Ramapo College’s Athletic Division and Conference Affiliation
Ramapo College competes at the NCAA Division III level for athletics. As a Division III institution, Ramapo does not offer athletic scholarships and focuses on the overall student-athlete experience. The college is a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) for most sports.
Fan Engagement and Attendance at Ramapo College Sporting Events
Increasing fan attendance at athletic events is an ongoing priority for Ramapo College. The Athletic Department invests significant time and resources into promoting sporting events on a daily basis. However, building a strong fan culture takes time and effort.

Does Ramapo have club sports teams. Yes, the college is exploring the possibility of adding new club sports programs, including ice hockey. Starting a new club team requires careful consideration of factors like budget sustainability and student interest.
The Intramurals Department at Ramapo provides several fitness and martial arts-inspired programs for students, including:
- Kickboxing
- Zumba
- Tone & Core
- Spinning
These offerings allow students to engage in physical activity and learn new skills outside of traditional team sports. The Intramurals Department continually evaluates program options based on student demand and available resources.
Gender Equity in Ramapo College Athletics
As an NCAA Division III institution, Ramapo College must adhere to strict guidelines regarding gender equity in athletic opportunities. This commitment to providing equal opportunities for male and female student-athletes impacts decisions about adding new sports programs.
Can Ramapo add new men’s sports teams. At present, adding a men’s sport like lacrosse is not feasible due to gender equity considerations and budget constraints. The athletic department must maintain a balance between men’s and women’s sports offerings to comply with Title IX regulations.
Any potential expansion of varsity or club sports programs takes into account:
- Current gender balance in athletic participation
- Budget implications
- Facility and staffing requirements
- Student interest and demand
- Competitive landscape in the region
Athletic Department Communication and Transparency
The Ramapo College Athletic Department strives to maintain open lines of communication with students, fans, and the broader community. One way they facilitate this dialogue is through the “Ask the AD” feature, where individuals can submit questions directly to the Athletic Director.
How does the “Ask the AD” feature work. Community members can submit questions on various topics related to Ramapo athletics. The Athletic Director then provides detailed responses, addressing inquiries about topics such as:
- Sports offerings and potential new programs
- Fan engagement initiatives
- Intramural and club sports options
- Department policies and decision-making processes
- Facilities and resources
This open communication helps foster transparency and allows the department to gauge interest in various aspects of the athletic program. It also provides an opportunity to explain the rationale behind decisions and educate the community on the complexities of running a collegiate athletic department.
Future Developments in Ramapo College Athletics
The Athletic Department at Ramapo College continues to explore ways to enhance the student-athlete and fan experience. While budget constraints and regulatory considerations impact the ability to add new varsity sports, the department remains open to innovation and growth in other areas.
Is Ramapo considering webcasting athletic events. Yes, the Athletic Department is actively researching the possibility of webcasting games and matches. This initiative could potentially increase exposure for Ramapo sports and allow friends, family, and alumni to follow the teams remotely.
Other areas of potential future development include:
- Expansion of club sports offerings
- Enhanced facilities and training resources
- Increased community outreach and partnerships
- Development of leadership and career preparation programs for student-athletes
- Exploration of emerging sports and fitness trends
As with all decisions, the department will carefully weigh the costs and benefits of any new initiatives to ensure they align with the college’s mission and serve the needs of the student body.

As Ramapo College continues to develop its athletic programs and enhance the overall student-athlete experience, the support and engagement of the entire college community remain vital to its success. This Week’s Ask the AD Question…
Submitted by rcnjfan: April 20, 2011
Are there any discussions about how to get more fans at Ramapo games? There is no reason why the other sports teams should not be in attendance to support their fellow RCNJ athletes. Only a select few teams go to events.
The Athletic Department spends a lot of time and money promoting our sporting events on a daily basis. Generating more fan attendance is not something that will happen overnight. It will take us time to get where we would like to be and we continue to work hard to increase fan attendance.
Word of mouth is the best way to spread the word about events and the great student-athletes we have competing everyday for the College. Any help you can all give to positively spread the word would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for the support you give to our student-athletes and our athletic programs!

Does Ramapo have any ice hockey teams or intramural hockey teams to play on?
At this time Ramapo does not have a varsity ice hockey team. We are however exploring the option of starting a club ice hockey team. I say exploring becuase a lot goes into starting a new program, whether varsity or club. We need to ensure that we can start a program that can substain budget cuts and serve our students in a productive manner.
Thank you for your interest in Ramapo Athletics

Any chance that Ramapo may start a d3 mens lacrosse team?
At this time we could not start a men’s lacrosse team for gender equity and budget restraint issues. As a NCAA Division III institution, there are rules and regulations we must follow to ensure that gender equallity is offered in our department. Adding a men’s sport, as our department currently stands, is not a viable option. Also, with the state of the budget, adding any sports at this time would be close to impossible.
Thank you for your interest and support of Ramapo Athletics!

Is Ramapo looking into webcasting athletic events?
Webcasting our athletic events is something we are definitely interested in doing in the future. As with everything, there is a cost involved with broadcasting over the Internet. We are currently researching the costs and benefits to the department and our athletes and fans and hope to have a decision shortly.

A team is historically good. They continue to recruit and have top notch athlete’s. All of a sudden, there is a coaching change, for whatever reason. The team then starts losing to a ton of games, and to teams with lesser players. Who would be to blame here?
Thanks for your question. There are circumstances that you are not aware of, nor am I at liberty to discuss. With that being said, I will have no more comments about the Men’s Volleyball Program or any situation surrounding the program until the investigation process is completed. I am not a part of the investigation process.
Thanks again for your interest in Roadrunner Men’s Volleyball!

Why did you leave a Division I school to come to a Division III school as a temporary replacement?
With the sudden and tragic death of Mr. Michael Ricciardi, who used to work for me during my tenure as the Director of Athletics here at Ramapo College, I was asked to come back and assist both the College and the Department of Athletics to work through this very difficult situation. With my strong feelings for both the College and this Department, I decided to come back and help out.

What division is the Softball team?
Ramapo College is a Division III member of the NCAA and submits to the Division III philosophy, where the highest priority is on the overall educational experience of the student-athlete, as well as the successful completion of their academic careers. It also seeks to establish and maintain an environment in which a student’s athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of the student-athlete’s educational experience in which coaches, administrators, and support staff play a significant role as educators. We also seek to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity among our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and support staff.

So when is the football team coming back?
Due to financial constraints that both the college and the state of New Jersey are currently facing, I do not see football coming back in the near future. It is very costly and would probably cost around $20 million to restart the program and put the necessary infrastructure in place.
Also, why was it removed in the first place?
In 1992, due to college financial constraints, football was too expensive to maintain at that time. Thus, the college decided to keep other programs that were less costly.
