The 2018 edition of the All-Name Team featured an impressive roster of players with names that range from the elegant to the eccentric. These names often reflect cultural influences, family traditions, and sometimes, a dash of parental creativity.

The Impact of Unique Names on Lacrosse Culture
The proliferation of distinctive names in lacrosse has become a talking point among fans and commentators alike. Do these names contribute to the sport’s image? In many ways, they do. The All-Name Team tradition has evolved into a lighthearted celebration of individuality within the lacrosse community, challenging stereotypes and showcasing the sport’s diverse player base.
These unique names often become conversation starters, helping to draw attention to players who might otherwise fly under the radar. They can also create memorable moments during broadcasts and contribute to the overall fan experience.
Analyzing Naming Trends in Collegiate Lacrosse
A closer look at the All-Name Teams reveals some interesting patterns in lacrosse player naming conventions. Are there recurring themes or styles? Indeed, several trends can be observed:
- Preppy and aristocratic-sounding names (e.g., Shackleford, Whitten)
- Nature-inspired names (e.g., Sky, Aurora)
- Unique spellings of common names (e.g., Scottie Rose, Gussie)
- Names that sound like they belong to characters in a novel (e.g., Harlowe Steele, Winston Wenham)
- Surnames used as first names (e.g., Barrett, Parker)
These naming trends reflect a mix of traditional and modern influences, showcasing the evolving nature of naming conventions within the sport.
The Cultural Significance of Lacrosse Names
The unique names in lacrosse are more than just a source of amusement; they offer insights into the cultural fabric of the sport. How do these names reflect the backgrounds of lacrosse players? Many of the names on the All-Name Teams hint at diverse cultural origins, challenging the stereotype of lacrosse as a sport dominated by a single demographic.
For instance, names like Gab Goncalves and Sinead Brierley suggest international influences, while others like Raines Shamburger and Lizabanks Campagna evoke a sense of regional American heritage. This diversity in naming reflects the growing inclusivity of the sport and its appeal across various communities.
The Evolution of the All-Name Team Tradition
The All-Name Team, initially conceived as a way to break the monotony of producing the Face-Off Yearbook publication, has grown into a beloved annual tradition. How has this practice evolved over the years? Each edition brings fresh names to the forefront, reflecting changing trends and the continuous influx of new talent into collegiate lacrosse.
The inclusion of both men’s and women’s teams in recent years has broadened the scope of this tradition, offering a more comprehensive view of naming trends across the sport. This evolution also highlights the growing prominence of women’s lacrosse and the equal recognition given to creative names in both divisions.
The Role of Names in Player Identity and Recognition
For players with unique names, their monikers can become an integral part of their identity within the sport. Does having an unusual name impact a player’s career? While talent and skill remain the primary factors in a player’s success, a distinctive name can certainly aid in recognition and memorability.
Players like IV Stucker and Harlowe Steele might find their names becoming part of their personal brand, potentially aiding in name recognition among fans, recruiters, and media. However, it’s important to note that these players are celebrated for their skills on the field first and foremost, with their names serving as an interesting footnote to their athletic achievements.
Lacrosse Names: A Reflection of Broader Naming Trends
The unique names found in lacrosse are not isolated to the sport but often reflect broader societal naming trends. Are these creative names indicative of changing attitudes towards naming conventions? In many ways, they are. The lacrosse community’s embrace of distinctive names mirrors a larger cultural shift towards individuality and creativity in naming practices.
Names like Quintin Hoch-Bullen and Scottie Rose Growney exemplify the trend of combining traditional elements in new ways or using surnames and multiple given names. This reflects a growing desire for uniqueness in naming, not just in lacrosse but in society at large.
Moreover, the presence of names from diverse cultural backgrounds on the All-Name Teams highlights the increasing globalization of both the sport and naming practices in general. As lacrosse continues to grow internationally, we can expect to see an even wider array of names representing various cultural traditions and naming conventions.
The Future of Lacrosse Naming Trends
As lacrosse continues to evolve and expand its reach, what can we expect from future All-Name Teams? It’s likely that we’ll see a continuation of creative naming practices, with perhaps even more diverse influences as the sport gains popularity in new regions and demographics.
We might also see an increase in names that reflect contemporary pop culture, social movements, or emerging cultural trends. The lacrosse community’s openness to unique names suggests that this tradition will continue to be a vibrant and evolving aspect of the sport’s culture.
Conclusion: The Lasting Impact of Unique Lacrosse Names
The tradition of celebrating unique names in lacrosse through the All-Name Team has become more than just a fun diversion; it’s a reflection of the sport’s culture and its evolution. These distinctive names challenge stereotypes, showcase diversity, and add an element of individuality to the team-oriented sport.
As lacrosse continues to grow and attract players from various backgrounds, the pool of unique names is likely to expand, offering fresh material for future All-Name Teams. This tradition not only provides entertainment but also serves as a lens through which we can observe changing naming trends and the growing diversity within the sport.
Ultimately, while skill and athleticism remain the core of lacrosse, the celebration of unique names adds an extra layer of character to the sport. It reminds us that behind every player is a unique individual, often with a name that tells its own story. As we look forward to future seasons and new rosters, one thing is certain: the tradition of the All-Name Team will continue to be a beloved aspect of the lacrosse community, celebrating the creativity and diversity that make the sport so special.
The 2018 Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse All-Name Teams
Christmas came early. The 2018 All-Name Team is here. Now, featuring both the men’s and women’s teams for 2019.
The 2018 edition features tremendous turnover from last year’s, with lots of freshmen entering the mix. Farewell to Bear Altemus, Brickman House and others from last year. For the women’s team, we bid adieu to All-Name Team mainstays the likes of Besser Dyson, Posey Valis and Wyatt Whitley—a trio of Virginia Cavaliers with some of the best names we’ve covered in all our years. But, needn’t lacrosse fans worry, we’ve scoured like never before to expand this year’s All-Name list, featuring names of a First Lady and a Disney Villain, t’boot.
Inside Lacrosse first started assembling the All-Name Team as a way to break the monotony of producing our Face-Off Yearbook publication. With another college lacrosse season on the horizon, and another yearbook on the shelves, it’s time once again to dive into the depths of NCAA’s greatest nom de plumes. It’s all in fun, and we don’t take it very seriously, poking fun at the tired stereotypes of the sport.
Enjoy the 2018 edition.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Three Southern Conference men’s lacrosse student-athletes were recognized by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) when it announced the 2021 Dynamic Division I All-Americans on Thursday.
High Point attackman Asher Nolting and HPU midfielder Kevin Rogers earned spots on the third team. Richmond attack Ryan Lanchbury earned honorable mention.
Nolting, the 2018 and 2019 SoCon Offensive Player of the Year, finished the season with a league-leading 72 points on 27 goals and a SoCon-best 45 assists, the second-best single-season mark in SoCon history. His 72 points tie for second-most in a season in league history. The attackman’s 5.14 points per game over 14 contests are second in the league this season only to Lanchbury. Nolting is the SoCon’s career leader in points (263), points per game (5.06) assists (151) and assists per game (2.90). He earned All-America honorable mention from Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine.
Rogers, who earned second-team All-America honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine and third-team distinction from Inside Lacrosse, finished the 2021 season with a league-leading 38 goals for the SoCon regular-season co-champion and tournament-champion Panthers, tied for fifth-most in a season in SoCon history. His 2.71 per game also led the league this season. The graduate student was the 2020 NCAA Division III Player of the Year.
Lanchbury was the first Spider in program history named SoCon Offensive Player of the Year this year. He ranks second in the SoCon in scoring with 67 points in 13 games, scoring 28 goals and dishing out 39 assists. In SoCon play only, Lanchbury leads all scorers with 44 total points, 11 more than any other player, averaging 7.33 points per game in the six contests, which is a league record and more than a point better than any out player in league history. A two-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Week, Lanchbury is third all-time in league scoring history with 212 points, scoring 122 goals and dishing out 90 assists in his career. Women’s Lacrosse Names Four Captains for 2022 Season
Story Links
PHILADELPHIA – Mary Semanik Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Kim Hillier announced four senior captains for the 2022 season, selecting Lucy Schneidereith, Karson Harris, Colleen Grady and Zoe Bennett. All four athletes return for their final year of eligibly.
Following the conclusion of their 2021 fall ball season, Hillier had her heart set on Schneidereith leading the team in the spring.
“Our one standing captain Lucy Schneidereith has been carrying this entire team for a few years now,” said Hillier. “I have said this once and I will say it again, she epitomizes the word leader.”
All four athletes had standout years in 2021, leading the Dragons to their first ever appearance in both the CAA Championship game and the NCAA Tournament.
Despite only having been with the Dragons for a short period of time, Hillier mentioned that naming the captains for this season was one of the easiest decisions she’s ever had to make as a coach.
“Lucy, Karson, Colleen and Zoe have not only exceeded on field expectations but are also some of the strongest most confident young ladies that I have ever come across in my years of coaching,” Hillier remarked. “This entire group are all natural born leaders in every sense of the word, and I couldn’t be more honored to coach them and to see them out in their final year. Each week we talk to the team about how this season is for this senior class which also includes our two other incredible senior leaders, Claire Jarema and Maura Cissel. I jump out of bed every morning excited for another day with this group. Their legacy will go down as the best class that this program has ever had and the best group of players to ever put on a Drexel uniform.”
Schneidereith, Harris and Grady were the top three leading scorers for Drexel in 2021. Grady led the way with 48 goals and 41 assists, breaking the single season record for assists (41) and points (89). She was also named a Third-Team IWLCA All-American and IWLCA DI All-Region First Team recipient.
Harris stamped her name in the record book alongside Grady, closing out the year with 61 goals and 92 draw controls, breaking the single season record in both categories. In addition to shattering expectations, Harris was also selected as a Tewaaraton Top-25 nominee, was named CAA Player of the Year, and acquired IWLCA Second-Team All-American and All-Region First Team status.
Schneidereith had the best performance of her career in 2021, collecting 58 goals and three assists for a career-high 61 points. The senior midfielder surpassed the 100th career goal mark to move her 13th all-time in career goal, is one point short of being 15th on the all-time career points leaderboard, was named a member of the CAA All-Tournament team and All-CAA First Team and was selected to the IWLCA DI All-Region Second Team.
Bennett enters the 2022 season as the reigning CAA Goalie of the Year and was the first goalkeeper in program history to receive the award. The Pasadena, Md. native got the start in net in all 16 games in 2021, recording 940:45 minutes of action while battling to a career-high 13-3 record. Bennett posted 150 saves through 16 games for a .465 save percentage. Following the end of the regular season, Bennett was named to the All-CAA First Team and the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic Region First Team.
The Dragons await a much-anticipated return to the field in 2022 as they compete for another shot at a CAA title. The full schedule will be released later this fall.

90,000 America wants to rename hundreds of racist place names
USA wants to rename hundreds of racist place names. But that’s not all.
A lake in Texas for a century and a half was called Nigerhead, that is, “the head of a black man.” In the 90s, the name was corrected in the Latin manner – Negrohead, it turned out to be “black head”, but now this is also unacceptable.
Negro Creek, or Black Creek, was named in Tennessee almost a century ago in memory of drowned black teenagers. These days, it seems only whites are against renaming it.
“I don’t think these children should be deleted from history. If you change the name, it turns out that they never existed, ”says a local resident.
But Congress thinks otherwise. The Democrats presented a bill according to which the names of almost 1,500 geographical objects were recognized as racist and subject to urgent replacement.
One of the main initiators is Congressman Green, who sang solo at Floyd’s funeral a year ago.
“We survived slavery, but did not receive reconciliation. We have survived segregation, but there is still no peace. We suffer from discrimination because we have not received reconciliation, ”he said.
Since Congress is fighting racism inside America, the State Department could do the same outside of America. The first candidates for renaming are the countries of Nigeria and, scary to say, Niger in Africa. And in Europe it is quite possible to suspect the US partners in NATO of Montenegro in racism, the English name of which for some Americans sounds more than criminal – Montenegro.
Sounds like an anecdote, but here is the reaction of an African-American woman who learned about the existence of Montenegro from the Eurovision broadcast: Montenegro? Montenegro? Who decided to call the country that? Where did they get this? Are they making fun of blacks? ”
Liberals look under a microscope for traces of racial injustice in the most unexpected places. The Washington Post recently released an entire study on how racism has infiltrated the DNA of ornithology: too many white scientists and birds named after slave owners.
“White people credit themselves with the discovery of birds. White people named birds after other white people. And the white people have immortalized these names, ”the newspaper writes.
Republicans ridiculed the racist bird theory. However, they are in the minority in Congress.
“We must fight back bird racism! We must decolonize every bird’s nest! We must strip funding and disarm avian domination advocates! Until that happens, the racist birds still have the advantage of a higher position, which allows them to literally shit on us, ”jokes Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson.
And in order to be extremely tolerant, isn’t it time to raise the issue of the White House? True, if they get to it, they will have to not only rename, but also repaint.
12 brands that are called items
Every day we hear or use words to refer to items that are actually brand names in the United States. Very often the items themselves are called completely differently, but many brands have forever become household names in both English and Russian. If you are ready to be surprised with us – let’s go!
1. Copier
Almost all of us call the copier (a copy machine) “copier” (a Xerox machine) . Xerox has launched a campaign to protect its brand. They ran an ad that read, “You cannot ‘xerox’ a document, but you can copy it on a ‘Xerox’ brand copying machine.”
2. Thermos
This is actually a Thermos brand, and it produces vacuum flasks (thermos the Americans also say, but less often).By the way, “thermos” is recognized as a household name in many countries and has lost its trademark.
3. Jacuzzi
This is what mostly Russian-speakers say. Jacuzzi is a jacuzzi company. The correct name in English is hot tub .
4. Pampers
In fact, this is a brand, and the Pampers company produces diapers (diapers) .
5.Jeep
Jeep is a car brand. Large cars in the States are called SUV (sport utility vehicle) . If you constantly say “Jeep” – few people will understand you.
6. Scotch tape
Nobody perceives the word “scotch” in stores as a stationery. Because it’s actually film tape or adhesive tape . Scotch is a brand or alcoholic beverage.
7.Marker
Flo-master will definitely cause confusion among Americans, because it is the name of the company that produced the ink. The company is no longer there, but the word stuck in Russian. In America they say marker .
8. Voice recorder
Trademark of a speech recorder. The word comes from lat. dicto – “dictate” and Greek. phone – “sound”. The trade mark was registered in 1907 by the Columbia company. In the US, Dictaphone is officially recognized as one of the oldest surviving brands.
9. Kleenex
A product from the pharmacy series – paper napkins (facial tissues) . In English-speaking countries, they have long turned into Kleenex by the name of the eponymous manufacturer, which appeared back in 1924.
10. Gym shoes
The brand of light sports shoes appeared in 1916. The brand is now owned by the Stride Rite Corporation, a sports shoe company.Today “sneakers” is the name that is applied to all types of shoes made with rubber soles.
11. Adhesive plaster
Leukoplast products were first introduced by the German company Beiersdorf in 1921. If you suddenly cut yourself or rub your foot with new sneakers – ask for sticking-plaster .
12. Toilet bowl
According to a widespread misconception that has not escaped even dictionaries, the word comes from the name of the company that produced the plumbing fixtures. In fact, the word owes its origin to the world’s first all-ceramic toilet (from the Latin unitas – “unity”), developed by the English engineer Thomas Twyford in 1883. Don’t forget to say toilet or toilet bowl in plumbing stores.
And some facts from other countries:
- In Africa, any coffee drink, regardless of brand and quality, is called “nescafe”;
- in Poland any sneakers are called “adidas”, and players are called “wolkmans”;
- In Israel, all mobile phones are called “pelephones” – from the name of the company that was the first to provide mobile services.Pelephone = magic phone;
- in America, the well-known and common name of the vacuum cleaner is “Hoover”, from the manufacturer Hoover.
90,000 Do you remember the American states? – Skyeng Magazine
In the US, discussions have begun on the possible appearance of the 51st state. It can be the federal district of Columbia, in which the capital of the country is located – the city of Washington. But which states are part of the United States now, not everyone remembers.
Medusa has come up with a test to tell the difference between a real state and a fictional one.The passage time is limited, which complicates the task. And among the wrong options, existing cities come across, so it’s very easy to get confused.
Test your knowledge, and then go learn the names of the states in English and their location on a map of the United States. You can do this on this site. Its creators have developed several lessons and quizzes to help you remember the states and their capitals.
By the way, state is not only a “state”, but also a “state”.The federal structure of the United States assumes that each state has its own sovereignty, and is headed by a governor. In fact, every American is a citizen of both the federal republic and the state in which he lives.
At the same time, four US states (we will not name them so that there are no tips for the test) use in their official names not state , but commonwealth – “commonwealth”. Literally it means “general welfare” or “wealth of society”, which is a free translation from Latin of the term res publica (“common cause”).Historically, the name was intended to highlight the difference with their previous colonial status, but it does not give any privileges.
If the tests inspire you so much that you want to see some states with your own eyes, then read our text on how to apply for an American visa (and not wait 250 days for it). And, of course, sign up for the first free lesson at Skyeng Online School to improve your English.
