How it works: New tire regulations
In early December, the World Council approved the Sporting Regulations, which outlines the new tire regulations. British Autosport analyzed the changes and explained in detail how the teams will work with tires in the new season…
Has the number of tire sets for the weekend changed?
No, there are still 13. In previous years, teams received seven sets of harder and six sets of softer tires for each rider for the weekend. Now, out of 13 kits, two that Pirelli will determine must be used in the race, and they can be different. One set of the softest compound available is dedicated to qualifying for the finals. The remaining ten kits can be selected by teams/riders from the three available kits.
Has the ratio of the remaining ten sets been determined?
No. It depends on the team’s strategy for the weekend. For example, if a team does not give the FIA its choice, then it will receive three sets of the hardest composition, four of the medium and three of the softest. When choosing, the team can use different combinations depending on the settings of the car, the style of the rider, and so on.
Will teams receive an extra kit for the first 30 minutes of the first practice?
Previously, one set of harder tires was only used for the first half hour of the first session. Now one of the ten kits must be used in the first 40 minutes of the first training session – and teams will be able to work with any of the three available squads.
Will the teams be able to use the softest squad in the first and second parts of the qualification?
Yes, if they have chosen enough soft kits from the ten available for the weekend.
Is there a mandatory tire specification for the qualifying final and can this set also be used in the race?
This set is not called “mandatory qualifying tyres”, but since it will be the softest of the three compounds, it could be called that. And it can be used in the race. Most likely, the top ten will use it in the second part of qualifying, as they will have to start on it in the race.
Should the riders start on the set with the best time in the second part of the qualification?
Yes, as stated in the regulations, “pilots who qualify for the qualification final must start on the same kit that showed the best time in the second part. ”
We know there will be three trains available to drivers, but can all three be used during the race?
The answer is quite simple – yes.
Is there a minimum number of compounds that a driver must use in a race?
The rules sound simple enough – “each rider must use at least two different slick specifications during a race”. In other words, if the rider drove one lap on Soft, and the remaining 50 on Medium, this is within the rules.
Does the use of mandatory kits in a race mean that the teams will not actually have a free choice of tires?
The choice remains free as Pirelli chooses only two sets of tires for the race, and the team/driver can use the remaining ten as they wish, depending on whether they choose an aggressive or conservative strategy. And although Pirelli calls two mandatory sets of tires per race, the teams are left with a choice of three compounds.
Teams should decide early on how many and which kits they intend to use.
Does this mean that the tire strategy will now be chosen months before the race?
In fact, this is true, because under the new rules, teams must inform about their choice eight weeks before the European stages and fourteen weeks before the stages taking place outside Europe. Moreover, only a week before the selection of the team, they will find out which lineups are, in principle, available for the weekend.
Will the SuperSoft line-up be the same on all tracks or will the teams get different tires under the same name at different stages?
Pirelli decided to keep the current line-up names – they will always be the same.
Tire strategies in 2016 will be different from the strategies in 2015?
For the past two seasons, Pirelli has followed the principle that they proclaimed back in 2011 when they returned to Formula 1 – drivers must pit at least twice during the course of the race. First of all, this is due to the advent of hybrid power plants – the teams wanted to focus more on working with them and not worry about rubber. Going forward, Pirelli developed tires that had less impact on the course of the race.
With the introduction of the new fifth line-up and the increase in the number of options available per race, there are hopes that we will see a variety of strategy options, and the number of pit stops will increase to three.
Is it possible to single out individual races, the course of which will change significantly due to the new rules?
Pirelli believes racing in 2016 will be different from what we’ve seen this year, especially at the start of the season when teams may have trouble finding the best approach to the new rules.
heated tires change their properties! / MOTOR RACE.RU
Before the start of the Aragon Grand Prix, a number of representatives of MotoGP teams, whose pilots lost ground during the race at Silverstone, turned to Michelin with a request to take into account the results of their own internal investigation: the blame for the catastrophic “rubber dump” after 6-8 laps of the BritishGP was placed precisely on preheated tires.

MOTOR RACE.RU, September 10, 2021 – Team Suzuki Ecstar, Pramac Racing and Ducati Team provided Michelin with the results of their investigations, which indirectly confirm the hunch.
I’ll try to explain “on the fingers” what the essence of the problem is.
Not all tires issued by Michelin are used in free practice, qualifying and in the race. Unclaimed cylinders are returned to the Michelin warehouse and then reissued as new. However, before the races and FP4, where the most important test of the combat tire setups is done, the teams pre-heat several wheels ready for installation on motorcycles. This is a standard procedure to reduce the risk of a pilot falling: the rubber is heated to a temperature of +80 degrees before use, in this state polymerization processes begin, which improve the quality of the grip.
It turns out that a number of tires that were never used during the weekend are still used. Michelin calls a tire “used” if it has been fitted to the bike and has completed at least one lap around the track. If it hasn’t come to this, its status is “new”, and the rubber is returned to circulation.
Engineers of MotoGP teams are sure that tires that are warmed up before the race, but not used in the race, change their properties so much that in the case of repeated preheating and installation on a motorcycle, as was the case at Silverstone, polymerization reduces their endurance by more than two times – the rubber seems to “dry out”.
Michelin Motorsport has already encountered similar hypotheses at the beginning of the season, to which Piero Taramasso, the tire company’s project manager at MotoGP, stated that a number of tests and studies were carried out at Clerman-Ferrand, which did not confirm reports of a change in the structure of the top layer of rubber due to overheating and / or reheating. For this reason, Michelin continued to issue tires to the teams that were already in circulation, but returned to the warehouse as unused.

Casey Stoner: Now the Japanese are demotivated by Ducati’s dominance in MotoGP, but they will be back!
Another interesting comment was made by two-time MotoGP champion Casey Stoner, who won titles with Ducati and Honda, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023. Casey has the right to talk about the situation in Honda Racing today, since he himself worked for HRC for many years and it was Mark Marquez who came to replace him … ie from this. While Michelin officially does not want to confirm the guesses of the teams and pilots…
So the teams are pushing for Michelin to stop giving out preheated tires again. Or, these tires must have a special marking. Like, “used”, so that the teams know for sure that such cylinders should not be put on the race.
The most interesting thing is that even a year ago, Michelin gommists themselves suggested MotoGP teams to “pre-cook” rubber before races in order to increase the endurance of the top layer of rubber. It was this approach that helped the Yamaha pilots occupy the podium of the Circuito de Jerez in July 2020. The races were held in extremely hot conditions at an asphalt temperature of +60-62 degrees. All four Yamaha riders took the advice of the tire workers: at the morning warm-up, the teams took out combat sets of tires intended for the race from the shelf, on which Rossi, Quartararo, Viñales and Morbidelli made one lap at a leisurely pace. Then, the tires returned to the stand for additional warm-up. During this procedure, the top layer of rubber became more stable – and was able to withstand overheating on the hot Jerez track…
Michelin promised to think about how to deal with this situation – within the framework of the current regulations.
