Minsk and Tashkent tied themselves with diplomatic relations 25 years ago, and if the Belarusian side hastened to immediately open its embassy in Uzbekistan, then the partners decided to take such a step only this year.
Alexander Lukashenko and the first Uzbek President Islam Karimov did not have warm feelings towards each other. This also affected the dynamics of cooperation between countries.
“Love and dislike” of Lukashenka and the presidents of Uzbekistan
The coming to power of the new president Shavkat Mirziyoyev marked a qualitatively new stage in bilateral relations, in which there was a place for oil, and cotton, and even the poems of Yakub Kolas. Sputnik has collected the most important of the three-hour talks between the two presidents.
Black and white gold
The place of meeting and negotiations was the Kuksaroy residence, which sounds quite romantic in translation – the Blue Palace. According to the established tradition, the President of Uzbekistan receives all distinguished foreign guests in this residence.
Alexander Lukashenko was greeted as a dear guest. The whole host of local nobles lined up in front of him, the anthems of independent Belarus and Uzbekistan were played, soldiers were marching.
In general, the situation that prevailed all around hinted that it would be possible to agree on everything.
The presidents talked in private and in the presence of officials for three hours, and the official press services mutually and in a complementary way describe the nature of the negotiations.
Observing all the traditions accepted in the East, the leaders did not skimp on epithets, describing the progress that has been made in the relations of the countries over the past two years. Having finished with protocol courtesies, they moved on to a business conversation.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev recalled a seemingly obvious thing – Uzbekistan has rich natural resources. This was followed by a specific proposal to participate in the development of oil fields.
“The same oil and gas industry. Your science is developing, but we have wells,” he outlined everything very clearly.
Two presidents and cotton, real white gold, which provides Uzbekistan with currency, did not pass by.
And if the Uzbek president offered to grow and process it together for sale in the markets of third countries, then his Belarusian counterpart was much more specific in words.
Alexander Lukashenko said that during the Soviet era, Uzbek cotton was processed not just anywhere, but at the plant in Baranovichi. “We need to return to this again and make it mutually beneficial. We are ready,” he said.
Opposite the palace
If in the era of Islam Karimov there was no worthy diplomatic representation in Minsk, then the second president of independent Uzbekistan resolved this issue in a positive way and quickly. This step was also appreciated by Alexander Lukashenko.

“You have opened an embassy with us. And we will select the best place opposite the Palace of Independence, if you risk a beautiful embassy in the Uzbek style, how do you build palaces here,” — proposed by the Belarusian leader.
After that, the moved Shavkat Mirziyoyev admitted at all that he had “an old dream – to open an embassy in Belarus.” And he immediately added that it should have been opened a long time ago, since there are such friendly relations between the countries.
“If necessary, let you have your own corner of the earth in the center of Europe, from where you can work for the entire European region,” Alexander Lukashenko warmly supported him.

Belarus and Uzbekistan in recent years have managed to increase mutual trade, but, according to the leadership, it does not correspond to the opportunities that the countries have.

The figure of mutual trade of $1 billion was not taken out of thin air. Shavkat Mirziyoyev explained this indicator by the fact that he independently analyzed everything and calculated just such a size of potential mutual trade. And he assured that the bar would be taken, the main thing is that the officials fulfill their instructions with Alexander Lukashenko.
“I dreamed of $500 million and came here with it. But when I heard from the president that a billion is not far off, I thought: thank you, Lord. If the president talks about it, then there is a goal. We are ready for this”, the Belarusian president volunteered.
Minsk and Tashkent build their foreign policy based on the axiom that the best foundation for relations between countries is the economy.
“If there is an economy, there will be friendly relations and everything else,” Alexander Lukashenko promised.
The armor is strong, and our tanks are fast
It is not surprising that in such a favorable atmosphere in a good mood, in a really summer atmosphere compared to Belarus, the presidents agreed on the modernization of Uzbek military equipment.

“On your base we can create appropriate factories and modernize Su, MiG, armored personnel carriers, and tanks – there is a sea of this equipment in this region,” the Belarusian leader noted.
