DIY Macrame Curtain – Makeful

Macrame has had an important moment this year, and we are not angry about it. Woven draperies add texture and warmth to a room that would not be possible with a traditional painting or framed canvas. We decided to take our own look at the movement of macrame and make a chic macrame curtain using two types of knots that look much more complicated than they really are.

For this project, we replaced the traditional macrame cord with a softer and thicker natural yarn that we had in the studio after creating this modern DIY dreamcatcher. We liked the texture and feel of the thick fiber, but the added bonus was that due to the thickness the weaving went faster. Although, full disclosure, this project did take a couple of hours. But damn it, it was worth it!

Step 1: Get the scissors ready! First measure the doorway or window that your curtain will hang from.After measuring, cut off the yarn twice the length of the doorway. For example, our doorway was 78 “and each yarn we cut was 156” long. You will need a lot of yarn to fill the curtain rod; with our thick yarn, we put about 16 pieces of yarn in one foot of the curtain rod and ended up knitting about 4 feet, or 64 pieces of yarn. As we said … you will need a lot of yarn.

Step 2: Thread the yarn through the curtain rod, folding each piece in half, tucking the folded loop under the shank, and then pulling the ends of the string through.Repeat until the entire cornice is covered! (Yes, it will take a minute, but it will be worth it!).

Step 3: Now we were going to weave the pieces of yarn together through the top of the curtain using what we called a “horizontal double semi-knot”. This sounds MUCH scarier than it actually is! If you’ve ever double-knotted your sneakers, you can tie this knot. All you need to do is take the top thread over and under the next thread to tie the knot.Then repeat to make a double knot.

Take the second strand over and under the third and tie a knot, then repeat until THIS becomes a double knot. Continue walking one at a time until you tie a double knot along the entire length of the curtain.

Step 4: To give this curtain a V-shape, we will make the exact same horizontal double semi-tie knot! Use masking tape to indicate exactly where your knots will be located.The only difference here is that we will be working from outside to inside, not straight across. On the right, take the outermost string and twist it over the second string. Tie a knot in half and repeat until you reach the middle. The same on the left; take the outermost string and twist it over the second string. Tie it twice and repeat until you reach the middle. Tie with a double knot!

Step 5: Now that you have V, you can remove the tape! You can stop there if you like, or you can add another knotted pattern as we did to “tie” the image together (sorry, couldn’t resist!).The last knot we make is a regular double knot (just like tying double laces on a shoe), except that you are going to knot in an “x” pattern. Divide the yarn right down the middle so you know that your pattern will be centered. Starting to the left of center, count out four pieces of yarn. Take two pieces on your left hand, two pieces on your right and tie them in a double knot about 3 inches below the V shape you made. Then repeat the same on the right side of the middle of the curtain; count four yarn lengths.Take two pieces in your right hand, two pieces on your left and tie them in a double knot so that the knot is flush with the knot on the left.

You now have four rows of double yarn. Take the two middle rows and double knot them in the middle of the curtain. See how the “X” pattern starts to form? Keep repeating the steps above for counting yarns in groups of 4 and then tying them together and you will soon have this stunning criss-cross pattern without having to get a Girl Scout badge when tying a knot! Continue this pattern for any part of the curtain, but remember that you want to be able to walk through the curtain when it is raised, so do not weave the curtain too far down.

Step 6: Time for the finishing touches! We hung up the curtain to watch the cross knots fall, and then went through and straightened a few of them to make them look nice and even. We cut the bottom of the curtain a little to get rid of too long pieces. Finally, we added large tassels on both sides as well as in the center to “tie” the whole image together (oh my god, I did it again). Create Swag

Wrap the cord around one curtain panel, through the center slot and back to the pushpin. This action collects the curtain and creates a swag. Pull more fabric through the cord to create a bulkier mop. Adjust the tension on the cord until you achieve the desired size and depth of the finished workpiece. Secure the free end of the cord to the pushpin.

Label Swag

Using a self-erasing fabric marking pencil, draw a line on the wrong side facing you.Impossible to make a solid continuous line due to the curtains being assembled; this line is only a guideline. Mark the other panel in the same way, making sure both strips are the same depth and length.

Sew on rings

Remove the thrust pins and insert the eyebolt in one position. Attach the cord clip to the wall under the push pin in a convenient location. Consider the presence of children and pets and place the cleats so that the cords are out of reach.Lower the curtain and place one panel at a time on the table, with the wrong side facing the surface, and join the guide marks to create a curved, solid line on the curtain. Sew a Roman ring by hand every 4 inches along the line. If the curtain is lined, make sure your stitches span both the lining and the draped layers.

Install the cord

Tie one end of the drape cord to the center edge of the shade. Thread the cord through the remaining rings on the curtain.Hang the curtain on the bar in the correct position. Continue threading the cord up to the eyelet screw on the wall. Let the cord fall 12 inches behind the tenon and cut it off. Attach a decorative tassel to the end. I can’t call our living and dining room complete until we finally hang the curtains. Unfortunately, elongated curtain rods are incredibly expensive, I was looking for ideas on how to make inexpensive curtain rods with my own hands and found tons of curtain rod inspiration .

So I headed to the hardware store and left with supplies for 3 super cheap DIY curtain rods.

DIY materials for cornices

The prices shown are what I paid at my local home improvement store. Piping and straps were found along with the power supply, corner brackets were next to cabinet hardware.

The cost of all the necessary materials for my 3 curtain rods (including a very long one) was $ 14.50 .This is an amazing deal.

Tip: the store will cut the cable to the required length for you. But make sure you ask very politely. When I bought mine, this man told me they didn’t cut it in there … but he did cut it when he spoke. If you prefer to just cut it at home, a simple hacksaw is fine.

How to make curtain rods with your own hands

I started by spray painting all of my equipment to get the look I wanted. Be sure to use an aerosol primer first to help the paint adhere.I used oil-based bronze spray paint, but you can choose any metallic finish or any color of spray paint.

Attach a strap to each corner bracket with a nut and bolt.

Simply use the screws provided with the corner brackets to secure the equipment to the wall. You may also need to use anchors depending on what type of wall you have and how heavy your curtains are.

(I have a great trick to paint screws very quickly without messing .)

Then attach the curtains or curtain rings to the rod and insert it into the brackets.

I also found another option if you need inexpensive curtain rods but don’t want to assemble hardware parts yourself. You can buy simple curtain rod brackets sold separately, if you connect them with electrical wiring, you can still save a hefty amount of money compared to store-packed curtain rods, although they won’t be as cheap as when you assemble parts by yourself.

The curtains I chose are Ikea’s bleached Lenda panels – beautiful yet modest again at just $ 20 for two 96-inch panels. But I must admit – I had these curtains ready to hang in my living room for almost a year. Talk about putting things off

These curtains are a flip top style that I never liked but was not ready to give up on forever.So I just folded the buttonholes behind the curtains and used the curtain rings to attach them to the rods.

Even though they are simple white curtains, they go a long way in softening the room.

Instructions

1. Cut the electrical cable to the required length. Make sure it is long enough to extend outside the window by at least six inches on each side.
2. If you decide to paint your curtain rods, it is easiest to paint each part before assembling the curtain rod brackets with your own hands. Make sure your equipment is clean first. Then apply a thin coat of spray primer to each part.
3. Once the primer is completely dry, paint each component with several thin coats of your choice of spray paint.
4. Align one hole in each strap retainer with the last hole in each corner bracket. Use a nut and bolt to attach them.
5. Attach each corner bracket to the wall using wood screws and drywall anchors.
6. Hang the curtains on the conduit curtain rod and install it on the brackets.
