About WestConn Athletics
The men and women both belong to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. The football program is a member of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. The 17 other intercollegiate athletic programs are members of the Little East Conference. The University belongs to conferences and associations appropriate to the specific athletic activity program. The Center For Student Involvement supervises and coordinates intramural and recreational activities for WestConn.
National Prominence
In addition to realizing record growth, WestConn continues to compete on a national level. The fall of 2018 was perhaps one of the best with both soccer programs, field hockey and volleyball qualifying for Conference Tournaments and the men’s and women’s soccer programs earning NCAA bids.
In the spring of 2021, during the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, WestConn’s women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis teams captured the LEC title and the automatic berth in the national tournament. I was the women’s lacrosse first-ever appearance and second for the netters. WesConn continues to add to its NCAA post-season appearances which include championship play in women’s soccer (14), women’s basketball (13), softball (13), men’s basketball (13), men’s soccer (10), women’s volleyball (6), football (1985, 1999 and 2001), baseball in 2002 and men’s lacrosse in 2008. Both the women’s and men’s tennis teams made their first NCAA appearance in 2010. Softball advanced to the Division III College World Series in 2002 and the women’s soccer team appeared in the NCAA Division III College Cup during the fall of 2007. Men’s basketball advanced to the Elite 8 in 1990 while the women’s basketball program appeared in the Sweet 16 in 1997.

General Transfer Information
An athletics staff member or other representatives of the institution’s athletics interests shall not make any contact in any manner with the student-athlete of another NCAA or NAIA four-year collegiate institution, directly or indirectly, without first obtaining written permission to do so, regardless of who makes the initial contact.
If you are currently at a Division III institution, you can complete the NCAA self-release form. Email it to the compliance officer Scott Ames at (203) 837-9050. This form will allow contact between you and the WestConn coach for up to 30 days beginning with the date the permission to contact form was signed by the student-athlete.
Once the initial self-release form has been received, no representative from WestConn is allowed to contact your current institution. After the 30-day window, WestConn may contact your current school if you decide to pursue a transfer. Other options and parameters regarding a second release and an additional 30 days will be explained to you during the process. Although we are not allowed to contact your current institution during this process, we highly encourage you to talk to your current coach about a possible transfer to Western Connecticut State University.
If you are currently attending a Division I or II institution, you must obtain a written release stating that your current school grants WestConn permission to contact you.
This permission can be obtained through the director of athletics or compliance officer at your current Division I or II institution. Your compliance officer will contact WestConn directly. At that point you may contact the coach or he/she may contact you.

In excess of 500 student-athletes compete as part of WestConn’s intercollegiate athletic program each year.

Financial Aid and Student Employment
WestConn offers financial aid to help qualified students meet their educational expenses. The staff of Financial Aid and Student Employment is available to assist students in determining their eligibility for the various sources of aid available. While not every one will qualify for assistance, a student should never assume he/she is ineligible without first applying.
A wide spectrum of variables affect the application process, therefore many possible options exist that may pertain to a students particular circumstances.
The evaluation of one’s financial need is based on an analysis of several factors; such as, student and/or family income, family size, assets and liabilities, and the number of family members in school. In addition to the above, the school’s total allocation of funds for an academic year is also a factor that determines the amount of aid a student can receive. Therefore, meeting the application deadline, along with assessing the students financial need, become an important factors in the financial aid process.
All financial aid recipients must apply annually to qualify for assistance, and must maintain satisfactory academic progress.

As a result of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), financial aid administrators and university staff at WestConn are prohibited from disclosing personal information relating to student financial and academic records.
While we realize that many parents take a leading role in helping their children apply for financial aid, please understand that our financial aid staff are limited in the type of information they can share with you over the phone and in person without the student’s written permission.
Students must complete and submit a Student Consent Form to the Registrar’s Office (Old Main 102) in order to provide parental/guardian or third-party access to information. This form is optional.

Student exchange
WCSU is a member institution of ISEP, so our students can study at member universities at no additional price beyond what it costs to attend WCSU. Students spend semesters at universities all over the world, attend faculty-led short courses abroad, and spend semester breaks at service learning activities around the globe. Theatre students make biannual visits to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and some are invited to participate in the national Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Washington, DC, where our musicals have won awards for acting, directing, and production.
Campus life
Students who choose to live on campus are housed in six residence halls. Safe and comfortable, with 24/7 University Police presence and full security systems, accommodations range from classic dorm room living to full apartments. Students can have their cars on campus, where there is free parking and there’s also complimentary shuttle transportation between campuses that runs continuously.
Activities and athletics
Student clubs and athletics are a great part of the WCSU experience. Activities include an active Greek council, a campus radio station, and many social and academic-based student organizations. You’ll enjoy learning at our observatory and planetarium, exploring the 350-acre nature preserve on our Westside campus, and having fun at outdoor concerts, performances, and food festivals at the Ives Concert Park.
With spirited fans to cheer them on, our NCAA Division III teams meet challengers on home courts and fields, in the 2,500-seat stadium of our Athletic Complex, or away at rival schools.
At Midtown, you’ll find the Fitness Zone and the Bill Williams Gymnasium, which is host to our intramural leagues. Our Westside campus is home to the William A. O’Neill Athletic and Convocation Center, which houses a six-lane pool, four full courts for basketball and volleyball and a fitness center. The Westside Athletic Complex has three spacious practice fields and six lighted tennis courts.

Western Connecticut State University to Add Men’s Swimming for 2018
The athletic department at Western Connecticut State University has announced the addition of four new varsity programs, with men’s swimming and diving among the new teams.
Western Connecticut State is an NCAA Division III school.
WestConn already has a women’s program, which has been coached by Jill Scott for nearly two decades. Scott is now in her 18th season as the WestConn head coach. According to the press release on the WestConn website, which is in full below, Scott will integrate the men’s team into a combined program.
Besides men’s swimming, WestConn will welcome new men’s and women’s cross country and men’s golf programs. All four new teams are expected to start their first seasons beginning in fall of 2018.
DANBURY, CT – Western Connecticut State University will be adding NCAA men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf and men’s swimming and diving as Division III varsity intercollegiate programs and will play a full schedule in the fall of 2018-19, announced Director of Athletics Lori R. Mazza today. The addition of these four programs brings WestConn’s varsity athletics sponsorship up to 18 programs and is the first expansion since the University re-established the field hockey program in 2005.
“We are very excited about the expansion of our department,” added Mazza. “The offerings selected reflect the interest within our region and our ongoing commitment to recruit student-athletes with added opportunities for students who want to be a part of their collegiate experience.
The university is in the process of designing a cross country course on the school’s Westside campus. Additionally, to establish a home golf course, discussions between WestConn administrators and managers of several public and private courses are ongoing.
The men’s swimming and diving team will compete in the O’Neill Center Natatorium in conjunction with the women’s program. Jill Cook has been the head coach of the women’s program for the past 18 seasons and intends to take the helm of the men’s program next season. The swim season for both typically runs from October to February.
Mazza and the university will immediately begin efforts to hire part-time head coaches for the men’s and women’s cross country and men’s golf programs.
Mazza noted that The Little East Conference (LEC) sponsors championships for men’s and women’s cross country with the possibility of men’s golf, pending LEC approval. Additionally, the WestConn men’s swimming and diving program will initially compete as an independent while seeking a more permanent conference affiliation.

Although Western Connecticut State University is a public institution, it does not offer an open admissions policy. Students wishing to attend Western Connecticut State University must meet minimum requirements as part of the admissions process. Students will need to supply their GPA, class rank status, high school records,TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores if applicable, and complete a College Prep Program. Students will also need to submit standardized test results for either the SAT or ACT. Nearly all students (98 percent ) submit SAT test score results. There is an admissions fee and the college admits roughly 58 percent of its applicants.

Western Connecticut State University offers students a numerous amount of services to support students academically. There are a number of services, including an on-campus child care center, distance learning, career counseling, personal counseling and substance abuse counseling. The college also offers its students career services, student employment services, disability services, remedial services, part-time study options, options to study abroad, double major services, honors programs, campus housing and meal plans.
The university has two libraries. The Ruth A.
Haas Library is located at the center of the Midtown Campus. It was built in 1969 and renovated in 2000. The 90,000-square foot building has six floors, and is open 82 hours per week.
The Robert S. Young Library is located in the Westside Classroom Building, which is home to the Ancell School of Business. Opened in October 1982, it serves as a memorial to Danbury businessman Robert S. Young, former President of Fairfield Processing. It is organized like a corporate library and supports the departments of accounting, finance, management, marketing, management information systems. The library is known as for its reference section, which has a number of business handbooks, almanacs, encyclopedias and directories. The library has set up its homepage on the college’s website to give users access to a number of internet and online sources.
The Ruth A. Haas Library also has federal government documents, education sources, and a liberal arts collection. The libraries share access to other Connecticut State University libraries.

Athletics
Western Connecticut State University is a member of the NCAA. There are a number of athletic programs students may choose to participate in. The athletics sports programs include baseball, basketball, track and field, football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball. The football program is part of the Freedom Football Conference. The basketball, baseball and track and field programs are all part of the Little East Conference. The college’s nickname is the “Colonials.”
Local Community
The city of Danbury is in northern Fairfield County. According the the 2010 Census the population was 80,893. The city of Danbury is the seventh largest city in Connecticut. Danbury is nicknamed the “Hat City” because of its production of hats around 1912. The National Hat Factory in Danbury, Connecticut produced more than 25 percent of all the hats in America.
The city of Danbury’s top employers include: Boehringer, Ingelheim, Danbury Hospital, Danbury Public School System, Cartus, Western Connecticut State University, the City of Danbury, Goddrich, Barden, Praxair, and Ethan Allen.
There are a number of private schools in the city of Danbury, including Aderson Montessori School, Colonial Hills Christian Academy, Hudson Country Montessori School, New England Country Day School, New Hope Chrisitan Academy, Maimonides Academy, Wooster School, and the Immanuel Lutheran School.
There are several hiking trails in Danbury Connecticut including the Bear Mountain Reservation, The Old Quarry Nature Center, which is a thirty-nine acre nature center with two seperate education trails. The Tarry Mansion and Park is the most popular park in Danbury. Danbury is the home to many other parks as well, inlcuding Danbury, Candlewood Park, Elmwood Park, Halters Community Park, Kenosia Park, Richter Park, Rogers Park, and Tarrywile Park.
The are also several museums in the small city of Danbury, Connecticut. There is the Danbury Museum and Historical Society, the Danbury Railway Museam, and the Military Museam of Southern England.
Additional School Information
Western Connecticut State University participates in the American Democracy Project, developed by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the New York Times. It is a multi-campus project that engages students, and helps them understand and participate in civic engagement on many different levels. The project aims to produce graduates who understand and are willing to actively participate in civic engagement programs and government.
The college opened an astronomy center in 1987. The Center for Galactic Astronomy was created with grant money from the National Science Foundation, along with other sources. It us used by the college and other agencies to carry on the study the evolution of the galaxy.
Western Connecticut State University also features two observatories. The Midtown Observatory is located in the Science Building of the Midtown campus, and is used for classes, research and public viewing of the stars. The Westside Observatory is located on the Westside campus. There are fewer public viewings there, and visitors are urged to call ahead.
Inside the Westside Observatory is the Planetarium, which seats 40 people. The room is used for educational purposes and science program presentations along with scout groups. The school posts a viewing schedule on its website.

Western Connecticut State University Baseball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Little East Conference (LEC) announced its 2021 Baseball All-LEC selections and major award recipients, following a vote of the league’s head coaches. Western Connecticut State University’s junior catcher Zach Edwards (Seymour, Conn.) and senior shortstop Logan Terry (Ellington, Conn.) are honored on this year’s Third Team.
Edwards, WestConn’s nearly every-day catcher, batted .294, had three doubles and scored nine runs. Behind the dish, he committed just one error in 71 chances for a .986 average and threw out seven of 18 would-be stolen base attempts.
Terry appeared in 15 games and batted .304 in his final season, tying junior Max Gregory
(Jewitt City, Conn.) for the team lead. Terry belted one home run, a trip and four doubles for .464 slugging percentage. On defense, he recorded a .914 fielding percentage with just six errors on 70 fielding chances.
WestConn competed in a LEC only schedule this spring after losing the entire 2020 season to COVID. Health and saftey precautions made it very diffcult to be at the top of their games, but it was neccessary for the saftey of the sudent/athletes. Of 15 games the squad only won 2, but over Nationally ranked teams in UMASS Boston and S. Maine. Coach Susi was out for almost the entire season after having neck surgery in mid March, but the Assistant Coaches (Chris Arconti, Dan Krot, Tyler Robertson and CJ Angelo) did an outstanding job keeping the program afloat in Susi’s absence. Also Trainer Pete Algarin ‘s help was oustanding. Coach Susi did return for the final 5 games.

Following the unexpected end to the 2020 season, it was time for the second All-Decade team of the century. Three teams and honorable mentions were assembled from the list of All-Americans, All-Region and record setting players who played at least two years in the decade. Following the blueprint in compiling the previous All-Decade team, eighty-two players were selected for the 2010’s All-Decade team.
Western Connecticut State University Hall of Famer Conor Bierfeldt was honored on the Honorable Mention Team after a stellar career in a Colonials’ uniform. The multi-category program record holder batted .412 with 24 home runs, 47 doubles, 13 triples, 148 runs batted in and scored 126 runs from 2010-13 as an outfielder, catcher and right-handed pitcher. Bierfeldt was also a perfect 19-of-19 in stolen-base attempts during his career in Danbury, Conn.
He was named in both 2012 and 2013 as Baseball Player of the Year in the LEC, and also earned New England Player of the Year honors from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the American Baseball Coaches Association. Other honors included selections for three years to All-LEC and All-New England teams, and for two years to All-American collegiate squads.
The 2018 WCSU Hall of Fame inductee was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Biefeldt has played professional baseball with the Aberdeen IronBirds, Delmarva Shorebirds, Frederick Keys, Bowie Baysox, New Britain Bees and Rockland Boulders.

Founded in 1881 as Storrs Agricultural School . Named after brothers Charles and August Storrs, who donated land for the school and provided seed funding for free.

In 1940, a division was made into separate colleges and schools, reflecting the new university status. In the same year, the Faculty of Social Work and the School of Nursing appeared.
The conferring of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy began in 1949.
In 1960, the University Medical Center was opened in Farmington.
Funding
The public-private partnership program “UConn 2000” was developed with the aim of updating and expanding the capabilities of the university and operated from 1995 to 2005.Funded by the State of Connecticut, students and private donations.
The UConn 21st Century program is a continuation of the UConn 2000 program. It is planned to invest a billion dollars in order to renovate every building on campus, including regional offices.

NYI is an interdisciplinary university continuing education program that is held annually in St. Petersburg for undergraduate, graduate and young researchers in the field of linguistic, cognitive and cultural studies.
The main goal of the program – is to create a platform for professional academic communication between teachers, researchers and students from different universities in Russia and the world in such areas of humanitarian knowledge as formal linguistics, cognitive research, critical cultural studies, media research, etc. … The program is being held by Stony Brook University (New York State University, USA) for the 17th time, and this year it is hosted for the first time by the Russian State Pedagogical University.A. I. Herzen.
The NYI program has established itself in the Russian and international academic space as one of the leading summer continuing education programs. The NCAA, the main governing body of intercollegiate sports, divides its constituent organizations into divisions. Division I colleges tend to be the largest. They have the largest budgets for sports departments and their sports teams generate the most revenue. All schools that participate in the Bowl Games and March Madness are Division I schools. However, there are some regional colleges and small private schools that you may not be familiar with that are also Division I. In this article, I will give you an overview of Division I and a complete list of current Division I public schools.
UPDATE: NCAA Changes Due to COVID-19
As a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic , the NCAA has made temporary changes to the rules for player participation. First, potential Division I and II players who are initially enrolled in the 2021/2022 school year do not need to submit ACTION or SAT grades.Their eligibility to study will only depend on their GPA. In addition, the NCAA grants athletes an additional year of admission and competition season in Spring and Fall 2020. You can find more NCAA Division I updates here.
Why are there NCAA divisions?
NCAA units exist to create parity and level the playing field . By having divisions, schools must compete with other schools of a similar size and resources.However, in today’s NCAA sport, there can be huge differences between schools in the same division, especially Division I.
For example, from 2006 to 2011, the University of Alabama’s athletics revenue was $ 124,498,616. In the same period, Alabama State University athletics revenue was $ 10,614,081. Both schools are Division I schools. .
What makes Division I unique?
Compared to NCAA Division II & III schools, NCAA Division I schools have the largest student populations, largest athletic budgets, and most athletic scholarships..
All major sports conferences, including Big 10, Big 12, Pac 12 and ACC, are comprised of Division I colleges.
Although the Ivy League colleges are in the First Division, they do not offer athletic scholarships.
Division I Fun Facts
- Stanford University has the most NCAA Division I championships (126).
- On average, only 4% of Division I students participate in NCAA sports.
- Stanford won the Learfield Athletic Directors’ Cup, awarded to the most successful Division I athletics program every year from 1994-1995.
- The University of Oregon won the very first NCAA men’s basketball championship in 1939.
- Louisiana Institute of Technology won the very first NCAA women’s basketball championship in 1982.

How do I use this list?
If you are thinking of a college, you can determine if it is a Division I institution. If you are interested in a specific sport, check which colleges are in the first division in that sport. Some schools are in Division I for one or two sports and Division II or III for the rest. . For example, Colorado College is Division I for men’s hockey and women’s football, and the rest of the universities are Division III.
If you are interested in football, you should also check if the particular school is FBS, FCS, or even has a football program. .
