How do college prep summer camps work. What are the benefits of attending a college prep camp. Who are these camps designed for. What is the typical cost of a college prep summer program. Are there alternatives for students who cannot afford expensive camps.
The Rise of College Prep Summer Camps
In recent years, a new trend has emerged in the realm of summer camps: intensive college preparation programs for high school students. These camps offer a unique blend of academic rigor and college application guidance, catering to ambitious teenagers looking to gain an edge in the competitive world of college admissions.
Unlike traditional summer camps that focus on outdoor activities, sports, or arts and crafts, college prep camps are designed to help students boost their SAT scores, craft compelling college essays, and navigate the complex admissions process. But what exactly do these programs entail, and are they worth the investment?
What to Expect at a College Prep Camp
College prep camps typically offer a structured environment where students can focus intensively on various aspects of the college application process. Here’s what participants can generally expect:
- SAT/ACT test preparation
- College essay writing workshops
- Guidance on navigating the admissions process
- Campus tours and field trips
- One-on-one mentoring with experienced counselors
- Opportunities to experience campus life (for residential programs)
Nermin Fraser, director of admissions at Education Unlimited, emphasizes the value of these programs: “Our goal is to give them tools for success, and access to high-level instruction and materials that they may not otherwise have access to.”
The Intensive Nature of College Prep Camps
These camps are not for the faint of heart. They often involve long days of focused work and study. Christopher Rim, who runs Command Education’s college-prep summer programs, describes their camps as intense: “We have them from 10 to 5. They submit their essay before they go to sleep. It’s looked at at night, and in the morning they get it back and start on it again.”
While this level of intensity might seem daunting, many students find it beneficial. The structured environment and peer support can help motivate students to tackle challenging tasks they might otherwise procrastinate on during the school year.
Are College Prep Camps Right for Every Student?
Despite their potential benefits, college prep camps may not be suitable for all students. Administrators often emphasize that these programs are best suited for academically motivated students with strong grades. Fraser notes, “Kids should have an A or B average and be academically motivated.”
However, this doesn’t mean that only top-performing students can benefit. Fraser adds, “Because we work in small groups with personalized attention, we are able to help kids make incremental growth from wherever they are starting.”
The Cost Factor: Investing in College Prep
One of the most significant considerations when it comes to college prep camps is the cost. These programs often come with hefty price tags, reflecting the intensive nature of the instruction and the resources provided.
- Education Unlimited’s camps range from around $3,000 for a 7-day program to $8,000 for a 21-day version.
- Command Education’s weeklong camp costs $20,000, including pre- and post-camp counseling.
While many camps offer discounts or scholarships for qualified students in need, the high costs raise concerns about equity in college admissions preparation.
The Equity Debate: Do College Prep Camps Widen the Achievement Gap?
The high cost of many college prep camps has sparked debate about their role in perpetuating educational inequalities. Rick Mayfield, director of learning and achievement at the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, expresses concern: “A low-income family would not consider something like this, even at a discounted rate.”
This disparity in access to intensive college preparation resources could potentially give wealthier students an additional advantage in the already competitive college admissions process. However, it’s important to note that many colleges are aware of this issue and take steps to level the playing field.
How Colleges Address the Equity Issue
Colleges often employ strategies to ensure diversity and equal opportunity in their admissions processes:
- Setting aside places for qualified students in need
- Considering applicants’ backgrounds and available resources
- Offering need-blind admissions policies
- Providing generous financial aid packages
While these measures don’t entirely negate the advantage that expensive prep programs might provide, they do aim to create more equitable outcomes in college admissions.
Alternatives to Expensive College Prep Camps
For students who cannot afford expensive college prep camps, there are alternatives available. Many high schools and communities offer resources to help students navigate the college application process:
- School-based college counseling services
- Free or low-cost SAT/ACT prep classes
- Online resources and forums for college application advice
- Community-based mentorship programs
- Public library workshops on essay writing and college applications
Mayfield emphasizes the importance of these alternatives: “What we have tried to create in schools are resources that kids and families can tap into to help them with the process that do not cost money. There are adults that can show how to go about the application process, help with letter writing, and applying for scholarship funding.”
The Long-Term Benefits of College Prep Programs
While the immediate goal of college prep camps is to improve students’ chances of admission to their preferred colleges, these programs often provide benefits that extend beyond the application process.
Skills Development
Participants in college prep camps often develop valuable skills that serve them well throughout their academic careers and beyond:
- Time management
- Critical thinking
- Writing proficiency
- Self-advocacy
- Goal-setting
Reduced Stress During Senior Year
By completing significant portions of their college applications during the summer, students can alleviate some of the pressure they might otherwise face during their senior year. This can allow them to focus more on their academic performance and extracurricular activities, potentially improving their overall candidacy for college admission.
Exposure to College Life
For programs hosted on college campuses, students gain valuable exposure to college life. This experience can help them make more informed decisions about their college choices and better prepare for the transition to higher education.
The Future of College Prep: Trends and Predictions
As the college admissions landscape continues to evolve, so too will the nature of college prep programs. Several trends are likely to shape the future of these camps:
Increased Focus on Holistic Admissions
With many colleges placing greater emphasis on holistic admissions processes, college prep camps may expand their focus beyond test scores and essays to include personal development, leadership skills, and community engagement.
Integration of Technology
As technology continues to play a larger role in education, college prep camps may incorporate more digital tools and platforms into their programs. This could include virtual reality campus tours, AI-powered essay feedback, or interactive online learning modules.
Emphasis on Career Exploration
Given the growing importance of career readiness, future college prep camps might include more elements of career exploration and professional development, helping students align their college choices with their long-term career goals.
Accessibility and Affordability Initiatives
In response to concerns about equity, there may be a push towards more affordable and accessible college prep options. This could include the expansion of online programs, increased scholarship opportunities, or partnerships between private camps and public school systems.
Making the Decision: Is a College Prep Camp Right for You?
Deciding whether to attend a college prep camp requires careful consideration of several factors:
- Academic goals and current performance
- Financial resources and available alternatives
- Time commitment and willingness to engage in intensive study
- Specific areas of the college application process needing improvement
- Personal learning style and preferences
Ultimately, the decision should be based on an individual assessment of a student’s needs, resources, and goals. While college prep camps can offer valuable support and guidance, they are not the only path to a successful college application.
Questions to Consider
Before committing to a college prep camp, students and parents should ask themselves:
- Can we afford the program, or are there scholarships available?
- What specific outcomes do we hope to achieve from the camp?
- How does the program’s curriculum align with our goals?
- Are there comparable resources available through our school or community?
- Is the student prepared for the intensity of the program?
By carefully considering these factors, families can make an informed decision about whether a college prep camp is the right choice for their situation.
For some high-schoolers, summer camp is for college prep

Some summer camps are for unwinding, getting outdoors, playing sports or music, or doing crafts. And then there are those that offer kids — most of them heading into junior or senior year of high school — intensive study sessions focused on upping SAT scores, working on college applications and essays, getting help navigating the admissions process and, in some cases, experiencing a taste of college life.
“Our goal is to give them tools for success, and access to high-level instruction and materials that they may not otherwise have access to,” says Nermin Fraser, director of admissions at the Berkeley, California-based Education Unlimited.
The organization runs college admission prep camps on the campuses of the University of California at Berkeley, UCLA, Yale and Georgetown. Kids stay in dorms and eat in the campus cafeteria.
The camps are a lot of work (sometimes accompanied by a little play), and aren’t for everyone, administrators say.
Kids who are struggling academically might not be a good fit.
“Kids should have an A or B average and be academically motivated. The nice thing about it is that there are no grades. Some kids work super hard and seek out extra work. Other kids may not be there yet in terms of their mindset. They can benefit from the process in either case,” says Fraser, a former high school principal.
“Because we work in small groups with personalized attention, we are able to help kids make incremental growth from wherever they are starting,” she says.
Most students in the program are rising juniors, getting ready to take SAT and ACT exams. Rising seniors tend to focus on college applications and essays.
While the focus is on academics, Fraser says campers also go on field trips and tours of local college campuses.
Command Education runs college-prep summer programs in New York and Los Angeles. They cater mainly to kids entering senior year.
“A lot of students tend to procrastinate during the school year, when there isn’t a lot of time to focus on college essays and applications anyway,” says Christopher Rim, who runs the program.
“We structure the camp so that they’re working independently. But it’s easier to focus on working on the essay because they are surrounded by other kids who are working, too. We have them from 10 to 5. They submit their essay before they go to sleep. It’s looked at at night, and in the morning they get it back and start on it again,” Rim says.
“It’s an intense camp, and is really for students ready to put in the hard work,” he says.
If that sounds like a grueling way to spend part of the summer, Rim says the camps sell out quickly.
The hard work put in during the summer makes the college application process less stressful in the long run, he says, since students can enter senior year with application and essay completed.
The camps tend to have hefty price tags, though.
Education Unlimited’s summer camps range from around $3,000 for a 7-day college admissions camp to $8,000 for a 21-day version. Command Education’s offerings cost an eye-popping $20,000 for a weeklong camp, including counseling before and after camp to help navigate the college admissions process.
Many camps offer discounts or, in some cases, full scholarships for qualified students in need.
Nevertheless, for-profit college-prep camps give wealthier kids a leg up, says Rick Mayfield, director of learning and achievement at the San Luis Coastal Unified School District in San Luis Obispo, California.
“A low-income family would not consider something like this, even at a discounted rate,” he says.
He said high schools must try hard to provide such support themselves to students.
“What we have tried to create in schools are resources that kids and families can tap into to help them with the process that do not cost money,” he says. “There are adults that can show how to go about the application process, help with letter writing, and applying for scholarship funding. The playing field is anything but leveled and it is an uphill battle for those of lower socio-economic status.”
Rim notes that because wealthier communities tend to have better schools, the entire process is unfair from the start of a student’s education. But he says colleges tend to set aside a certain number of places for qualified students in need, as well as for international students, so wealthy U.S. applicants are competing with each other for slots, not with those with fewer resources or those from overseas.

Reflections on Quantum U, Our College Prep Summer Camp
For many students, the first day of college is a rude awakening. Everything your child has known is miles away—parents, childhood friends, the day-to-day routines of home—and suddenly your teen is in a sea of new faces without any familiar guidance and support structures.
It’s a parent’s worst nightmare. Many college students fall into bad habits and more than one-third drop out during their first year. For some, the struggle is academic. But for many, the biggest challenge is the social adjustment of living away from home and navigating life with new friends and classmates.
For Sammy, a 19-year-old freshman at Winona State University in Minnesota, the transition to college was smooth and easy thanks to her experience at Quantum U (SuperCamp’s college-age program, now Quantum Academy) the summer before.
Sammy recalls that when her parents first signed her up for the college prep summer camp, she felt apprehensive. She thought the 8-day academic program would be the worst possible way to start her summer, and she doubted that she needed any preparation for college.
The first day at Quantum U didn’t alleviate those concerns. Sammy was one of 30 Quantum U students at UCLA, and she couldn’t wait for the eight days to be over so she could go home and rejoin her club soccer team. “I felt stuck,” says Sammy. “So did a lot of the other campers.”
But on the second day, something shifted. Maybe it was the burgeoning camaraderie among the campers. Maybe it was the enthusiastic leadership from Marina and Craig, the camp facilitators. Maybe it was the insightful curriculum or the all-you-can-eat cafeteria food.
Whatever the case, Sammy dove in, ready to give the college prep summer camp a chance. She decided that she would make the most of the experience and see what she could get out of it.
To Sammy’s surprise and delight, the program was a blast.
Sammy had expected the program to be eight consecutive days of sitting in a chair listening to lectures. Instead, the material was presented in a dynamic, engaging way that incorporated games and activities. The Quantum U students also got to sightsee and explore the campus.
Even the curriculum was a surprise. While academic strategies were covered, the college prep camp also taught students critical communication skills, including how to structure an apology and how to listen to others and respect their differences.
Sammy found the communication skills particularly helpful in her first days at college. Others struggled to make friends and feel comfortable in their new environment. But Sammy jumped into conversation and made many new friends right away. “Quantum U was like going to college,” Sammy explains. “So I immediately felt comfortable and open at WSU.”
Sammy continues to use the skills she learned at Quantum U. She recalls, “Recently I got in a fight with one of my friends. I listened to her, and I didn’t say ‘I’m sorry’—I said ‘I apologize’—because sorry is overused and often not meant. ‘I apologize’ means more.”
As Sammy wraps up the last few weeks of her freshman year, she remains grateful for the Quantum U experiences and looks forward to taking her Quantum U skills into her sophomore year. “The things they teach you stick with you. It was definitely worth it.”

College Prep Camp Helps Teens Improve Communication Skills
Even with excellent test scores and high class rankings, many prospective college students still have a lot of work to do when it comes to college essays, resumes and interviews, according to two UT Dallas communication instructors.
Dr. Carie King (left) and Dr. Melissa Hernandez-Katz
That need for better student communication skills in the admissions process is why the two will hold a college preparation camp this summer.
“Students think it’s all about test scores, but it’s really not,” said Dr. Carie King, clinical professor of communication and associate director of rhetoric in the School of Arts and Humanities.
“We’re covering some of the most stressful parts of the college application process — the essay and the interview — while providing some other important information for students hoping to be accepted into their targeted universities,” said Dr. Melissa Hernandez-Katz, senior lecturer in communication in the School of Arts and Humanities.
Developed for rising high school juniors and seniors, the camp will be held the week of July 30.
While some research studies indicate that the college admissions process can be very stressful for high school students, Ingrid London BS’07, MS’16, director of freshman admissions, said UT Dallas tries to make the process as streamlined as possible.
“It can involve a lot of information and a number of deadlines, but our goal is to make the application process as smooth as possible for prospective UT Dallas students,” London said.
“We’re covering some of the most stressful parts of the college application process — the essay and the interview — while providing some other important information for students hoping to be accepted into their targeted universities.”
Dr. Melissa Hernandez-Katz, senior lecturer in communication in the School of Arts and Humanities
University admission requirements vary a great deal across the country. UT Dallas, for instance, does not require essays or interviews for admissions, but they may be required for scholarship applications. Other universities also may require interviews and essays for scholarships or admissions.
London said communication skills are important for prospective students and are considered in UT Dallas’ holistic application process.
In addition to essay and interview preparation, the summer camp will look at other factors that could influence admissions counselors, such as social media and life balance.
Hernandez-Katz said social communication use makes it more difficult for some students to switch to a more formal approach when necessary.
“Students text a lot, and they often become very relaxed in their texts. Sometimes that comes across in their emails so that when they’re emailing an admissions director, or a person in charge of awarding a scholarship, they can be too informal,” she said.
King said colleges want to know about student activities and motivations.
“They want to know how you’re going to be able to balance the challenges of the academic world with being healthy, taking care of yourself, socializing and creating lasting relationships — part of the whole college experience,” King said.
Hernandez-Katz and King will provide two three-hour sessions each day during the camp. Interested students or parents can register online.
90,000 Summer linguistic vacations in Yaroslavl. Provincial College held an international country camp “Edge of Freedom”
Since 1991, the Municipal Educational Institution “Provincial College” of the city of Yaroslavl annually holds an international country camp in summer and winter, which brings together winners of subject city Olympiads, participants in the Russian scientific conference of schoolchildren “Discovery”, as well as students interested in research activities and learning foreign languages.
Traditionally, the ProCola camp is a special thematic program for high school students in the city of Yaroslavl, which combines study sessions, trainings, business games, intellectual marathons, recreation, sports, meetings with interesting people, as well as events in a foreign language. Over the years, creative language laboratories were created here, where children had the opportunity not only to practice their knowledge of English in live communication with foreign guests, but in a short period of time to learn vocabulary and learn the basics of grammar of German, French and even Korean, Danish and Ancient Greek …
In July 2018, the sanatorium-preventorium “Sosnovy Bor” gathered young science and language lovers for a camp shift called “Faces of Freedom”.Within the framework of a given thematic program, educational and educational activities (intellect-game “Freedom of Mind”, trainings “Discovery”, strategic game “New State”) were held. By tradition, summer lessons and leisure activities in a foreign language were held, which are conducted by teachers of partner foreign schools that cooperate with the college. Among the invited speakers this year was Otto Lomb, a representative of the school. Johann Philip Reis (Friedberg, Hesse, Germany), who has already become a good friend of the college. During the week-long camp shift, he participated in discussions in English for each detachment on the topic “The Cultural and Philosophical Aspect of Freedom in the European Context.”
Also, with the aim of effective self-determination of a high school student, ensuring his successful educational, professional and social career, it was interesting and informative for future applicants to meet with the heads of Yaroslavl universities – with A.I. Rusakov, rector of YarSU, and M.V. Gruzdev, rector of Yaroslavl State Pedagogical University. And competitions in football and volleyball, tourist relay race and cultural events (theatrical performance “Tale after Tale”, role-playing game “Law of the Jungle”, etc.) added even more vivid emotions and created a cheerful mood throughout the camp shift.

90,000 Summer language camps – teaching children abroad, studying for schoolchildren in the summer
Summer language camps provide both a good, active rest and an extensive educational program with travel and excursions. For teenagers, studying abroad in the summer is an exciting adventure, lots of entertainment, continuous communication in a foreign language, making friends from all over the world and, of course, getting to know the country in which they may have to study further. Education of schoolchildren abroad in the summer, when students go on vacation, is carried out on the basis of universities and colleges, using their entire infrastructure. Programs for younger children provide learning by playing, so that they themselves do not notice how they begin to communicate confidently in a foreign language.
It is possible to study English in some schools not only during the summer, but also during the autumn or winter holidays.

A language camp abroad is the right investment in your child’s future. English lessons for children in a camp abroad are the most effective way to overcome the language barrier and improve communication skills. After all, children are all the time surrounded by their peers from other countries and teachers, native speakers, so they easily learn directly in communication with them all the knowledge that was acquired during the lessons.A large number of excursions and activities will make such a vacation truly memorable!
Language camp programs
Our company offers a large selection of summer camps with the study of foreign languages, not only English, but also German in Germany and Switzerland, Spanish in Spain, French in France, Italian in Italy and even Chinese in China. Of course, we offer the largest selection of camps with the study of English, not only in countries where it is native to the population, such as the UK, USA, Ireland or Canada, but also in the former English colonies, where any local also speaks good English. language: for example, Malta or Cyprus.
All camps offer English lessons of at least 4 lessons per day and an interesting excursion and entertainment program. Many camps offer an intensive course of 6 lessons per day and sports (golf, swimming, tennis, horse riding, etc.) for an additional fee.
How to choose a linguistic camp abroad
First, we advise you to decide on the country where you would like to send your child to the camp. Do you want him to speak fluent English and at the same time have a rest at sea? This can be combined in Malta or Cyprus, because the holidays spent in these countries are both training and vacation at sea at the same time!
Great Britain is the most popular destination for language trips, because a child will be studying English in his homeland! When he returns from this fantastic trip, you will see how fluent his English has become and with what pleasure he began to attend English lessons at school, because now he is the best student in the class!
For older children who have already mastered Europe, we offer such interesting and promising countries for further education and careers as the USA and Canada with a wide variety of summer language camps in different cities, including on the coast.New countries, friends from different parts of the world, classes in a creative atmosphere and exciting daily excursions and activities are ideal conditions for learning English!
For those parents who are interested in their child knowing not only English, but also other languages, we recommend choosing a language camp abroad in the country where it is native for people living there: German camp in Germany, Spanish in Spain, etc. etc., because in our opinion this is the only way to speak a foreign language easily and without cramming!
Accommodation types
Most camps offer two main types of accommodation depending on age.For children under 14 years old, accommodation is possible only in the residence under the 24-hour supervision of experienced coordinators and supervisors who are fully responsible for the children. For teenagers over 14 years old, it is possible to live both in the residence and with a host family. When living with a family, the child participates in all camp activities, but at night he returns to the family, which also organizes food for him: breakfasts and dinners and sometimes lunch box for lunch. All families are carefully selected and checked by school officials and the police, so that parents can be absolutely sure of their child. We believe that one of the advantages of living with a family is additional everyday practice with native speakers. But when living in a residence, teenagers have more opportunity to communicate with peers from different countries.
