Heading into the season opener, New Haven’s graduate defender Raven Linton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Notre Dame) needed just nine draw controls to tie Kathryn Campbell ’12 for the program record. By the time the final horn blew, Linton hadn’t just tied Campbell, she surpassed her career total setting a new program record with 276 total draw controls. Dating back to April 27, 2019, junior midfielder Marina Skelly (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) has scored at least one goal in each of the last eight games for the Blue and Gold. Overall in her career, she has scored at least one goal in all but four of her 23 games played, entering today’s game against Bentley with 40 career goals, inching closer to the mid-century mark.

As announced by the league prior to the season, the NE10 adopted a divisional format for 2021 – Northeast and Southwest – with all schools slated to play a 12-game conference schedule. Each team will play their divisional opponents twice. New Haven will play in the Southwest Division which is made up of seven teams including Adelphi, American International, Le Moyne, Pace, Saint Rose and Southern Connecticut. In addition to its 12-game conference schedule, this game against Bentley will be the lone non-divisional game for the Chargers this season.

CHARGERS FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL

In a poll of the conference’s 14 head coaches, the UNH women’s lacrosse team was selected to finish fourth, among the seven teams, in the Southwest Division. Adelphi received 86 points and eight of the 14 possible first place votes to take the top spot in the division. Just two points behind them was Le Moyne who scored the remaining six first place tallies. Rounding out the top three was Pace with 61 points, followed closely by the Chargers with 58 points. Southern Connecticut (38 points), American International (32) and Saint Rose (26) rounded out the division. In the Northeast Division, Bentley and Assumption finished just one point apart for first place, with the Falcons earning 79 points and five first place votes, while Assumption came in with 78 points and seven first place votes.

LINTON NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN

In its annual release of preseason All-Americans in early January, US Lacrosse Magazine included graduate defender Raven Linton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Notre Dame) among its 13-member team. Linton was one of four players in the Northeast-10 to earn the distinction. In the shortened season in 2020, Linton finished with 18 draw controls, splitting them evenly against Holy Family and New York Tech, also scoring once against each. The defender has been a force on the draw since arriving at New Haven, amassing 265 total heading into the season opener against American International. Her 265 draw controls is currently second most in program history, needing just 10 to pass Kathryn Campbell (2012-15) who finished with 274. In addition, Linton has scored nine goals, racked up 103 ground balls and caused 90 turnovers.

Following the Saturday bout with Le Moyne, the Chargers remain among the top teams in the country, earning a spot in both the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and the Nike/US Lacrosse polls. None of the standing members of our product review team are lacrosse players (sad, we know). Therefore, our own two cents was largely confined to the feel of the different sticks, their comfort and the overall build quality. In order to understand how the different sticks performed on the field or in the box we needed to obtain input from actual lacrosse players. We then took their valuable input, combined it with our experience of the materials and build quality and tossed in a dash of third party reviews to reach our final selections.

As lacrosse is something of a niche sport not as many sporting goods companies the offer lacrosse sticks as offer, say, basketballs or even baseball gloves. The market tends to be dominated by a few well-established manufacturers like STX. Although in recent years a few heavyweights like Nike and Under Armour have dipped their toes into the lacrosse stick market. As for price, lacrosse sticks tend to fall into a range between $20 and $100, with most somewhere in the middle of that range. So they’re not exactly luxury items and are reasonably accessible to just about anyone interested in the sport.

Features To Look For In Lacrosse Sticks

Buying a lacrosse stick involves weighing a number of different factors. Many advanced players will purchase the stick and the head separately and/or purchase multiple heads that they’ll swap out as they see fit. Beginners however, don’t need to think about such things and should simply concentrate on finding a complete stick that will suit their needs and allow them to acclimate themselves to sport. These are the most common features to be concerned with:

What position they’ll be playing – Most novices are not aware that lacrosse players don’t all use the same type of stick. The kind of stick you choose will in fact be heavily influenced by the position you’ll be playing. Midfielders and attackers use a lighter and shorter stick because it enables them to stay agile and doesn’t tire them out so quickly. As such the length of the shaft of the attacker’s stick will typically be about 30 inches. For defenders that may increase to 60”. This is so they are able to extend further to snag a shot. Finally, the shaft of the goalie’s stick is usually about 40 inches, give or take. They can get away with the shorter stick because the amount of area they have to cover is limited. The shorter shaft is also lighter which lets them retain a high degree of mobility and react quickly.

Shooting strings – Shooting strings run horizontally across the top of the stick’s head and are intended to ease the path for the ball as it is runs out of the pocket. Thing is, there are nearly as many opinions regarding the placement, number and material of shooting strings as there are lacrosse players. Shooting strings are said to affect the whip of the shot. “Whip” being the angle of the ball as it leaves the pocket. As a general rule the more whip a stick has the lower the ball trajectory. And attack players tend to prefer a low angle.

Weight – The weight of the stick is in large part determined by the length of the shaft. That’s one reason attackers and goalies use short lacrosse shafts. Because they don’t want the extra weight that comes with a longer shaft slowing them down. Some people train with a heavier shaft in order to build up the muscles they’re going to need in game situations and then go back to lighter sticks when the actual game starts. Certainly beginners, and in particular young beginners, are going to want to use lightweight sticks because their major concerns are going to be getting used to carrying and using the stick. Once they get comfortable they can try slightly heavier sticks if they want and see how it feels.

Pocket – Lacrosse sticks feature either a traditional lacrosse head with woven pocket or a mesh pocket. Woven pockets ruled the roost until recent years when the mesh pocket rose and pretty much took over the industry. Mesh pockets are composed of nylon webbing and tend to be very light and reasonably tough. Goalies often prefer mesh pockets because they lessen the chance of rebounds. The downside of mesh pockets is that they make it harder to control the ball while running with it. Woven pockets on the other hand tend to offer greater ball control while on the move. The depth of the pocket is also important with attackers typically opting for shallower pockets which facilitate long crisp passes and a lacrosse defense stick having a deeper pocket that doesn’t spill the ball so easily.

Head – As a general rule the stiffer the head of the lacrosse stick the more effective it will be when used for checking maneuvers. There are 3 basic types of lacrosse stick heads:

1. Universal – This head can be used by all players at all levels.
2. NFHS – These head are approved for use by youth lacrosse players and those in high school.
3. NCAA – This type of head is must have kit for those who would hope to play college lacrosse.

Keep in mind too that goalie heads are typically much larger than standard lacrosse stick heads, often measuring 10 inches or more across.

Material – The shaft on the best lacrosse sticks may be fashioned from any of a number of different materials.

• Aluminum – Beginners often choose lacrosse sticks whose shafts are made of aluminum or aluminum alloy simply because it’s relatively light and very durable. So they know they’ll get their money’s worth.
• Carbon fiber – Carbon fiber lacrosse shafts are very tough and very durable. They’re also at the upper end of the price spectrum and not recommended unless you are committed to playing lacrosse at a high level. Carbon fiber makes outstanding sticks for both defenders and attackers.
• Titanium – Titanium is another material that is both extremely light and extremely tough. It’s stronger than aluminum and quite a bit more expensive, but it makes for the lightest lacrosse shaft.
• Scandium alloy – Scandium alloy is as light as aluminum, as hard as ceramic and as strong as titanium. Scandium is typically used in the aerospace industry but is also used to fashion components for race cars and lacrosse sticks. Expect to pay.

Wednesday’s contest will be the second time the Camels (5-6, 3-1 Big South) and Highlanders (4-9, 3-1 Big South) have met this season, this time as a nonconference outing. The Camels opened Big South play with a 15-5 win over Radford on March 13.

Campbell outscored Gardner-Webb 8-3 in the second half, pulling away for a 17-11 Big South road win on Saturday. Three different Camels registered hat tricks while Alex Salim collected 10 saves in the win, improving to 6-0 all-time against the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

Lizzie Yurchak posted a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists, while Ally Heath also scored four times for the Camels.

Julianna Sanchez also recorded a hat trick with three goals, adding an assist and a school single-game record 14 draw controls. Sanchez tallied 10 draw controls in the first half alone, including six consecutive for the Camels, helping CU win 12 of the 17 first half draws. The Annapolis, Md. native has posted double-digit draw controls in five of her 11 games in 2021.

Yurchak named Big South Freshman of the Week

After collecting 14 points over two games, Campbell’s Lizzie Yurchak has been named Big South Freshman of the Week.

A freshman midfielder, Yurchak totaled six goals with eight assists as Campbell split with High Point and Gardner-Webb. The Landisville, Pa. native added nine draw controls with two ground balls and a caused turnover on the week.

Yurchak tallied eight points in Saturday’s win at Gardner-Webb, a team high this season, notching four goals and four assists to help CU put up a season-high 17 goals. Yurchak also led the Camels on the offensive end against High Point, registering six points on two goals and four assists, adding six draw controls.

This is the 10th time this season a Camel has earned Big South weekly honors this season. Yurchak is the third different Camel to be named Big South Freshman of the Week.

 
Leading the Camels

Five Camels have posted 20 or more points this season, led by Sam Bischoff and Julianna Sanchez with 30 apiece on an identical 25 goals and five assists. Sanchez adds a Big South best 101 draw controls, while Lizzie Yurchak adds 29 points on 16 goals and 13 assists, tacking on a team-high 23 ground balls with 11 caused turnovers.

Megan Matthews owns 13 goals and 13 assists, and Ally Heath has collected 16 goals, including seven in her last two games, with four assists.

Chandler Stewart has caused a team-high 12 turnovers with 19 ground balls, while Rebekah Taylor owns 19 ground balls with 11 caused turnovers. Alex Salim has a .449 save percentage and 8.8 saves per game, leading the Big South.

Scouting Radford

The Highlanders have won four straight heading into Wednesday’s game, including a 9-7 win over Longwood on Saturday.

Lindsey Carroll leads the Highlanders with 41 points on 23 goals and 18 assists, while Ava Goeller has scored 21 goals with 15 ground balls. Katie Bendrick, meanwhile, has forced 28 turnovers with 32 ground balls.

Campbell is 6-0 all-time against Radford, including a 2-0 mark on the road.

Gators Lacrosse Heads to the Elite Eight – ESPN 98.1 FM

Just eight teams remain in the 2021 NCAA DI Women’s Lacrosse Championship after Sunday’s second-round action and Gator’s lacrosse is one of them.

Florida defeated Jacksonville 17-3 to advance to the program’s sixth quarterfinal in the 12-year history. The Gators have now won 15-straight games, dating back to their March 13 loss against Jacksonville University.

Throughout the season the Gator’s lacrosse team have remained 18-2. They also went undefeated in the American Athletic Conference.

Top Scorer’s This Season

Senior, Shannon Kavanagh was the Gator’s top scorer this season with 76 goals.

Coming in second for most goals scored is senior, Brianna Harris with 47 goals and 43 assists.

Game Recap

Shortly under the first five minutes of the game, Paisley Eagan converted on a free position attempt to give Florida the advantage. Grace Haus followed with a score of her own. Shortly after, Brianna Harris put up her first goal of the day putting the Gators in the lead 3-0.

The team clearly wasn’t messing around when Maggi Hall quickly gave Florida the 4-0 advantage and forced a timeout by the Dolphins.

After the timeout is when Jacksonville tried to come back and scored their first goal against the Gators.

The Gators immediately fought back with six straight goals to take a 10-1 lead.

Jacksonville scored the final goal of the half with 3:17 left, but Florida still took an eight-goal lead into the locker room.

Kassidy Bresnahan scored her first goal of the day to give Florida the 11-2 lead within the first few minutes of the second half. The Dolphins responded five minutes later to put the game at 11-3, but that would be the team’s final goal of the day as Florida’s defense held the Dolphins scoreless for the remainder of the game.

With 15 minutes left in the game, Harris notched a hat trick of her own, followed by three-straight goals from Grace Haus to secure the 17-3 victory for the Gators.

How to glue a lacrosse shaft 2021

Step 1

Clean the paint stick shaft. Dust, dirt, and other deposits will weaken the tape’s grip on the stick. If you are using a damp cloth, make sure the stick is dry before starting the sticker.
