Will Pettit-The “Underground Railroad” – ENGL 105.047 Public History Blogs
Former Slaves escaping and taking refuge in Wilmington, North Carolina during the Civil War
The search for freedom is something everyone deserves, but others had to earn theirs. In this picture, we see multiple African-American’s, who are escaped slaves, trudging along on their path to freedom. The southern states have always been big slave enthusiasts, and in Wilmington North Carolina these slaves are on their way to freedom. This image is depicting escaped slaves finding refuge in Wilmington, North Carolina along the Underground Railroad. The image appears to be in a heavily wooded area, which allows it to be hard to see as well as showing another African-American woman standing at the house with her child taking in the other escaped slaves.
Most slaves in the south escaped by going along the Underground Railroad, which was a trail of houses and paths that lead from the south all the way to the north and Canada. The first group of slave abolitionists was the Quakers. They set up routes and places of shelter in North Carolina, which explains how these people are hiding in a house that was in the south. When slaves escaped, they were guided along the path by “conductors” who were either former slaves and whites. They slept in private houses, churches, and schoolhouses. These places were called “stations”, “safe houses” or “depots” and the person who ran the places were called “Sationmasters”. The Underground Railroad was first mentioned in 1831 after a former slave had used it to escape from Kentucky to Ohio. The Underground Railroad had made escaping to the north much easier for the slaves.
Before they had escaped, their lives were miserable. They were forced to work on plantations to do labor all day in the hot sun and were paid nothing. The living conditions they had were horrible, and they were whipped if they did anything deemed wrong. The life of a slave was inhumane, but there were groups of people who wanted slavery to be abolished. However, when slaves became free, life for them was not so much better. African-Americans who were former slaves were still persecuted for their skin color and still were not treated as human beings by white people in the north. They still did not have great living conditions because they were unable to get jobs since they had no skills as they were not taught how to read or write. Upon all of that, they’re new found freedom wasn’t always guaranteed to be permanent. The Fugitive Slave Act made it illegal to tamper with or free slaves as well as encouraged officers to recapture slaves. This act made the recapturing of slaves a very lucrative business which made it even harder for them to hide, which caused a lot of slaves to go up all the way to Canada.
Although these slaves were looking for a better life in the north, not a lot changed when they got there. They were still treated just as poorly and had terrible living conditions, the only difference was they weren’t locked up in chains. Whites in the north wanted to free the slaves but never wanted to treat them differently. Race relations during this time were horrendous, as depicted in the image. These people were forced to fear for their lives for just wanting to be free. The image also shows how terrible their living conditions, once they were free, were as the house appears to be very old and beaten up. Slaves in the 1800s were just looking for their own freedom, but never truly got it even if they escaped and were no longer locked in chains. This image shows how poorly African American’s were treated at this time. They were forced to be to on the run and fear for their lives just to get to a place where they were free but still treated horribly.
The slaves in this picture were carrying everything they own on their backs and forced to walk by foot just to get a chance at being free. The effects and aftermath of slavery had been felt for decades from the African American community. Although slavery had been abolished in the United States, African Americans were still treated poorly. Slavery and the mistreatment of African Americans during this time carried on farther out than just the 1860s. African Americans did not have any rights and were forced to use different restrooms and restaurants, and forced to sit in the back of busses all the way until the 1960s. African Americans had to fight for every freedom they have and deserve, and even after we’re treated horribly. It took around a hundred years after slavery to be abolished for them just to have basic human rights. This image is a depiction of people who are fighting with their entire lives just to be free, and still, even hundreds of years after still African Americans still suffer from slavery. Today, African Americans still face injustices all of which stemmed from slavery. Even though slavery was abolished the effects of it are still felt by the African-American community today.

Meet Steve Pettit, BJU’s 5th President
On May 8, 2014, Bob Jones University’s Board of Trustees elected Stephen D. Pettit Sr.—a man who has faithfully served the Lord for nearly 35 years in evangelism and college ministry—as BJU’s fifth president.
Pettit replaces Dr. Stephen Jones who, for health reasons, announced in December he would end his nine-year tenure as BJU’s president at the end of Commencement May 9.
Searching for BJU’s fifth president
Over the past several months, BJU’s seven-person Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees conducted a presidential search in which they interviewed a number of candidates before unanimously recommending Pettit to the Board.
“With his emphasis on discipleship and his extensive experience in working with college students, Steve is a natural choice for BJU president,” says Larry Jackson, chairman of the Executive Committee. “He is committed to BJU’s biblical positions and academic objectives, and we look forward to the leadership he will bring to the University.”
Pettit will assume the presidency May 10. A formal installation ceremony will be held in the fall.
“I’m overwhelmed by the opportunity to serve as BJU’s president,” says Pettit.
“For decades, I’ve appreciated the ministry of BJU and the Jones family to me and my family. I truly desire to honor BJU’s heritage and continue—by God’s grace—to fulfill its mission. I particularly want to emphasize the primacy of the local church, encourage relational discipleship among our students, faculty and staff and continue the emphasis on academic excellence and living a godly life.”

Ministering the Gospel
Pettit never imagined that he would one day return to BJU to become president. “This certainly was not on my bucket list,” he says. “But the Lord opened the door. My wife and I believe that God has called us to BJU, and we will be obedient to His call.”
Following his BJU graduation, both he and Terry saw their calling in pastoral ministry and evangelism. For five years, Pettit served as youth pastor for First Baptist Church in Bridgeport, Michigan, before entering full-time evangelism. For the last 29 years, the Pettits have traveled year-round in evangelism, conducting more than 800 campaigns, crusades and camps throughout the United States and preaching in 21 countries.
Pettit formerly served as camp director and staff evangelist for Northland Camp and Conference Center in Dunbar, Wisconsin. Additionally, Pettit has also served for the last three years as the national director for Cross Impact Ministries, a ministry which partners with local churches to minister on college campuses across the nation.
Pettit is also currently a member of the boards of both the Central Africa Baptist College in Kitwe, Zambia, and Bob Jones University.
2014 Steve Pettit Evangelistic Team
Inspiring Christian young people
With a deep burden for this generation of young people, Pettit has devoted a large portion of his ministry to inspiring young people to pursue relational discipleship while reflecting a commitment to godly living. “I have spent nearly every day of my life for the past 20 years working together with young adults and college students,” he says. “I know the culture that most BJU students come from, and I want them to come away from college not just with an education but with a changed life.”
According to Mark Egerdahl—who graduated from BJU in 2009 and has been traveling with the Steve Pettit Evangelistic Team for the last five years—Pettit is the perfect fit for BJU students. “He knows this generation because he has been working with 20-somethings for the past 25 years,” Mark says. “He is very relational. I’ve been confronted by him, challenged by him, and without his loving discipleship, I know that I would not be who I am today by God’s grace.”
Mark also points out that Pettit is a faithful expositor of the Word and will greatly benefit students in chapel. “He’s not a man who preaches the same sermon year in and year out,” Mark says. “He’s a student of the Word, who loves the Word of God. And he explains it in such a clear way. He’s intellectual, yet he’s very practical. You are going to see an outflowing of discipleship in the student body. I think he is going to be a huge blessing for students.”
In addition to life-on-life discipleship, Pettit also has a burden to revitalize BJU’s ministerial program. “I’m a preacher, so I want to see another generation of preachers and ministers of the Gospel,” he says. “Bob Jones University is a liberal arts school, so I also want to educate people to be leaders and disciple-makers.”
Coming to serve at BJU
If Pettit were to summarize his role as president of Bob Jones University in a word, that word would be service. But it’s not a type of service that has its ultimate end in BJU. Rather, he sees BJU as educating people who are Gospel-oriented. “They are God’s people walking around in this world as pilgrims on their way towards Heaven,” he says, “spreading the light of the Gospel wherever they go.”
His desire is to see the entire university community embody this vision. “It’s about developing people with a kind of character that serves and loves people. So love has to be modeled by everybody that works and teaches here. A disciple-maker and a leader are not two different things. They are the same thing.”
“I do believe there ought to be a place where people take seriously biblical obedience, holiness and the commands of Scripture,” he continues. “And I believe that Bob Jones University is a place where we take these things seriously. Character has to have an end, and that end has to be love.”

Cherished Classics from The Pettit Collection Will Be Offered Without Reserve
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (June 25, 2012) – Gooding & Company, the acclaimed auction house celebrated for selling the world’s most significant and valuable collector cars, is honored to present the finest automobiles of the William A.C. Pettit, III Collection at its Pebble Beach Auctions on August 18 & 19. Consummate enthusiasts and collectors, Bill Pettit and his father W.A. Claude Pettit owned the Pettit Brothers Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge-Jeep dealership and Museum of Motoring Memories in Natural Bridge, Virginia, for many years. The centerpiece of the Pebble Beach Auctions’ Pettit Collection is the “Blue J,” a renowned 1929 Duesenberg Model J Dual-Cowl Phaeton widely recognized for its incomparable styling, wonderful originality and signature blue livery. Presented without reserve, all 12 motor cars epitomize the quality and preserved state of Bill Pettit’s museum-quality collection and the lifelong passion of the genuine enthusiast who passed away earlier this year.
“Bill Pettit built one of the finest and most extensive automotive collections of his era and was generous enough to share it with enthusiasts around the world for decades,” says David Gooding, President and founder of Gooding & Company. “Our Pebble Beach Auction will be an important opportunity for collectors to take home one of the great classics in Bill’s extraordinary estate, many of which have been in the family since the 1940s. We sincerely hope that the next generation of collectors appreciate how special these cars are and continue Bill’s legacy of quality stewardship.”
Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach Auctions presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for car enthusiasts to own one of finest cars in the Pettit estate, which have benefitted from decades of pampering and preservation under Bill Pettit’s direction. As requested by the former owner, who was dedicated to supporting developments in children’s healthcare, estate proceeds will be donated to the Shriners Hospital for Children®, which Bill Pettit believed offered the best care.
Bill Pettit’s Museum of Motoring Memories
Opened in 1958 by Bill Pettit and his father, the Museum of Motoring Memories in Natural Bridge, Virginia, operated for nine years as one of the country’s leading family travel destinations with more than 150 collector cars, endless memorabilia and over 4,000 license plates on display.
“Blue J,” a 1929 Duesenberg Model J Dual-Cowl Phaeton
Chassis No. 2292; Engine No. J-270
This well-known Model J still carries its original engine, chassis and LeBaron Dual-Cowl Phaeton coachwork. In 1937, while owned by Franklin d’Olier, Jr., J-270 was restyled by the Derham Custom Body Company by adding fashionable skirted fenders, a dramatic V’d windscreen with winged side windows, bullet-type headlamps and external exhaust pipes. The car was sold in 1940 to avant-garde German artist and Duesenberg collector Rudolph Bauer, who sold it to Bill Pettit in the 1950s. Today the car has a unique and wonderful patina and its original interior is still present underneath canvas covers. Other than an engine rebuild in the 1970s, “Blue J” has been preserved untouched by the Pettit family for over 60 years. Its estimate is $2–$2.75 million and will be offered without reserve.
“When I first met Bill, I was immediately impressed by his genuine character, passion and dedication to preserving the automobiles in his collection,” says Jakob Greisen, Specialist for Gooding & Company. “A collection of this quality and originality is very rare and significant to the collecting community.”

90,000 Essay on Republicanism
Neo-Republicanism in its modern form originates in the political traditions of Ancient Rome, thinkers of medieval Italy, and Anglo-Saxon republican authors such as James Madison and James Garrington. A common feature of these political doctrines is the understanding of freedom as non-domination or a position of not being-in-the-will of someone. Isaiah Berlin’s well-known division of freedom into negative and positive. According to Berlin, negative freedom consists in the fact that “no person or group of people interferes with what I do, and coincides with the space in which I can indulge in my studies without hindrance” [Viroli, 2007], while while positive freedom “arises from the desire to be the master of oneself and to participate in the government, the creation of new laws and norms.”Berlin argues that true freedom is precisely negative, since positive freedom leads to tyranny. However, Berlin makes an important observation that negative freedom corresponds to the unlimited power of the state and can be given to people by an absolute ruler, which means that it can be the freedom of subjects.
Thomas Hobbes, who first formulated the negative ideal of freedom, did not see the difference between the situation of citizens in the republic and tyranny: freed from the service of the state than in Constantinople.Freedom is the same in both monarchical and democratic states. ” Hobbesian understanding of freedom is as follows: the less the sovereign regulates various forms of citizens’ activities with the help of laws, the freer they are.
The understanding of freedom in the republican tradition is completely different. This is freedom not from laws, but thanks to laws. The priority is not freedom from external interference (for example, the laws of the state), but the absence of domination by other citizens or the state. Dominance in the understanding of the Republicans is the ability of uncontrolled interference of any person in human activities.Dominance is common in everyday life. The position of a wife whose husband occasionally applies physical force to her; the position of a student, whose teacher gives marks, guided not by the real knowledge of students, but by personal preferences; The position of an employee who must please his boss in order not to lose his job. There is a well-known way to check the degree of freedom of a person in the republican tradition – a person is free to the extent that he can directly and confidently look into the eyes of others, thereby sharing the awareness of equal civil status.
It is important to note two aspects of negative freedom (hereinafter – freedom as non-interference), which become the objects of criticism of the Republicans. First, the belief that only interference is the reason for the restriction of freedom. The objections of the Republicans on this score are as follows: a person may not be limited in his desires to do what he pleases, but this person is not free if he is under someone’s authority, and the ruler can violate freedom at any time. Imagine yourself in the shoes of a servant whose master does not interfere in your life.“If the masters or rulers are kind or weak, or stupid, or have no interest in suppression, servants or subjects can enjoy the freedom to do more or less what they want” [Viroli, 2007]. However, this situation is fragile. If the master does not interfere with the life of the servants today, this does not mean that he cannot do so in the future. The life of a servant in this case is defined by the term potestate domini – submission to the authority of the master, but not sui juris – full legal capacity, a necessary position for a free person. Thus, even the potential for interference is sufficient to call an individual unfree or dominated.
Another claim of the Republicans to freedom as non-interference is that the republican tradition allows interference, but not on the basis of arbitrariness, but on the basis of the law: “An official or government body that interferes in a person’s life, but at the same time are forced to take into account his interests and ideas have no enslaving power over those who are exposed… It [the official] intervenes because it acts on the basis of the law, which is always coercive, but its interference is not arbitrary ”[Pettit, 1997]. In this case, it is important to have a permanently functioning constitutional order that does not allow the authorities to intervene on the basis of arbitrariness.
This logic leads us to a paradox – if a criminal is punished in full accordance with the letter of the law and ended up in jail, then he remains free, remaining locked up.Obviously, for Hobbes’s understanding of freedom, such a situation is unacceptable. However, as Pettit notes, it is possible that a system of law exists that, while punishing criminals, will be guided by the constitutional order and avoid domination. On the other hand, there are Leviathan-like authoritarian systems of law that dominate individuals. The republican tradition sees a huge difference between such systems, while for the supporters of freedom as non-interference there is no fundamental difference, since the source and nature of the interference is not important for them.
In this regard, it is interesting to consider the divergence of views on the ontology welfare state in the libertarian and republican traditions.
Libertarians perceive any economic invasion, including forced taxation, as a violation of individual freedom. Thus, libertarians understand freedom as laissez-faire. Libertarian theory appeals to the idea of charity: social support of the poor is carried out by voluntary donations from the rich. Moreover, tax cuts to increase the number of donations are encouraged.
For Republicans, the issue of the welfare state is the issue of protection from domination that arises from the inequitable distribution of resources, lack of education and inequality in access to quality medicine. Thus, the task of the republican state is to create an effective social protection. Taxation is not perceived as a violation of freedom, as the collection of taxes can be controlled by government intervention.
In short, the republican view of the welfare state differs from the libertarian view in three respects. Republicans see no violation of freedom in the broad economic powers of the state. Moreover, a fair distribution of resources is necessary to guarantee non-dominance. Finally, charity is an unacceptable resource allocation tool that makes those citizens dependent on those who are forced to receive help from the wealthier.
Philip Pettit identifies several features of republicanism that allow us to tell us that republicanism is a realistic political ideal.
i. Antimoralism. The moralistic approach begins with the conviction that morality is a relevant criterion for judging the political, even if this ethics is alien to the society in question. Hence, there are two conclusions: first, we accept a certain ethical system, deriving from it an “ideal” theory. Secondly, we must look at the actions of political agents through the prism of the derived “ideal” theory.
Neo-Republicanism avoids such rhetoric. Republicans believe dominance is a condition that most people are familiar with from their experience. Therefore, the notion of non-dominance is not “constructed” by philosophers, but embodies the desired form of human relations. Moreover, non-domination is not an abstract political doctrine, because political institutions aimed at combating domination also help to solve a number of pressing political problems. In particular, the fight against domination makes it possible to improve the social security of citizens: medicine, education and working conditions. We will analyze this aspect of neo-republican theory in more detail in the next part, where we will consider the activities of the Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero.
ii . Antideontologism and Antitranscendentalism. Any normative theory builds up a series of criteria for evaluating political action. Serving such an assessment can be a set of rules imposed on citizens, thereby limiting their actions; such a criterion can also be the general civil telos, which sets the direction of the political movement.
John Rawls’ theory of justice is an example of the first approach. He explores the ways in which citizens should act in order to build a just society.Achieving the common good, therefore, presupposes a general agreement on the observance of two principles of justice, or the existence of institutions that oblige them to be observed.
The problem with this approach is that it does not provide for a lack of general consensus. Rawls equates what citizens must do and the conditions for achieving a just society: “Rawls’s approach … contains a rather formal and crude simplification of the serious multifaceted task of combining the operation of the principles of justice with the real behavior of people, which is the main a question of practical reasoning about social justice ”[Sen, 2010].After all, there may be a case in which not everyone is ready to follow the prescribed rules. In particular, Gerald Cohen gives the example of the rich who are not motivated to benefit their society according to two principles of justice. We can condemn the rich, but what if this criticism is ineffective?
Amartya Sen writes that the main task of political philosophy is to promote such a political ideal, with the help of which it is possible to rank imperfect regimes. If a political doctrine is not capable of giving such an assessment, then it can serve as a support for effective political decisions and the achievement of this ideal. Therefore, Sen criticizes Rawls for being too focused on describing an ideal society, which gives us no idea how to compare non-ideal regimes. The theory of justice does not allow us to determine the degree of deviation from the ideal of existing political regimes, since we do not have methods of comparing them and determining the inconsistency with the ideal regime: “If the theory of justice is to guide a reasonable choice of political programs, strategies or institutions, then the identification of types of perfectly fair social order is not it is considered neither obligatory nor sufficient ”[Sept, 2010].A more acceptable approach is to promote common measurable value, which helps to determine how much a society is different from the ideal in the degree of its justice.
Thus, we must satisfy two criteria: first, to show how general non-dominance will be realized in the absence of general consensus, and second, to show how we will compare regimes with the application of the ideal of non-dominance.
Republicanism tries to answer both questions. In a republican society, citizens are protected from domination by having a rich choice of social options at their disposal. In other words, citizens enjoy social justice. In particular, Pettit thinks that such an understanding of social justice can help us heuristically approach the problem of social inequality. One could go further and suggest the creation of a non-dominance index, similar to the Freedom House index or the Gini coefficient.
On the other hand, citizens have equal opportunities to participate in the formation of laws that establish the constitutional basis of society. This is what defines democratic justice. Thus, if our opinion is contrary to the opinion of the majority, then this should not put us in a losing position. Disagreement should not put us in a situation of uncontrolled interference.
iii. Dystopianism. Applicable political theory must not only set a unifying ideal for society and provide us with the tools to assess our political actions, but also provoke society to pursue achievable goals through the creation of sustainable practices and institutions. Thus, political theory must pay particular attention to political projects that are accessible and realistic. Desirability must imply availability.
Moreover, the republican approach implies stable institutions. A stable institution is an institution that remains tolerant of corruption even if each of its members pursues purely personal interests. Therefore, the strength of an institution is determined by its indifference to the good (virtue) of the participants in this institution and, as a consequence, intolerance to corruption. The republican tradition finds its basis for stable institutions in the concept of a mixed constitution. The essence of a mixed constitution is to exercise control over elected politicians between elections. This is one of the essential features of republican rule – such classics of republican thought such as Polybius, Machiavelli, Harrington and, of course, Madison in his “Notes of a Federalist” spoke of a mixed constitution. Despite the differences in details, all thinkers assigned the constitution one role – that of the protector of the existing regime.Even Polybius noted that without a proper constitutional order, the monarchy will evolve into tyranny, the aristocracy into oligarchy, and democracy into ochlocracy. Only a mixed constitution can protect political institutions from corruption, and therefore from their disintegration. With the help of a system of checks and balances and constant monitoring on the part of civil society, it is possible for institutions to function successfully and prevent corrupt citizens from coming to power.
Pettit identifies several restrictions that the republican constitutional order puts forward in relation to political institutions:
1. Follow the established laws (Rule-of-law constraint). It is necessary to ensure that the political institution operates in accordance with the established principles of non-domination and does not favor an individual or a group.
2. Not to violate the personal rights of citizens (Private-right constraints).
3. Publicity (Invigilation constraints). The political institution should publish its projects, the reasons for its implementation and encourage its discussion in the civilian environment.
4. Separation-of-power constraints.
Necessity of outsourcing to outside organizations in the event of a conflict of interest in a political institution (Outsourcing constraints).
5. Use of third-party political procedures in case of impossibility of consensus within a political institution (Tie-breaking contraints), for example, a popular referendum.
6. Possibility of constitutional change through the overwhelming consent of the civilian population.
Based on a mixed constitution as the basis of its political order, the government is guided by an egalitarian expression of common civic interests, thereby relying on stable institutions. The very fact that republicanism emphasizes the description of institutions helps to overcome the utopianism inherent in many political theories. For example, Gerald Cohen writes about the abstract concept of justice, believing that its institutional implementation should not be the subject of philosophers’ reasoning.
iv. Antivanguardism. Vanguards are politicians who run the state in an authoritarian way; they treat people not as fellow citizens, but as servants; they speak from the perspective of a master or teacher, like those who supposedly have more competence in making political decisions.
Let’s define democracy as equal control of all citizens over the adoption of laws to which they obey. What, then, do we say about a society that, for example, deprived women of the right to vote through a democratic procedure? This example leads to the conviction that the essence of democracy lies not in equal access to participation in the adoption of laws, but in the guarantee of this equal access, which is ensured by the constitutional order. Therefore, an important component of democracy, according to the Republicans, is to impose some restrictions on political action, on how the demos use their kratos.

# Hall of Fame # NBA: 1959 – # Bob Pettit
A man who could not do anything, but achieved everything – this is about Pettit. It’s hard to believe that this basketball player, who was rejected by the school team for two years in a row, who was so skinny after college that no one predicted a good professional career for him, will become the best forward of his generation.
But Pettit’s appearance has always been
deceiving. He was seen as lacking in mass – and was actually in better physical shape than any other forward in the league. He could not dribble – he didn’t have to, because he could score points from any point where the ball was passed to him. Twice he was able to win the bombing race – and during these years he was named the Most Valuable Player in the NBA.
“I never intended to be the leader of my team. I was not the guy who talks a lot. I just wanted everyone to see that I work hard, that I always give my best. “Realizing that he could not be as subtle and skillful a player as #Dolph Shayes or #Ed Macauley, Pettit realized that he needed to take his athleticism, and became one of the first to focus on gaining muscle mass, a kind of Malone black and white basketball. Previously, it was believed that weight loads on the arms would ruin the shot, but this did not happen with Pettit, but he never dropped a pass from his partners, did not concede position under the basket and pulled out rebounds even from those who jump higher.
As a center and later a forward in college and early in the NBA, Bob is accustomed to playing both back to the rim and facing off. Therefore, Pettit just got the ball close to the ring, and a few seconds later ran back to defense after scoring two points. Unless, of course, he was fouled on. And he also shot fouls remarkably – 76% in his career. A grandmaster’s figure for a big man, especially considering what balls and rings were like in those days. In his last 64/65 season, Pettit finished seventh in the entire league in free-kick percentage.
The peak of his career was the sixth game of the 1958 championship series, in which Pettit scored 50 points and which secured him the only title of his career. That season, Pettit broke his arm – but did not go to the infirmary, but continued to play and even became the MVP of the All-Star Game with a plaster cast on his arm. And when he received the first injury, which incapacitated him for an extended period, Bob decided that he did not want to risk his health anymore and ended his career at 32.
In 11 years in the league, Pettit played 11 times at the MVZ, 11 times included in the symbolic team of the season (and only once in the second, in his last season, when he missed 30 games), 10 times was in the top 4 in terms of scoring (again, except for the last year). In each season, he scored at least 20 points per game and made at least 12 rebounds, which eventually resulted in sixth place in NBA history on points per game (26.4) and third in rebounds (16.2 after Wilt and Bill ). At the time of his retirement, he was the first on points in NBA history in both the regular season and the playoffs.
Numbers will not describe all the greatness of Pettit, but such is our project – about numbers.
Rating for 1959:
1. Bob Pettit – 198 90 109 2. # Bill Sherman – 172 90 109 3.# Harry Gallatin – 135

Minsk residents again came to support the O’Petit coffee shop, where the protesters were hiding
The shop window of the cafe was broken during the arrests on September 6: people wearing masks and with truncheons broke the door and took several people out
Photo: Instagram
Near the O ‘coffee shop Petit in the center of Minsk for the second day there is a long line.People came to support the owners of the establishment, whom the security forces knocked out the door and smashed glass on September 6, reports the Tut.by portal.
During the “March of Unity” on Sunday, arrests began and several protesters took refuge in a coffee shop. The workers locked the front door with a key, but people in masks and with truncheons began to break it and smashed shop windows. Bursting into the room, they grabbed several people, among whom, perhaps, were ordinary visitors.
In one of the attackers, eyewitnesses recognized the head of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus Nikolai Karpenkov. The press secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Olga Chemodanova did not deny or confirm this information. She said that the protesters provoked the police officers, who first asked to open the door. Here is what a coffee shop employee told the Tut.by portal:
“People started running in, we closed the door. Then about 15-20 people in masks came here and started breaking glass, took several people. The girls were not touched, only the guys, but not all were taken away either. I don’t know, maybe there are three or four people. Maybe they were released, we didn’t see, everyone was inside. “
A visitor to the cafe Andrei Ustinovich lives in the house where the coffee shop is located. He, too, as a sign of support, came to the establishment the day before and stood in line.
– An hour stood, it was already necessary to run on business. I thought maybe the queue would dissipate later, came back two hours later, in my opinion, it became even larger. People are completely strangers to each other. Our people in Belarus are mostly calm, introverts, do not make noise. All honestly stood in the rain, we all have such a mood now. The place, of course, is very intelligent here, ballerinas and opera singers live in the 1968 house – the Opera House is not far from here, a house was built for them. All these grandmothers and grandfathers saw all this through the window, which happened literally under their balcony. And people began to publish on social networks what happened to the cafe, I also wrote, photographed this broken glass. I talked to the investigator who arrived, he took me for the owner of the cafe, my namesake. I described everything honestly. I say: there are photographs of the colonel who personally smashed the cafe, just personally beat them with a stick, then dragged people across the floor, dragged them along the glass. To which the investigator replied that not everything can be as it looks in photographs or video.People understand that this will be blocked. We, of course, have no confidence in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
– How did the cafe cope with so many customers?
– People just started bringing milk, water – everything they need. Instantly people got organized, they just gave the guys $ 300 in two hours, I’m not talking about the number of cups of coffee they sold there. They write that 700 cups were sold both before lunch and after lunch.
Café O’Petit, a small French-style establishment, only opened in early 2020.This is the first business for the owners. The room is designed for only 12 people.
On the same evening, when the windows were broken in the cafe, Minsk residents brought boards and plywood to close the holes. Now new glass has already been installed, and entrepreneurs have repaired the door free of charge, reports Onliner.

The Soyuz lander has successfully landed in Kazakhstan :: Society :: RBK
Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, NASA astronaut Donald Pettit and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut André Cowpers, who completed their mission to the ISS, landed in Kazakhstan on July 1.The landing took place in normal mode, according to the website of the Mission Control Center.
Photo: Photo: NASA
The way home for the cosmonauts began at 08:47 Moscow time, when the Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft, on which they were staying, undocked from the ISS.Two hours later, at an altitude of 420 kilometers, its propulsion system was put into braking mode. At 11:47 a.m. the Soyuz descent vehicle separated from the ship itself.
When the distance to the Earth was 700 meters, the main parachutes were deployed. The landing took place at 12:14 Moscow time in Kazakhstan, 148 kilometers from the city of Zhezkazgan.
To help space travelers get out of the descent capsule, employees of search and evacuation services arrived at the site. It is assumed that after passing a medical examination, the landed people will be delivered to the airfield of the city of Karaganda, from where they will be transported to the Moscow region.
During their work at the International Space Station O. Kononenko, D. Pettit and A. Kaupers conducted more than 30 scientific experiments. The duties of the captain were performed by a Russian. After he left his post, another representative of our country, Gennady Padalka, was appointed head of the crew.
By agreement between the Mission Control Center, the American agency NASA and the European ESA, the new expedition will leave for the ISS on July 15. The launch of the manned spacecraft will take place from the Baikonur base in Kazakhstan. The docking of the spacecraft with the station should take place two days later.
