Tracer: a bullet with a trail

Tracer ammunition is a bullet or cannon projectile that leaves a luminous trail in flight – a track. This effect allows you to adjust the shooting and aim other weapons at the targets. The use of tracers began in the First World War, and they are still used today, despite the development of various means of aiming and guidance.

Tracers are used not only for military use. Rostec presented its latest development in this area at the ORËLEXPO-2022 International Exhibition. This is the “Schleif-Vector” – the world’s first tracer cartridge for hunting.

It flies and glows

Since the middle of the 19th century, in connection with the appearance of rifled barrels, the range of firearms has increased. And if earlier the shooter most often saw the target and could fix the fact of a hit, then when the aiming range of the weapon increased from several hundred meters to 1. 5-2 km, new means of adjusting the fire were required.

At the beginning of the 20th century, engineers for these tasks came up with illuminating bullets that created a flash when the target was hit, but they fell under the international ban of the Hague Convention on explosive bullets. In addition, there were attempts to create bullets with a smoke trail, but they turned out to be ineffective due to the large loss of mass in flight and, as a result, a shift in the center of gravity of the projectile.

In 1915, British designers introduced a tracer cartridge – an ammunition that leaves a luminous trail behind it during the flight – a track. Then tracer bullets were not very bright and were used mainly at night. In the First World War, they proved to be especially effective in the fight against airships, since in addition to breaking the integrity of a gas cylinder, burning bullets also set fire to it.

Flame Bullet

Since then, tracers have been used to correct and direct fire. When the target is not visible, the shooter with the help of a tracer can at least see the trajectory of the bullet or projectile and correct it. Also, with the help of tracer bullets, you can specify targets for artillery. As a rule, a tracer projectile not only illuminates the path, but also fulfills its main purpose – to hit the target, although its effectiveness is usually lower than that of conventional projectiles. In the USSR and Russia, tracers are marked with green paint at the end of the bullet to distinguish them.

The device of the tracer bullet is quite simple. A luminous pyrotechnic composition and an igniter are added to the hollow base of the bullet. The igniter ignites when fired, it ignites the tracer composition, leaving a visible trace. Tracer burn-in changes the center of gravity of the bullet, which worsens flight stability, so tracers are made slightly longer than conventional bullets to compensate for this effect.

A logical question may arise here: what effectiveness of tracer bullets can we talk about if a luminous plume, especially at night, easily gives out the location of the shooter, causing return fire to kill? At the beginning of the use of tracers, this was the case, and they had to be used very carefully. But today the military uses tracers with a delayed effect – a delay element is included in the chemical composition, and the trace appears only at a certain distance from the barrel.

Modern bright tracers are visible even on a sunny day. In addition, there are special muted tracers, the light trail from which can only be seen with night vision devices. Tracers are mainly used for hand weapons, while fighters or tanks use other, more modern and effective means of guidance – lasers, radars, infrared heads, etc.

Hunting light

It is worth saying that military science is not the only area where it is necessary to highlight the movement of a bullet. Both athletes and hunters will not refuse the opportunity to improve the quality of shooting. For them, the Research Institute of Applied Chemistry, part of the Rostec State Corporation, has developed its own tracer. The product currently has no analogues in Russia and abroad.

Shot cartridge “Schleif-Vector” combines a shot and a light element. When fired, the luminous part flies in the middle of the scree of shot, clearly indicating the flight path. The ammunition can be used in 12 gauge smoothbore weapons with a chamber length of 70 mm or more. Depending on the lighting, the hunting tracer becomes visible at a distance of 15 meters. It glows for about 0.3 seconds, but this is enough to correct the next shot and successfully hit the target.

The cartridge can be used for firing not only from classic single-barreled, double-barreled or pump-action shotguns, but also from smooth-bore weapons with gas or inertial automatics. It combines comfortable recoil on the weapon, good combat sharpness and uniformity of scree at various distances. “Shleyf-Vektor” is certified as a civilian product and is approved for use in smoothbore weapons.

Integration of TFortis switches into Trassir

Purpose of integration TFortis switches in Trassir software – getting a single convenient tool for monitoring and managing a video surveillance system. At the same time, both IP cameras and switches to which these cameras are connected are monitored and controlled.

This integration automatically displays the following information in the Unified Operator Interface (Figures 2 and 3):

1. Device name.
2. Connection IP address.
3. Job status (online/offline).
4. Switch uptime.
5. Location.
6. Number of active ports, link status on the port.
7. Contact information.
8. Power consumed by the camera via PoE.
9. Port number on which a specific video camera is located.

The following functionality is also available:

1. Switch reboot.
2. Twisted pair cable test (only for PoE ports) – checks the cable from the switch port to the video camera, indicating the exact distance to open or short.
3. Manual reset of PoE ports.
4. Automatic restart (if the signal is lost for more than 10s, the port will be restarted).

To add the listed functionality to Trassir, an automation script is required. The script can be purchased at DSSL (the developer of Trassir)

The script must be added under Settings -> Automation -> New Script -> Load Example -> From File… (Figure 4).
