Why is the Warrior OG Blade considered one of the best lacrosse heads ever made. How did its re-release impact the lacrosse community. What makes the OG Blade’s design and performance stand out in face-off situations. Why do players value its durability and dominance on the field.
The Resurgence of a Lacrosse Legend: Warrior OG Blade
The lacrosse world was set ablaze when Warrior re-released the iconic OG Blade head. This legendary piece of equipment, once thought to be lost to time, has made a triumphant return to the delight of face-off specialists and lacrosse enthusiasts alike. Let’s dive into what makes the Warrior OG Blade so special and why its comeback has caused such a stir in the lacrosse community.
Unmatched Design: The Secret Behind OG Blade’s Success
At the heart of the OG Blade’s legendary status lies its innovative design. Warrior has stayed true to the original specifications, ensuring that this re-released version maintains the same level of perfection that made it famous. The super-flared face, a hallmark of the OG Blade, gives face-off specialists a significant advantage at the X.
Key Design Features:
- Super-flared face for improved ball control
- Optimized plastic composition for ideal flexibility and strength
- Precise weight distribution for enhanced maneuverability
How does the OG Blade’s design translate to on-field performance? The unique shape and structure allow players to “vacuum” the ball out of their opponent’s stick with incredible efficiency. This ability to gain possession quickly and consistently is what sets the OG Blade apart from other face-off heads.
Performance That Lives Up to the Hype
The OG Blade’s performance is not just a matter of nostalgia or marketing hype. Its resurrection has proven that the legends surrounding this head are grounded in reality. Face-off specialists who have had the opportunity to use the re-released OG Blade report the same level of excellence that made the original version so coveted.
Performance Highlights:
- Exceptional ball control at the X
- Improved win percentage in face-offs
- Versatility in various face-off techniques
- Consistent performance across different field conditions
Can a single piece of equipment really make such a difference in face-offs? In the case of the OG Blade, the answer is a resounding yes. Its unique design allows players to execute a wide range of face-off techniques with greater precision and success rate, giving them a significant advantage over their opponents.
Durability: Built to Withstand the Rigors of Face-Offs
One of the most impressive aspects of the OG Blade is its durability. Face-off heads are subjected to intense forces and stress during play, often leading to frequent replacements. However, the OG Blade has earned a reputation for its ability to withstand these pressures better than most other heads on the market.
While no lacrosse head is indestructible, the OG Blade’s durability is a testament to its quality construction and materials. Even when subjected to warping, players have found that simple maintenance techniques, such as stuffing a softball into the head, can restore it to near-normal condition.
Durability Benefits:
- Longer lifespan compared to many other face-off heads
- Reduced need for frequent replacements
- Ability to maintain performance even after extended use
- Cost-effective option for serious players
How does the OG Blade’s durability impact a player’s game? By maintaining its shape and performance characteristics over time, players can develop a consistent feel and technique with their head. This consistency can lead to improved performance and confidence on the field.
Domination at the X: The OG Blade’s Competitive Edge
When it comes to face-offs, the OG Blade is renowned for its ability to dominate the opposition. Its unique design and performance characteristics give players a significant advantage in virtually any face-off situation. This level of control and consistency at the X can be game-changing, allowing teams to gain crucial possessions throughout a match.
Factors Contributing to OG Blade’s Dominance:
- Superior ball control upon initial clamp
- Improved ability to direct the ball to teammates
- Enhanced grip for quick transitions from face-off to offense
- Versatility in adapting to different opponent strategies
What makes the OG Blade so effective in face-off situations? Its design allows for a more aggressive and controlled clamp on the ball, giving the user a split-second advantage that can make all the difference. Additionally, the head’s shape facilitates quicker transitions from winning the face-off to initiating offensive plays, creating fast-break opportunities for the team.
The Impact of OG Blade’s Re-release on the Lacrosse Community
The re-release of the OG Blade sent shockwaves through the lacrosse community. Long-time players who remembered the original version were thrilled at the chance to once again wield this legendary head. Younger players, who had only heard stories of the OG Blade’s prowess, were eager to experience it firsthand.
This excitement led to a frenzy of demand, with the limited initial release selling out quickly. The scarcity of the re-released OG Blade only added to its mystique, further cementing its status as a coveted piece of lacrosse equipment.
Community Response:
- Overwhelming excitement from veteran players
- Curiosity and anticipation from younger generations
- Increased interest in face-off techniques and strategy
- Renewed discussions about equipment innovation in lacrosse
How has the OG Blade’s return influenced the lacrosse equipment market? Its re-release has sparked conversations about the importance of innovation in lacrosse gear and the potential for reviving other classic designs. It has also set a new benchmark for face-off head performance, challenging other manufacturers to step up their game.
Limitations and Future Possibilities for the OG Blade
Despite its overwhelming success and popularity, the OG Blade does have a few limitations. The primary issues revolve around its limited availability and specifications that may not meet all players’ needs.
Current Limitations:
- Limited production runs leading to scarcity
- Only available in high school specifications
- Potential regulatory issues for use in certain leagues
These limitations have led to discussions about the future of the OG Blade. Many players and fans are calling for Warrior to consider a more permanent re-introduction of the head, potentially with variations to meet different regulatory requirements.
Is there a possibility of seeing an “OG Blade X” for college-level play? While Warrior hasn’t made any official announcements, the overwhelming popularity of the re-released OG Blade suggests that exploring such options could be beneficial for both the company and the lacrosse community.
The Legacy of the Warrior OG Blade in Lacrosse History
The Warrior OG Blade has secured its place in lacrosse history as one of the most influential and beloved pieces of equipment ever created. Its impact on face-off strategy and player performance has been significant, shaping the way the game is played at the X.
Even as new technologies and designs emerge in the world of lacrosse equipment, the OG Blade remains a benchmark against which other face-off heads are measured. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the quality of its design and the real-world results it delivers on the field.
OG Blade’s Historical Impact:
- Revolutionized face-off technique and strategy
- Set new standards for face-off head design
- Influenced the development of subsequent lacrosse equipment
- Created a lasting legacy in lacrosse culture
What does the OG Blade’s legacy mean for the future of lacrosse equipment? It serves as a reminder that sometimes, classic designs can outperform newer innovations. It also highlights the importance of listening to player feedback and preferences when developing new equipment.
As the sport of lacrosse continues to evolve, the Warrior OG Blade stands as a shining example of how a well-designed piece of equipment can become more than just a tool – it can become a legend. Whether you’re a face-off specialist looking to gain an edge or a lacrosse enthusiast interested in owning a piece of the sport’s history, the OG Blade remains an unparalleled choice that continues to captivate players and fans alike.
Why We Love The Warrior OG Blade
If you are a veteran in the sport of lacrosse, or even just starting out, you’ve most likely heard of the legendary OG Blade. Going down in the books as one of (if not THE) best Face-Off heads out there, the OG Blade used to be a thing of myth due to its cease of production years ago. But once Warrior re-released this awesome head last year legend and myth once again became facts and statistics. I wanted to share with you a few reasons why we here at Universal Lacrosse LOVE the OG Blade so much!
5. Brought Back To Life.
The re-release of the OG Blade cause a TORNADO of excitement in the lacrosse community! It’s not everyday that you get the chance to pick up one of the most ICONIC heads ever made. Even though there were only a few OG Blades up for grabs, the fact that it came back to life period speaks for itself.
The “Beast” himself rocking the OG Blade!
4. Design
The re-birth of the OG Blade caused a few questions at first regarding design and performance. Warrior stayed true to the original specs down to the plastic keeping this head at the same peak of perfection!
3. Performance
The legends of the OG Blade hold true with its resurrection. The ability to basically vacuum the ball out of your opponents stick at the X is something that you just have to see to believe. Warrior didn’t cut any corners here so you are still getting the same level of greatness as you would years ago.
2. Durability
With any face-off head you run the risk of breaking and/or warping from the forces used at the X. Sometimes we see a face-off specialist run through 4 heads every two months because they keep breaking. It happens. Heads break under that pressure. My point is that out of all the heads out there used for face-off the OG Blade could handle it best. Sure it would warp but that can be fixed by stuffing a softball in there and get it close to normal. The longevity of this head is what really makes it shine here.
1. DOMINATION
I know I might be cheating here since you can argue that this is the same as Performance, BUT when you have a head that can control the face-off as much as the OG Blade can you just have to talk about it twice. In practically any situation this head would destroy the opposition’s hopes and dream of winning the draw.
With all these positives I can only think of two drawbacks to the OG Blade. Limited Access and HS Specs. When you only release a few of something, everyone wants one. Hopefully Warrior takes advantage of this and brings this beauty back to life once again, bringing me to me next, and final, point. The OG Blade was only available in HS Specs. Meaning that any College play was out of luck if they wanted to add this head to there arsenal. If Warrior does in fact bring the OG Blade back to the tables, hopefully they consider releasing an OG Blade X as well. Just saying here.
Whether you have heard about the Blade or not, it will still forever go down as one of the BEST heads ever created.

Overview
Weapons are items used to attack enemies in Dungeon Quest. Weapons come in various rarities that are typically random. The possible rarities are common, uncommon, rare, epic and legendary. Weapons boost physical power and spell power, and they can be upgraded with gold to improve their stats.
Potential and Gold Calculator
Note: To view this calculator on Mobile, tap here.
This calculator can determine the potential power (spell power, physical power) of an item and the cost needed to upgrade it.
In order to find the potential gold cost, fill in the bottom 2 boxes. In order to find the potential power of the item, fill in all 3 boxes.
Weapon List
The damage listed in the physical/spell power boxes below shows the average stats their respective classes have. A warrior classed weapon with ~5 physical would mean it focuses on physical damage, intended for users who specialize in physical damage. If it were to say ~5 spell and the mage class, it would mean it focuses on spell power, intended for users who specialize in spell power/magic.
The “~” before the number means circa (approximately). For example, ~5 physical or spell power means its base average is around 5 physical or spell power. Apart from legendary weapons, the circa value takes common, uncommon, rare, and epic rarities into account, giving an average for all four rarities combined.
Cosmetics and enchants bought for a weapon are only visual and do not enhance gameplay.

90,000 Sword is the soul of a warrior. The first war blades | Military history with V. Sverzhin
Pharaoh holding a khopesh
Pharaoh holding a khopesh
The path through the millennia
In the peoples, whose names have come down to us from the depths of centuries, it was universally believed that individual freedom can only be defended by force of arms … It is not for nothing that the concepts of “warrior” and “free man” in many languages were denoted by the same word. Only slaves were deprived of the sacred right to own weapons.
At the same time, many traditions and customs related to weapons and literally worshiping them arose. The blade became the basis of the male cult, inextricably linked with the very concept of masculinity. Traces of the worship of edged weapons have remained everywhere to this day. It was viewed not as a tool for cruel rati, but as something dear, deeply revered. It is not for nothing that in different countries, when creating a noble “white” weapon, the blade was “drunk with blood.” It could also be the blood of the future owner of the weapon – to bind a person and smashing steel by kinship; and the blood of a captive enemy, so that the blade “thirsts” for it, like a man of daily food.
Warriors on the Assyrian bas-relief
Warriors on the Assyrian bas-relief
Weapons for our distant ancestors were not just a means of killing their own kind – it was a magical abode of a formidable spirit that brought together the forces of powerful elements. It was born from the earth (from there came both metals and coal to melt them), found itself in fire, tempered in water and air, and finally comes to life in the hands of man. The creation of a real blade was a kind of sacred rite.Even the very art of a gunsmith, according to legend, people were taught by the gods. Sometimes swords became a receptacle, even an embodiment of them. Worshiping a powerful patron spirit living in smashing metal was a means of communication between a person and higher forces in the warlike nomadic people of the Scythians and among the formidable Hittites. The use of weapons for their intended purpose is a manifestation of divine will. Over time, it began to be revered as a universal symbol of power. Whether it was a sword, club or spear – it directly indicated the high position of the owner. Thus, the warrior became an instrument of providence, and not at all a banal murderer. And the weapon is in his hands – a relative and faithful companion.
It is characteristic that, perhaps the first mass blade weapon specially made for battle – the Assyrian saparra , was a modified sickle – an attribute of the god of war and … agriculture Ninib. As the sickle cut the ears, so the saparra took human lives. This blade had the outer and partly the inner part sharpened. The Assyrian army, which successfully fought in Mesopotamia, Asia Minor and the Caucasus mountains, very clearly introduced the neighboring peoples to the power of their weapons.
Assyrian Saparra
Assyrian Saparra
Perhaps this weapon has an even more ancient, Sumerian origin, but nevertheless it received its real combat incarnation already in Assyria. From here, saparra began to spread throughout the surrounding countries. Among them was Egypt. Although still formidable fighting sickles were brought here not by the Assyrians themselves, but by the mysterious people who came “from the other side.” To this day, no one can say with certainty what kind of tribe they were. These impetuous conquerors went down in history under the name Hyksos – charioteers. They invaded the lands of the pharaohs and swept away the Egyptian army, showered them from afar with arrows from rushing chariots, and then hacked the retreating Saparra. For two centuries, the rule of the invaders was established in Egypt. No matter how disgusting it was to the Egyptians, the power of strangers, having thrown off the yoke, they entered the era of the New Kingdom with war chariots, bows and their own sickle swords – khopesh.

Heavy, about two kilograms in weight, about seventy centimeters long, a bronze blade for its time became a formidable weapon. They could operate both on foot and standing on a chariot. Such a blade cut a shield without much difficulty, but armor was not known in ancient Egypt for a long time.
In translation , khopesh meant “animal’s foot”. Its shape really resembled the hind leg of an antelope. Since bronze is not sharpened, the khopesh had a wedge-shaped cross-section and was an impressive hybrid of a sword and an ax. But at the same time, the alloy from which the blades were made included impurities of rare metals ferrosilicomanganese and ferrosicilium. These alloying elements increased the hardness of the relatively soft bronze. Of course, one can assume that such impurities are pure chance, but still it is reasonable to believe: the ancient metallurgists knew well what they were doing. And we still have a lot to learn about the technology of antiquity.
Khopesh was the most powerful and perfect weapon of its era. They could stab, although not very well, cut (as far as the weapons of that time were able to cut), and, of course, cut. Khopesh was expensive, required considerable physical strength and skill. This sword ax could be designed for both one-handed and two-handed grip. Such an innovation added power to the blow, and he swept away any obstacle in its path. Warriors who wielded such blades on the battlefield were considered the elite of the Egyptian army. And of course, the first of them was the living god of these lands – the Pharaoh.
The era of the New Kingdom was the peak of power for Egypt. At this time, in addition to their own troops, the pharaohs hired troops from other Mediterranean countries. Including from Hellas (present-day Greece).Of course, warriors from foreign lands arrived with their own weapons and their own manner of fighting, but the combat experience of powerful neighbors undoubtedly adopted and creatively interpreted. Thus, in the cradle of European civilization, its own version of the overseas sword appeared – kopecks .

A duel between a Greek hoplite and a Persian. Both are armed with mahaira.
Today in Greek this word means “to cut”. However, most likely, it came from the name of the weapon, and not vice versa. The shape of the blade now faintly resembled a sickle, rather it resembled a fish bent in a jump. But the essence remained the same – due to the far forward center of gravity – “fish belly”, the blade had excellent chopping qualities. In addition, it did not bounce or slip on impact. At the same time, in contrast to the khopesh, his descendant already had a distinctly pronounced edge; it was much more convenient and effective for them to deliver stabbing blows than the khopesh.
A close relative of the copes in ancient Hellas was mahaira .Translated from ancient Greek, this word meant “a means of combat”, in modern – simply “knife”. Often, an equal sign is put between khopesh and mahaira, but this is not entirely true. Mahaira is a more general concept, and we can say that kopes is a special case of mahaira. But it is believed that, on average, it is significantly less curved. By the way, it was probably the mahaira that was the very sword with which the Apostle Peter cut off the ear of the servant of the high priest. And if not with a sword, then it is possible that it was a fragment.
The fact is that along with the former bronze blades, their iron counterparts began to be used and widely used. The iron was loosened, folded, chopped into pieces, loosened and folded again. In the end, a pretty good piece was in the hands of the gunsmith. They were still very far from the perfection of today’s steels, and the mahaira, designed for a powerful chopping blow, often broke. But the blade fragments were also valuable. They could be melted down again, or, if a piece with a sharp point, for good luck, turned out to be long, a sickle-shaped dagger was made from it – shikku .
Canaanite Sikkah
Canaanite Sikkah
Such daggers were extremely widespread. They are found in Dacia (Romania), Bulgaria, Serbia. In Thrace, such a weapon had a slightly larger handle and a blade, and was called romphea. Sikka is best known in the lands of Judea. A fierce struggle against Roman rule flared up here. The fighters of the anti-Roman resistance with a knife, with which they exterminated the enemy, were called sikkarii. One of these implacable fighters against the Roman Empire was Shimon, who had the call sign “Stone”. In Greek – Peter.
In Rome itself, the copes, or as it was called “copid”, was also well known.Like much created by the Hellenic genius, it was adopted by the new conquerors of the world, but for a long time it did not enjoy much popularity. In the infantry ranks of the legions that conquered half the world, at that time the straight sword reigned – the gladius. The very place for the kopes was in the cavalry. The heavy slashing sword was perfect for a powerful overhead strike. That’s just bad luck, the Roman army for a long time had practically no combat cavalry of its own. Horsemen were used to liaise and cover the flanks, while for everything else, allied cavalry detachments were hired.
The situation changed when the Roman legions had to face the Iberians on the battlefield. These born horsemen, who lived on the Iberian Peninsula (now Spain), creatively modified the copy, providing it with a handle that ensures a reliable hold of the blade. Such a weapon, called in Rome “Iberian sword”, later (already in the 19th century) received the sonorous name “Falcata”, had no equal. The metal from which they were forged was superior in hardness, resilience and ability to keep sharpening both Greek and Roman samples of similar weapons.Falcats easily smashed the helmets and armor of the legionnaires, terrifying the Roman infantry. As was usually the case with the Romans, they immediately drew the right conclusions and adopted the Iberian sword for their cavalry.

In another part of the empire, which later received the name of Byzantium, the mahaira gradually degenerated into a large utility knife and lost its combat mission. For more than a thousand years, this once formidable weapon was used for completely domestic purposes, but suddenly an almost unprecedented thing happened – she was reborn like a phoenix from the ashes.
It all began with the creation of a corps of janissaries in the Ottoman Empire, which captured most of Byzantium. In these elite units, only the children of foreigners were taken. They were brought from the conquered lands, converted to Islam, brought up in the spirit of loyalty to the Sultan and taught military affairs. And yet, for a long time, the Janissaries were no match for the local Turkish nobility. The janissaries’ exits to the city often turned into fierce battles. To avoid bloodshed, they were forbidden to carry sabers on leave. For household needs and self-defense, the janissaries were left with knives – those same mahairs, similar to their proud ancestors, like geckos to dragons.
But if you could easily crumble greens into a salad with such knives, then they turned out to be too small for real self-defense. And the nondescript household knife began to grow, regaining its former strength and glory. The Janissaries ordered more and more blades for themselves. The experience gave remarkable results. Very soon, the new weapon “ yatagan ” began to operate actively on the battlefields in no way inferior to the saber, saber and sword.

And this is not the only descendant of the ancient Assyrian weapon that has survived the millennia. In those days, when Macedonia, lost in the mountains, suddenly began to turn into an empire, mahaira and kopis began a reverse movement “to their historical homeland,” in Mesopotamia. The army of Basileus Alexander swiftly captured Egypt, invaded the lands of Persia and defeated the army of Tsar Darius III there. The historical Mesopotamia, including the former Assyrian lands, came under the rule of Alexander the Great. India was the next target of attack. During the Battle of Hydaspe, the warriors of the invincible Macedonian were attacked by war elephants. However, this could not crush the fighting spirit of the brave men of Alexander. Rushing into the fray, they chopped the trunks of elephants with their kopes and soon turned the huge formidable animals into a panicky flight.
In fact, Alexander’s raid in India opened this distant country, full of wonders and wonders to Europe. As for weapons, in many respects, it was thanks to Indian craftsmen that Europeans got acquainted with high-quality iron. But the Macedonians also left the memory of themselves in distant lands. First of all, it was the Greek art of hand-to-hand combat – pankration and … already familiar to us kopes. India, the birthplace of bulat steel and one of the most developed metallurgical powers of that time, has always been famous for its reverent attitude towards weapons. And of course, not a single effective means of warfare was left without attention here. Kopes not only permanently registered in the Indian arsenal, he became the national weapon of the proud and warlike people of the Gurkha, turning here into the most powerful cutting weapon kukri .

With its undoubted excellent fighting qualities, the kukri also has a deep symbolic fullness. Each element of this weapon is dedicated to the Hindu gods, which, like thousands of years ago, returns this perfect weapon to the sphere of magical, sacred objects.Today, the Gurkha units are part of the British Crown Guard, their kukris are included in the set of weapons and are always respected and in demand among fans of knives. 10 myths about medieval battles, in which many believe. But in vain
1.The sword can cut the pike
Two-handed sword with a counterguard, Italy, Venice, 1570. Image: The Met Collection
Take a look at this magnificent example of 16th century weaponry. This is Zweichender (two-handed) – a long sword used by the Landsknechts, German mercenaries. Those who were armed with it were called doppelsoldners, or “double soldiers” – that is, warriors with a double salary.
In general, all Europeans had two-handed swords: claymores for the Scots, espadons for the Swiss and French, greatwords for the British, and so on.But Zweichender is the most impressive of them all. It has a wide guard to deflect attacks and protect the swordsman’s hand, and a curved counter guard to parry blows.
The length of this sword, together with the handle, could reach two meters, but usually it was 1.4–1.8 meters.
There is a very popular myth on the Internet about why such a colossus was used. Allegedly, the Landsknechts fought in formation, gathering in the so-called battle and putting long sharp peaks in front of them.If in a fierce battle two enemy formations converged, the doppelsoldners entered the battle.
Specially trained brave men walked ahead of their comrades, pushing aside and cutting off the peaks of enemies with the Zweichenders on the move. This made it possible to break through the enemy system, mix the order and kill everyone. The owners of the Zweichenders, called masters of the long sword, risked the most, which is why they enjoyed special respect.
Duel with two-handed swords, fencing book of Hans Medel von Salzburg, 15th century. Image: Public Domain
Sounds cool, but it’s not true.It is not always possible to cut a lance and an ax with a swing, let alone a sword, and in close combat, and even more so. 90,097 reenactors and fencers tried to do this. And they failed.
And the myth appeared because of the book “Arms” by the Russian historian of the 19th century Pavel von Winkler. He clearly imagined two-handed fighting a little bit wrong.
By the way, it is wrong to say that only a real hero can lift a Zweichender: on average, these colossus weighed only 2-3.5 kilograms. The weight of individual copies of reached a maximum of 6.6 kilograms – this is how the legendary Frisian hero Pierre Gerlofs Donia allegedly owned. But such a weapon was never used in battle, because it was extremely inconvenient, and served only for parades and ceremonies.
2. Chivalry disappeared when firearms were invented
Battle of San Romano, painting by Paolo Uccello, 1435-1460. Image: Public Domain
For a long time, knights were practically invincible warriors.Imagine: you are standing and squeezing a weapon with sweaty palms, and a huge horse in armor is galloping at you. On it sits a big man in armor and with a spear, who was taught to kill from childhood. It is unlikely that a simple urban militia or a peasant would have been able to oppose him with something.
Not surprisingly, until the 15th century, heavy cavalry was the dominant force on the battlefield. Therefore, in the Middle Ages, the strength of an army was measured not by the number of soldiers, but by “spears”.
One spear is a knight on horseback, assigned to him squires, pages, bodyguards, archers, servants and other rabble, which no one even thought of counting. They made sure that the noble gentleman felt good, did not experience problems with equipment, ate on time and did not fall from his horse.
However, at some point, the knights lost their effectiveness, became too expensive and, as a result, were not needed.
There are several opinions as to why chivalry had come to naught by the 15th century. The most popular is because firearms and arquebus have spread throughout Europe. When gunpowder was brought from China, the knights immediately went out of fashion, something like that.
Another explanation is the marksmanship of the English archers. These guys fired at the speed of machine guns, in seconds they turned the French knights and their horses into hedgehogs, sticking arrows at them for a sweet soul. The armored horsemen realized their uselessness, became upset and disappeared as a class.
The third option is the appearance of crossbows. They recharge more slowly than bows, but they hit much more powerful. So that one successful shot from this thing will pierce 10 knights on horses, placed in a row, and ricochet off the helmet from the eleventh.
However, none of these options are relevant to reality. The firearm was not particularly dangerous for these warriors, because their cuirasses protected well from arquebus bullets, no worse than modern body armor.
The knights also did not stand on ceremony with archers and exterminated 90,097 in droves – for example, at the Battle of Path during the Hundred Years War. And crossbows were not a panacea for armored cavalry. Such weapons began to spread across Europe in the XI century, which did not prevent the soldiers in armor from feeling quite good for another four centuries.
The end of the knights was put by the development of combat combat . Swiss pikemen, German landsknechts, and then Spanish infantrymen – these guys have deprived the knights of the status of invincible warriors. To break through on horses a formation bristling with long peaks is a task, in principle, doable.
But only if all the riders under your command are suicides.
So those wishing to ride with a saber bald on the pikemen’s battles gradually ended, and the estate knighthood gave way to professional mercenary troops on the battlefield. They were much more disciplined, because they could not boast of their noble birth.
3. The lighter the sword, the better
A duel with two-handed swords in the fencing book of Hans Talhoffer, 1467. Image: Public Domain
We have already debunked the myth that medieval weapons were very heavy – supposedly swords and hammers weighed tens of kilograms and could only be wielded by real strongmen, which cannot be found in our time.
But in modern culture there is also the opposite delusion in meaning: the best weapon is the one that weighs little.Obviously, this myth came from fantasy, the authors of which love to supply their heroes with weightless blades, which, of course, were forged by elves from magic metal. For example, mithril or adamantium.
A typical fantasy sword as light as a feather, yet incredibly sharp. Even a person who has never practiced fencing (in especially neglected cases – a hobbit about a meter tall), waving this weapon, can easily amputate extra limbs on the pressing orcs.
But in reality, a weightless sword will not be very useful.
Light metal will work for spearheads or arrows, but no one will forge blades from it. The fact is that a blow or thrust with such a weapon will be much weaker than with a normal sword weighing 1.5-2 kilograms. The mass of 90,097 weapons should not be too large, but the blade should not be too light, otherwise it will not create sufficient momentum and inertia.
Therefore, it is absolutely wrong to say that swords, samurai katanas and Spanish rapiers should be lighter than fluff in order to flutter in skillful hands.
4. Helmet is optional
Warriors of the north do not wear helmets. Still from the series “Game of Thrones”
Watch any “historical” or fantasy film or a series with large-scale battle scenes. Surely all the heroes in it will go into battle in more or less decent armor, but at the same time with bare heads. And if there are helmets, then only the extras running in the background – the main characters will do without them.
If, according to the scenario, it is too early to die, then at least naked in the attack, all the arrows will fly by.
From the point of view of cinematography, it is clear why Jon Snow and Ragnar Lothbrok do not wear protectors on their heads: to make it easier for the viewer to recognize their faces in general shots.
But in a real medieval battle, they would not have been lucky: an arrow that accidentally flew into the head at the end or a fragment of a spear stuck under the ear will not add good health to anyone. And the helmets were designed to protect against such troubles.
Most of the medieval warriors could go to war even without chain mail, in only one quilt, but they did not forget helmets.Head injuries were one of the main causes of 90,097 deaths on the battlefield. So there was nothing to do without a special hat in battle.
5. The shield can also be forgotten at home
Vikings wear shields, Bishop Hemund does not. A still from the TV series “Vikings”.
Another optional, from the point of view of Hollywood filmmakers, tool on the battlefield is the shield. Characters in feature films rarely use them, preferring to fight only with swords. Obviously, the situation here is similar with helmets: in the frame, shields take up quite a lot of space and hide the movements of the actors, so they don’t look very good.
In fact, they were almost the main means of protection of most of the soldiers of the Middle Ages – both noble knights and ordinary infantry.
It was with a shield, not a blade, that the blows of enemy weapons were reflected. No, of course, you can do this with a sword too. But just taking a blow on him, as shown in the movies, you risk damaging the weapon. It will be covered with notches, and its fighting qualities will be significantly reduced. And the sword is a very expensive thing, and it should be protected.
The expression “cross swords” is relatively new, in the Middle Ages they did not say that.To beat your blade into the blade of the enemy is just a waste of risking expensive weapons.
The shield was a consumable item that everyone could afford. A bundle of it and weapons is much more effective than just one sword, ax or spear in two hands. Shields were refused only by the owners of the highest quality plate armor, and even then not always.
6. A sword-dagger broke the blades
This interesting dagger of the 15th century is called a dentair, or a sword (eng.swordbreaker). It was he, as well as the small round buckler shield, who sent traditional full-size shields to the dustbin of history.
The fencers took it in the left hand and parried the opponent’s blows with it. Periodically, the opponent’s sword fell into the recesses in the blade, and then the enemy briefly lost control of his weapon, becoming defenseless.
And at that moment it was possible to hit him with one poke. Great, isn’t it?
Because of the name of the dagger, many believe that with its help captured swords were broken, depriving them of the edge. That’s just a myth .
Maybe a very strong person will be able to break the weapon if you firmly fix its handle in a vice. Especially when the sword is made of low-quality metal: good long blades bend well, but just as easily regain their shape.
But if the sword is held in hand, it will simply break out of it, without being injured. And breaking weapons simply did not make much practical sense.
7. In the Middle Ages, everyone fought to the death
Captivity of John the Good at the Battle of Poitiers.Lithograph of 1789. Image: Public Domain
In most films and TV series, medieval knights, and even simple warriors, show very little mercy towards defeated enemies. If the enemy is disarmed or wounded, he is simply finished off without further hesitation. In the worst (for him) case, the unfortunate is taken prisoner, but only in order to torture, find out information and only then destroy.
But real medieval battles often ended not with mountains of corpses, but with crowds of prisoners.
The reason for this behavior is not enlightened humanism or Christian philanthropy. Just for a person taken hostage, you can get a ransom. If you grabbed some rich knight, all you had to do was to attach it with a war hammer on the helmet, but not hard, take off your armor and tie it up. And you are almost rich.
Especially large ransoms of were given for all sorts of kings, dukes and earls – for example, John II had to pay the English three million crowns in gold for the liberation. And this is just a crazy amount.
But not only nobles were taken prisoner, but also ordinary infantrymen – if they did not look completely ragged. For example, in the same Hundred Years War, only about a tenth of the prisoners of war had a noble origin, the rest were commoners.
They also bought their freedom from the winners – sometimes for this the average archer had to give his annual earnings. But it’s better than being hanged.
8. Archers and crossbowmen were considered cowards
Battle of Crécy, illustration from the 15th century Chronicle of Froissart.Image: Public Domain
One of the most popular myths among fantasy lovers is the belief that medieval warriors did not like shooters. Allegedly, their craft – to kill from a distance – was considered shameful.
Therefore, archers, and even more so crossbowmen with their infernal machines, were not even taken prisoner, but exterminated on the spot. And it’s good if without prior torture.
Even the church at the Second Lateran Cathedral in 1139 forbade the use of these types of weapons against Christians.True, did not seem to say anything about war hammers, boiling oil and stakes smeared with feces. And these are much less humane weapons of killing a neighbor.
However, in fact, the opinion about the reckoning of archers and crossbowmen to the caste of outcasts is another myth. He is loved to be mentioned in fantasy. For example, in A Song of Ice and Fire by George Martin, the noble Jaime Lannister despised the owners of small arms.
Battle of archers with riders in armor, miniature from the Bellum Gallicum manuscript.Image: British Library
In fact, crossbowmen and archers were one of the most important forces of the medieval army – and they were highly regarded. Noble knights did not hesitate to use their services.
For example, one of the highest military posts in France in the XII-XVI centuries was the Grand Master of Crossbowmen, who was approved by Louis IX. He was a man of high birth , who also commanded archers, gunners, sappers and siege equipment.
Sometimes the shooters enjoyed special honors – of which they recruited the personal protection of the monarch. For example, Richard II’s bodyguards were 24 hand-picked archers from Cheshire.
It is unlikely that all these guys would be appointed to such positions if their methods of warfare were considered unworthy.
9. The owners of the flambergs were also not very fond of
Two-handed sword with a “flamberg” -type blade, 1550 Image: The Cleveland Museum of Art
By the way, there is another similar myth – that the owners of flambergs were not taken prisoner either , swords with a wavy blade. These weapons inflicted terrible wounds, and their owners were allegedly so hated that they killed on the spot. However, this is also not true: these fighters were killed no more often than the others.
Just flamberg got a special distribution already in the 16th century during the religious wars between Protestants and Catholics. And they were attended by the Swiss pikemen and German landsknechts who hated each other. And these guys did not take prisoners, even if he was armed with a flamberg, even a penknife, at least one toothpick.
10. The battle scythe is no different from the usual
The battle scythe. Fragment of the painting “Morning of Sedzhmoor” by Edgar Bundy, 1905.Image: Public Domain
Hearing the “scythe”, most of us will imagine a simple agricultural tool used to kill people.
To an ignorant person, it seems a formidable tool: it is not for nothing that Death itself is traditionally armed with it. Various video game characters like Bayonetta and Dante also fight with gardening tools, imitating the Grim Reaper.
However, in reality, this weapon does not look at all what you imagine.
Battle scythes did exist and were especially popular with peasants who could not afford better equipment. They were used by 90,097 Swiss infantrymen who fought against the Austrian knights in the XIV century, German commoners during the Great Peasant War of 1524-1525 and many others.
But this contraption was actually hard to confuse with an ordinary agricultural tool. Before the battle, it was reforged: the blade was placed vertically so that it could be cut, chopped and stabbed.
The weapon proved to be especially good against cavalry: it helped to injure horses, staying at a respectful distance from the sword-swinging knight. The battle scythe was used as a kind of budget halberd or guisarma.
An ordinary cast iron with a blade located horizontally instead of vertically has very, very limited use in combat. In principle, if necessary, it was possible to fight with it, but only if there was no normal weapon at hand.
The famous swordsman of the XVI century Paul Hector Mayer even made a guide how to swing a simple scythe and a hand sickle correctly. The latter, with the proper skill, will generally not be worse than a dagger.

Important: We do not participate in sparring, for the sake of sparring – because for us, in the first place is the test of psychological readiness and endurance, in the second place is the analysis of our condition, and in the third place is the result.
With this approach, even a seemingly lost sparring is a winning one from our point of view, because everywhere there are restrictions, but if a person does not lie on the floor and works actively, this does not mean that his opponent WIN, but he lost, it means that he passed the test.
