Start by measuring the circumference of your head finishing across the middle of your forehead right above your eyebrow and across your temples. This number (in inches) will give you the approximate size in accordance with the size chart provided bellow. Once received, you should be looking through the topmost bars of the helmet. The helmet should feel like it is “tilted” down in order to see out of these bars. You might think the neck is exposed, but lacrosse helmets are designed to protect the face and throat more so than the back of the head. Once you have done this, remove the chinstrap completely and place on your chin so that is tight to your face. While holding the chinstrap up to your face, shorten the straps so they line up with the snap buttons and tighten accordingly. This will keep your helmet from bouncing on your head.

Arai SZ-R VAS Jet Helmet Review and Road Test with Video – Champion Helmets
The Arai SZ-R VAS open face helmet from Arai is the helmet for you if you want to see everything while you ride and feel a bit of the wind on your face. Now, what’s interesting about this helmet is its long history. Since we first started with this helmet with the Arai SZ model helmet, which was released in 1988, so that’s 30 years ago. Nonetheless, this helmet is as modern as Arai helmets come it is ECE rated, and we’ll be going into the features in a little bit. With a recommended retail price of about 600 Euros, or around 660 US Dollars the Arai SZR VAS will compete with, you guessed it, the Shoei J-Cruise 2, as well as other popular jet helmets such as the Schuberth M1 Pro and the AGV K5 Jet.
Shell
First, let’s take a look at the Arai SZ-R VAS’ advanced shell. The Arai SZRVAS is made of Arai’s famous peripherally belted complex laminate construction with Arai’s super fibre laminates, which is their own special material. It’s basically a mix of organic fibres. This complex laminate construction greatly increases the shell strength and weight of the helmet. The SZ-R VAS also features a specially designed mechanically expanded fibre mat sandwiched between the shell’s layers to reinforce the area above the brow to have less thick EPS liner to give you a better view. It has 3 outer shell sizes and comes in weighing at about 1350 grams in a size M. The SZ-R VAS also features Arai’s non-adjustable Air Wing spoiler to increase the helmet’s comfort and stability and the rear diffuser system of the Arai SZ RVAS is actually coming from Arai’s premium race helmet: the Arai RX-7V. The SZ-R comes in an intermediate oval fit.
Ventilation
For ventilation, the Arai SZ-R VAS helmet will be doing well for you mainly because it’s an open face helmet. First, off for chin ventilation, there’s just the space underneath the helmet, but you should get plenty of air in through there regardless. Moving on, there’s one large new top vent which now provides, according to Arai, 11% more airflow and it has a new switch to make it easier to open and close and you get three positions to adjust it to. You’ve also got two brow vents on either side to help bring more air into the helmet. All this hot air will come out this neck exhaust vent as well as side exhausts to create an effective ventilation system.
Visor
Next up, we come to the SZ-R VAS’ visor and if you were wondering why it was called VAS, you’ll get your answer right now. VAS here stands for Variable Axis System (VAS), which is basically the face shield mechanism that allows you to raise or lower the visor while still giving a lower mounting position and, so, a smoother shape. This helmet is bringing the latest VAS design improving the protection of the visor and the helmet itself. This system is actually also present on the Arai RX7V as well. This smoother shape is part of Arai’s safety features, which include trying to create helmets as round and smooth as possible to enhance its glancing off ability. One unfortunate thing about this helmet is that the visor is pinlock prepared but the pinlock anti-fog insert must be purchased separately, which is unfortunate from such an expensive helmet. This model is also ready for the addition of an additional sun visor for Arai’s Pro Shade System which is like if you combined a sun visor and a peak so it’ll reduce glare coming from the sun from above. Now, to take off the visor first you need to lift it to the open position, be mindful of the visor lock. You’ll notice a small lever underneath the mechanism, then you just push it forward until the visor clicks out. You do the same for the other side and that’s it. To put it back in you just need to feel around a bit until they snap back in on both sides.
Liner
For the liner, on this motorcycle helmet it’s removable, washable, and antibacterial. However, in addition to this, the ear cups are water repellent to prevent rain from coming in, which is definitely helpful for comfort on a more exposed helmet like this. You’ve also got 5mm peel away pads in the temple and the cheek pads to get your ideal fit. Additionally, one nice new feature of the AraiSZRVAS is that it has a glasses friendly fit all you have to do is take the slit out from the cheek pads on either side. This helmet is also coming with speaker pockets for any communication system you may have. Now, if we take out the liner for this helmet it’s easier to take out the comfort liner first with 4 snaps spaced around the helmet. It looks good and you have this multi-layer system here to improve ventilation and comfort. Next, for the cheek pads there are two snaps at the top and back and then you slide it back and into the helmet to release it. It look snice and comfortable with a bit of mesh around the sides. You do the same for the other side. You can see that this helmet uses a double D ring chin strap. For EPS grooves this helmet doesn’t have many, but since this is a jet helmet, we’re still expecting plenty of airflow.
Arai SZ-R VAS Road Test
Now, let’s see how this helmet does on the road.
Just a quick reminder for how we measured our data. We used a thermometer placed in the J-Cruise 2’s EPS channels to find helmet’s internal temperature in degrees. For noise, we used a decibel meter taking readings based on a microphone near our rider’s ear. Lastly, we used an anemometer to take the day’s average wind speed.
When we took the helmet out it was a cool winter day, but we still had a bit of sun. Our rider travelled at about 130 km/h on long stretches of highway during our test. For the day’s wind speed, it ranged from about 110 km/h to 130 km/h. The day’s outside temperature was a cool 7 degrees Celsius while the helmet’s internal temperature was about 6 degrees, so a difference of 1 degree, which is excellent. For noise, the SZ-R VAS is a jet helmet so it is noisy, with about 107 decibels, though this is 1 decibel louder than the Shoei J-Cruise II, this again shows that there is a reason why we call these jet helmets.
Our rider found the Arai SZ-R VAS to be a very comfortable helmet and you could feel the quality of the liner. He also found it to be slightly quieter than the Shoei JCruise 2 jet helmet though it was one decibel louder. However, the biggest let down considering the high price of this helmet was it requires a drop-down sunshade to be purchased separately and the pinlock insert lens is also not included. This sun visor would have come in very useful on a day like today since there was a low winter sun and while a sun shade would have rounded this helmet out nicely, it was lacking. Now, onto our stars.
Arai SZ-R VAS Champion Helmets Ranking
For material, since the SZ-R VAS is made of Arai’s complex laminate construction and comes in 3 shell sizes, that’s 4 stars. For weight, since this is a light helmet weighing at 1350 grams that’s 5 stars. For the visor, since the Arai features a pinlock prepared visor but no insert in the box, that’s 3 stars. For ventilation, since the helmet was 1 degree cooler than the outside, which is an excellent result, that’s a full 5 stars. Unsurprisingly, for noise, this helmet only gets one star. Lastly, for comfort, we found the SZ-R VAS to be very comfortable, leading to 4 stars. This brings the SZ-R VAS to a total of 3.5 stars at 27 Euros/star. While this is a decent result, this is a high Euro/star rating considering it doesn’t come with a pinlock insert lens and you have to buy the sun shade separately. However, you are getting the enhanced Arai safety factor.
