which covers an area of 972,000 square meters. km. Wood Buffalo is located in Alberta and is home to North America’s largest herd of woodland bison. It was they who gave the park its name: “wood buffalo” is translated as “forest bison”. Back in 1983, the park was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. On the territory, along with the bison, many species of animals live: black bears (baribals), Canadian lynxes, blue hares, Canadian cranes, elks and others. In 2007, the world’s largest beaver dam was discovered here – about 850 m long.
Of great interest is also Jasper – the largest Canadian national park in the Rocky Mountains. Its area is 10,878 sq. km, it is rich in glaciers, hot springs, lakes and waterfalls. The famous Athabasca glacier is also located here. The Jasper Conservation Area is home to grizzlies and black bears, black-tailed and white-tailed deer, wapiti and caribou, bighorn goats and bighorn sheep, gray wolves and coyotes, wolverines and cougars, pikas and gray marmots.

From the Cree languages, the name of the waterfall is translated as “He is magnificent”. Jasper and Yoho were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984.
Very interesting from a geological point of view is Kootenay , included in the UNESCO List in the same year – 1984. This park attracts with picturesque canyons and limestone caves, hot and cold mineral springs, crystal lakes and waterfalls.Kootenay is also located in the Rocky Mountains, but already in the province of British Columbia, its territory occupies only 1,406 square meters. km.
Canada’s northernmost national park is Kuttinirpaak in the province of Nunavut. This is the second largest protected natural zone in the country – it occupies 37,775 sq. km. About 36% of the territory is covered with glaciers. The park is home to small populations of Arctic white hares, musk oxen, Ellesmere wolves, lemmings, and Piri caribou. In summer, different species of birds fly here to nest, among them the Icelandic sandpiper, the gyrfalcon, the long-tailed skua, the web-toed tie.
Popular with camping enthusiasts is the National Park Reservation Pacific Rim . It is quite small – 511 sq. km, but there are 94 campgrounds on its territory. There are many interesting hiking trails for tourists through rainforests and swamps. Also of interest are the numerous small islands that can be reached only by kayak. Located in Pacific Rim on the coast of British Columbia.
Another famous reservation deserves no less attention – Nahanni .It is located in the Dehcho region of the Northwest Territories of Canada. The park was founded in 1972, initially its territory occupied only 4,766 sq. km, but today the area is more than 30,000 square meters. km. There are many attractions on the territory. One of the main is the South Nahanni River, over which four picturesque canyons rise. The river forms the famous Virginia Falls, its height, 96 m, is about twice the height of Niagara Falls. In 1978, UNESCO inscribed Nahanni Park on the World Heritage List.
Attractions
The second largest country in the world meets thousands of sights, both natural and man-made. The well-known electronic encyclopedia identifies about 40 categories of places that attract attention, each consisting of subcategories and so on. Therefore, highlighting the main attractions of Canada is a very difficult task. But still, we will try to cope with it, focusing on all sorts of thematic sites, atlases and geography textbooks. Below is a list of 10 beautiful places in the maple country, and they are, of course, not listed by rank – the route is laid from west to east.
Pacific Rim National Park
It is located in British Columbia on the west coast of Vancouver Island, covers 511 sq. km of land and ocean. The park allows you to see rocks, sandy beaches, rainforests (who said that there are no hot spots in Canada?). It is home to one of the world’s best hiking trails – the 75 km West Coast Trail. It is usually open from March to October. The trail appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, for a long time it was used to help shipwrecked sailors. However, on the lands where it was laid, people walked 4,000 years ago. The trail allows you to experience the culture of the Nitinat people and other Aboriginal people of Canada. On average, the hike lasts 5-7 days.
Whistler Ski Resort
Whistler is a city in British Columbia with a population of less than 10 thousand people, but about 2 million tourists come here annually. It’s just one of the main ski resorts in the world. It may be recalled that during the 2010 Winter Olympics, Whistler hosted a variety of tobogganing and alpine skiing events. This place is famous for its restaurants, spas, shops. Whistler Blackcomb is the main resort of the city, and in many respects the main resort of the whole of North America. It provides for about 3,400 hectares of ski area.
Banff National Park
In the famous Rocky Mountains, there are 5 Canadian national parks, and Banff was the first to appear. Moreover, this is the country’s first national park – founded in 1885. It is located in the province of Alberta, covers 6 641 sq.km, and they annually capture the spirit of about 4 million tourists. The park is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Here you can fish, ski, play golf, go hiking or enjoy the food and spa treatments in Banff, the commercial heart of the park.
CN Tower Toronto
The fastest way to get to know Toronto, the largest city in Ontario and the country in general, is to climb the CN Tower. True, the city will seem like a toy, since the height of this television tower with a spire is 553.3 m, and its top floor is at 446.5 m.In 1976, she broke the record of the Ostankino Tower, being 13 meters higher, and retained its leadership position until 2010, when the 828-meter Burj Khalifa skyscraper was opened in Dubai. The CN Tower receives about 2 million visitors annually, and long queues are avoided thanks to elevators speeding up to 22 km / h, and they move along glass-lined shafts.
Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls is located on the border of the United States and Canada – between the state of New York and the province of Ontario. There are amazing views from any coast of Niagara, but most prefer to be on the Canadian side. It is the most powerful waterfall in North America: its average flow per second is 2,400 cubic meters of water, and its height is 51 m. In fact, Niagara Falls includes as many as three waterfalls: Canadian, American and Bridal Veil. More than 20 million people look at this natural miracle every year, the main flow of tourists is in the summer. Thanks to the spotlights, you can see the attraction even late in the evening.

A few days ago
Portuguese clairvoyant Horatio Villegas named the start date of the Third World War
war.He told the British media that he had a prophetic dream. It contains “balls
from the fire fell from heaven to earth, and people ran and tried to hide from
destruction. “According to the psychic, these balls symbolized nuclear
rockets that attack cities around the world.
Clairvoyant
I am sure: the Third World War will begin on May 13, 2017, on the 100th anniversary
the last apparition of the Virgin Mary in the Portuguese city of Fatima. And will end
fighting on October 13, but “it will be too late for many.”
Villegas warned that entire nations were threatened with destruction.
By
according to the psychic, all his predictions are correct. In 2015, he stated that Donald
Trump will become the US president who will bring war to the world. Predicted by Villegas
and the fact that the American leader will attack Syria, and eventually spoil relations with
Russia, North Korea and China.
By
other predictions were made about the Third World War earlier. Bulgarian
the clairvoyant Vanga said that the war would begin after the fall of Syria.
Matrona of Moscow also left her prophecy about a possible world war,
but, according to her, a catastrophe will not happen – Russia will act as a peacemaker, which
will not allow unleashing a big war.
World wars, in which many states and a colossal number of people are involved, to this day excite the thought of civilians. The political mood becomes more and more tense, every now and then there are all sorts of conflicts between countries. Of course, people do not leave the thought that the beginning of the Third World War is not far off. And such worries are not groundless. History shows us many examples when a war began because of one, at first glance, a minor conflict or through the fault of the state, which wanted to gain more power.Let’s get acquainted with the opinion of experts, as well as on this issue.
What the experts say
It is rather difficult to understand the political actions of various countries today, as well as to understand the general picture of the interaction of foreign states.
Many of them are economic and trading partners, have a close relationship. Other states are in constant confrontation with each other. In order to at least a little comprehend the situation in the world today, it is necessary to turn to the opinion of experts in this matter.
If you ask the experts the question of whether there will be a Third World War, then you can hardly wait for a definite answer. There are many opinions. However, the world’s leading experts have quite a few points of contact in their vision of the situation today. Almost all of them believe that the situation is extremely tense now. The constant military conflicts of countries, the prolonged division of spheres of influence, the desire of the subjects for political and economic independence, as well as the very precarious financial condition of many states, undermine the general calm.In addition, in recent years, more and more news has been appearing about popular discontent and even the revolutionary mood of the people. This is also a negative factor in the issue of the Third World War.
Experts argue that such a massive confrontation is currently not beneficial to any of the countries. However, the behavior of individual states still worries specialists. America is a prime example.
The United States and the influence of the state on the general political situation in the world
Today, the question of whether there will be a Third World War is increasingly disturbing the minds of representatives of power structures. And there are quite understandable reasons for this. Recently, the most economically developed state has already been mentioned several times in the context when it comes to military conflicts in other countries. It is believed that the United States has taken on the role of sponsor of many wars. Of course, in this case, the country is interested in the end result, which should be beneficial for America. But it is not worth considering this state exclusively in the role of the aggressor. In fact, the relationship between countries is much more complex than civilians imagine. And no one can place positive and negative accents on the political map of the world with complete confidence. With all this, the fact of economic and political intervention by America has been recorded more than once. And this participation of the country in conflicts of other states was not always approved.
As for the direct influence of the United States and its authority, in fact, this country has not such an enviable position in terms of financial stability. the country is too large to speak of the complete economic independence of America. Therefore, any provocation by the United States can be stopped at the initiative of its trading partners. In particular, we are talking about China.
Ukrainian conflict
Today the whole world is following the development of the situation in Europe. We are talking about the Ukrainian conflict that broke out not so long ago. And right away, many citizens had a very urgent question about whether the Third World War could break out in the near future. In a matter of weeks, Ukraine has turned from a peaceful state into a real training ground for civil confrontation.Perhaps the predictions are already coming true, the Third World War is already beginning?
To make at least some clarity, it is necessary to consider the causes of the conflict between the citizens of one country, which, in turn, led to serious unrest around the world. Ukraine was invited to join the European Union. However, the conditions for the country were offered very inconvenient, if not worse. The borders would remain closed. And practice shows that the initial introduction of a single currency (euro) immediately leads to a massive rise in prices for all goods in the country.
Many experts support the opinion that in such a case Ukraine would find itself in the European Union solely as a source of cheap labor. However, not all citizens were in solidarity with this opinion. The conflict flared up due to the fact that a large number of people did not support the President in his decision to refuse to join the European Union. Citizens believed that this was a real betrayal of Ukraine and a waste of huge opportunities in the future. The confrontation became widespread and soon armed.
So, will there be a Third World War because of the unrest in Ukraine? Indeed, many countries were involved in the conflict. Russia, as a long-time ally and partner of Ukraine, as well as a state located in close proximity to this country, took an active part in attempts to eliminate the confrontation peacefully. However, these actions were perceived by many European states and the United States as illegal. At the same time, there are a huge number of Russian citizens on the territory of Ukraine, who, in any case, must be protected. In general, we have a massive conflict that has already reached the global level. And if one of the countries decides to defend its interests through military action, armed confrontation, alas, it will not be possible to avoid.
Harbingers of the Third World War
If we consider the world relations of states in general in recent years, we can note a fairly large number of “weak” points. It is they who can ultimately lead to much more serious consequences. The third world war can get an impetus for its development even in the form of a small confrontation between the citizens of one or several states.Today, according to leading political experts, the main harbingers are considered the extremely tense situation in Ukraine, possible sanctions against the Russian Federation from Europe and America, as well as the dissatisfaction of other fairly large powers with nuclear weapons and impressive military power. Such drastic negative changes in relations between countries cannot but have a negative impact on trade and world markets. As a result, the economy and currency will suffer.Traditional trade routes will be undermined. As a consequence – the weakening of some countries and the strengthening of the positions of others. Such inequality is most often the reason for the equalization of positions at the expense of war.
Prophecies of Vanga
The third world war, the year of the beginning of which, according to experts, may already be close, at one time was mentioned in the prophecies of various clairvoyants. A striking example is the world-famous Vanga. Scientists have found that her predictions regarding the world future come true with an accuracy of 80%.However, the rest, most likely, simply could not be correctly deciphered. After all, all her prophecies are rather vague and consist of veiled images. At the same time, the main high-profile events of the 20th and 21st centuries are clearly traced in them.
To be convinced of the truthfulness of the words of this amazing woman, you need to read her predictions several times. The third world war is touched upon in them quite often. She spoke about the “fall of Syria”, the confrontation between Muslims in Europe, as well as mass bloodshed. However, there is hope for a positive outcome. Vanga in her predictions mentioned a special “Teaching of the White Brotherhood”, which will come from Russia. From that moment on, the world, she said, will begin to recover.
The third world war: the predictions of Nostradamus
Not only Vanga spoke about the upcoming bloody confrontations between countries. There are no less accurate. He also quite clearly saw in his time a lot of modern events that have already taken place. Therefore, many scientists and experts attach great importance to the prophecies of Nostradamus.
And again the dreamer speaks in his quatrains about the aggression on the part of the Muslims. According to him, chaos will begin in the West (you can take it as Europe). The rulers will take flight. It is quite possible that we are talking about an armed invasion of Eastern countries into Europe. Nostradamus spoke of the Third World War as an inevitable phenomenon. And many believe his words.
As Mohammed said
Prophecies about the Third World War can be found in the records of many clairvoyants.Mohammed predicted a real Apocalypse. According to him, the Third World War will certainly cover modern humanity. Mohammed called the spread of human vices, ignorance, lack of knowledge, free use of drugs and “mind-stupefying” drinks, murder, and the breaking of family ties as clear signs of a bloody battle. As can be seen from modern society, all these precursors already exist. The widespread spread of human cruelty, indifference, greed will invariably, according to the prophet, lead to another large-scale war.
From whom you should expect aggression
There are several opinions on this matter. Someone is sure that the greatest danger is China because of the colossal number of citizens, military forces, as well as the incredible patriotism that has survived to this day. Many experts draw a quite understandable analogy between this country and the USSR. In both cases, the powerful
came out on top. In connection with the latest events in the world, the United States also began to act as an aggressor. Since this state constantly intervenes in all world conflicts, and also regularly uses weapons to resolve certain issues, America is considered to be one of the main threats.
Countries in which Islam are professed are considered no less dangerous. Muslims have always been quite a conflict people. It is from there that bloody terrorist attacks in developed countries and suicide bombers originate. It is not excluded that the prophecies about the Third World War, based on the massive invasion of Muslims in the states of Europe, may well come true.
What the Third World War can lead to
Today, weapons have reached a new level. Nuclear bombs appeared.People destroy each other with great zeal. If the Third World War breaks out in the near future, then its consequences will be truly catastrophic. Chances are, one or more will take advantage of them and deliver fatal blows. In this case, an incredible number of civilians will die. The earth will be contaminated with radiation. Degradation and inevitable destruction awaits humanity.
Lessons from the past
As you can see from history, many wars began with small conflicts. There was also a revolutionary attitude of the civilian population of countries, massive people’s discontent with the situation that had arisen, and economic global shocks. Today, the relationship between countries is very closely related to many complex factors. Based on the sad experience of past generations, the following conclusion can be drawn. In no case should radical political movements be allowed to spread. As Nostradamus said, the Third World War will turn out to be the very Apocalypse that people have been waiting for throughout almost their entire history. Therefore, all countries need to carefully monitor all movements based on hatred, the superiority of one nation over others. Otherwise, there is a risk of repeating the mistakes of the past.
Is it possible to avoid bloodshed
Many experts say that there is a very real chance to prevent another war. To do this, it is necessary to stabilize the economic condition of the most financially unstable states, localize internal conflicts in countries and prevent outside interference. In addition, a tremendous effort will be required to eliminate the root cause of confrontation in the modern world – racial hatred.
The third world war: Russia and its role
An increasing number of specialists pay special attention to the Russian Federation against the background of the current difficult situation in the world. Russia is one of the largest exporters of natural resources, and has significant political and economic influence over other countries. It is quite logical that many states are afraid of the Russian Federation and see it as a potential threat. However, the Russian government does not carry out any political provocations. Most likely, the country has to mostly defend itself and defend its own interests. The third world war, the prophecies of which often mention Russia as one of the main participants in the conflict, may well begin in the Russian Federation itself. Therefore, the government of the country needs to carefully weigh its every decision and action. It is quite possible that the strengthening of the state will cause a negative reaction from Europe and America, which will lead to war.
Actions of Heads of State
Will there be a Third World War? Perhaps, none of the current rulers can give a concrete answer to this question today. After all, the situation changes every day. It is extremely difficult to predict anything. Accurate and timely decisions made by the heads of various states play a huge role in this issue. In particular, we are talking about the countries of Europe, America, China, Russia. It is they who, according to experts, occupy the leading positions when it comes to the risk of military confrontation.Nostradamus spoke of the Third World War as an armed conflict between several countries of the East and West. If you interpret these words in a modern way, it turns out that just one careless action on the part of the head of a large state – and bloodshed cannot be avoided.
The recently forgotten threat of a third world war is again a topic of general discussion. A week ago, US and Russian military vehicles nearly collided in Syria. NATO is building up its military capabilities on the border with our country and is not going to give up its hostile rhetoric. What are the scenarios for a possible military conflict? It is necessary to think about this in order to prevent the not entirely adequate actions of our “Western partners”, who have long since turned back into “probable adversaries”.
Military analyst Valentin Vasilescu from Romania, a country at the forefront of NATO’s anti-Russian front, is trying to answer this question based on the tactics characteristic of recent US military operations and the characteristics of the weapons used. On the pages of the English-language analytical center “Katehon”, he claims that the aggression of the United States and its allies against Russia is not at all an excluded scenario. The United States is obliged at any cost to stop Russia, which by its actions in Syria, and before that in Crimea and Ukraine, is changing the American-centric status quo. In order to maintain hegemony, the Americans are heading for a big war.
The main direction of the strike
According to Vasilescu, the main direction, where the US strike can be expected, is the western one. “The United States is not planning a landing in the Russian Far East; instead, like Napoleon and Hitler, the United States will seek to occupy the strategically important capital of the country, Moscow,” he summarizes.According to him, the goal of Euromaidan was initially to create a convenient base for aggression against Russia. Lugansk, the analyst notes, is located just 600 kilometers from Moscow. However, the plan of American aggression was thwarted after the reunification of Russia with Crimea and the creation of the people’s republics in eastern Ukraine.
After that, the plan of American aggression was revised, and the Baltic direction was chosen as a new zone of aggression. From the Latvian border to Moscow – all the same 600 kilometers, and to St. Petersburg and even closer. In order for the local population not to be outraged by the fact that their countries will soon be turned into a springboard for aggression, the American and local media and generals spoke in unison that the Baltic and Northern European countries are in danger of attack from Russia. In Norway, they even launched a series about the future Russian occupation.
In addition, the United States increased pressure on Sweden and Finland. They are not yet joining NATO, but US troops have already deployed. Moreover, in May 2016, the northern quintet – a meeting of the foreign ministers of Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland – announced that an urgent need to neutralize the Russian threat. As a way out, they proposed defense cooperation between the Swedish-Finnish neutrals and NATO.
According to Valentin Vasilescu, the main task of NATO is to inflict a quick defeat on Russia, which will force the country’s political system to collapse. Pro-American agents of influence have been overthrown, Vladimir Putin, and the war can be considered won. Therefore, the United States will act according to Hitler’s logic, betting on blitzkrieg tactics. If Russia is defeated, NATO will occupy territories up to the line of St. Petersburg – Veliky Novgorod – Kaluga – Tver and Volgograd.
At the same time, as the expert notes, due to the rapid modernization of the Chinese army, which will pose a serious threat to the United States in the Pacific theater of operations, the Pentagon will not be able to throw all the necessary forces and means against Russia. At least a third of all US armed forces will have to concentrate in the Pacific region, awaiting a possible strike from the now allied China of Russia.
Probable time of strike
According to a military analyst, the United States has a chance of success only if it invades before 2018.After 2018, the chances of success will significantly decrease, since after the completion of the rearmament of the Russian army begun under Sergei Shoigu, the Pentagon will lose its technological advantage in conventional weapons. And in order to win the war, you will have to resort to nuclear weapons – and this is a step towards mutual nuclear destruction.
War in the air – colossal losses
The main targets of the first wave of air raids will be Russian airfields and air defense systems. Russia is armed with high-quality fighters and mobile anti-aircraft systems capable of detecting and destroying even a fifth-generation American aircraft. Therefore, even with the support of NATO allies, the US military will not be able to achieve air superiority. With great effort, they can achieve temporary air superiority in some areas on the Russian border with a depth of 300 kilometers. In order to secure flights in areas where Russian air defense systems are actively operating, the Americans will be forced to throw at least 220 aircraft into the first wave of attack (including 15 B-2 bombers, 160 – F-22A and 45 – F-35). The B-2 can carry 16 GBU-31 laser-guided bombs (900 kg), 36 GBU-87 cluster bombs (430 kg) or 80 GBU-38 bombs (200 kg).The F-22A aircraft can carry 2 JDAM bombs (450 kg) or 8 bombs of 110 kg each.
A serious obstacle for the Americans will be the fact that the AGM-88E missiles, designed to combat air defense systems with a range of 160 kilometers, are too large to be loaded inside the F-22A and F-35s (4.1 m long and 1 m in height). If they are mounted on pylons, the vaunted “invisibility” of these aircraft will suffer. Previously, this problem did not arise, since in the past 20 years the United States has fought wars exclusively against opponents with outdated air defense systems.
As for the F-22A, they will be mostly shot down. As the expert notes, the Pentagon reports indicate that the US military was satisfied with the results of the use of the F-117 (the first fifth-generation aircraft in the US Air Force) in Kuwait and Yugoslavia and intended to replace outdated models with new devices. The Pentagon planned to order 750 F-22As to replace the F-16s. However, Russia has developed a 96L6E radar capable of detecting American stealths. As a result, the Pentagon reduced the order to 339 F-22A aircraft. While the Americans were developing and testing these aircraft, Russia acquired S-400 complexes capable of detecting these aircraft. As a result, the US Air Force received only 187 F-22A aircraft.
In order to complicate the task of Russian air defense systems, the United States will fire more than 500-800 cruise missiles from ships and submarines in the Baltic Sea. Russian aircraft, primarily MiG-31 fighters, and air defense systems will be able to neutralize most of these missiles, the expert is sure, but this is not all that the Americans can use.
At the same time, the F-18, F-15E, B-52 and B-1B planes, being at a safe distance from the Russian border and not entering the S-400 range, will strike with AGM- mini-cruise missiles. 154 or AGM-158, the range of which is up to 1000 kilometers. They can hit ships of the Russian Baltic Fleet and missile batteries of the Iskander and Tochka complexes. If successful, the Americans will be able to neutralize 30 percent of the Russian radar network, 30 percent of the S-300 and S-400 battalions deployed between Moscow and the Baltic countries, and 40 percent of the components of the automated reconnaissance, control, communications and target designation system, in addition, airfields will be damaged. the departure of more than 200 aircraft and helicopters will be blocked.
However, the expected losses of the Americans and their allies will amount to 60-70 percent of the aircraft and cruise missiles that will enter Russian airspace during the first wave of air raids and strikes.
But what will be the biggest obstacle to NATO air supremacy? According to the expert, these are effective means of electronic warfare.
We are talking about the Krasukha-4 complexes of the SIGINT and COMINT types. These systems can effectively wage electronic warfare against American tracking satellites Lacrosse and Onyx, ground and airborne radars (AWACS), including those deployed on RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft and Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk drones.
According to the expert, the electronic warfare systems in service with the Russian troops can effectively jam American bombs and missiles with laser, infrared and GPS guidance.
Also, Russia can create two zones on the border with the Baltic countries in the regions of St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad, impenetrable for enemy aircraft, combining air defense systems (S-400, Tor-M2 and Pantsir-2M) and electronic warfare.
Currently, 8 S-400 battalions are protecting the skies around the Russian capital, one is in Syria. In total, the Russian armed forces have 20-25 S-400 battalions. Some of them can be deployed to the western border along with 130 S-300 battalions, which can be upgraded and equipped with 96L6E radar, effectively detecting NATO stealth. An even more advanced air defense system, the S-500, is currently being tested, which will presumably go into service in 2017.
The author is sure that due to Russia’s advantage in electronic warfare means, NATO will not be able to achieve an advantage in electronic warfare. As a result, in the first wave of attacks against Russia, NATO troops will strike decoys in 60-70 percent of cases. Due to the high losses in the first wave of air strikes and the inability to achieve air superiority, the NATO Air Force will suffer high losses. The American group of 5,000 planes will be joined by their allies. But they will not be able to provide more than 1,500 aircraft.
War at sea
At sea, the Pentagon can deploy up to 8 aircraft carriers, 8 helicopter carriers, several dozen landing craft, missile carriers, destroyers and submarines. These forces can be joined by two Italian aircraft carriers and one aircraft carrier each from Spain and France. Russian anti-ship defense means – Kh-101 and NK Kalibr cruise missiles move at subsonic speed and can be neutralized at the initial stage of approach. It will be more difficult for NATO to cope with the P-800 Onyx and P-500 Basalt missiles. And finally, in 2018, the Russian fleet will enter service with the “aircraft carrier killer” – the 3M22 “Zircon” missile, capable of traveling at hypersonic speed at low altitudes.”The United States will not be able to oppose anything to this means,” the expert concludes.
Superiority in armored vehicles
Currently in service with the Russian army, the samples of armored vehicles – T-90 and T-80 tanks and modernized versions of T-72 tanks, Vasilescu notes, correspond to NATO counterparts. According to the expert, only the BMP-2 and BMP-3 are inferior to the American M-2 Bradley.
However, the new T-14 Armata Tank has no analogues in the world. In all respects, it surpasses the German Leopard-2, the American M1A2 Abrams, the French AMX 56 Leclerc, and the British Challenger 2.The same can be said about the T-15 and Kurganets-25 BMPs and the new VPK-7829 Boomerang amphibious armored personnel carrier. After 2018, Russia will have the most modern armored vehicles, which will radically change the balance of power on the battlefield.
During the Gulf War and the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the United States used mobile groups of tanks, vehicles, armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles to break into enemy defenses. The actions of these groups in Russia will need to be supported by massive airborne operations. And here an unpleasant surprise awaits them.If against the Russian air defense systems “Pantsir” and “Tunguska”, as well as against MANPADS “Igla” and “Strela”, American combat helicopters and aircraft can use the AN / ALQ-144/147/157 electronic warfare system, then against MANPADS 9K333 “Verba”, which entered service with the Russian troops in 2016, this equipment is powerless.
Homing sensors “Verba” are capable of operating simultaneously at three frequencies in the visible and infrared spectra. “Verba” can work in conjunction with the “Barnaul-T” system, which is responsible for electronic reconnaissance, electronic warfare and automatic control of amphibious forces.”Barnaul-T” neutralizes the radar of enemy aircraft and interferes with the operation of laser guidance systems for missiles and bombs of the enemy.
As can be seen from the above analysis, even now a war with the use of conventional weapons can cost our Western adversaries dearly. The rearmament of the Russian army, which will take place by 2018, will completely eliminate the West’s technological advantage in the military sphere. The more ready, powerful and equipped our Armed Forces are, the less likely it will be that the West will decide on an open war against Russia.
Socio-political tension is constantly growing in the world. And some experts predict that everything may turn into a global conflict. How realistic is it in the short term?
Risk remains
It is unlikely that today anyone is pursuing the goal of unleashing a world war. Previously, if a large-scale conflict was brewing, the instigator always hoped to end it as quickly as possible and with minimal losses. However, as history shows, almost all “blitzkriegs” resulted in a protracted confrontation involving a huge amount of human and material resources.Such wars caused damage to both the loser and the winner.
Nevertheless, wars have always been and, unfortunately, will arise, as someone wants to have more resources, while someone defends their borders, including from massive illegal migration, fights terrorism or demands the restoration of their rights in in accordance with the previously concluded agreements.
In the event that countries do decide to get involved in a global war, then, according to many experts, they will certainly split into different camps, which will be approximately equal in strength. The aggregate military, primarily nuclear, potential of the powers that hypothetically take part in the collision is capable of destroying all life on the planet dozens of times. How likely is it that the coalitions will start this suicidal war? Analysts say it is not great, but the danger remains.
Political poles
The modern world order is far from what it was after the Second World War. However, formally, it continues to exist on the basis of the Yalta and Bretton Woods agreements of the states of the anti-Hitler coalition. The only thing that has changed is the balance of power that took shape during the Cold War. The two poles of world geopolitics today, as well as half a century ago, are determined by Russia and the United States.
Russia crossed the Rubicon, and it did not pass without a trace and painless for her: it temporarily lost its superpower status and lost its traditional allies. However, our country has managed to maintain integrity, retain influence in the post-Soviet space, revive the military-industrial complex and acquire new strategic partners.
The financial and political elite of the United States, as in the good old days, under democratic slogans continues to carry out military expansion far from its borders, at the same time successfully imposing on the leading countries beneficial “anti-crisis” and “anti-terrorist” policies.
In recent years, China has persistently wedged itself into the confrontation between Russia and the United States. The eastern dragon, while maintaining good relations with Russia, nevertheless does not take sides. Possessing the largest army and carrying out rearmament on an unprecedented scale, he has every reason for this.
A united Europe also remains an influential player on the world stage. Despite the dependence on the North Atlantic Alliance, certain forces in the Old World are in favor of an independent political course. The reconstruction of the armed forces of the European Union, which will be carried out by Germany and France, is not far off. In the face of energy shortages, Europe will act decisively, analysts say.
One cannot but pay attention to the growing threat posed by radical Islam in the Middle East. This is not only the growing extremist nature of the actions of Islamic groups in the region every year, but also the expansion of the geography and tools of terrorism.
Unions
Recently, we are increasingly witnessing the consolidation of various union associations. This is evidenced, on the one hand, by the summits of Donald Trump and the leaders of Israel, South Korea, Japan, Britain and other leading European countries, and on the other, by the meetings of heads of state within the framework of the BRICS bloc, which attracts new international partners.During the talks, not only trade, economic and political issues are discussed, but also all kinds of aspects of military cooperation.
The well-known military analyst Joachim Hagopian emphasized back in 2015 that the “recruitment of friends” by America and Russia is not accidental. China and India, in his opinion, will be drawn into the orbit of Russia, and the European Union will inevitably follow the United States. This is supported by the intensified exercises of NATO countries in Eastern Europe and a military parade with the participation of Indian and Chinese units on Red Square.
Adviser to the President of Russia Sergei Glazyev declares that it will be beneficial and even fundamentally important for our country to create a coalition from any countries that do not support militant rhetoric directed against the Russian state. Then, according to him, the United States will have to moderate its ardor.
At the same time, it will be of great importance what position will be taken by Turkey, which is almost a key figure capable of acting as a catalyst for relations between Europe and the Middle East, and more broadly, between the West and the countries of the Asian region. What we are seeing now is Istanbul’s cunning game on the disagreements between the United States and Russia.
Resources
Foreign and domestic analysts are inclined to conclude that a global war can be provoked by the global financial crisis. The most serious problem of the leading countries of the world lies in the close intertwining of their economies: the collapse of one of them will entail grave consequences for others.
The war that may follow a devastating crisis will be fought not so much for territories as for resources. For example, analysts Alexander Sobyanin and Marat Shibutov build the following hierarchy of resources that the beneficiary will receive: people, uranium, gas, oil, coal, mining raw materials, drinking water, agricultural land.
It is curious that, from the point of view of some experts, the status of a universally recognized world leader does not guarantee the United States victory in such a war. In the past, NATO commander-in-chief Richard Schiffer, in his book 2017: War with Russia, predicted a defeat for the United States, which would be caused by a financial collapse and the collapse of the American army.
Who’s first?
Today, the crisis on the Korean Peninsula could be the trigger that could trigger a mechanism, if not a world war, then a global collision. Joachim Hagopian, however, predicts that it is fraught with the use of nuclear charges and at first Russia and the United States will not get involved in it.
Glazyev sees no serious grounds for a global war, but notes that its risk will persist until the United States abandons its claims to world domination. The most dangerous period, according to Glazyev, is the beginning of the 2020s, when the West will come out of the depression, and developed countries, including China and the United States, will begin another round of rearmament. At the peak of a new technological leap, the threat of a global conflict will lie.
It is characteristic that the famous Bulgarian clairvoyant Vanga did not dare to predict the date of the outbreak of the Third World War, indicating only that its cause, most likely, would be religious strife around the world.
“Hybrid Wars”
Not everyone believes in the reality of World War III.Why go to massive sacrifices and destruction, if there is a long-tested and more effective means – “hybrid war”. In the “White Paper” intended for the commanders of the special forces of the American army, the section “Winning in a Complex World” contains all the comprehensive information on this matter.
It says that any military operations against the authorities primarily imply implicit and covert actions. Their essence is in the attack by the forces of rebels or terrorist organizations (which are supplied from abroad with money and weapons) on government structures.Sooner or later, the existing regime loses control over the situation and gives up its country to the sponsors of the coup.
The Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, General Valery Gerasimov, considers “hybrid warfare” a means that is many times superior in its results to any open military clashes.
Capital can do anything
Nowadays, not only conspiracy theorists are convinced that both world wars were largely provoked by the Anglo-American financial corporations, which extracted fabulous profits from militarization. And their ultimate goal is to establish the so-called “American peace”.
“Today we are on the verge of a grandiose reformatting of the world order, the instrument of which will again be war,” says the writer Alexei Kungurov. It will be a financial war of world capitalism, directed mainly against the developing countries.
The task of such a war is not to give the periphery any chance of any independence. In underdeveloped or dependent countries, a system of external currency management is established, which forces them to exchange their output, resources and other material values for dollars. The more transactions, the more the American machine will print currencies.
But the main goal of world capital is the Heartland: the territory of the Eurasian continent, most of which is controlled by Russia. Whoever owns the Heartland, with its colossal resource base, will own the world, as the English geopolitician Halford Mackinder said.
Endless terrorist attacks, incessant armed conflicts, continuing disagreements between Russia, the United States and the European Union indicate that peace on our planet literally hangs in the balance. This situation is alarming for both politicians and ordinary people. It is no coincidence that the issue of the outbreak of World War III is being seriously discussed by the entire world community.
Expert opinion
Some political scientists believe that the mechanism of war was already launched several years ago. It all started in Ukraine, when a corrupt president was removed from office and the new government in the country was called illegitimate, but simply a junta. Then they announced to the whole world that it was fascist and they began to frighten her one-sixth of the land.First, mistrust was sown in the minds of the people of the two fraternal peoples, and then open enmity. A full-scale information war began, in which everything was subordinated to inciting hatred between people.
This confrontation was painful for families, relatives, friends of the two fraternal peoples. It got to the point that the politicians of the two countries are ready to push brother against brother. The situation on the Internet also speaks of the danger of the situation. Various discussion platforms and forums have turned into real battlefields where everything is allowed.
If someone else doubts the likelihood of war, then they can simply go to any social network and see what intensity the discussion of hot topics is reaching, starting with information about oil quotes and ending with the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.
If it is possible to quarrel two fraternal peoples who have shared grief and victories for over 360 years, then what can we say about other countries. Any nation can be called an enemy overnight, having prepared timely information support in the media and the Internet. So, for example, it was with Turkey.
Currently, Russia is testing new methods of war on the example of Crimea, Donbass, Ukraine, Syria. Why deploy multimillion-dollar armies, transfer troops, if you can carry out a “successful information attack”, and to top it off, send a small contingent of “little green men”. Fortunately, positive experience already exists in Georgia, Crimea, Syria and Donbass.
Some political observers believe that it all began in Iraq, when the United States decided to remove the allegedly undemocratic president and carried out Operation Desert Storm. As a result, the country’s natural resources came under US control.
Having made a little “fat” in the two thousandths and having carried out a number of military operations, Russia decided not to yield and prove to the whole world that it “got up from its knees.” Hence such “decisive” actions in Syria, Crimea and Donbass. In Syria, we protect the whole world from ISIS, in Crimea, Russians from Bandera, in Donbass, the Russian-speaking population from Ukrainian punishers.
In fact, an invisible confrontation between the United States and Russia has already begun.America does not want to share its dominance in the world with the Russian Federation. Direct proof of this is present-day Syria.
Tension in different parts of the world, where the interests of the two countries meet, will only grow.
There are experts who believe that the tension with America is caused by the fact that the latter realizes the loss of its leading position against the background of a strengthening China and wants to destroy Russia in order to take possession of its natural resources. Various methods of weakening the Russian Federation are used:
- EU sanctions;
- decrease in oil prices;
- the involvement of the Russian Federation in the arms race;
- support for protest sentiments in Russia.
America is doing everything to repeat the situation in 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed.
War in Russia is inevitable in 2018
This point of view is shared by the American political analyst I. Hagopian. He posted his thoughts on this on the GlobalResears website. He noted that there are all signs of the preparation of the United States and Russia for war. The author notes that America will support:
- NATO countries;
- Israel;
- Australia;
- All USA satellites worldwide.
China and India are among Russia’s allies. The expert believes that the United States is facing bankruptcy and therefore it will attempt to seize the wealth of the Russian Federation. He also stressed that as a result of this conflict, some states may disappear.
The former head of NATO A. Shirreff gives similar forecasts. For this, he even wrote a book about the war with Russia. In it, he notes the inevitability of a military confrontation with America. According to the plot of the book, Russia is taking over the Baltic states.NATO countries are defending it. As a result, the Third World War begins. On the one hand, the plot looks frivolous and implausible, but on the other hand, given that the work was written by a retired general, the script looks quite plausible.
Who will win America or Russia
To answer this question, it is necessary to compare the military power of the two powers:
Armament | Russia | USA |
Army in the field | 1.4 millionpeople | 1.1million people |
Reserve | 1.3 million people | 2.4 million people |
Airports and runways | 1218 | 13513 |

Armored vehicles | 27607 | 25782 |
Self-propelled guns | 5990 | 1934 |
Towed artillery | 4625 | 1791 |

Ports and Terminals | 7 | 23 |
Warships | 352 | 473 |
Aircraft carriers | 1 | 10 |
Submarines | 63 | 72 |
Attack ships | 77 | 17 |
Budget |
Success in war does not depend solely on superiority in weapons. As the military expert J. Shields stated, the Third World War will not be similar to the two previous wars. The fighting will be carried out using computer technology. They will become more short-lived, but the number of victims will be in the thousands. Nuclear weapons are unlikely to be used, but chemical and bacteriological weapons as an auxiliary means are not excluded.
Attacks will be launched not only on the battlefield, but also in:
- communications;
- on the Internet;
- television;
- economy;
- finance;
- politics;
- outer space.
Something similar is happening now in Ukraine. The offensive is on all fronts. Blatant misinformation, hacker attacks on financial servers, sabotage in the economic field, discrediting politicians, diplomats, terrorist attacks, turning off broadcasting satellites and much more can cause irreparable damage to the enemy along with hostilities at the front.
Predictions of psychics
Throughout history, there have been many prophets who predicted the end of humanity. One of them is Nostradamus. As for the world wars, he accurately predicted the first two. As for the Third World War, he said that it would happen through the fault of the Antichrist, who will not stop at nothing and will be terribly merciless.
The next psychic whose prophecies have come true is Wanga. She informed future generations that World War III would start from a small state in Asia. The fastest is Syria. The military action will be triggered by an attack on four heads of state. The consequences of the war will be dire.
The famous psychic P. Globa also said his words about the Third World War. His forecasts can be called optimistic. He said that humanity will end World War III if it prevents hostilities in Iran.
The psychics listed above are not the only ones who predicted World War III. Similar predictions made:
- A.
