Welcome to Montgomery Bell Academy! We are the only boys’ school in Middle Tennessee, founded in 1867, and proud of our roots and foundations dating back to the 1780’s. MBA’s long history is intricately woven into a vision and mission of developing “Gentlemen, Scholars, Athletes,” and keeping current in our world. MBA’s main campus is on Harding Road, where one will see beautiful buildings and green spaces in the center of Nashville. We are also fortunate to have playing fields in the Sylvan Park area, located approximately two miles from our main campus, as well as 200 acres of pristine mountaintop property that includes an observatory, playing fields, a lake, hiking trails, and high and low ropes courses. Our mountaintop retreat at Long Mountain is approximately a 90-minute drive from our main campus. Both the property on Harding Road and at Long Mountain will see significant expansion in the next two years.

Montgomery Bell Academy intentionally provides a breadth of experiences to spark intellectual curiosity and develop the innate abilities of each student. Our small class sizes and daily advisory sessions allow our students to be truly known by the faculty of the school. The underpinning of an MBA education is a classical curriculum focused on the liberal arts. Some elements of our approach are thus quite traditional in nature. In addition to at least two years of studying Latin, students focus heavily on English grammar and core writing skills throughout six years. They do this, however, not because such instruction is traditional, but rather because such an approach builds a foundation for developing skills highly relevant to the modern world.
Learning Latin improves a boy’s understanding of the mechanisms of language and helps him learn modern languages, including English. Emphasizing grammar and writing in English allows boys to express themselves effectively in higher-level classes and to develop lifelong skills that set our students apart.
While our curriculum may be classical, it is not old-fashioned. We are proud of how many of our academic departments are at the cutting edge of modern instructional techniques. From the range of science labs our students take part in to the use of technology in history and math classes, from digital resources in art rooms to immersion teaching in our high-school language programs, we constantly seek out best-practices and innovative approaches that prove effective in developing our boys’ intellectual curiosities and abilities.
The academic experience of MBA students reflects our philosophy. After a focus on developing foundational skills in 7th and 8th grade, the high school delves deeper into the thorough understanding of a subject, the logical connections between various concepts, and the eloquent presentation of ideas and arguments. It is during these high school years that our students build upon a strong foundation and gain flexibility to pursue subjects that ignite their individual passions. We offer 27 AP courses across 20 subjects, a vast array that satisfies our students’ myriad interests.
Our teachers, over two-thirds of whom have earned an advanced degree in their area of study, have abundant access to professional development opportunities that further expand their understanding and knowledge of specific subject matter as well as classical and single-sex education. We are gratified that many of our faculty choose MBA to accomplish their life’s work teaching our students. This cohesive and long-standing group provides continuity and consistency in the high quality education a young man receives at MBA. Montgomery Bell Academy Partnership | Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy
How donors at one school in Tennessee are supporting students on their path to language fluency through a partnership with the language Academy.
Montgomery Bell Academy (MBA), a college preparatory school for 720 young men in grades 7-12 in Nashville, Tennessee, is dedicated to providing its students with the opportunity to gain fluency in a foreign language. MBA’s Wilson Language Grants award students with full scholarships to participate in a summer of immersive language study through the language Academy.
The Academy provides passionate middle and high school students with four-week summer language experiences in Spanish, French, Chinese, German and Arabic in the U. S. and abroad. The Academy is based on Middlebury College’s renowned summer Language Schools, which for 100 years have immersed educators, diplomats and interpreters in world language study.
The goal of this unique partnership between MBA and the Academy is to equip students with the language skills and cultural understanding to compete in our 21st Century global marketplace.
Wilson Language Grants: Immersion & Travel
MBA’s Wilson Language Grants encourage high school students with a keen interest in languages and culture to gain further experience and fluency in modern world languages. Awards are given to students who show exceptional potential and maintain superior performance in the language of study. MBA requires that students first participate in a summer of domestic language immersion before applying for a grant for a second summer of language study abroad.
MBA’s partnership with MMLA started in 2012, when two MBA students attended the language program at Pomona College. Upon their return to MBA the next school year, the students demonstrated tremendous language growth, setting the foundation for a larger group of 15 students to attend MMLA in 2013.
According to Connor Kamm, a Spanish teacher at MBA, “Students had a phenomenal experience their first summer and came back leagues above other students in their level.”
The MBA-Academy partnership continues to grow with 25-30 students attending MMLA’s domestic immersion programs each year.
The Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy Difference
Students at the Academy sign a Language Pledge®, a formal commitment to communicate fully in the target language at all times—in class, at the dinner table and during activities—which contributes to the tremendous language growth students achieve in just four weeks.
“The Academy really seems to be better than a lot of other programs with a true focus on language learning and student performance,” Kamm stated. “This program is an incredible stepping stone that allows students to immerse themselves in language and learn a lot about the culture in a more structured environment that’s also preparing them for college.”
A Summer of Immersive Language Accelerates Language Growth
The Academy uses the nationally recognized American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) proficiency scale to measure student growth. Students take an adaptive assessment to measure their starting and ending proficiency levels. In four weeks living immersed in language and culture, the majority of students will gain at least one full year of language learning as measured on ACTFL’s language proficiency scale.
At MBA, language teachers have seen the vast majority of students return with “impressive growth” with many students jumping from a Level 2 Honors class to Advanced Placement® without having to take the Level 3 course.
“Students return more engaged and invested in the language and culture,” said Kamm. “We are really happy with the Middlebury program and love what the Academy does for our students and their language and personal growth.”

Montgomery Bell Academy 9, Father Ryan High 1: Big Red Victory
Wednesday Night, the Ford Ice Center in Bellevue and the Nashville Predators organization played host to a showdown between two local high school hockey teams. The Montgomery Bell Academy Big Red, 11-0 on the season and coached by former Predator J-P Dumont, took on the Father Ryan High School Irish. The Irish, coached by Steven Henry, son of Predators President Sean Henry, and assisted by former Predator Cody Hodgson, claimed a record of 4-4 coming into the matchup. The Nashville Predators organization put on a Bridgestone-quality presentation with Pete Weber and Hal Gill calling the game on the radio; Chris Mason, Lyndsay Rowley, and Willy Daunic livestreaming coverage; and Predators PA Announcer Paul McCann announcing the game. The entire set up was the professional experience that every student-athlete dreams about.
Both teams entered the ice, introduced by “Thanks” Paul McCann to the cheers and jeers of the COVID-limited crowd, evident of the rivalry between these two teams.
Once the starting lineups were announced, Keesha Rainey sang an incredible rendition of the National Anthem to the cheers of the crowd.
The opening faceoff got the action started and Father Ryan took control of the puck. After a brief challenge in the front of the MBA net, the Big Red took over, spending some time in the offensive zone. Although they created several chances, nothing got past Father Ryan’s goalie, Nicky Bojczuk. However, it wasn’t long before MBA’s Ty Harden found the back of the net, putting MBA up 1-0. The goal was assisted by Lee Guy III.
Soon after, Luke Haley, assisted by Tyler Laub and Will Morrison, put MBA up 2-0 with a top-shelf snipe from below the left circle.
With around 5 minutes remaining in the first, Luke Haley scored an unassisted goal, increasing MBA’s lead to 3-0.
In the waning seconds of the first, Otis Ditenhafer, assisted by Cameron Kinser, popped the puck past Bojczuk once more to put MBA up 4-0 before both teams headed to the locker room.
The second period started with some fireworks as MBA was called for high-sticking, giving Father Ryan a chance on the power play. Unfortunately, Father Ryan was unable to take advantage of the opportunity and ultimately allowed MBA’s Ty Harden to collect his second goal of the night while his team was on short-handed. This put MBA up 5-0 and eventually, the penalty expired.
After this, things went back and forth for quite awhile and Father Ryan saw some good chances in front of MBA goalie Matthew Thayer. Despite the chances, the next goal was scored by MBA’s Sebastian Cigarran, unassisted.
With a score of 6-0, things got a bit dicey as MBA was called for slashing and sent to the penalty box. Soon after this, Father Ryan made a change in goal by pulling Bojczuk, who had seen a full game’s work in 21 minutes, and sending Luke Anderson into the fray.
Emboldened by the change in goal, Father Ryan’s Matt Chandler found twine for the first time and put his team on the board. Now facing only a five-goal deficit, Father Ryan would attempt to mount a comeback. However, with around 30 seconds remaining, Otis Ditenhafer, assisted by Cigarran, fired another blast past Luke Anderson to put MBA up 7-1 and the teams headed to the locker room for the final intermission soon after.
The third period started with a solid save by Father Ryan’s Luke Anderson. Soon after, Father Ryan’s Daniel Albanese was called for slashing, sending MBA to the power play. Father Ryan’s penalty kill proved effective as the penalty expired without incident.
As the time dwindled away, MBA’s Edward Herlitzka, assisted by Ty Harden and Cooper Greene, found the back of the net, extending MBA’s lead to 8-1.
Soon after, Tyler Laub, assisted by Cooper Greene, scored his first of the night and added another goal to the lead, making it 9-1 for MBA.
Time expired on the game with a final score of 9-1 as Montgomery Bell Academy extended its win streak to 12 and remains undefeated in league play this season. Father Ryan falls to 4-5 on the season.
Three Stars of the Game
3rd Star – Father Ryan’s Nicky Bojczuk. This kid played the first half of the game and did the best he could to stand on his head. The majority of the action he saw was from the top lines. Lots of heart and solid performance on the ice, even if the scoreboard didn’t match.
2nd Star – MBA’s Ty Harden. withtwo goals and one assist, his three points on the night shone as he was involved in producing offense almost every time he was on the ice. Quite an impressive showing from a guy who was 8th in points coming into tonight’s game.
1st Star – MBA’s Matthew Thayer. I know this is almost the first time this name has been mentioned, but MBA’s goaltender stopped nearly EVERYTHING that came his way. No, a lot of the shots he faced weren’t high-danger shots, but he was an incredible netminder and was carrying a .71 GAA and a save percentage of .940 coming into the game. Absolute lights-out performance from this young man.

Montgomery Bell Main GateMontgomery Bell Academy is a preparatory school in Nashville, Tennessee. It is a day school for boys in grades 7-12. The present (as of 2005) U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, is an alumnus. Other alumni include Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Frank F. Drowota III, Grove/Atlantic Inc. president Morgan Entrekin, noted novelists Madison Jones and Madison Smartt Bell, Band of Brothers actor Richard Speight, Jr., and Admiral Joseph W. Prueher, a former Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Command and Ambassador to China. Earlier in the school’s history, its graduates included journalist J. Frederick Essary (1881-1942), diplomat Ralph James Totten (1877-1949), and U.S. Secretary of War Jacob McGavock Dickinson (1851-1928). Lt. Gen. Frank Maxwell Andrews, the aviation pioneer and World War II European commander for whom Andrews Air Force Base is named, graduated from the school in 1901. “MBA”, as it is often called, was established in the 1860s in the aftermath of the American Civil War. It is the successor to at least two well-known predecessors, the Western Military Institute, which was attended by Sam Davis, the “Boy Hero of the Confederacy”, and the preparatory school for the former University of Nashville. (Indeed, the school’s board still operates under the corporate title, “Board of Trustees of the University of Nashville”, although that institution was otherwise disbanded in the early 20th century.) It was later moved to an estate which was at the time well west of downtown Nashville which was previously known as “Totomoi”. The military nature of one of the predecessors notwithstanding, under its current name it has always operated as a civilian institution, and as a day, rather than a boarding, school. The school is named in honor of Montgomery Bell, a Pennsylvania native who made his fortune as the early 19th century “ironmaster” of Middle Tennessee and whose will endowed it, with the stipulation that it forever be an all-male institution. That this practice has survived into the 21st century has proved to be quite startling to some, but in recent decades there has been little local sentiment in favor of a change since a number of excellent girls-only and coeducational academic options have developed in Nashville. Probably more of its graduates go on to attend Vanderbilt (down to 7% in recent years) than any other university, but no single institution of higher learning attracts a very large proportion of the graduates.
The 1989 motion picture Dead Poets Society starring Robin Williams, depicts a school patterned on Montgomery Bell Academy. The Alumni Department of Montgomery Bell Academy, according to a website  (http://www.deliriumsrealm.com/delirium/movies/dps.asp) about the film, has stated:
- The movie Dead Poets Society was written by Thomas Schulman, a 1968 graduate of Montgomery Bell Academy. The teacher portrayed by Robin Williams in the movie was based on one of Mr. Schulman’s teachers while he was at MBA, Mr. Sam Pickering. The events in the movie, however, are purely fictional.
MBA also has extensive exchange links with boys’ schools throughout the English-speaking world; arrangements are in place with Eton College and Winchester College in England, Michaelhouse and Kearsney Colleges in South Africa, and The Southport School and The King’s School in Australia.
Racial desegregation was very late in coming to MBA, as it was to many simliar Southern prep schools; the school was all white as late as the 1970s.
The school is noted for a large number of National Merit and other scholarship winners; whether this is a product of the quality of the school or the relative privilege into which most of its students are born and raised is debated. Like many old-line prep schools, MBA is still governed by a traditional honor code in which students vow not to lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do so.

Montgomery Bell Academy ( MBA ) is a preparatory day school for boys in grades 7-12 in Nashville, Tennessee.
MBA was founded in 1867 after the American Civil War. It is the successor to two prominent schools: the Western Military Institute, which was attended by Confederate Boy Hero Sam Davis, and the former University of Nashville.The school’s board of directors operates under the corporate name “The University of Nashville Board of Trustees,” although the university was disbanded in 1909.
From 1870 to 1875, former Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith was rector of the University of Nashville, which ran both a two-year college, operating both the University of Nashville and an MBA, preparatory high school, and grammar school. In 1875, a financial crisis and a donation from the Peabody Foundation led to the organizational separation of the university and preparatory school.The university was run by a new board of trustees and used the proceeds of the Peabody Foundation to run a university called Peabody Normal College, later called George Peabody’s College for Teachers. The University of Nashville Board of Trustees continued to use the MBA program as a prep school.

Dead Poets Society , a 1989 film starring Robin Williams, depicts a school modeled on the Montgomery Bell Academy, although the events in the film were fictional. The script for the film was written by Thomas Schulman, who graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy in 1968. Robin Williams portrayed a character based on Sam Pickering, one of Schulman’s teachers during his MBA.

The Montgomery Bell Academy campus consists of eight academic and administrative buildings, a gymnasium and numerous sports facilities on campus.
Montgomery Bell Academy also owns and operates a 24-inch telescope at McMinnville, Tennessee, Long Mountain. The area is known for having the least natural light in the southeastern United States, which creates favorable conditions for astrophotography.Every year, Montgomery Bell Academy faculty and students visit the site to host the annual executive seminar. The complex has two football fields, a lake, a rope course and a low rope course. The main feature of the campus (besides the observatory) is the large rock to the west of the building. Students are challenged every year to climb down the cliff and climb the cliff as well. Sometimes the school climbing club comes here to do natural rock climbing.Rear view of the Carter Building.
In 2011, Montgomery Bell Academy added a new Lowry building at the end of December. In 2012, the construction of the new school building, the Wallace Building, was completed. In addition to these new structures, a geothermal heating and cooling system has been added. The school also built new porous car parks to facilitate the operation of the new irrigation system.
Montgomery Bell Academy also has exchange links with other boys’ schools throughout the English-speaking world; these include Eton College and Winchester College in England, Kearsney College and Michaelhouse in South Africa, as well as The Southport School, The King’s School, Parramatta and, more recently, Melbourne Grammar School in Australia, Christ’s College, Christchurch in New Zealand and The Raffles Institution.in Singapore. Winchester College and Eton College are similar to MBAs in discipline, dress code, and all-male students.
Notable people who spoke to the students included Michael Crichton, Ted Turner, Charles Townes, and Robert Orr Jr.
A statue of Sam Davis was installed on the school grounds until 2020.
In 2019, the MBA began construction on a new 200,000 square foot health and fitness center.It is scheduled to open in early 2021.
In addition to the academic program, Montgomery Bell Academy offers students a variety of sports to choose from, most notably football, basketball, baseball, soccer and lacrosse.
The school won the Tennessee High School Athletic Association championship fourteen times from 1915 to 2014.
The school is also recognized for its cross-country team.Since its inception in 1995, the team has won a total of thirteen state championships. In particular, the team showed perfect results at the 2010 state championship, in which all five of the best places were taken by the school’s runners.
The high school tennis team was able to claim the 2013 state title over Gulliver’s prep school by a 5-4 margin. The team also hosts its own tennis tournament each spring called the Francis Carter Invitational.
The football MBA program is led by former Waterford United (Irish Premier League) coach Giles Chivers. MBA Soccer won the 2015 Tennessee Football Championship (DII-AA), beating Christian Brothers High School (CBHS) 3-0.
Debate and Forensics
In addition to academic programs, Montgomery Bell Academy has a separate discussion and forensics program. The school offers political debate to its students.
Annually, the Montgomery Bell Academy hosts the South Bell Forum Performing and Debating Tournament. Recognized as one of the most prestigious tournaments in the National Forensic League, the tournament is distinguished from others by its unique ranking system, in which the speaker points are taken into account in the final ranking system. This system encourages teams to compete without losing a single round. The Billy Tate Forum is also a famous impromptu speech tournament.
Visual and performing arts
The Montgomery Bell Academy Theater Program won awards from the Tennessee Theater Association.In April and May, the school also performs its annual student-directed one-act productions, in which students are encouraged to write and submit their original scripts. The MBA also presents its annual musical with students at Harpeth Hall School. The high school orchestra is known as the Sinfonia MBA.

American Football Defender
Harry Ingle Martin IV (born August 15, 1982) is a former American college and professional football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) for three seasons in late 2000 -x. Martin played college football for the University of Florida and Furman University, and after that he played professionally for the Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos NFL and New York Guard of the United Football League (UFL). Martin is currently the head football coach at Christ Presbyterian Academy, a private preparatory school in Nashville, Tennessee.
Martin was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1982.  He attended Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, and was a Letterman in football, basketball, soccer, and baseball.  Martin led Montgomery Bell to three Tennessee State Championships in a row with 32 straight wins and a final. USA Today national top 25 rankings in both 1999 and 2000. 
While at Montgomery Bell, Martin was named in the Parade High School Magazine All-American Team, and added national awards from Prep Star, Super Preparation and National Blue Chips.  He was named one of the top 20 defenders in the country by the Football Preparatory Report and was rated as the best player in Tennessee by Super Prep.  Martin was also a two-time Division II Player of the Year in Tennessee. 
As a junior, he completed 97 of 140 assists for 1450 yards and 14 touchdowns. As a senior in 2000, he completed 62 of 137 assists on 964 yards with seven touchdowns and also ran 935 yards. In 2000, he made six field goals in nine attempts in 2000, with three field goals being thrown over fifty yards, including a school record of fifty-six yards. 
Martin was heavily recruited by Tennessee Volunteers, LSU Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide and Virginia Cavaliers programs before accepting an athletic scholarship offer to attend the University of Florida at Gainesville, Florida.  Martin played for Coach Steve Spurrier and Coach Ron Zux Florida Football Gators team from 2001 to 2003. 
In their freshman year, the Gators coaching staff decided: Red shirt Martin and he worked for the Florida scout team by winning the John Eibner Gators Award, which is presented annually to the “unsung hero” of the Gators scouting team.  In his sophomore year in 2002, he played twelve out of thirteen games, mostly as a stunt double for starting quarterback, Rex Grossman, but he also played as a starting player in seven games and played wide receiver in eight games.  As a passer, he made seven out of ten passes at ninety-six yards, and also caught two passes at fourteen yards and dashed for fifty-one yards eleven times; as a player, he averaged 35.2 yards on 46 antlers. 
During his junior season in 2003, Martin started the first four games of the season before the arrival of a new head coach. Ron Zook replaced him in the starting lineup with Chris Leak, one of the nation’s top rookies, who has recruited defenders after Martin suffered a concussion against the Miami hurricanes.After replacing Ingle in the fourth game of the season, Leek remained the starter for the rest of the year, putting Martin’s career as an alligator in limbo. In Martin’s four starts against the San Jose State Spartans, Miami Hurricanes, Florida A&M Rattlers and Tennessee Volunteers, he completed forty-seven of seventy-seven assists (61.0% average) at 654 yards and three touchdowns, and a quarterback efficiency rating of 140 ,five.
After finishing his junior season in Florida, Martin transferred to Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he spent two successful years and set a number of passing records for the Furman Paladins Football team.
In 2004, in his first season at Furman, Martin led the most balanced offensive in high school history (averaging 226.2 yards and 228.8 yards per game). He started all 13 games, completing 198 of 320 assists (61.9%) for 2,792 yards, 22 touchdowns and 9 steals. Martin also made 62 hits for 292 yards (averaging 4.7 yards per try) and three touchdowns. He has averaged 3,084 yards in 382 games, averaging 237.2 yards per game on offense. Martin also shot 10 punches at 308 yards (an average of 30.8 yards per punt, with six of his kicks hitting within the 20-yard line.
In 2005, Martin served as quarterback in the All-American Squad of the first FCS team. Sports Network , and has earned All-American First Team awards as a player from 1-AA.org. He also won the All-South Conference first-team awards from both quarterback and player. South Carolina state sports writers have named Martin the South Carolina-wide quarterback. He also won the Furman Vince Perone (Team’s Most Valuable Player) Award after his senior season.
Martin was the team captain, starting 14 games. In the season, he completed 212 of 349 assists (60.7%) for 2,959 yards, a new team record in one season, 20 touchdowns (second after his 2004 total) and 13 interceptions. He also threw 77 times for 232 yards (averaging 3.0 yards per try) and five touchdowns. Martin had a total of 3,193 yards, also a high school record, in 426 games, averaging 227.9 yards per game. He landed 34 kicks at 1,446 yards (averaging 43.2 yards per punt – the third-best season record in team history), the longest of which was 70 yards when 11 shots were fired inside the 20-yard line and eight others led to a good catch…. Only 13 of Martin’s antlers were returned, with an average of 38.79 yards.
