World Cup Qualifying Campaign: Road to Qatar 2022
The USMNT’s journey to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar begins in earnest with the qualifying campaign. How does the qualification process work for the USMNT?
CONCACAF’s World Cup qualifying format involves an octagonal round-robin tournament featuring eight teams. The top three teams automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the fourth-placed team enters an inter-confederation playoff.
Key qualifying dates for the USMNT include:
- August 30 – September 7, 2021
- October 4-12, 2021
- November 8-16, 2021
- January 24 – February 1, 2022
- March 21-29, 2022
During these windows, the USMNT will face tough competition from regional rivals such as Mexico, Costa Rica, and Honduras. Can the USMNT secure their spot in the World Cup after missing out in 2018?
CONCACAF Nations League: A New Challenge for the USMNT
The CONCACAF Nations League represents a fresh challenge for the USMNT. What is this tournament and why is it important?
The Nations League is a biennial competition involving all 41 CONCACAF member associations. It serves multiple purposes:
- Providing competitive matches for smaller nations
- Offering additional silverware for top teams to compete for
- Helping determine seeding for future Gold Cup tournaments
The USMNT is set to participate in the Nations League semifinals from May 31 to June 15, 2021. They will face Honduras in the semifinal, with the winner advancing to face either Mexico or Costa Rica in the final. This tournament provides an excellent opportunity for the team to gain competitive experience and potentially secure a trophy.
CONCACAF Gold Cup 2021: Regional Supremacy at Stake
The CONCACAF Gold Cup remains a significant tournament for the USMNT. When and where will the 2021 edition take place?
The 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup is scheduled from July 2 to August 1, 2021. This biennial championship determines the continental champion of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. For the USMNT, it’s a chance to assert regional dominance and build momentum heading into World Cup qualifiers.
Key aspects of the Gold Cup include:
- 16 participating teams
- Group stage followed by knockout rounds
- Opportunity for younger players to gain international experience
- Potential matchups against rivals like Mexico and Canada
Success in the Gold Cup could provide a significant morale boost for the USMNT as they approach the crucial World Cup qualifying matches.
Friendly Matches: Building Team Chemistry and Tactics
Friendly matches play a crucial role in the USMNT’s preparation for competitive fixtures. How do these games benefit the team?
Friendlies offer several advantages:
- Experimentation with tactics and formations
- Opportunity to integrate new players into the squad
- Building team chemistry and understanding
- Testing the team against diverse opponents
The USMNT has several windows for potential friendly matches throughout 2021 and beyond. These include:
- March 22-30, 2021
- May 31 – June 15, 2021 (if not participating in Nations League)
- September 19-27, 2022
- Various dates in 2023 and 2024
While specific opponents for these friendlies are yet to be announced, they will likely include a mix of CONCACAF rivals and teams from other confederations to provide diverse challenges for the USMNT.
The Road to World Cup 2022: Challenges and Expectations
As the USMNT embarks on their journey to the 2022 World Cup, what challenges do they face? The team’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia was a significant setback, but it has also served as motivation for improvement.
Key factors in the USMNT’s World Cup campaign include:
- Integration of young talents like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Giovanni Reyna
- Tactical development under head coach Gregg Berhalter
- Managing player workload across club and international commitments
- Navigating the challenges of travel and varying conditions in CONCACAF
The expectations for the USMNT are high, with fans and pundits alike hoping for a strong showing in Qatar. Can the team live up to these expectations and make a deep run in the tournament?
Impact of COVID-19 on USMNT Schedule
The global COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted international soccer, including the USMNT’s schedule. How has the team adapted to these challenges?
The pandemic has led to several changes:
- Postponement of matches initially scheduled for 2020
- Rescheduling of World Cup qualifiers and other competitions
- Implementation of strict health and safety protocols for players and staff
- Potential for matches to be played without fans or with limited attendance
Despite these challenges, the USMNT has remained focused on their goals. The team and coaching staff have adapted to virtual meetings, individualized training programs, and new safety measures to ensure they remain competitive on the international stage.
Emerging Talents: The Future of USMNT
The current USMNT squad boasts an exciting array of young talents playing for top clubs around the world. Who are some of the key players to watch in the upcoming fixtures?
Notable emerging talents include:
- Christian Pulisic (Chelsea)
- Weston McKennie (Juventus)
- Giovanni Reyna (Borussia Dortmund)
- Sergino Dest (Barcelona)
- Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig)
These players, along with established veterans, form the core of a promising USMNT squad. Their development and performance in upcoming matches will be crucial to the team’s success in World Cup qualifiers and beyond.
The Role of MLS Players in the National Team
While many of the USMNT’s star players ply their trade in Europe, Major League Soccer (MLS) continues to be an important source of talent for the national team. How do MLS-based players fit into the USMNT setup?
MLS players contribute to the USMNT in several ways:
- Providing depth and competition for roster spots
- Offering familiarity with CONCACAF opponents and conditions
- Representing a pathway for young American talents to reach the national team
Head coach Gregg Berhalter, himself a former MLS coach, has shown a willingness to integrate MLS players into the national team setup. This blend of domestic and international-based players adds depth and diversity to the USMNT squad.
Tactical Evolution Under Gregg Berhalter
Since taking over as head coach in December 2018, Gregg Berhalter has been working to implement his tactical vision for the USMNT. What are the key elements of Berhalter’s approach?
Berhalter’s tactical philosophy includes:
- Possession-based play with an emphasis on building from the back
- Fluid positional interchanges in attack
- Aggressive pressing when out of possession
- Utilization of fullbacks in both defensive and attacking phases
As the team prepares for crucial matches, how will Berhalter’s tactics evolve to suit the strengths of the current player pool and overcome the challenges posed by CONCACAF opponents?
Fan Engagement: Supporting the USMNT
The passionate support of fans plays a crucial role in the USMNT’s journey. How can supporters stay connected with the team and show their support?
Fans can engage with the USMNT through various channels:
- Following official USMNT social media accounts for updates and behind-the-scenes content
- Joining supporter groups like the American Outlaws
- Attending matches when possible and adhering to safety guidelines
- Participating in virtual events and online discussions
The support of the fans can provide a significant boost to the team, especially during challenging away matches in World Cup qualifying. How will the potential absence or limited presence of fans due to COVID-19 restrictions impact the team’s performance?
Broadcast and Streaming Options
For fans unable to attend matches in person, watching broadcasts or streams is the next best option. Where can fans catch USMNT matches?
USMNT matches are typically broadcast on a combination of platforms:
- Network television (FOX, ESPN)
- Cable sports channels (FS1, ESPN2)
- Streaming services (Paramount+, Peacock)
- Spanish-language broadcasts (Univision, TUDN)
Fans should check their local listings or the official U.S. Soccer website for the most up-to-date broadcast information for each match.
Long-Term Vision: Beyond World Cup 2022
While the immediate focus is on qualifying for and performing well in the 2022 World Cup, U.S. Soccer has a long-term vision for the men’s national team. What are some of the key objectives beyond Qatar 2022?
Long-term goals for the USMNT include:
- Consistent qualification for World Cups
- Deeper runs in major tournaments
- Development of a distinctive playing style
- Nurturing the next generation of talents
- Hosting and performing well in the 2026 World Cup (co-hosted with Canada and Mexico)
The experiences gained and lessons learned from the current cycle will be crucial in shaping the future of the USMNT. How will the team build on their performances in the coming years to establish themselves as a force in international soccer?
Youth Development and Future Prospects
The success of the senior national team is closely tied to the strength of the youth development system. What steps is U.S. Soccer taking to ensure a steady pipeline of talent for the USMNT?
Key aspects of youth development include:
- Investment in coaching education
- Expansion of the Development Academy system
- Increased scouting and identification of young talents
- Participation in youth international tournaments
The performances of the U.S. U-17 and U-20 teams in recent years have been encouraging, with several players making the jump to the senior team. This bodes well for the future of the USMNT and suggests that the team’s upward trajectory could continue in the coming years.
As the USMNT embarks on this crucial period, fans and observers alike will be watching closely to see how the team progresses. With a blend of emerging talents, tactical evolution, and a clear long-term vision, the future looks bright for U.S. men’s soccer. The upcoming matches and tournaments will provide valuable insights into the team’s development and their prospects for success on the global stage.

When are the USMNT fixtures in 2020-21? U.
S. team match schedule
Here’s what you need to know about the USMNT schedule across the next year, including information on World Cup qualifiers and potential friendlies
The 2020-21 club season is well underway, and the U.S. Men’s National Team is gearing up for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers next March following the return of international football.
The team’s failure to qualify for the 2018 edition in Russia was seen as a major humiliation, but a few years on and with a clutch of fresher, more promising talents in the squad, the USMNT will be hoping to right a lot of their past wrongs.
Editors’ Picks
Qualification games for the 2022 World Cup won’t begin until next spring, but the USMNT camp will be keen to get preparations started as soon as possible, beginning with a few friendlies.
After seeing a majority of the 2020 schedule cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. is looking to line up some non-competitive games to boost up squad fitness this fall.
But due to the ongoing threat of Covid-19 – with the United States sporting the highest number of cases and deaths in the world – there are major complications to be overcome in terms of organizing friendlies, especially when American citizens are faced with international travel bans around the world.
USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter was optimistic of arranging friendlies at some point this fall, but no games have yet been confirmed.
“Right now we’ve been focused on trying to compete in the United States, trying to find a safe environment where we could play games,” he said according to Yahoo Sports.
“We’ll switch focus in November and try to play two high-level games in Europe. I’d expect a domestic-based side for October and a European-based side for November.”
The USMNT will kick off their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign in March 2021. Fixtures had originally been pencilled in for October or November 2020, but were pushed back in response to the pandemic.
That scheduling decision has also seen the USMNT’s Nations League semi-final with Honduras, which had been set to take place in March, rescheduled for June 2021.
The Nations League semi-final, final and third-place play-off game will take place in a centralized location in the United States. Mexico will play Costa Rica in the other semi-final.
The USMNT’s last game was a 1-0 friendly win over Costa Rica in February.

American Outlaws | Articles | Upcoming USMNT Schedule and path to the World Cup
2021 and 2022 are shaping up to be HUGE years for U. S. soccer—and the American Outlaws, too.
We expect some of our qualifying fixtures—and maybe some friendlies, too?—to be set in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for updates. If there’s a game, we will be there.
Note: Are you wondering, “What about the Women’s National Team?” We are, too. Aside from the Summer Olympics—they’ve already qualified—we expect plenty of matches for 2021 that’ll show the world we’re still #1.
The Hex is no more. Welcome to… THE OCTAGON.

UPDATE: AFTER THE DRAW – WORLD CUP QUALIFYING SCHEDULE IS SET
We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more. But rest assured, we’ll be in the stands – where and when it’s safe. We can’t wait, we miss you, #weloveya.
The Octagon – we’re coming for you.
————————————
You might have read last week that CONCACAF has updated the format for qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup – the last to feature 32 teams before we welcome 48 of ‘em to North America in 2026.
To sum it up, instead of six teams vying for three automatic bids, the final round will include eight teams vying for those three bids – the team to finish fourth will go to a playoff against a country likely from Asia or South America.
That means more games on our calendar – four qualifiers next June alone. That’s on top of the Gold Cup. And the Olympics (the women already booked their ticket to Tokyo – our U-23 male team will attempt to qualify at a date TBD). And the final two rounds of the Nations League!
We’re still waiting for more specifics, but it’s looking like 2021 – and early 2022, for that matter – is going to be a beast. And we’re going to need all hands on deck to cheer our teams on to victory. Will it be safe to be in the stands? By then, we sure as heck hope so.
In the meantime, we’re gonna start planning. Stay tuned.

The sixth annual SheBelieves Cup kicks off Thursday at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida, where the entire tournament will take place.
The U.S. women’s national team – which has won the SheBelieves Cup three times – will open play against Canada. This will be the 61st time that the USWNT has played Canada, the most it’s faced any opponent. The Americans are 50-3-7 in those games.
The four teams play in a round-robin tournament, with three points awarded for a win and one for a tie. If teams are even in points at the conclusion of the round-robin, goal differential is the first tiebreaker. Last year’s competition concluded on March 11 with the United States winning the tournament on the night the NBA – with the whole sports world soon to follow – shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

History
Team USA is one of the oldest soccer teams in North America and is now one of the strongest members of the CONCACAF zone.
In 2012, the president of CONCACAF submitted the idea to host a tournament in 2016 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of CONMEBOL (the organization that governs football in South America). As a result, we decided to play an unscheduled America’s Cup, in honor of the anniversary, in which all 10 representatives of the South American zone, and six of the best representatives of North America will take part. The United States won the right to host this tournament from Mexico and the “Stars and Stripes” team received a direct ticket to the tournament as the hosts of the championship.
Although in 2015 the US Football Federation threatened to abandon the tournament due to a corruption scandal in FIFA, in October it was still confirmed that the tournament would take place in the United States.
Team USA, led by Jurgen Klinsmann, sets maximum goals in America’s Cup 2016. The Americans want to rehabilitate themselves for their unsuccessful performance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, after which they finished only fourth, leaving Mexico, Jamaica and Panama behind.
Bookmakers on the eve of the tournament are considering the US team as the third favorite in the America’s Cup, offering 7 odds for the possible triumph of the Stars and Stripes.fifty.

90,000 World Youth Championship 2021 Calendar
On the first day of the 2021 World Youth Championship, the Russian national team will play with the USA team. It will be one of three matches to be played on December 25th.
The tournament will end on January 5 and will be held at Rogers Place in Edmonton with no fans in the stands in a safe bubble like the one in which the NHL played the Stanley Cup playoffs. Previously, the World Cup was to be held from December 26 to January 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer (Alberta).
The national teams of Russia and the USA will play in Group B at the preliminary stage together with the teams of Sweden, Austria and the Czech Republic. The Russian national team after the match with the Americans (December 26, Saturday, 5:30 Moscow time) will play on Sunday (December 28, Monday, 5:30 Moscow time) with the Czechs, on Tuesday (December 30, Wednesday, 5:30 Moscow time) with the Austrians and Wednesday (December 31, Thursday, 5:30 Moscow time) with the Swedes.
At the MFM-2020, the Russian national team took second place, losing to the Canadians in the final.
The national teams of Canada, Finland, Switzerland, Slovakia and Germany will play in Group A.
On December 13, the Russian team flew to Edmonton. On December 22 and 24, the Russian national team will play friendly matches against the teams of Slovakia and Canada.
The quarterfinals, which start on January 2, will feature the top four teams from each group. The semi-finals will take place on January 4, and the first and third place matches will take place on January 5.Since the International Ice Hockey Federation has canceled five U-20 tournaments in the lower divisions, there will be no team that will be downgraded at the 2021 MFM.
“A huge amount of work has been done in two years, so the schedule announcement shows how close we are to the starting faceoff,” said Riley Wheechard, Executive Director of the MFM-2021 Organizing Committee. “Last month we announced the tournament, and even knowing that there will be no spectators in the stands, there is joy in our province and throughout the country that fans will be able to see future hockey stars. “

The men’s team of the Russian Curling Federation will fight for the Olympic ticket to the 2022 Games in Beijing at the World Championships in Calgary
The pre-Olympic curling world championships were under threat, but they were rescued. This spring we are waiting for the world championships for men’s and women’s teams, as well as for mixed pairs. Men will be the first to host the 2021 World Cup from April 2 to 11 in Calgary. Among the participants and the Russians who will act as a team of the Russian Curling Federation Team (abbreviated as RCF).
With the cancellation of the World and European Championships in 2020, the upcoming tournament in Calgary will actually be the first big tournament in almost a year and a half. Russia will be represented by a team of Sergey Glukhov (skip), Dmitry Mironov , Evgeny Klimov , Anton Kalalba and Daniil Goryachev .It is noteworthy that in December Glukhov’s team lost in the final of the national championship in Sochi to the team of Alexei Timofeev , but the coaching staff of the national team preferred to rely on the skip of the silver medalists. Although the team went to Canada mixed – from representatives of different regions.
The Russians spent the final stage of preparation in Kislovodsk, mainly practicing team interactions and game situations. “As for the tasks and our goals, to show a decent game and climb in the standings as high as we can.We need to get into the top six, we will try to implement it, ”Glukhov told the press service of the Russian Curling Federation.
It is a place in the top 6 at the 2021 World Cup that will allow the Russian men’s team to qualify for the Games in Beijing. Although the task is extremely difficult – before the Russians have never climbed the World Cup higher than ninth place. If they fail to cope with the task, then the Russians will get another chance to get to the 2022 Games at the qualifying tournament in December, where, depending on the results of the Chinese national team, three more will be played in the current tournament (if the Chinese do not get into the top 6) or four Olympic packages.
