“There are no two identical morin-khuurs, just as there are no two identical mares. The neck of this unique musical instrument is decorated with a horse’s head. And even the expression of the eyes of an animal made of wood turns out different every time,” says Yury Mikhailov, a craftsman from the village of Badagui, Bayandaevsky district.

This is the fifteenth morin khuur made by Yuri Mikhailov. All his life he dreamed of doing creative work, but every time there were things, as it seemed to him, more important.

— The family remembered my first drawings. I took my father’s passport and drew a tractor on each page with an indelible pencil. But my parents were wise people. They didn’t scold, but bought an album and pencils. This is how I started painting. I painted in the army. And then he came to Irkutsk to study as an artist, but he was late for the exams. I did not want to wait a year, I entered Ulan-Ude as a teacher of labor training. It seemed to be the closest thing to my dream. Then he worked as a teacher, got married. I was drawn to my native land, and my wife and I returned to my small homeland. Countrymen asked to work a little as the head of the local administration. This “little bit” grew into 23 years of administrative work. The children grew up. The sons became artists and sculptors. And I retired.

So, in a few sentences, Yuri Mikhailov describes his fate. Much in his life was changed by the courses organized by the department of culture of the Bayandaevsky district. Bair Tsydenov, a master from Buryatia, was invited to teach everyone how to make morin khuur. Three students completed full training: Yuri Mikhailov from the municipality of Gakhana, Vyacheslav Edaev from the village of Zagatuy and Valentin Voronov from Bayanday. Each of them has already made several instruments. Yuri Mikhailov gave the first morin khuurs to his student, the young Uligershin narrator Rodion Shantanov, to the school, to the local House of Culture. Next year, the Bayandai Music School will begin teaching this national instrument.

— Morin khuur is of national importance in Mongolia. Many people know how to play it, there are instruments in almost every family. So we need to revive this skill. I dream that I will have students, followers who will really be interested in this business, – says the master.

Interesting facts:

Morin-khuur strings in the old days were made only from horsehair. There are male and female strings. Horse hair for male strings is taken from the mane of a stallion, and for female strings – from a mare.

Never take hair from dead horses. It is believed that such strings will have a dead voice.

Now Mongolia produces synthetic strings. Horsehair strings need to be properly cut, prepared, matched to length, and weaved – a very time-consuming job. Otherwise, the production of morin-khuura has practically remained the same as it was in the old days.

It is preferable to use hard wood for morin khuur. Birch in Siberia is the hardest wood after larch. But larch is hard to process, and it is considered a cold tree. Therefore, morin-khuurs are most often made from birch.

The man had a horse, a very good one, a real friend. The rich khan liked this horse, he asked to give it back. But how to give a friend? And the man refused. The horse was killed. After that, the man had a dream in which the horse asked to save her soul. And he, in order to save his friend, made morin-khuur out of bones, skins, horse hair. It is no coincidence that the sound of this musical instrument perfectly conveys the sounds of nature.
