What equipment do lacrosse goalies need. How to choose the best lacrosse goalie gear for youth and adult players. Which brands offer top-quality lacrosse goaltender equipment. How much does a complete set of lacrosse goalie gear cost.
Understanding the Crucial Role of Lacrosse Goalie Equipment
Lacrosse goalies face unique challenges on the field, requiring specialized equipment to ensure both protection and performance. The right gear can make a significant difference in a goalie’s confidence and ability to make crucial saves.
Proper lacrosse goalie equipment serves two primary purposes:
- Protection from high-velocity shots
- Enhanced mobility and flexibility for quick reactions
Investing in high-quality gear is essential for goalies at all levels, from youth players to seasoned professionals. Let’s explore the key components of a lacrosse goalie’s equipment arsenal and how to choose the best options for optimal performance.
Essential Components of Lacrosse Goalie Equipment
A complete set of lacrosse goalie equipment includes several crucial pieces. Each item plays a vital role in protecting the goalie and enhancing their performance on the field.
Helmet
The helmet is arguably the most critical piece of equipment for a lacrosse goalie. It protects the head from high-speed shots and potential collisions. Key features to look for in a lacrosse goalie helmet include:
- NOCSAE certification
- Proper fit and adjustability
- Impact-resistant shell
- Comfortable padding
- Wide field of vision
Chest Protector
A chest protector guards the goalie’s torso, shoulders, and arms against powerful shots. Modern chest protectors offer a balance of protection and flexibility. Consider these factors when choosing a chest protector:
- Coverage area
- Shock-absorbing materials
- Ventilation for breathability
- Adjustable straps for a secure fit
Goalie Stick
The goalie stick is unique in its design, featuring a wider head and longer shaft compared to field player sticks. Key aspects of a quality lacrosse goalie stick include:
- Appropriate length (typically 40-72 inches)
- Durable construction
- Proper stringing for ball control
- Comfortable grip
Protective Cup
A protective cup is essential for male goalies to guard against groin injuries. Female goalies may opt for pelvic protectors designed specifically for women.
Throat Guard
Attached to the helmet, a throat guard protects the vulnerable neck area from shots and checks.
Gloves
Lacrosse goalie gloves offer additional padding and protection for the hands and wrists. Look for gloves with:
- Reinforced palm areas
- Flexible finger design
- Moisture-wicking materials
Leg Pads
Shin guards and thigh pads provide essential protection for a goalie’s lower body. Some goalies also opt for knee pads for added cushioning during low saves.
Top Brands for Lacrosse Goalie Equipment
Several reputable brands offer high-quality lacrosse goalie equipment. Here are some of the top manufacturers known for their innovative designs and reliable products:
- STX
- Warrior
- Maverik
- Cascade
- Brine
- Under Armour
These brands consistently receive positive reviews from players and coaches alike. When selecting equipment, consider factors such as durability, comfort, and performance features specific to each brand’s offerings.
Choosing the Right Size and Fit for Lacrosse Goalie Gear
Proper sizing is crucial for lacrosse goalie equipment to ensure maximum protection and optimal performance. Ill-fitting gear can compromise safety and hinder a goalie’s ability to make saves effectively.
How can you determine the right size for lacrosse goalie equipment?
- Consult manufacturer size charts
- Measure key body parts (chest, waist, height)
- Try on equipment whenever possible
- Consider growth potential for youth players
Remember that different brands may have slight variations in sizing, so it’s essential to refer to each manufacturer’s specific guidelines when selecting gear.
Maintenance and Care Tips for Lacrosse Goalie Equipment
Proper maintenance of lacrosse goalie equipment is essential for longevity and continued performance. Regular care can help prevent premature wear and tear, ensuring that your gear remains in top condition throughout the season.
Cleaning and Disinfecting
After each use, wipe down equipment with a damp cloth to remove dirt and sweat. For deeper cleaning, follow these guidelines:
- Use mild soap and water for most surfaces
- Avoid harsh chemicals that may damage materials
- Allow gear to air dry completely before storage
- Use equipment-specific cleaning products when available
Storage
Proper storage is crucial for maintaining the shape and integrity of your lacrosse goalie equipment. Follow these tips:
- Store gear in a cool, dry place
- Use equipment bags to protect items during transport
- Avoid leaving gear in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures
- Hang chest protectors and jerseys to maintain their shape
Regular Inspections
Periodically inspect your equipment for signs of wear or damage. Pay close attention to:
- Cracks or dents in helmets
- Loose stitching or tears in padding
- Worn-out straps or closures
- Degradation of protective materials
Address any issues promptly to ensure your gear continues to provide adequate protection.
Budget Considerations for Lacrosse Goalie Equipment
Lacrosse goalie equipment can represent a significant investment, particularly for youth players who may outgrow their gear quickly. Understanding the costs associated with each piece of equipment can help players and parents budget accordingly.
What is the average cost of a complete set of lacrosse goalie equipment?
A full set of high-quality lacrosse goalie gear can range from $500 to $1,500 or more, depending on the brands and specific items chosen. Here’s a breakdown of approximate costs for individual pieces:
- Helmet: $150-$300
- Chest Protector: $100-$250
- Goalie Stick: $80-$200
- Gloves: $50-$150
- Leg Pads: $50-$100
- Throat Guard: $20-$40
- Protective Cup: $15-$30
Keep in mind that prices can vary widely based on factors such as brand reputation, advanced features, and materials used. While it may be tempting to opt for cheaper alternatives, investing in quality equipment can provide better protection and potentially last longer, offering better value in the long run.
Ways to Save on Lacrosse Goalie Equipment
For budget-conscious players and families, there are several strategies to reduce the overall cost of lacrosse goalie gear:
- Look for end-of-season sales and clearance events
- Consider purchasing previous-year models at discounted prices
- Explore gently used equipment from reputable sources
- Invest in high-quality essentials (helmet, chest protector) and budget for other items
- Check with local lacrosse programs for equipment exchange opportunities
Remember that safety should always be the top priority when selecting lacrosse goalie equipment, regardless of budget constraints.
Innovations in Lacrosse Goalie Equipment Technology
The world of lacrosse goalie equipment is constantly evolving, with manufacturers introducing new technologies and materials to enhance protection, comfort, and performance. Understanding these innovations can help players make informed decisions when selecting their gear.
Advanced Materials
Modern lacrosse goalie equipment often incorporates cutting-edge materials designed to offer superior protection without sacrificing mobility. Some examples include:
- Impact-absorbing foams
- Lightweight, high-strength plastics
- Moisture-wicking fabrics
- Energy-dispersing composites
Ergonomic Designs
Manufacturers are increasingly focusing on ergonomic designs that better conform to a goalie’s body and movements. This approach results in:
- Improved range of motion
- Enhanced comfort during extended wear
- Better weight distribution
- Reduced fatigue during play
Customization Options
Many brands now offer customization features that allow goalies to tailor their equipment to their specific needs and preferences. These may include:
- Adjustable padding systems
- Interchangeable components
- Personalized graphics and color schemes
Smart Technology Integration
As wearable technology advances, some manufacturers are exploring ways to incorporate smart features into lacrosse goalie equipment. Potential applications include:
- Impact sensors for concussion monitoring
- Performance tracking capabilities
- Biometric data collection
While many of these smart technologies are still in development, they represent an exciting frontier in the evolution of lacrosse goalie gear.
Preparing for Game Day: Essential Lacrosse Goalie Equipment Checklist
Arriving at the field with all the necessary equipment is crucial for lacrosse goalies. A comprehensive checklist can help ensure that no essential items are forgotten on game day.
Pre-Game Equipment Checklist
Before heading to the field, review this checklist to make sure you have all the required gear:
- Helmet with properly attached throat guard
- Chest protector
- Goalie stick (primary and backup)
- Protective cup or pelvic protector
- Gloves
- Leg pads (shin guards and thigh pads)
- Cleats
- Jersey and shorts/pants
- Mouthguard
- Water bottle
- Equipment bag
Additional Items to Consider
While not all of these items are essential, they can be helpful to have on hand:
- Extra shoelaces
- Tape (for stick or equipment adjustments)
- Towel
- Sunscreen
- Hand warmers (for cold weather games)
- Energy snacks
Pre-Game Equipment Check
Once at the field, perform a quick inspection of your gear:
- Ensure all straps and closures are secure
- Check for any visible damage or wear
- Test the flexibility and fit of your equipment
- Confirm that your stick meets league regulations
By following this checklist and performing a pre-game equipment check, lacrosse goalies can ensure they are fully prepared to take the field with confidence.

Goalie Gear of the NLL: Examining All 19 Top to Bottom!
New England Black Wolves
Evan Kirk
Photo: Khoi Ton
One of the best setups in the NLL has to belong to Evan Kirk. The lightning bolts with a Native warrior and wolf on the sides complete one of the best pieces of art in the game and it looks great with the away whites. The helmet plays perfectly with the jersey and respects everything that the Black Wolves represents. We’ll get to see how it flows with their black jerseys on Saturday. But Instagram is now telling me we may see something new unveiled…
Kirk is one of the few goalies to rock a dyed head and it’s straight money. Orange and white lighting bolts wrap the head until meeting at a NEBW logo in the scoop, with an incredible black overlay. It ends with an all black shaft and black tape work. Best stick in the NLL? It just may very well be.
Hopefully all of that style can rub off on the rest of the team and translate into some scratches in the win column.

We haven’t seen much of the rookie yet in 2017, about 15 minutes total. Dougie is in the same pads as Kirk, but opts for the Cascade bucket and all white tape, no dye. Maybe he will throw some decals on the bucket over time? We can only wait and see!

Rochester Knighthawks
Matt Vinc

Now that’s a helmet. Hawkamania is running wild, BROTHHEERRRR! Anyone with wrestling references is good in my book. It feels like the crown and chin piece have such a hard contrast that the bottom looks undone. I’m still a big fan.
I love that Vino goes with the black on black legs with Knighthawks accents. The stick has no rebound knob and the tape it a lot higher since he stays is a permanent scarecrow. I would love to see what a black pair of gloves would look like. I guess my imagination (or Photoshop) could answer that.

Rochester is another squad with a Cascade-adorning backup. Veteran Angus Goodleaf is relieving Vinc for the 5th-straight season and he looks good doing it. The helmet wrap is perfect. It matches the the rest of the team’s decals with just a little something extra. The all black stick is a nice touch too, but I’m not sure about that white endcap. Everything else matches Vinc this season. What wouldn’t look good in those colors?

Stone Cold! Aaron Bold!
It’s gotta be one of the best chants in the game and the big man backs it up. It starts with the murdered-out stick. All black, no fat knobs, wraps or anything. That is how you do it. It’s held by all black gloves with a hint of green and white, matching his solid black leg pads with just the lettering in Rush green.
His helmet is so sick they made a shed size version and put in on the display in the SaskTel Centre. Hulk SMASH! All too fitting for the muscle man between the irons. It’s a great look to match the Rush attitude and the fans are loving it too.

The pads they share, but the helmets are equally awesome! We’ve always see some sort of animation reference from these guys and this year Carlson is going with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle lacrosse players. If there’s any backup goalie that truly makes a difference each and every game, it’s Tyler Carlson. I’m sure that’s why we see the Turtles symbolizing a BROTHERS theme. Gotta love this guy’s passion for the game and his team, using his voice at their disposal each and every weekend.

Toronto Rock
Nick Rose
Photo: Micheline V
The best tape jobs in the goalie business have to belong to Nick Rose. Look up his stick from WILC 2015 when he played for England. Exactly. But he’s also fighting for the best helmet award too. “Can You Smell What the ROCK are Cooking?” How has this not been done every year?! Put The Rock’s face on anything and I’m sold. The trail of maple leafs up the crown and Rock logos with the music notes tie it all together just so beautifully.
From everything I’ve ever seen, the white plastic on blue with red trim is the only clean way to go about the leg pads. Too much red or blue can be an eyesore and the Rock have the perfect balance. They match the UA gloves really nicely, pairing the white and blue together with accents of red.

Steve Fryer
Photo: Micheline V
I’m sure Steve is a great guy. But with the job Rosey has been doing so far this year, Fryer isn’t getting his photo taken a lot. I found enough to know that he’s wearing the same exact gear as Rose, with an unpainted white bucket on top. He’s got some Moose Mesh tied up in the head, the only guy going with it this season. How much more we see of him depends on the return of veteran goalie Brandon Miller to the bench.
Home opener tomorrow night at the ACC! Excited to be back on home floor in front of the best fans in the NLL! @thetorontorock ? @daveyfryer #rockon #gorockgo #rockthe6

Vancouver Stealth
Tyler Richards
Photo: Garrett James
Although it’s a little hard to read at first, if you really look at his custom artwork, T-Rich’s helmet is designed to look like that of a fighter pilot’s. I actually like it a lot up close. When he made the change from the Cascade R, he made sure to bring some quality paint with him.
I’m not a big fan of the switch in leg pads from all black to white and black. I think the Stealth goalie should be just a little more… Stealthy? The stick and gloves too. All black kind of fits the part of the name, doesn’t it? Oh who am I to judge? Richards obviously does whatever he wants.

After backing up Ward for a while in Colorado, Belanger couldn’t claim the job over Kirk in New England for a couple of years. Now he’s in Vancouver and he’s not doing a halfway bad job for the BC boys. He’s still sticking with the Cascade R and the matte grey with decals is a pretty good look. It’s even better when matched with those all black legs. If they can ditch the white from the gloves I would be all about it.
The all black stick looks serious when finished off with a few rows of red shooting strings. Belanger gets it. Look good, play good.

Goalkeeper equipment: groin guard
Exact matches only
Search in title
Search in content
Ice hockey goalie groin protection is as much a must as elbow pads, helmet or bib. This type of protection is used in many sports, but for the goalkeeper position in hockey, it is given special attention. Believe me, you would not want to perform without a shell (bowl, shell or bandage). Goalie cups (often referred to abroad as “gills”) provide additional protection to the groin from various types of injuries. An interesting fact: many NHL goaltenders wear as many as 3 bowls, which consist of one standard for field players and a “double” goalie. Security is never overkill!
What are groin guards used for in hockey?
Here it is worth considering the fact that the groin protection for both the goalkeeper and the field player is combined with a shell and special trousers, in which there is a place / fastening for this protection element. At its core, groin protection is reinforced underwear. Usually, the shell itself does not provide sufficient protection and often requires an additional plastic shell to be inserted into a special pocket that covers the groin. Some hockey players resort to the use of special belts that soften blows to the groin area and increase comfort while wearing. But we will bypass this element, since it is much less important and more related to the section of additional accessories.
These are the consequences of a blow directly to the groin area!
Types of groin protection for hockey goalies
The goalkeeper takes a huge amount of shots on himself during the match. Therefore, he needs an improved version of protection. The same applies to the groin area. Protective shells, which are made for goalkeepers, have several additional segments that house durable materials. Almost all goalkeepers in professional hockey use a kind of bandage, into which all the necessary elements are sewn. This is the only recommended type of protection in both the KHL and NHL for goaltenders. Therefore, we will look at some of the most popular models that professional hockey players use:
WARRIOR RITUAL X3 PRO
When you think about groin protection for goalkeepers, this is the model that will be the most suitable. If you are an adherent of one or another brand, it is worth considering that some manufacturers do not even make goalkeeper equipment. The Warrior X3 is the latest iteration of the Warrior X2, previously considered the best goalie brace on the market.
Warrior X3 E
This is a cheaper version of the first model. However, the Warrior X3 E is a step up from the Warrior X3 Pro. An added bonus of this outfit is the ability to add your own bowl inside. Some athletes find a special Kevlar bowl in order not to think about the safety of the groin at all.
BAUER PRO JOCK
In the world of goalie equipment, Bauer is not known for having the highest quality product. But it’s a great option for beginners and amateurs alike. The Bauer Pro Jock is one of the most durable goalie brace Bauer has ever made. It offers dual multi-bowl protection and high mobile wear resistance. Comparing the Bauer Pro to the Warrior X3 Pro, the former will feel much smaller, and therefore more mobile and comfortable. Of course, the level of protection suffers a little, but here it is already worth choosing between comfort and safety.
Remember! There is no groin protection in the form of underwear for the goalkeeper position! Before buying, you should think about other nuances that will significantly affect the final choice of equipment:
- Durability. Hockey players play long and hard. Like most other underwear and compression garments, with regular washing and proper care, a bandage can last for many years. The cups may need to be replaced from time to time as they can deteriorate from moisture and sweat.
- Expenses. Most bandages can be found on the market for less than $30. Sweatpants and shorts tend to be more expensive because they are equipped with compression technology and are worn for a long time.
- Comfort. When choosing a bandage for a goalkeeper, it is extremely important to choose the right equipment size.
An improperly selected shell will rub and cause significant discomfort during the game. Feel free to measure and check the equipment! It is recommended to buy a bandage one size larger so that it does not rub during movements. But at the same time, do not forget to tap on the sink and actively move around during the fitting to understand how tightly the equipment fits. If she hangs out, then this is not your option.
Materials
The most commonly used materials for groin protection are stretchy materials, polyester and plastic. Elastic materials are used to create bindings and straps that allow a hockey player to adjust their equipment to fit and secure it to their pants.
- Polyester: is most commonly found in sports shorts and pants, but can also be used to make bandages to finish the inside or outside. It is lightweight, stretchy and breathable.
- Plastic: is what most sports groin cups are made of.
The hard plastic is shaped to surround the groin (which is why it is called a shell or shell), to prevent any deformation and to provide maximum protection.
Brands
The most popular hockey groin protection brands are Shock Doctor, CCM and Warrior.
- Shock Doctor: specializes in protective and sports equipment for many different sports. The manufacturer offers a wide selection of equipment for every taste, but is more suitable for choosing among field players. For goalkeepers, individual bowls are available for individual sizes.
- CCM: one of the largest manufacturers of hockey equipment. They make several different types of bandages out of rubber.
- Warrior: makes high quality equipment for both hockey and lacrosse. They make sports shorts, sweatpants and some bandages especially for goalkeepers.
