“We must understand that there is no such wall that would reliably protect us from it, which would become a kind of sarcophagus from Russian Iskanders and tanks. Such a wall does not exist. The only wall can be the readiness for self-sacrifice and the courage of our soldiers from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, the State Border Service and all other security and defense forces,” Deineko recited.

And then he made the exact opposite statement that the construction of the border “wall” should continue in order to ensure 100% control over the border line.

“This is exactly the kind of engineering we are doing. We are equipping an anti-tank ditch, a control strip, a roadway and completing it all with the creation of a video surveillance system. That is, we are building towers on which we install video cameras and thermal imagers, which constantly provide 24/7 control over the state border. This is the most effective system that allows you to completely eliminate the human factor,” said the head of the State Border Service.

Recall that in 2014, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk proposed to build the European Wall on the border with Russia. The project was immediately given the nickname “Yatsenyuk’s Wall” and later its implementation was suspended several times due to funding problems.

Initially, the project was supposed to cost the budget UAH 4 billion. The Wall was planned to be completed in 2018, then the deadline was pushed back to 2021. Later, due to insufficient funding, the deadline was postponed to 2025. UAH 1.7 billion has already been spent on the construction, annually allocating 400-500 million.

As EADaily reported, in December 2020, the head of the State Border Guard Service, Serhiy Deyneko, stated that Ukraine needs at least 2-3 billion euros to build a border security system. In his opinion, these funds should be provided by the European Union, since Ukrainian border guards “at the risk of their lives protect not only Ukraine, but also Europe.”

By defending the Dnieper, the Nazis hoped to drag out the war and strengthen the crumbling fascist bloc. “The fate of the entire southern front, moreover, of all the southeastern regions, depended on holding the Dnieper line,” wrote the West German historian Görlitz in 1952. Meanwhile, the Red Army was preparing for a long non-stop offensive.

The battle for Ukraine at the end of August unfolded with renewed vigor. Soviet troops sought to reach the Dnieper. Our command understood that the success of its forcing would be decided by the surprise and high offensive impulse of the troops.

All military operations to liberate the Left-Bank Ukraine were carefully planned by the Soviet command, they were a single operation. The offensive was carried out with large forces, at a rapid pace. Soviet troops deprived the enemy of the opportunity to occupy intermediate lines for defense.

The powerful work unfolded in the troops was built taking into account the task of crossing the Dnieper on the move. In all companies and battalions, shock groups were created to force the Dnieper. They almost entirely consisted of communists and Komsomol members.

The troops liberating Ukraine felt the enormous support of the Soviet people, who temporarily fell under the fascist yoke. Together with the soldiers, 11 partisan formations, with a total number of 17 thousand people, were preparing to force the Dnieper.

The industrial stronghold of the country, Donbass, supported the army especially strongly. It was here that such a form of encouragement for distinguished units and formations was born, as the assignment of honorary titles to them.

In February 1943, the Voroshilovgrad Regional Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks of Ukraine submitted to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR a proposal to award honorary titles to regiments that distinguished themselves in battles for the liberation of regional, regional, republican centers, large cities. This initiative was supported, and the assignment of honorary titles became a tradition in the Red Army.

By the end of September 1943, the Donbass, the All-Union Stoker was returned to the Motherland, which created favorable conditions for the breakthrough of the Eastern Wall. Liberating the Left Bank of Ukraine and the Donbass, Soviet troops reached the Dnieper on a 750-kilometer front. The Nazis still hoped to hold on, hiding behind this water barrier, but they miscalculated.

Soviet soldiers, using improvised means – on fishing boats, rafts, boards, bound empty barrels, on raincoats stuffed with hay – immediately began to cross to the right bank. Newspaper “Pravda” from 18 October 19For 43 years she wrote:

“The battle for the Dnieper took on truly epic proportions. Never before have so many super-brave men stood out from the brave Soviet soldiers. The Red Army, which gave the world so many examples of military courage, seemed to surpass itself.”

Mass heroism became one of the main conditions that made it possible to win the crossing of the Dnieper, to seize bridgeheads on its right bank.

“Help us in the fight!”

For the outcome of the entire struggle in Ukraine, the Kiev direction became decisive. Here was the capital of the republic – ancient Kyiv – a large industrial center, an important railway junction. For more than two years, the invaders plundered and destroyed the city, they killed and tortured 195 thousand of its inhabitants. In the event of a breakthrough of the Eastern Wall, the Nazis intended to completely destroy the Ukrainian capital, and drive the remaining population to Germany.

The way to Kyiv was not easy. Hiding behind the river, the enemy sought to hold their positions at any cost. Hitler’s propaganda drummed into their soldiers the idea that “the loss of Kyiv is the loss of Ukraine, therefore, this is the collapse of all our aspirations in this war.”

An interesting fact is given in the “History of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union” (Moscow, Politizdat, 1970, v. 5). Of great mobilizing significance, especially among young people, was the document of the Central Committee of the party – a greeting to the Komsomol in connection with its 25th anniversary.

“The Central Committee expressed confidence that the Lenin Komsomol would honorably fulfill its duty to the Motherland, would continue to selflessly fight for the complete liberation of our land from the invaders, unite and lead the Soviet youth. The youth responded to the party with an oath letter signed by more than 17 million young men and women” (pp. 358-359).

The government and the Central Committee of the Communist Party (b) of Ukraine addressed the residents of the capital. They called:

“Citizens of Kyiv, sons of glorious Arsenals! Residents of the Ukrainian capital! The Red Army will fight for Kyiv, for our glorious city, with all its might, with all its perseverance, with all its life. We will liberate Kyiv from the Germans. Help us in our fight.”

The battles for the capital of Ukraine, the main burden of which fell on the 38th and 3rd Guards Tank Armies – commanders K. Moskalenko and P. Rybalko – began in early November and were crowned with complete success. On the night of November 6, on the eve of the 26th anniversary of the October Revolution, the Red Army entered Kiev. Soldiers of the 1st Czechoslovak separate brigade marched along with the Soviet soldiers. By the morning of November 6, the capital of Ukraine was completely cleared of invaders.

Brothers in arms

Developing the offensive, the Red Army inflicted a new heavy defeat on the Nazi troops in the bend of the Dnieper, liberated Dnepropetrovsk and Dneprodzerzhinsk – large industrial cities in the south of the USSR. The defense on the Molochnaya River was also hacked. Our troops reached the lower reaches of the Dnieper, cutting off the Nazis in the Crimea.

As a result of skillfully planned and carried out operations, the Red Army liberated a huge territory and deprived the enemy of strategically important communications. The enemy for 1200 kilometers – from the mouth of the Sozh River to the Black Sea was thrown back beyond the Dnieper.

“We affirm publicly,” said the participants in the rally in Kyiv dedicated to the liberation of the city, “the will and happiness of Ukraine are in unshakable alliance with the Russian people and all Soviet brother peoples. We publicly swear to strengthen this sacred and beneficent union. And we bequeath our oath to our children, our descendants forever and ever” (“History of Kyiv”, vol. 2, Kyiv, 1962, p. 498).

Thanks to the liberation of a large part of the territory of Ukraine, its main industrial regions, the economic and military capabilities of the Soviet Union have increased. Prerequisites were created for the deployment of an offensive on the Right-Bank Ukraine.

Up to 2,500 soldiers were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for the successful crossing of the Dnieper and for their courage and heroism.

As a result of the breakthrough of the “indestructible” “Eastern Wall”, the offensive strategy of Nazi Germany collapsed. German troops, for the first time during the war, switched to strategic defense. Now the Red Army dictated the terms of the armed struggle.

During the four months of the offensive, from July to November 1943, Soviet troops liberated a huge territory – over 350 thousand square kilometers. The expulsion of the enemy from Belarus began, millions of Soviet people were rescued from fascist captivity.

The heavy defeat of Nazi Germany on the Soviet-German front weakened its rear. Industry worked with great tension, there was a shortage of human reserves.

The crisis within the fascist bloc aggravated: Italy was withdrawn from the war, the situation in Romania, Hungary, Finland became more complicated, where the desire to withdraw from the war noticeably increased. In the countries enslaved by the Nazis, national fronts for the fight against fascism were created. Partisan detachments and formations were transformed into national liberation armies. The complete expulsion of the invaders from Soviet soil and the liberation of Europe from fascism became inevitable.
