Understanding the Basics of Kids’ Clothing Sizes
Navigating the world of children’s clothing sizes can be a daunting task for parents and caregivers. With rapidly growing kids and a lack of universal sizing standards, finding the right fit often feels like solving a complex puzzle. This comprehensive guide aims to demystify youth apparel sizing, providing you with the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions when shopping for children’s clothes.
Why is sizing children’s clothing so challenging? The primary reasons include:
- Rapid growth rates in children
- Varying body proportions among kids of the same age
- Lack of a universal sizing standard across manufacturers
- Different sizing systems used in various countries
To overcome these challenges, it’s crucial to understand the key factors that determine proper sizing for children’s apparel.
Key Factors in Determining Children’s Clothing Sizes
When it comes to finding the right fit for kids’ clothes, relying solely on age can lead to ill-fitting garments. Instead, consider these essential factors:
- Height
- Weight
- Body measurements (chest, waist, hips)
Height and weight are particularly important for younger children, while body measurements become more relevant as kids grow older and develop more distinct body shapes. For the most accurate sizing, using a cloth measuring tape to take precise measurements of your child’s body is highly recommended.
The Importance of Accurate Measurements
Can precise measurements really make a difference in finding the right size? Absolutely. Accurate measurements allow you to compare your child’s dimensions to size charts provided by manufacturers, significantly increasing the likelihood of selecting well-fitting clothes. This approach is especially useful when shopping online, where trying on items before purchase isn’t an option.
Decoding US Children’s Clothing Size Charts
In the United States, children’s clothing sizes are typically categorized based on age, with additional considerations for height and weight. However, it’s important to note that these age-based sizes are merely guidelines and can vary significantly between brands.
Toddlers and Small Children Sizing
For toddlers and small children, US sizing often includes the following categories:
- Preemie: Up to 17 inches in height, up to 5 lbs in weight
- Newborn: 17.5 – 21 inches in height, 5.5 – 7.5 lbs in weight
- 0-3 months (0-3M): 20.5 – 23 inches in height, 6.5 – 12 lbs in weight
- 3-6 months (3-6M): 23.5 – 26 inches in height, 12.5 – 16 lbs in weight
- 6-9 months (6-9M): 26.5 – 27.5 inches in height, 16.5 – 19 lbs in weight
- 12 months: 28 – 29.5 inches in height, 19.5 – 22 lbs in weight
- 18 months: 30 – 31.5 inches in height, 22.5 – 26 lbs in weight
- 24 months/2T: 32 – 33.5 inches in height, 26.5 – 30 lbs in weight
As children grow, sizes transition to numerical values (3T, 4T, 5T) and eventually to standard numerical sizes (6, 7, 8, etc.).
Gender-Specific Sizing for Older Children
Do boys and girls require different sizing charts as they grow older? Indeed, they do. As children develop, their body shapes begin to differentiate, necessitating separate sizing guides for boys and girls. This divergence typically occurs around size 6X, after which clothing sizes are tailored to accommodate the developing physiques of each gender.
Girls’ Clothing Size Charts: Navigating Complexities
Sizing for girls’ clothing becomes more intricate as they enter pre-teen and teen years. Why is this the case? The primary reason is the varying rates at which different body parts develop during puberty. For instance, chest and hip measurements may change at different paces, making it challenging to find a single size that fits well in all areas.
Regular Sizes for Girls
A typical size chart for girls might include:
- Size 4/5 (XS): Height 39-44.5 inches, Chest 23 inches, Waist 21 inches, Hip 23 inches
- Size 6/6X (S): Height 45-48.5 inches, Chest 25-26 inches, Waist 22-23 inches, Hip 25-26.5 inches
- Size 7/8 (M): Height 49-53 inches, Chest 27-28 inches, Waist 24-25 inches, Hip 28-29.5 inches
- Size 10/12 (L): Height 53.5-57.5 inches, Chest 29-30.5 inches, Waist 26-27 inches, Hip 30.5-32 inches
- Size 14/16 (XL): Height 58-62 inches, Chest 31.5-33 inches, Waist 28-29 inches, Hip 33-34.5 inches
Slim and Plus Sizes for Girls
To accommodate different body types, many brands offer slim and plus size options for girls. These variations allow for a better fit for children who may be taller and leaner (slim sizes) or who require additional room in certain areas (plus sizes).
How do slim sizes differ from regular sizes? Slim sizes typically have a narrower waist and hip measurement compared to regular sizes of the same height. Plus sizes, conversely, provide more room in the chest, waist, and hip areas while maintaining the same height range as regular sizes.
Boys’ Clothing Size Charts: Simplifying the Process
While boys’ sizing can also be complex, it generally follows a more straightforward pattern compared to girls’ sizing. This is primarily due to fewer variations in body shape development during puberty.
Regular Sizes for Boys
A typical size chart for boys might include:
- Size 4/5 (XS): Age 4-6, Height 39-44.5 inches, Chest 23-24 inches, Waist 21-21.5 inches
- Size 6/7 (S): Age 6-8, Height 45-49.5 inches, Chest 25-26 inches, Waist 22.5-23.5 inches
- Size 8 (M): Age 8-9, Height 50-52 inches, Chest 26.5 inches, Waist 24-24.5 inches
- Size 10/12 (L): Age 8-10, Height 52.5-58 inches, Chest 27-28 inches, Waist 25.5-26.5 inches
- Size 14/16 (XL): Age 10-12, Height 58.5-64 inches, Chest 29.5-31 inches, Waist 27.5-29 inches
Slim Sizes for Boys
Like girls’ clothing, boys’ apparel often comes in slim sizes to accommodate leaner builds. These sizes maintain the same height and age ranges as regular sizes but feature narrower waist measurements.
International Size Conversions: A Global Perspective
When shopping for children’s clothing internationally or from brands based in other countries, understanding size conversions becomes crucial. However, it’s important to note that these conversions are often approximations, as sizing standards can vary significantly between countries and even between different brands within the same country.
Age-Based vs. Height-Based Sizing
How do international sizing systems differ? One key distinction is the basis for sizing:
- American, British, and Australian sizes typically use age as a primary reference
- European sizes are generally based on height measurements
This fundamental difference can lead to discrepancies when converting between sizing systems. For instance, a size 8 in the US might roughly correspond to a size 128 in European sizing, which indicates a height of 128 cm (about 50 inches).
Approximate International Size Conversion Chart
While not exact, the following chart provides a general guide for converting between different international sizing systems:
US Size | UK Size | EU Size | Age (Years) |
---|---|---|---|
2T | 2-3 | 92 | 2 |
3T | 3-4 | 98 | 3 |
4 | 4-5 | 104 | 4 |
5 | 5-6 | 110 | 5 |
6 | 6-7 | 116 | 6 |
7 | 7-8 | 122 | 7 |
8 | 8-9 | 128 | 8 |
10 | 9-10 | 134 | 9-10 |
12 | 11-12 | 146 | 11-12 |
14 | 13-14 | 152 | 13-14 |
Remember that these conversions are approximate and may vary between brands. Always refer to specific brand size charts when available for the most accurate sizing information.
Tips for Successful Kids’ Clothing Shopping
Armed with knowledge about sizing charts and measurement techniques, how can you ensure successful shopping experiences for children’s clothing? Consider these practical tips:
- Always measure your child before shopping, especially if it’s been a while since their last measurement.
- Refer to brand-specific size charts whenever possible, as sizing can vary significantly between different manufacturers.
- When shopping online, check customer reviews for insights on how the clothing fits compared to the size chart.
- Consider buying adjustable clothing items, such as pants with expandable waistbands, to accommodate growth.
- For rapidly growing children, consider sizing up and using temporary alterations to extend the life of the garment.
- Remember that comfort is key – a little room to grow is better than clothing that’s too tight.
- Keep in mind the season when purchasing clothes, as bulkier winter wear may require sizing up.
The Importance of Try-Ons
While size charts and measurements are invaluable tools, nothing beats trying on clothes when possible. Why is this so crucial? Every child’s body is unique, and even garments in the “correct” size may not fit comfortably or flatter your child’s physique. Trying on clothes allows you to assess not just the size, but also the cut, style, and overall suitability of the garment for your child.
The Future of Children’s Clothing Sizes
As the clothing industry evolves, what changes might we see in children’s sizing? Several trends and innovations are emerging:
- Increased use of body scanning technology for more accurate sizing recommendations
- Growing adoption of gender-neutral sizing options
- More brands offering extended size ranges to accommodate diverse body types
- Potential development of more standardized international sizing systems
These advancements aim to simplify the sizing process and provide better-fitting clothes for children of all shapes and sizes. However, until a universal standard is adopted, understanding size charts and knowing your child’s measurements will remain crucial skills for any parent or caregiver shopping for kids’ clothes.
In conclusion, while navigating children’s clothing sizes can be challenging, armed with the right knowledge and tools, you can make informed decisions and find well-fitting clothes for the young ones in your life. Remember that sizes are just guidelines, and the most important factors are comfort, proper fit, and allowing room for growth. By staying informed about sizing standards, keeping up-to-date with your child’s measurements, and using the tips provided in this guide, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle the world of youth apparel sizing with confidence.
Size Charts for Kids: Clothing, Shirt, Pants, etc.
Shopping for kids clothes can be a real nightmare. Kids grow up fast, and it gets really hard trying to monitor their current kids clothes size because they keep on changing. It also doesn’t help that there is no required universal children’s clothing size guide that all clothing manufacturers and retailers must follow. To have a fighting chance against this huge predicament, this site provides a helpful guide to finding the right fit for the most common types of kids’ clothes.
Kids Sizes at a Glance
- When it comes to finding the right fit, it’s far better to take your child’s height and weight into consideration than just simply relying on age. However, the best way is to take accurate measurements of your kid’s body using a cloth measuring tape. You may then refer to a size chart to know the corresponding clothing size to your child’s measurements.
- American sizes, along with British and Australian clothing sizes, are traditionally based on age. The rest of Europe, on the other hand, have sizing guides based on height.
- International size conversions are merely approximations as apparel companies tend to make clothes based on their own version of standard sizing.
- In the United States, clothes for toddlers and small children use age to name different size classifications. The sizes are typically based on the weight and height of the child but specific measurements for the chest, waist, and hip are also provided.
- For older kids, the size guide for males is different from the one used for females.

Children’s Jeans & Pants Size Charts
To find well-fitting pants or jeans for your child, measure the fullest part of his hips, his natural waist (near the bellybutton), his inseam (situated along the inside leg; measured from the center of the crotch to the floor), and his height. Match your child’s measurements to the specific size charts of the clothing brand you patronize. Options are not limited to regular sizes. Some retailers offer slim sizes as well as plus (“husky” for boys) sizes. The ideal pants should not pucker around the crotch area and must have extra breathing room around the waist.

Kids Clothing Size Conversion Chart
International clothing sizes have different measurements from each other. American, UK, and Australian clothing sizes are traditionally the same because they are all based on age. European clothing sizes for kids, on the other hand, are different because they are based on height. Conversion charts are helpful when it comes determining your child’s clothing size in other countries.
US Size | Child Age | Height (Inch) | Height (CM) | EU Size | UK Size |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
2T | 2 | 36–38 | 92–98 | 92–98 | 2–3 |
3T–4T | 3–4 | 38–41 | 98–104 | 98–104 | 3–4 |
5 | 4–5 | 41–43 | 104–110 | 104–110 | 4–5 |
6 | 5–6 | 43–46 | 110–116 | 110–116 | 5–6 |
6X–7 | 6–7 | 46–48 | 116–122 | 116–122 | 6–7 |
7–8 | 7–8 | 48–50 | 122–128 | 122–128 | 7–8 |
9–10 | 8–9 | 50–53 | 128–134 | 128–134 | 8–9 |
10 | 9–10 | 53–55 | 134–140 | 134–140 | 9–10 |
11 | 10–11 | 55–57 | 140–146 | 140–146 | 10–11 |
14 | 11–12 | 57–60 | 146–152 | 146–152 | 11–12 |
However, keep in mind that these size conversions are merely approximations as apparel companies tend to make clothes based on their own version of standard sizing.
What is large in one brand may be converted as XL in another. A US size 2T may be theoretically the same as the European size 92-98 cm but in reality, it may be a bit bigger than the latter.
To get the most accurate conversion of clothing sizes, rely on sizing charts that contain specific body measurements. All you would need to do is to convert from one unit of measure (inches) to another (centimeters).
How to measure Kids Sizes
Clothing sizes vary and for children’s apparel, they are usually labeled according to the child’s age. However, when it comes to finding the right fit, it’s far better to take your child’s height and weight into consideration than just simply relying on age. The best way, of course, is to take accurate measurements of your kid’s body using a cloth measuring tape.
Children’s measurements should only be taken over their bare skin or while they are wearing skin-tight clothes. For tops and dresses, record your child’s chest, waist, and sometimes hip measurements. For dress shirts, including neck and sleeve measurements.
For bottoms like trousers and jeans, measure the waist, hips, and inseam. You may then refer to a size chart to know the corresponding clothing size to your child’s measurements. Clothing sizes found in generic charts can be a good reference but it’s best to rely on the size chart of specific brands or retailers that you patronize.
Is there such a thing as standard children clothing sizes?
Various countries have established their own standards when it comes to classifying clothing sizes. However, in the case of the United States, there is no hard-and-fast rule when it comes to standardizing and classifying clothing sizes in the ready-to-wear clothing industry. The U.S. government once tried to establish a system in 1958 and even made it a commercial standard, but it was eventually degraded to a voluntary standard until it was abolished altogether. Nowadays, clothing brands enjoy some degree of liberty in defining the measurement range of their clothing sizes though many also observe the voluntary standards recommended by private organization ASTM International. However, with more countries opening its doors to other nations, there is now a serious call for international standardization when it comes to clothes, with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) at the helm in producing said standards. Unfortunately, there are those who believe that setting a standard is difficult because people are growing bigger now, which means clothing sizes should be getting bigger too.
Can you rely on sizes?
The truth is size charts today are not universal and clothing sizes are inconsistent. As for whether you can still rely on clothing sizes, the answer is you can, but not as much as you may have hoped. If you already have specific clothing brands you are loyal to, then you can easily use their sizing charts as guides for buying clothes for your child. However, if you’re unfamiliar with a brand and relying on a generic size chart in selecting clothes for your kid, then you may find clothing sizes to be not as helpful. In the end, it’s better to have something to rely on even if it’s only reliable up to a certain extent than not to have any guide at all.
4T vs 4 Kids’ Clothes: What’s the Difference? (Explained)
Keeping your kids clothed is actually quite a challenge.
They grow so fast, and the stuff you bought them last season will be way too small by the time the weather will allow them to wear it again.
So you’ll find yourself refreshing their wardrobe often.
Sizing is usually pretty simple, but it gets a little tricky once your kid is about 4 years old.
What’s the difference between 4T vs 4 clothes for kids?
The difference between 4T and 4 clothes sizes depends heavily on the store and brand you’re shopping, but usually, size 4 will be a tiny bit larger than 4T — around one to two inches longer for pants, and wide enough to accommodate 1-2 more pounds of weight.
In practice, the difference is very small and most kids will be able to wear both.
Some sources claim toddler clothes (Ts) have extra room for diapers compared to size 4, but I have not found this to be the case in my own experience. 4T pants and tights are quite fitted on my daughter, as most 4-year-olds are pretty well potty-trained.
But let’s dive in a little bit deeper to toddler vs youth sizing and the differences you can expect to find when you shop!
What is 4T? (How toddler clothes sizing works)
Once your baby outgrows baby clothes (usually measured in months, like 24M), he or she will be ready for toddler sizes.
Woohoo!
Toddler sizing couldn’t be simpler.
The size numbers are followed by a T, indicating they’re meant for toddlers, and align pretty closely to your child’s age.
For example, a 2T pair of pants should fit most 2-year-olds.
A 3T should fit most 3-year-olds.
And so on.
4T clothing is meant to fit toddlers who are around 4 years old.
The exact sizing will vary a little bit depending on which brand or store you shop. And of course, if your child is large or small for his age, you may need to shop up or down a size.
(Size 4T is usually for kids around 40″ tall and weighing about 35 pounds, give or take.)
But, in general, you’ll find 4-year-olds wearing 4T clothing most of the time.
(The next and final stop on the toddler sizing train is 5T, the biggest available.)
Easy, right?
What is size 4? (How kids clothes sizing works)
When your child starts outgrowing his or her 3Ts, you start to enter a grey area of clothing sizes.
They’re definitely ready to move into 4Ts and beyond, but they might also be ready to start wearing “big kid” or youth sizes.
Kid clothing sizes usually start at size 4 and go all the way up 14-18 at most stores.
The sizes still roughly correlate to a child’s age (4 for 4-year-olds, 10 for 10-year-olds, etc.), but as kids begin to grow at different rates, you’ll find yourself moving up or down the size chart a lot.
A size 4 is considered, at most stores, to be an extra small size — meant for the smallest of big kids.
It’s almost remarkably similar to a size 4T, which is meant for older toddlers.
There’s an overlap of the toddler and kid’s size charts once your kid hits 4 years old, which is what seems to cause all the confusion!
Petite people will know this problem well.
You may be able to wear large youth clothes or small adult clothes, depending on the exact sizing and fit of each clothing item.
Specific Examples of 4T vs 4
The main thing to know?
4T and 4 are, at most stores, very, very similar in size.
Both should fit average-sized 4-year-olds just fine.
But for a better comparison of the two, here’s are the most exact measurements I could find of both sizes at popular children’s stores.
4T vs 4 at Carters
Who doesn’t love Carter’s?!
If you’re like my wife and me, you’ll practically live here the first year or so when shopping for your newborn.
But it’s great for toddler clothes, as well.
4T apparel at Carter’s is meant to fit a toddler 39-41.5″ tall and weighing 34-37.5 pounds.
Size 4 in kids or youth, on the other hand, is for kids 40-42.5″ tall and weighing 34-38.5 pounds.
So a 4 is about an inch longer and a pound “thicker” on average at Carter’s, according to the brand’s official size charts.
Unfortunately, Carter’s doesn’t give exact inseam or waist measurements on their website, but the height and weight ranges give you a good idea of how the clothes are likely to fit.
4T vs 4 at Children’s Place
Children’s Place, God bless them, gives extremely exact measurements on their official website.
So here they are:
A size 4T at Children’s Place is meant to fit a child around 4 years old, between 38-41″ tall, and weighing between 35-39 pounds.
4T shirts at Children’s Place have a 21-22″ chest while 4T pants feature a 21.5-22″ waist.
A size 4, at least according to CP’s own size charts, accommodates children of the same age and size range as 4T.
The chest and waist measurements are the same on 4T and 4 clothes here.
The inseam on a 4 is 15.5-17″, which is exactly the same as a 4T.
So in other words, at least according to the official size charts from Children’s Place, there’s no difference between a 4T and a 4.
You can more or less feel free to ignore the T when shopping, but of course, the fit of each individual item might vary, so try things on before you buy!
4T vs XS (4-5) at Gap Kids
Gap Kids doesn’t have a size 4, but most 4-5-year-olds will wear an XS here.
Here’s how the sizes stack up according to their size charts:
4-year-old clothes at Gap will fit kids weighing between 36-40 pounds and who are 39-42″ tall.
XS clothes at Gap fit kids weighing between 33-48 pounds and who are 39-45″ tall
Most 4-year-olds should be able to wear XS at Gap. The main difference here is that XS will give them a little more room to grow versus wearing 4T.
Wrapping Up
The difference between size 4 (XS) and 4T is so small you might as well be splitting hairs.
At some stores, the sizing is exactly the same.
At most others, however, expect a size 4 to have just a little bit of extra growing room versus a 4T.
The pants will often be 1-2 inches longer, and the waist/chest measurements may be an extra inch or two, as well, to accommodate a growing child.
I would urge you to try on specific outfits before you buy, because you never really know how something will fit until you do!
(At least try on before you wash the clothes if you ordered online!)
In any case, I hope this helps.
Let me know if you have any questions below and I’ll do my best to help.
Good luck, parents!

How to Take Your Child’s Measurements
They key to finding the best fit is by being accurate. Make sure to take your child’s measurements so that you can easily compare them to different brand size charts. With your pen, paper and tape measure ready, take the following measurements.
Have your child stand up straight, with feet close together.
- Chest – With your child’s arms relaxed, measure around the fullest part of the chest.
- Waist – Wrap the tape measure around the smallest part of the waist. Keep the tape slightly loose to allow for some breathing room.
- Hips – Measure at the fullest part of the hips.
TIP: It is better to measure over bare skin or skin-tight clothes for more accuracy.
Tips for Finding the Right Size
#1. Take note of sizing. This can never be emphasized enough. Taking a little time and effort to be mindful of sizing is key to smart shopping. In this case, it is even more important as Asian sizes tend to run smaller than US sizes. It is safe to assume that a size medium in Asian size is actually a size small by US standards. Keep this in mind when buying clothes for your child, who is still growing.
#2. Sizes vary from shop to shop so make sure to check their individual size guides. Especially when shopping online, you should check if a particular brand has its own size charts. Measurements and sizing standards may vary to suit every manufacturer, so don’t just rely on general sizes.
#3. Figure out your child’s US size for easier comparison. As a general rule, you’ll have to determine your kid’s US size as this is the one frequently used by many international brands. Once you have this, everything else will just be an easy comparison to various international sizing standards.
What to Know About Different Asian Kids Sizes
Kids Sizes Japan
Children’s sizes in Japan are usually labelled by the height of the child in centimeters (cm). A size 60 for example would be a child that is 60cm tall or up to 3 months in age, a size 70 is an infant up to 6 months, size 80 is up to one year old and size 90 is usually for kids up to two years. It is still necessary though to measure your child depending on the height, weight, and chest size.
Kids Sizes
Korea
Children’s clothing in Korea is sized much differently than the way it is measured in the US. For infants for example, sizing chart begins at size 50, which is for a child the age of 0 to 3 months. Sizes increase in intervals of 10. Size 60 is for ages 3 to 6 months; 70 is for ages 6 to 9 months; 80 is for ages 9 to 12 months; 90 is for ages 12 to 18 months, and 100 is for ages 18 to 24 months. For toddler clothing in Korean sizes, the sizes continue in the same way infant sizes with increases, through 10s. The easier way to do it is to estimate that each year, your child’s size will go up by one. Children age 2 to 3 years old has an average size of 100; age between 3 and 4’s average 110; ages 4 to 5 use size 120; ages 5 to 6 average size 130; 6 to 7 take a 140; 7 to 8 wear a 150 and 8 to 10 average size 160.
Kids Sizes
China
The clothes sizing system in China can be quite confusing. They use a variety of systems depending on the item, as well as whether the clothing is intended for domestic use or export. The sizes of children’s clothes are usually labelled XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, etc but there are also companies that label the children’s sizes by year, like 1Y, 2Y, 3Y, 4Y, etc; and also by height (with cm or without it), like 80cm, 90cm, 100cm, 110cm; and others also go with numbers like 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.
Chinese sizes also run smaller than counterparts. A Chinese “large” for example is typically smaller than an American small. For Americans, add 2 to 3 sizes up for the adjusted size.
Kids Sizes Vietnam
Vietnam is a booming textile hub in Asia, and although many international brands have manufacturing factories there, it is hard to determine what measurement locals use for their kids clothing. Note that the Vietnamese people, even kids in general are tiny. Their clothing markets seem to be mainly for locals so it is best to try on the clothes before buying, but if you have to buy online, always opt for the bigger size.
Kids Sizes Malaysia
Malaysia uses age as main guide for kids size. But your child’s height (in centimeters) is also important to know exactly which size to buy from a Malaysian brand or if you need a smaller size or one size up.
Kids Sizes
India
The standard size chart for Indian apparel is mostly based on the length of the skirt/pants. Sizes still varies by style and company. Please make sure to order appropriate size based on your child’s measurement and if uncertain, it may be better to order one size up.
Asian Kids Shoe Size Chart
Children’s shoe sizes vary greatly by country. The US and UK sizes for kids shoes are off from one another by a half-size and Europe and Japan use an entirely different system to measure shoe sizes. Keep in mind that if you have children who are almost fully grown, the children’s shoe sizes only go up to 13, just a half size before entering adult shoe sizing of 1 to 2. Use the charts below as guide to convert US, UK kids shoes to Asian sizes.

Chinese shoe size to US shoe
Shoe sizes are also sized differently depending on the place of manufacturing. In terms of children’s shoes from China, they are labelled in numbers, although some styles carry a different sizing metrics. A US 4C for example is a 22 in China, a 10C is a 25.5, and a 13 is a 30. You may refer to online charts to convert Chinese shoe size to US shoe size.

90,000 size chart by age, size range of clothing for children in Russia
Children’s size chart was created to help parents. It helps to correctly determine the size of the child and choose the right clothes. The table takes into account the main criteria, such as age, weight, height, gender. Tables are compiled taking into account the type of clothing: top, shirts, trousers, dresses, skirts, shorts, underwear, hats, shoes.
The tables are easy to understand and study. Their significant drawback is that the data entered into them may differ due to the individual characteristics of the growth and structure of the baby’s body.
The ratio of age, weight and height
The table of children’s clothing sizes for boys and girls takes into account the most important parameters of the child: age and height in centimeters. You can find out about the approximate size of the baby from the table, just by choosing his age. The table is focused on the growth of the child. It is easy to pick up clothes and tights on it. International sizes are indicated not in numbers, but in letters: S, M, SM.
If you want to know more about the clothes, carefully study the information on the label. For clothing sizes 24, a child’s height is from 74 to 80 centimeters. These things are geared towards babies six to nine months old; 86 size is suitable for babies with a height of 82 to 86 centimeters; sizes 74-110 are suitable for children with a height of 69 to 110 centimeters. For height 146, you should choose clothes in size 146; for a height of 152 cm, things are selected taking into account individual characteristics.
Monthly table for newborns, convenient and versatile. It is ideal for children up to four years of age. Chinese size charts differ from European ones. In them, manufacturers add a letter to the number: 2t, 3t, 4t, 8t, 10t, 4a, 24m. It is simple to decipher these designations: the number in front of the letter indicates the age of the child. In foreign online stores, you can often find tables that use height and age as a yardstick.
If you choose clothes for babies under one year old, it is not enough to know his height.
Manufacturers often indicate weight in tables. This data makes it much easier to find the perfect fit for your sliders. If the size indicated in the table is non-standard, then you cannot do without hints here.
Size 110 means that the item is intended for a child with a height of 110 cm.Difficulties arise with such parameters, because a child of such height can be of different builds, thin or overweight. If clothes are purchased on the site, difficulties may arise due to the lack of automatic sizing. In this case, when ordering, indicate your wishes in the comments, otherwise the seller will send a random item.
Chinese and European manufacturers, starting from the age of 7 years, indicate the sizes only in letters: S (small), M (medium), L (large).Try not to confuse these sizes with adults, choose them on a separate table. There are tables for shoes and other clothing items. Each manufacturer (not counting large brands) tries to compile tables taking into account the individual characteristics of production and accepted standards.
Experts advise taking measurements from the baby before buying.
If the child has passed the age of five, you can choose clothes with him in the store with a fitting.During the fitting, do not scold the child, otherwise buying clothes will injure him. If parents buy things without trying on, it is recommended to study the structural features of the baby, focus on weight and age. Remember that today’s children are larger than their parents and grandparents were once their childhood.
Size range for babies from 0 to 1 year old
Babies from 0 to 1 year old gain weight and grow quickly.Buying clothes for such crumbs can be difficult due to the fact that each manufacturer has the right to sew clothes according to their own standards. Large Russian brands create clothes for children in accordance with GOST. Newborns need comfortable clothing.
The most popular items are overalls, undershirts, bodysuits, hats, caps, sliders, socks, tights, mittens, mittens.
Overalls for newborns are selected by height. They have a loose fit. When choosing a jumpsuit, keep in mind that the baby is growing rapidly, so buy a thing for growth. When buying rompers, panties and T-shirts, pay attention to the sizing system. The numbers 18, 20, 22 are indicated on Russian-made children’s clothes. Buy sliders taking into account the baby’s height and chest girth. Don’t be afraid to take baby items one size larger.
To determine the size of the socks, the length of the foot will help. Correctly measured from heel to the tip of the big toe. There is a separate table for socks sizes from 0 to 2 years old. Tights for children are selected taking into account the height in centimeters. If the child has a large leg, it is better to take tights that stretch. For a well-fed baby, tights one size larger than their real age are suitable. Remember that different manufacturers may have their own size grid.
The size of hats and caps is determined by the length of the head circumference. Correct measurement: across the eyebrows, above the ears and to the back of the head. The sizes of caps are different. They can be designated by a number and a letter, be single, double. Double sizes are more common: 36-38, 42-44. In the case of hats for a month-old baby, you should choose hats by size, and not by growth. The size of mittens and mittens is determined by the length and girth of the palm, excluding the thumb.
Size chart for teenagers
Teenage age for boys and girls is 12-17 years old.
The main indicator of correct size in adolescents is height in centimeters. It is measured in a standing position, from crown to heel. Weight plays a role in the choice of clothing if the child has a non-standard equipment. Also, for the correct determination of the size, measurements of the hips, waist and leg length are required.
For girls
Taking into account the fact that physical development for each child takes place at an individual pace, it is difficult to choose clothes strictly according to the table.
After 13 years, it is easier to find a correspondence between the data in the tables and the parameters. Remember that the separation between women’s and men’s clothing begins at the age of six. Teenage tables have a gender division: for girls and boys, as well as by type of clothing.
For boys
Taking measurements
Buying clothes for a child is a complex and responsible process.Parents know how difficult it is to choose things for rapidly growing children. Do you want to correctly size your clothes? Make correct measurements. Children under 2 years of age should be measured lying down, and after 2 years old – standing.
All measurements are taken with a soft tape measure. The sizes of the hips and chest are determined by the most prominent points. When measuring the waist, the child should not strain and draw in the abdomen. The body should be as relaxed as possible. Sleeve length is measured from the shoulder joint to the tip of the thumb.
Correctly selected shirt, sweater, jacket sits on the figure, and when raising hands does not lift up and does not expose the body. The crotch of jeans or trousers is measured from the groin to the ankle. To determine the size of the headgear, the head circumference is measured from the protruding point of the back of the head and the eyebrow arch. Do not pull the tape too tight during measurements.
In many tables, head circumference is indicated in centimeters with a small error. Children’s socks are tailored to the size of the shoe. Use tape to measure your foot from heel to the tip of your big toe (largest protrusion). Children’s tights are selected according to foot size, leg length and age.
As you go through the sizing charts, keep in mind that each country has its own system. In America, clothes are chosen based on age with average parameters. In Europe, the dimensions of the chest, hips, waist and height are taken as the basis.
Clothes from Russia
Russian sizes are understandable for the buyer of children’s clothing. Domestic manufacturers sew clothes in accordance with GOST, which makes it possible not to make mistakes during the purchase. If the manufacturer is conscientious and sews things according to the established standard, then winter, summer, outerwear, dresses, and also the bottom will be easy for the child to pick up from the table. Russian sizes are based on metric data to help you make the right choice.
The Russian dimensional grid differs in that it is universal and includes height, age, weight, volume, crotch length, sleeves. The table is designed for children aged 1 month to 14 years.
Dimensional chart of European sizes
European sizes, including English sizes, differ from domestic ones. It is easier for kids under four years old to buy clothes than older kids. With active growth, the difference between boys and girls becomes pronounced, so gender tables should be used.
If you buy clothes made in Europe, take clothes one size larger. Children grow up quickly, so it is economically profitable for parents to buy clothes for growth.
The European size range exists separately for boys and girls between the ages of three and seventeen. There is also a separate table for children from 0 to 3 years old. The tables include information on Russian size, age, height, bust and data on European, British and American sizes.Domestic and European dimensional grid is almost identical. The only difference is that in Russia, clothes are created in accordance with GOST and are designed for thin children, while European things sit on the figure freely and tend to oversize.
Chinese size ruler
The most important difference between the Russian dimensional grid and the Chinese one is that domestic manufacturers, when creating clothes, are guided by the growth of the child, and the Chinese – by age.Given the fact that there are many Chinese products in stores and on counters, it is necessary to understand the range of foreign sizes. The Chinese size range is smaller than the Russian one: only four sizes for babies up to one year old.
Sometimes you can find the letter “t” on things made in China. This means that the clothes are intended for children over two years of age.
The number in front of the letter means the child’s age, for example, “3m”.
The size grid of Chinese clothing is for three categories: children of two years old, boys from three to seventeen years old, girls from three to fifteen years old. The tables show Russian size, Chinese size, age, height, chest girth.
Dimensional grid of Turkish clothes
Clothes and footwear of Turkish production are distinguished by high quality of tailoring and materials. In Russia, things from Turkey are highly valued.
If you buy clothes for a child in the country of production, then you can buy a high-quality and durable item for little money. If you are afraid to make a mistake with Turkish sizes, choose clothes taking into account weight and height for a 4-5 year old child.
Usually, Turkish manufacturers indicate on the label for what height this or that thing is intended.
Older children need to take measurements, but this is quite tedious, so most parents take their child to the mall and try on clothes before buying.
Tables have been specially developed for these purposes. Turkish manufacturers have a division of sizes for children from 0 to 2 years old, boys from 3 to 17 years old and girls from 3 to 15 years old. Turkish charts include country sizes, baby’s age, height and bust.
Rules for choosing clothes of a foreign manufacturer
When choosing foreign-made clothing, follow some rules:
- Clothes from France are small, so take clothes one size larger.
- Clothes from Italy and Germany are larger.
- If the Chinese clothing is factory made, the size chart can be trusted. Fakes often do not adhere to a dimensional grid.
- When measuring height, hip and chest circumference, the child should be wearing underwear.
- Be sure to wash your clothes after purchase. Remember that clothes made from natural fabrics shrink when washed in hot water.

In them, manufacturers add a letter to the number: 2t, 3t, 4t, 8t, 10t, 4a, 24m.It is simple to decipher these designations: the number in front of the letter indicates the age of the child.
