Tournament Favorites and Teams to Watch
As with previous years, several teams enter the tournament as strong contenders for the gold medal:
Canada
As the host nation and perennial powerhouse, Canada always brings a talented roster to the World Juniors. With home ice advantage (albeit without a home crowd), they’ll be looking to defend their 2020 gold medal.
United States
The Americans are considered by many to be the favorites this year. Coming off a strong showing in the 2021 tournament, they’ll be aiming to capture back-to-back gold medals for the first time in their history.
Russia
Always a formidable opponent, Russia has consistently reached the medal rounds in recent years. They’ll be hungry to improve upon their silver medal finish from 2020.
Finland
The Finns have become a major force in international junior hockey, winning gold in 2014, 2016, and 2019. They’re sure to bring another competitive team to this year’s tournament.
Sweden
With a track record of developing top NHL talent, Sweden is always a threat to reach the podium. They’ll be looking to bounce back after a disappointing quarterfinal exit in 2021.
Impact of COVID-19 on the Tournament
The ongoing global pandemic continues to affect international sporting events, and the World Juniors is no exception. Some key changes and considerations for the 2022 tournament include:
- No spectators allowed in the arena
- Strict bubble protocols for players, coaches, and staff
- Potential for last-minute schedule changes or adjustments
- Increased emphasis on health and safety measures
Despite these challenges, organizers are committed to delivering a high-quality tournament that showcases the best young hockey talent in the world.
Players to Watch in the 2022 World Juniors
While team success is the ultimate goal, the World Juniors also serves as a platform for individual players to shine on the international stage. Here are some top prospects to keep an eye on during the tournament:
Owen Power (Canada)
The first overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, Power is a towering defenseman with exceptional skating ability and hockey IQ. He’ll be a key player on Canada’s blue line.
Matty Beniers (United States)
Selected second overall by the Seattle Kraken in 2021, Beniers is a dynamic two-way center who could play a major role in the U.S. team’s quest for gold.
Matvei Michkov (Russia)
Though only 17 years old, Michkov is already drawing comparisons to Russian superstars of the past. His elite scoring ability could make him one of the tournament’s breakout stars.
Simon Edvinsson (Sweden)
A towering defenseman with smooth skating and puck-handling skills, Edvinsson was drafted sixth overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2021. He’ll be counted on to anchor Sweden’s defense.
Brad Lambert (Finland)
Considered one of the top prospects for the 2022 NHL Draft, Lambert’s speed and skill make him a player to watch in Finland’s forward group.
These players, along with many others, will be looking to make their mark and potentially boost their professional prospects with strong performances at the World Juniors.
Historical Context and Tournament Legacy
The World Junior Championship has a rich history dating back to its unofficial beginnings in 1974. Since becoming an official IIHF event in 1977, the tournament has grown into one of the most anticipated events on the international hockey calendar.
Over the years, the World Juniors has served as a launching pad for numerous players who have gone on to become NHL stars. Names like Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby, and Connor McDavid all made their mark on the tournament before achieving greatness at the professional level.
In terms of historical success, Canada leads all nations with 18 gold medals, followed by Russia/Soviet Union with 13, and Finland with 5. The United States has seen increased success in recent years, capturing gold in 2017 and 2021.
The tournament’s popularity has grown exponentially, particularly in hockey-mad Canada where it has become a holiday tradition for many families. Even without fans in attendance this year, the World Juniors promises to deliver the excitement and drama that has made it a beloved event for hockey fans around the globe.
Conclusion and Tournament Predictions
As we look ahead to the 2022 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, anticipation is building for what promises to be an exciting tournament. While the United States enters as the favorite, the competitive nature of international junior hockey means that several teams have a realistic shot at capturing gold.
Canada will be motivated to reclaim the title on home ice, while perennial contenders like Russia, Finland, and Sweden can never be counted out. Dark horse teams like Germany and Slovakia will be looking to pull off upsets and make deep runs in the tournament.
Regardless of the outcome, the 2022 World Juniors will provide a showcase for the future stars of professional hockey. For many of these young players, strong performances in this tournament could be the springboard to successful NHL careers.
As the puck drops on December 25th, hockey fans around the world will be tuning in to witness the passion, skill, and drama that makes the World Junior Championship one of the most exciting events in sports. The US sealed their spot in the final in dramatic fashion yesterday, beating Finland 4-3 courtesy of an Arthur Kaliyev goal with just over a minute left on the clock. That came after the Finns fought back from a 3-1 deficit entering the final period, and sees the United States get set to face its biggest rival in the sport: northerly neighbors Canada.
The Canadian team are the defending champs, having beaten Russia in last year’s WJC final and then besting them again in Monday’s first World Juniors semi-final game to qualify for the gold medal game again. They’re arguably the favorites to make it back-to-back titles tonight in Edmonton, with Canada having won the World Juniors a record 10 times to date.
However, when these two countries last met in a WJC final back in 2017, the USA prevailed 5-4 in a shootout – Troy Terry slotting past Carter Hart to win it all for America in the most memorable way possible.

World Juniors 2021: Time, TV channel, live stream, where, when, schedule
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. The IIHF World Junior Championship is here.
Once again, the best under-20 hockey players from around the globe will convene to determine which nation has the best crop of juniors. This time the setting is Canada, where the hometown team is aiming for back-to-back gold. The odds-on favorite entering the 12-day event boasts a roster jam-packed with NHL first-round draft picks — 20 of 25 — and NHL-caliber talent, including team captain and Blackhawks forward Kirby Dach.
Don’t expect this to be a cakewalk, however; Team Canada will face stiff competition from Russia, which it defeated in the gold-medal game last year; a highly skilled American squad; and a Swedish roster that sports an Oilers prospect, Philip Broberg, as captain.
WORLD JUNIORS: Breakdown of every NHL team’s prospects playing
As always, the World Juniors are expected to be packed with big goals, big saves and ever bigger wins. With national pride on the line, the battle for gold will be fierce. Here’s all you need to know about the tournament.
Where is the 2021 World Junior Championship?
The 2021 World Junior Championship will take place in Edmonton, Alta.
This year’s tournament originally was scheduled to be held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alta., but the need for a secure bubble led Hockey Canada to move the entire event to where the NHL played summer hockey. The WJC is set to hit the ice in both cities, with fans — fingers crossed — in 2022.
This year marks the third time Edmonton will host World Juniors games. In 1995, Canada topped the podium; in 2012, Sweden won and the Canadians finished third in Alberta’s capital.
When will the 2021 World Junior Championship take place?
Because teams are playing on just one rink at Rogers Place, this year’s tournament includes an extra day of competition. The tournament will begin Christmas Day with a tripleheader.
The group stage, with two groups of five teams each, will span the first seven days of competition and end on New Year’s Eve. The eight surviving teams will have New Year’s Day off before returning to action for the quarterfinals on Jan. 2. The winners of those games will advance to the semifinals two days later. The bronze-medal and gold-medal games will take place Sunday, Jan. 5.
How has COVID-19 impacted the tournament?
From the jump, the tournament has felt the pandemic. The location was changed to a bubble in Edmonton. Then came the positive cases. Canada spent 14 days in quarantine during its selection camp before sending a handful of players home. Team USA lost two key players, John Beecher and Thomas Bordeleau. Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden were impacted as well.

Canada | Russia |
Finland | Sweden |
Switzerland | USA |
Slovakia | Czech Republic |

When is Canada vs. USA?
For now, this year’s tournament will not see a Battle of North America. With the two countries in different groups, fingers and toes will have to be crossed that they’ll square off in a do-or-die matchup.

World Juniors 2021: Team USA scores, schedule, how to watch
After skating away with medals in four straight tournaments for the first time in the program’s history, the United States left the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic empty-handed. Last year’s squad finished a disappointing sixth despite finishing in the top two in a tough Group B.
In 2021, the grouping doesn’t get any easier as Team USA will meet Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and upstart Austria. It’ll be a tough slog to rise to the top for the Americans, who will also be without the services of John Beecher and Thomas Bordeleau after they were released because of a positive test for COVID-19. (Beecher tested positive, although he’s tested negative since, and Bordeleau was his roommate.)
WORLD JUNIORS: How Covid-19 has impacted the tournament
No longer considered an afterthought, the U.S. is an established power on the world juniors circuit and is expected to be a medal contender. The Americans are owners of 12 medals (four gold, two silver and six bronze), and head coach Nate Leaman built a highly-skilled squad that should see another shiny medal come Jan. 5.
Here’s everything to know about the tournament, including how to watch live games in the United States, and a complete schedule with updated scores and standings.
Team USA’s schedule and results at World Juniors
The format for the 2021 World Junior Championship consists of two groups of five teams playing a preliminary round-robin to determine seeding followed by a single-elimination tournament. The United States drew Group B, which also includes Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Austria.

How to watch USA games live online
All the games will be played at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. World Junior Championship games are only available on NHL Network in the United States, which has plans to televise every game for the first time ever. Stephen Nelson will provide the play-by-play for each Team USA game and will be joined by analyst Dave Starman and reporter Jill Savage.
NHL Network is also streamed on fuboTV, which offers a 7-day free trial .
Team USA’s 2021 World Juniors roster
Eight players return from last year’s squad, including netminders Spencer Knight and Dustin Wolf, who provide one of the best 1-2 combos at the tournament. With a young defense in front of them — Cam York is the only returnee on the blue line — the two backstops will be heavily relied on.
Up front, USA Hockey’s forward group is deep. Trevor Zegras, who led the team in points last year with nine assists, returns, as does the team’s top goal scorer Arthur Kaliyev (aka #ArtyParty). Canadiens prospect Cole Caufield will look to avenge a poor 2020 tournament, where he only collected a goal and an assist.

How to live stream IIHF World Junior championship 2020 Online
The IIHF World Junior Championship is scheduled to take place from Friday, December 25, 2020 until Tuesday, January 5, 2021. This tournament will be held in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) with all games played behind closed doors due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to watch the IIHF World Junior Championship online. However, due to geographic restrictions, you may need a VPN to be able to live stream the tournament while traveling abroad.
Please keep in mind that we’re only recommending official sources for watching the IIHF World Junior Championship. Chances are that any unlicensed streams will be of inferior quality. Aside from low resolution and lag, unauthorized streams run the risk of being taken offline for violating copyright. Below, we’ll explore the multiple ways you can live stream the IIHF World Junior Championship with the help of a VPN.
The IIHF World Junior Championship will only be shown on region-locked platforms. If you’re traveling abroad, you’ll need to connect to a VPN to continue watching via your regular home streaming services.
How to watch IIHF World Junior Championship live online with a VPN
Using a VPN allows you to spoof your location and unblock region-locked websites and services. Once connected to a VPN server, you’re assigned a different IP address. For example, connecting to a server in the US means you receive a US IP address. You can then stream the IIHF World Junior Championships even if you’re located abroad.
Here’s how you can live stream IIHF World Junior Championship abroad using a VPN:
- First, you’ll need to sign up with a VPN provider. We recommend NordVPN although Surfshark and ExpressVPN are two solid alternatives for sports streaming.
- Next, download and install the app for the device on which you plan to watch the IIHF World Junior Championships online.
- Open the VPN app (or browser extension) and connect to a server in your preferred country of broadcast.
- Go to the website or service in question. Its content should now be unblocked in your location.
- Note that you may need to clear your browser’s cookies for changes to take effect. If you’re still having trouble, connecting to another server may do the trick.
The IIHF World Junior Championship will broadcast live. You can avoid missing out by testing your VPN with your chosen streaming platform ahead of time. If you have any issues, you can always contact your VPN’s customer support for further assistance.
How to watch IIHF World Junior Championship on US TV
You can watch the IIHF World Junior Championship in the United States on NHL Network. If you have a US cable TV subscription, you may already have access to NHL Network and be able to watch the tournament at no extra cost. However, it’s also possible to stream NHL Network cable-free via FuboTV ($59.99 USD/month plus $10.99/month for Sports Plus) and Sling TV ($30/month plus $10/month for Sports Extra).
Watching the NHL Network outside the US requires the use of a VPN. The reason for this is that all of its content is geo-blocked due to copyright and licensing. By connecting to a server in the US for a US IP address, you’ll be able to watch NHL Network online from anywhere. NordVPN comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee which means you can try it out with NHL Network risk-free. You then have a full 30 days to request a refund if unsatisfied.
Where else can I watch IIHF World Junior Championship online?
Canada
TSN is the IIHF’s main broadcast partner for the tournament as well as the main option for watching online in Canada. If you already have TSN as part of your existing TV package, you can simply sign in using your cable TV login details. Alternatively, TSN provides TSN Direct, a streaming service for those looking to watch online without cable. Daily ($7.99 CAD/month), monthly ($19.99) and six-monthly ($99.95) passes are available.
Note that TSN is only available in Canada. To watch TSN online from abroad, you’ll need to connect to a VPN server in Canada due to geo-blocking. Once you have a Canadian IP address, you’ll be able to live stream content as usual without restriction.
Germany
The official broadcaster of the IIHF World Junior Championship in Germany is Magenta Sport. If you already have an account, you’ll simply need to log in (while connected to a VPN server in Germany) to be able to live stream tournament matches. Otherwise, various subscription plans are available. The monthly cable-free subscription is priced at €16.53 per month. In comparison, the annual subscription works out at €9.70 monthly). Remember that for streaming Magenta Sport outside Germany, you’ll need a German IP address.
Russia
If you’re in Russia, you’ll be able to follow the IIHF World Junior Championship on Channel One as well as Match TV. Unfortunately, if you try to access these channels outside Russia, you’ll come across error messages. This is due to the geographic restrictions on the content. The good news is that this content is unblocked if you use a VPN to connect to a server in Russia to get a Russian IP address.
What should I know about IIHF World Junior Championship?
An annual event organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the World Junior Championship features national under-20 ice hockey teams from around the world. The main tournament consists of the top ten ranked nations. However, a further three divisions (Divisions I, II, and III) play in separate tournaments with the prospect of promotion to a higher pool.
The 2021 World Junior Championship will be the 45th edition of the tournament which will be held in Edmonton, Alberta in Canada. This makes it the 14th time that Canada will host this sporting event. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship games will be played behind closed doors without the presence of spectators.
Who is the favorite to win the IIHF World Junior Championship?
Canada is the defending champion and is favorite to retain its title in the 2021 tournament. Indeed, Canada has won some 32 medals over the years (18 gold, 9 silver, and 5 bronze) — far more than any other competing country. However, we can also expect the USA, Russia, and Sweden to all be involved in the latter stages of the tournament.

Disney will not be able to move its Marvel universe from Netflix
From September 2016 Netflix channel became the owner of the exclusive rights to broadcast Disney films in America. After the resounding success of the joint projects of Marvel and Netflix in the line of heroic series, there was a rumor in the media that Disney could buy this service, but later this information was not confirmed.
Last week, Disney said the studio intends to return all rights to its projects back. At the moment, we are talking about animated films of Disney and its Pixar division. It should be noted that Netflix shares fell more than one and a half percent after the news hit the tabloids.
The Disney company noted that the return of rights is associated with the implementation of its own project to provide streaming video, which is scheduled to start in 2019.
Disney plans to launch several services at once, which will be aimed at different age categories of viewers, which will provide access to full-length and animated films, including TV series from Disney Channel , Disney Junior and Disney XD .
Creating your own streaming video project could turn into a serious conflict for Disney and Netflix, after the launch of a number of TV series based on Marvel comics. In one of his interviews, the head of the Netflix channel – Ted Sarandos (Ted Sarandos) said that despite the fact that Disney wants to get back all the rights to the characters, do not forget that “Daredevil”, “Jessica Jones”, ” Defenders ”and other series are joint projects, which means that the projects will remain with the channel.
Moving TV shows such as “ Daredevil “, “ Jessica Jones “, “ Luke Cage “, “ Iron Fist “, “ Defenders ” and “ Punisher ” on the Disney platform may not fit the ratings of the company, which continues to work in the “films for the whole family” rules, but it is worth noting that until 2019 all the heroic Marvel series will definitely remain on Netflix.
It’s not clear how long Netflix can hold out against Disney, given that with all of its cash, Disney can afford to buy giants like Lucas Films, Marvel and an ongoing contract with FOX.
what will change for students in alma mater
Moscow lifts another restriction related to coronavirus. From Monday, February 8, students of the capital’s universities are leaving the distance learning system. Classes will resume in full-time format with mandatory compliance with sanitary requirements. Some changes will be made to the lecture schedule. What else will need to be adjusted?
Inspection of Rospotrebnadzor in GITIS – Rector Grigory Zaslavsky was a student and answered questions from inspectors.
– Your university is now ready for the start of the academic season. Now it is up to you to ensure that proper control is exercised on your part.
Grigory Zaslavsky and carries out: he personally stops violators.
– The meaning of this is so that, after leaving the 8th, you do not leave 9 and 10 online again.
The mask can only be removed on stage. And in quarantine, the student actors continued to rehearse in small groups, but the lectures were only online. Interruptions to the Internet have not been canceled. Sometimes, students admit, they had to skip lectures against their will. Now they are happy to be able to see their teachers outside of Zoom.
The alma mater is also preparing for a meeting with students: they disinfect, mark up, adjust the schedule. Here is what the rector of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov Victor Sadovnichy:
– Of course, we will observe all measures so that no more than a certain number of people are in this building. Each auditorium will be ventilated and there will be different streams. Some will finish classes, others will start.
The format of the classes will change slightly. For example, general streaming lectures will not be held in the same classroom as before. Students will be assigned to different rooms. The seating will now be like in the theater – through one.If at least one student falls ill, the entire group will be quarantined. But this is better, the teachers say.
The first retakes are already scheduled for Monday, because this year’s winter session was held on Zoom. So those who did not pass the exam online the first time will have to communicate with the teacher personally.
90,000 Patient participation in decision making – a win-win situation
This year’s program event, traditionally held by EURORDIS in Brussels as part of the Day of Patients with Rare Diseases, was a huge success, with over 150 participants. The event, which was held under the motto “Rare but real: let’s talk about rare diseases” , was attended by representatives of all stakeholders, including patients, EU Commissioner for Health Vytenis Andriukaitis and Member of the European Parliament from Belgium Philip De Baker (Philippe De Backer). Speakers noted the positive impact of patient participation in decision-making on rare disease policy.
As part of the Program event, which this year took place in a new discussion format, four discussions took place, each of which became an example of successful interaction of patients with other stakeholders. Another innovation was the possibility of online participation. Everyone could watch the discussion in real time via a live stream organized on the EURORDIS website, and even ask their question by sending it to the indicated address (a recording of the online broadcast is available on the EURORDIS TV website). This opportunity was used by Internet users from more than 30 countries.
European Commissioner Andriukaitis , who opened the event in his opening remarks, said in particular: “I am confident that joint European efforts will help improve the lives of patients who today have to overcome many difficulties associated with making an accurate diagnosis and receiving the necessary treatment caused by a lack of specialists on rare diseases at the country level.I promise to continue to work closely with EURORDIS and all other stakeholders to intensify efforts to find solutions to the problem of rare diseases at the pan-European level. ”
Event Moderator Kathy Redmond ( Kathy Redmond ), Editor Cancer World , all interested parties, creating a situation in which there are no losers.
Bojana Mirosavljevic ( Bojana Mirosavljevic ), mother of a patient with Batten’s disease, spoke about her long-term campaign to change Serbian prenatal screening legislation. She talked about the insurmountable problems the family had in the process of making a diagnosis and obtaining health insurance for her daughter Zoe, who died of Batten’s disease in 2006. Since the disease did not have a code in the classification of diseases adopted by the Serbian health care system, Zoya could not receive the necessary treatment in Serbia or compensation for paying for treatment abroad.Bojana and her husband did not want other Serbian families to suffer the same ordeal, and after years of hard struggle, they succeeded in changing what is now often referred to as “Zoya’s Law”. According to the amendments made to the law, if it is impossible to make a diagnosis in Serbia within 6 months after the patient (or his family) contacts, doctors are obliged to send biological materials for laboratory tests to a foreign clinic. Families with one child with a hereditary disorder are eligible for free prenatal screening, while other family members are also encouraged to undergo genetic testing. Hayriya Mujovich Zornic ( Hajrija Mujovic Zornic ), a legal consultant who took part in the preparation of Zoe’s Law , commented on this speech: “When Boyana approached me, I I immediately realized that the voice of patients when discussing the law will help solve not only her problem, but also the problems of many other families facing rare diseases. ”
Belgian MEP Philippe De Backer ( Philippe De Backer ) raised the need for health change. He stated: “The levels of accessibility of health care and treatment in the EU member states still differ significantly. Establishing a common European healthcare framework is the only way to ensure equal access to treatment for all European patients. This work should result in a more honest and more transparent system that will ultimately lead to increased access to treatment. ”
Philip Watt ( Philip Watt ), Chief Executive Officer, Irish Patient Group Cystic Fibrosis Ireland , advocating for patients with cystic fibrosis, spoke about the important role of his group to review the decision on the exemption status of a drug for the treatment of cystic fibrosis in Ireland. As a result of active actions of the organization, including an awareness-raising campaign, more than 100 patients gained access to a medicine that significantly improves the quality of life of patients and increases its duration. General Director RIZIV – INAMI (Belgian State Institute for Health and Disability Insurance) Ri De Ridder ( Ri De Ridder ) participation in the discussion, noted that when evaluating a drug for granting it a privileged status, it is necessary to take into account that for patients, ensuring a normal quality of life is often much more important than increasing its predicted duration. In Belgium, this problem was solved by developing a decision-making system based on a multi-criteria approach.
Carla Fladrowski ( Carla Fladrowski ), mother of a patient with tuberous sclerosis, shared her experience of cooperation with a pharmaceutical company on the development of a clinical trial protocol. She said that when her son was diagnosed with the disease, she had no idea what an important role the patients’ parents play in the process of developing new drugs. Here is how she commented on her involvement in the protocol: “Parents of patients with rare diseases are the liaison between the different healthcare providers involved in treating their child. I was able to participate on an equal footing in the work on the protocol, because in fact I am an expert on this disease. ”
Speaking with Karla Veronica Foote ( Veronica Foote ) representing the pharmaceutical company Novartis , said: knowledge – it is essential that drug developers and clinicians understand the importance of dialogue with patients. After all, in the end, for scientists working on new drugs, meeting patients with whom they are trying to help cope with the disease brings tremendous moral satisfaction. The adoption of the EURORDIS Code of Clinical Trials for Rare Diseases has played a decisive role in intensifying this process. ”
Helma Gusseck ( Helma Gusseck ) Patient with retinal pigmentary dystrophy and Nathalie Baer ( Nathalie Bere ) from the European Medicines Agency ( EMA ) talked about Helma’s participation in the EMA’s scientific advice procedure.Helma emphasized that the collaboration between patient experts, EMA and the pharmaceutical company provides patients with an excellent opportunity to contribute to the final decision on the launch of new drugs. Initiatives such as the EURORDIS Summer School provide them with the knowledge they need to protect the interests of the patient community. Here is what Helma said in this regard: “The EURORDIS Summer School allowed me to significantly expand my knowledge. Between my first and fourth visits to the EMA, their level has grown significantly, and I feel that my words now carry much more weight. “Natalie said that 50% of the comments made by patient representatives during the discussion of protocols form the basis for the recommendations made for companies.
Closing remarks were made by President EURORDIS Terkel Andersen ( Terkel Andersen ) only courageously overcome everyday problems, but also find the strength and time to participate in the formation of policy in the field of rare diseases. “
Here you can see photos from the Program event.

90,000 Streaming: how to turn life into a reportage or show with a smartphone
February 18, 2016,
15:00
8414
If a person has buried his nose in a smartphone, it means that he is impolite and he is not interested in the real life around. But who decided that you can’t watch real life from a smartphone screen? Maybe he’s watching in real time how a volcano erupts in Iceland or how astronauts dock with the ISS. Who could have thought of this 10 years ago?
Live streaming, or live streaming of custom video, was originally a niche entertainment, the lot of closed groups like gamers who followed professional fights with no less passion than football fans. But the situation was changing rapidly, streaming conquered the Internet: the service for streaming gamer video Twitch appeared in 2011, a couple of years later it was bought by Amazon for $ 970 million.
Ukrainians appreciated the live stream when the revolution happened. One could see what is actually happening on the Maidan, not in the interpretations of the media, but watching the events, as if being present on the spot. “Street journalism” was born: everyone could become a reporter, show the whole world what is happening right now. The time of information without borders has begun.
About who is now engaged in streaming in Ukraine, how stream services can affect the life of an entire country, and also about how video bloggers make money on streams, read below.
Streaming and street journalism
Social networks and online streaming can change the life of an entire country. Maidan began with a Facebook post. Already from November 22-23, activist streamers, to show what was really happening, began to do online broadcasts, which instantly became popular, attracting more and more people to protest. A KPI graduate, blogger Cruz Cruz (Alexander Baraboshko), became famous overnight thanks to the stream from the birth of Maidan.
Alexander didn’t like the way the journalists “slopochat”, who write news from the Maidan slowly, also replicating fakes. So he himself took an iPhone and a modem, borrowed a backlight and a modem charger from friends, walked around the Maidan, communicated with people. All this was broadcast on Ustream, and the broadcast was watched by thousands of users.
A team of volunteers from Spilno.TV also organized Euromaidan broadcasts. Streamers did not just distantly show the picture, but participated in what was happening. During the December events on Hrushevsky Street, 11 people from the team were wounded. According to the co-founder of the project, Bogdana Babich, at the very beginning, many media outlets in the hottest moments took streams from Spilno.TV.
Revolutionary streaming kit: either a camera or a smartphone was used as a transmission device
For filming, the activists used tape to twist streaming kits on their knees: a camera with a battery and a modem, or a smartphone with a charger. Now these ideas are being implemented professionally.
Max Prasolov is working on a startup that will produce such stream kits. The device so far has the working name StreamRun, it has a battery, an HDMI-h.264 encoder, a dual / trial 3G / 4G SIM slot, a Wi-Fi router, and mounts for a microphone, GoPro camera and smartphone. This is an evolution of the stream kit, which was collected on the Maidan, says Max. It will allow any streamer to stream HD video.
Spilno.TV quickly made it to the top 10 with millions of viewers, and Ustream even billed the team $ 205,000 for its services, although the channel’s ads were turned off. “They just didn’t have a clue about street streaming. Before us, the most popular videos were from the nest of eagles, for example. When we showed that we do not make money on this, they were just shocked. But they removed our debt, ”says Bogdana.
Online streams didn’t just show the truth, they mobilized users. After all, a stream, unlike a recorded video or reportage, is events without editing and censorship, it captures, you want to become a participant in the events. “When I was filming the events of December 11, 2500 viewers started watching me, and at the peak there were 90,000, first people fumbled links, then they came themselves,” says Bogdana.
Two years have passed since the revolution, but “street journalism” has not disappeared in Ukraine. Now live streams can be conducted from landmark meetings and meetings of government bodies, from protests, from festivals and even from searches. Sometimes streaming services affect people’s lives in very unpredictable ways. The recent history of KNU students is a good illustration of this.
In short, a couple of KNU students on Periscope (a live stream service recently launched by Twitter) talked about politics, about the Maidan, about corruption in their university. The stream caught the eye of the scandalous journalist Anatoly Shariy, who never misses an opportunity to criticize modern Ukrainian realities. He ridiculed the students, they say, from such bad Ukrainian journalists turn out.
The video got decent views, and after a couple of days the administration of the university removed all the students from the exams in order to arrange a “comradely trial” for the girls in the assembly hall for allegedly defaming the reputation of the university and their country. Tellingly, the “meeting” itself was filmed by the students from the phone, whispering against the background that “we must also have time to download the spurs.”
Streaming & Shows
We already wrote that streams were popular in the gaming environment. They remain among the main earning channels for professional gamers. Earlier, the players of the Ukrainian esports club Na’Vi said that if about 15,000 people watch a game on YouTube, you can earn about $ 100 per hour.
There are many of our compatriots among the famous world esportsmen. Not surprisingly, Lviv’s Danil ‘Dendi’ Ishutin, a professional Dota 2 player, ranks in the top 100 most popular channels on Twitch and tops the ratings of Russian-speaking streamers on this platform.
Now esports is one of the “hot” industries, it is developing very quickly and it is the live streaming platforms that need to be thanked for this. Global giants have already caught this trend: Google recently launched rival Twitch, a gaming platform for streaming YouTube Gaming.
“Live streams have brought esports to the mass market. After all, many do not play themselves, but love to watch others play. This is an audience of tens of millions of people. Streams were organized back in 2001, but you have no idea how difficult it was to do it, ”said the CEO of the club Alexander Kokhanovsky earlier. Now live streams of games, in terms of the intensity of passions and in terms of audience, are approaching the top football broadcasts, and soon, perhaps, they will overtake them.
Popular bloggers also use streams. 28-year-old Ukrainian Sasha Shapik is professionally engaged in video blogging. On YouTube, he has nearly 400,000 subscribers. “I’m just filming my life and showing it to you. A real reality show! ”He writes. His video is about everything from second-hand shopping to extreme jumps from the metro train to Dnipro.Sasha’s Periscope channel already has 62,000 subscribers and life is in full swing there:
Ordinary users are also increasingly paying attention to stream services. In the networks of Ukrainian operators – almost 40% of smartphones, 3G coverage in the country is gradually expanding, and streaming is becoming popular among ordinary users. “In Ukraine, even schoolchildren are actively using Periscope: you turn on the stream and you see a ninth-grader complaining about her teacher to the whole world right in the classroom. It is clearly seen that there is a technological gap between generations, ”says Ukrainian programmer Arsen Kostenko, who works on Twitter with video platforms.
Several popular streaming services
Now the beginner streamer has a lot to choose from. There are many services, including free ones. “Perisope is not yet monetized, but it is well suited for converting audiences. It takes on its simplicity and possibilities for interacting with the audience. Ustream is good because there is integration for sites and it is normally adapted for viewing from a PC. On YouTube, the broadcast is more difficult to set up, plus, the channel needs to be verified. But as a result, it is the most convenient channel for users.Twitch is better suited for screen shots and online interviews, ”says Alexander Baraboshko.
- YouTube Live Events is a video streaming service from YouTube. The peculiarity is that for use it is necessary that the account is verified and has a good reputation (the author does not violate the rules of the platform, copyright, etc.).
- Ustream – one of the most popular free video streaming services, there is a web version, mobile applications.
