9001 4 http://www.upenn.edu/University of Pennsylvania is the first university in the United States and one of nine colonial colleges founded before the Declaration of Independence. UPenn was opened in 1740 and today is one of the most respected universities in America. Included in the Ivy League. It is believed that its name comes from a tradition established at UPenn back in 1873. Then the first graduation of the university planted ivy on the campus. Since then, Ivy Day has been adopted by other universities in the country, the best of which later merged into the Ivy League.
This institution has pioneered many areas of US higher education. Here, for the first time in America, students began to teach undergraduate and graduate programs. The first medical school was opened here, and then the first business school. And here, in 1896, the first student union appeared.
In 2017 U.S. News & World Report ranked the university as the 8th best university in the United States and included it among the most popular national universities. In the 2016/17 academic year, the QS World University Rankings and Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked the university 18th in the world, and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked 13th. Also in 2015, in the ARWU ranking, UPenn’s program in economics and business was ranked 8th in the world, and social sciences – 9th..
In a study of the world’s 500 largest companies, UPenn ranked 11th in the world and 2nd in the country (after Harvard) in terms of the number of CEOs and successful top managers among alumni. The university is famous for its wealthy graduates: 25 billionaires graduated from it, including businessman and philanthropist Warren Buffett, Indian billionaire Anil Ambani, “junk bond market founder” Michael Milken and US President Donald Trump. 13 heads of other states also studied here.
Penn has 12 colleges. Four of them offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees. The rest teach exclusively masters and graduate students. UPenn has several dozens of study programs, the most popular of which are medicine, design, business, law, engineering, as well as social and human sciences. UPenn includes the Wharton School, which is considered one of the strongest business schools in the world. In 2017, the university set its own record: only 9.2% of applicants who applied were enrolled in the first year of undergraduate studies.
The university is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The campus occupies over 110 hectares of land. It is located in the city center, and students who live outside of it can easily get to school by bus, metro or bicycle. In addition to colleges, there are learning centers, libraries, sports fields and halls, canteens and dormitories on campus.
UPenn is famous for both fundamental and not too serious scientific achievements. For example, university students and teachers discovered the tomb of Pharaoh Sebekhotep, who lived about 3800 years ago. Also, university scientists have developed a new method for the treatment of chronic renal failure. At the same time, studies were conducted at the university that identified the area of the brain responsible for cravings for tobacco. In another experiment, UPenn scientists proved that family conflicts lead to dental problems.
UPenn generally appreciates a sense of humor. In the fall, business school students parade through downtown Philadelphia without pants: marchers must wear only jackets, shirts, ties, and underpants. And on Hey Day, freshmen come to campus dressed up in a red shirt with a straw hat and leaning on a cane.
