Okay, a couple things right off the top:

That really is a mantra that we should all keep in the back of our heads at all times, because when teams struggle for multiple games in a row, we have a way of writing them off. But the truth is, we don’t really know what’s going on in the hearts and minds of the athletes we love to watch so much. Thusly, sports surprise us.
In the words of the immortal Rowdy-Roddy Piper, “Just when they think they got the answers, I change the questions”!
- Quick memo to the ACC assistant who Anish Shroff had been told was saying it looked like Jakob Phaup was jumping early against Petey LaSalla in the first Syracuse-Virginia game in February: I guess you’re eyes were deceiving you, because Jakob Phaup OWNS the Virginia FOGOs.

Coming off a string of three straight ACC losses, two of which were embarrassing blowouts to UNC and ND, this Syracuse team had basically been written off by everyone, with no-one giving them a chance in you-know-where of beating Virginia in this one.
But the Orange proved that they do have the pride, and the fight, to keep their season going. They also reminded everyone that they’re not just the other team at the bottom of the ACC standings. How did they do it? Through the old-fashioned, tried-and-true method of completely dominating face-offs, ground balls, and shots to simply overpower their opponent.
It was almost as if Jakob Phaup was making up for the last month’s worth of struggling in one game. Phaup, who went 6-of-29 (21 percent) in the three straight ACC losses, took every face-off against UVA and exploded for 24-of-27. That would be an 89 percent success rate at the X in this game. Now that’s how you stage a comeback!
That level of supremacy on re-starts allowed ‘Cuse to control the possession and pace of the game, and helped win the always critical ground ball battle against the Cavaliers, 38-28.
But the most important thing that the face-offs allowed the Orange to do was absolutely destroy the Cavs in total shots, holding a commanding 54-30 edge in that category. You’ve gotta shoot to score, right? Well, SU gave themselves almost twice as many chances to score as UVA did, and made life twice as hard for the UVA defense and goalie Alex Rode in the process.
Any of this sounding familiar, by the way? Sounds an awful lot like what we’ve been bemoaning for the Syracuse defense and Drake Porter in recent weeks, huh?
Speaking of them, this was a huge step forward for a defense that has struggled so often this season with their communication and their ability to play as a unit without some form of a breakdown.
Not today. Today, playing without Nick DiPietro, Brandon Aviles, Dami Oladamoye, and Landon Clary, the depleted defense held Virginia to 11 goals. No, they weren’t perfect and still had their share of breakdowns leading to easier Cavalier goals, but you can’t argue with the results. Amazing what winning face-offs does for you.
Oh, by the way, Virginia’s two lowest goal totals this season? 10 & 11 — both coming against the Orange.
But truly, the VOLUME produced by the face-off dominance was the key today against the Cavs.
It’s not as if SU shot all that well overall. I mean, yes, they had some spectacular goals that stood out, but the team only shot 13-of-54 in this game. That’s 24 percent. That’s not good. But shooting 24 percent when you’ve taken 54 shots is significantly better than shooting 37 percent when you’ve only taken 30 shots. Just ask Virginia.
The ‘Cuse offense was very well balanced on a day when so many backups had expanded roles due to the absences of Chase Scanlan and Jacob Buttermore. Making his first collegiate start, Owen Seebold had the best day of his SU career filling in for Scanlan on attack with four points (2G, 2A). SU also saw resurgent days from Owen Hiltz (3G, 2A) with five points and Jamie Trimboli (3G, 1A) with four. Stephen Rehfuss and Lucas Quinn each had three points (2G, 1A) while Brendan Curry (1G, 1A) added two. Defensively, Brett Kennedy had a phenomenal day with three CTs and eight GBs.
The Implication
Well, first and foremost, this is the win we’ve all be hoping for. Since the Albany win, we’ve know that SU needed only one win in their final ACC gauntlet (UNC, UVA, ND) to ensure a .500 record for the season. Thankfully, they didn’t wait until the last week to secure win number six.
Now that we know the Orange will definitely be eligible for the NCAA tournament, we can fully turn our attention to whether they actually will make it as an at-large team.
For me, this is a simple one: they will. They now have two wins over one of the best teams out there in Virginia, plus three wins over fringe Top-20 teams from the America East in Albany, Vermont, and Stony Brook. Don’t pooh-pooh those wins. They will be quite useful in the eyes of the committee. Those wins combined with SU’s strength-of-schedule, which is obviously great due to the SIX games against ACC teams, should easily be enough to get the Orange in.
The question of placement is an entirely different issue, and given ‘Cuse’s struggles through the middle part of the season, it’s not tough to imagine that it’s going to be a difficult placement for them.
But, hey, they’re going to be in the dance. At this point, that’s the best we can ask for. More talk on that coming soon…
The Next Game
Syracuse will conclude their regular season next Saturday, May 1 at 12 PM on the road for a rematch with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The game will be televised on ESPN U.
The pressure of getting to .500 is behind us, and now we can root the boys on as they try to build their resume up even higher by getting revenge on the leprechauns.

#9 Irish Dominate #4 Syracuse In The Dome, 18-11 – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 9 Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team went into the Carrier Dome and turned in a dominant performance to defeat No. 4 Syracuse by a final score of 18-11.
The win is Baumer Family Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Kevin Corrigan’s 310th at Notre Dame, tying him with Bob Shillinglaw for most at a program at the DI level.
The 18 goals are the most the Irish have scored in the series against Syracuse, narrowly eclipsing the 17-goal win from the 2016 season.
The Irish attack got goal contributions from eight different players on the afternoon.
Leading the way was Pat Kavanagh, who turned in a monstrous nine-point display off four goals and five assists. Will Yorke and Griffin Westlin each scored four to carry the load for Notre Dame.
The duo of Kyle Gallagher and Charlie Leonard were a huge factor in the faceoff game, combining to win 23-of-32 at the dot, while scooping up 15 ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish got off to a slow start on Saturday, falling behind 6-2 early in the second quarter but then the attack went to work. Notre Dame reeled off a 5-0 run in the span of less than five minutes to take its first lead of the game at 7-6 at the midway mark of the second stanza.
Syracuse managed to answer with two goals of its own but the Irish closed the half strong, scoring four straight to take an 11-8 lead heading into the break.
Notre Dame carried its momentum into the third quarter, scoring three unanswered goals to extend its lead to six at 14-8. The Orange responded with three straight of their own to move the score to 14-11 after 45 minutes of action.
The Irish put the game away early in the fourth, finding the back of the net four times in the first six minutes of play to go on top 18-11. The Notre Dame defense shutout the Syracuse attack in the fourth frame to give the Irish the blowout win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
For the second time this season Kavanagh tied the Notre Dame program record for points in a game with nine. The sophomore scored four goals and dished out five assists against Syracuse. Pat’s brother Matt Kavanagh also had a nine-point performance against Syracuse in the Carrier Dome in a 17-7 win in 2016.

Capstone Profile: Luke Strang ’20
Luke Strang ’20 has played lacrosse since childhood and is on the men’s lacrosse team at Syracuse University. Originally from Olney, Maryland, he is now a senior finishing a degree in marketing at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. Primarily interested in sales marketing, Strang chose to pursue this area of study because it encompasses an array of skills and requires one to look at business scenarios from a consumer perspective.
In December, Strang was part of the third-place team for the fall semester Whitman Capstone competition. The group’s business idea, Goalie Guardian, is a company that creates specialty lacrosse goalie products, like their proposed product RippShield. The RippShield attaches to the head of a goalie’s lacrosse stick to cover their top hand, providing greater hand protection without affecting the range of motion or standard functionality.
The goal of the Goalie Guardian company is to continue to introduce specialty goalie products that will increase player safety and performance. Lacrosse goalies wear gloves to protect their hands from show impacts. Still, these gloves do not protect against injuries to goalies’ hands and fingers, which have become a common occurrence in the sport. Strang’s group came up with the idea through his own experiences as an athlete.
“I have struggled with the problem of breaking my fingers all throughout my career as a lacrosse player,” he explains.
“I have always felt that the goalie position lacks adequate protection as the game has sped up, especially the speed of the shots we defend. Unfortunately, the safety of the position has not grown with the sport, and we felt like there was an opportunity there.”
The group faced several challenges throughout the semester, especially in terms of business operations. They lacked specific knowledge about the manufacturing and supply chain processes of sports equipment. The group worked through these challenges together by talking to people in the business, speaking to at least 10 people in the industry per week.
For Strang, the most gratifying aspect was creating a finished product that has the potential to be real.
“This will be an experience I will never forget. It really showed us the amount of work it would take to start your own company,” he says. “In my opinion, the way to succeed in this competition is to treat your company as if it were real.”
In addition to playing on the Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse team, Strang is also on the leadership team for TEAM IMPACT, an organization connecting children battling serious or chronic illnesses with college athletic teams to form lifelong bonds and life-changing outcomes.
After graduation he hopes to go into sales in the IT industry.
Strang shares, “Something that I really didn’t expect is the friendships I formed with the rest of my team,” Strang shares. “Within our team, we genuinely enjoyed working with each other, and it made the entire process fun.”

But first, the Mets are counting on their big-name newcomer to hold down the fort at shortstop for a while.
With the trade deadline fast approaching Friday, the Mets acquired Báez and pitcher Trevor Williams from the Chicago Cubs for outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Báez, a two-time All-Star and 2020 Gold Glove winner, gives New York an immediate fill-in for Lindor. The star shortstop, obtained from Cleveland in a blockbuster deal last winter, is sidelined with a strained oblique and not expected back until at least mid-to-late August.
Báez, who can become a free agent after the season, is batting .248 with 22 home runs and 65 RBIs. He has a .775 OPS and 13 stolen bases in 16 tries, but also leads the National League with 131 strikeouts. He has made 18 errors in 88 games.
“We think he adds a lot — brings a ton of energy to our team,” Mets acting general manager Zack Scott said. “Knows how to win, knows how to do a lot of things to help us win. Plays elite defense, and baserunning and power.”
Báez and Lindor both went to high school in Florida and played against each other in front of scores of scouts.
They were drafted back-to-back in 2011, with Lindor going eighth overall to Cleveland and Báez ninth to the Cubs. They were teammates with Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.
Both are energetic players with an entertaining flair. Báez’s boisterous antics sometimes rankle opponents.
“He knows some people on our team, obviously,” Scott said. “He’s been very vocal about wanting to play with Francisco, which he’ll get an opportunity to do at some point when Francisco’s back playing for us. But we just think this really makes our team pretty deep and versatile. So we’re excited to have him.”
When Lindor returns, Báez could move to second base or even third if needed. At second, he and Lindor would make for a slick double-play combination.
“He fits a direct positional need right now with Francisco being out for a little while. But he is also excited to move around and, as he’s said publicly even before coming here, that he’d be willing to move around the diamond,” Scott said.
“And so he provides that versatility that I’ve also talked about when Francisco does return and takes over at shortstop.”
New York has Jeff McNeil at second base and J.D. Davis at third, with Jonathan Villar and Luis Guillorme also getting significant playing time in the infield this season due in large part to injuries and their own fine play. Villar and Guillorme have been filling in at shortstop for Lindor.
“There’s plenty of time to have that dialogue and feel things out for what makes the most sense with the roster,” Scott said. “Things change daily around here this year. For right now, though, we know where (Báez) is going to be.”
Williams was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, but also is a meaningful addition for a Mets team that was eager to reinforce a thin starting rotation depleted by injuries. Scott revealed Friday that ace Jacob deGrom has been shut down for two more weeks because of inflammation in his right arm, making it unlikely he’ll rejoin the team before September.
Scott said deGrom was diagnosed with inflammation following a bullpen session Thursday.
Williams is 4-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) this season, his first with the Cubs after spending his first five years in Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old right-hander is eligible for arbitration after this season and can become a free agent following the 2022 season.
“I told him he’s definitely going to be part of what we’re trying to do here,” Scott said.
The Mets also received cash as part of the deal.
New York began the day with a 3 1/2-game lead in the NL East over Philadelphia, and third-place Atlanta was four back. Both those teams also made moves before Friday’s trade deadline in an effort to upgrade and chase down the Mets.
Before the deal for Báez and Williams, the Mets acquired veteran left-hander Rich Hill from Tampa Bay last week and plugged him into the rotation.
“We definitely tried and explored a lot of different things,” Scott said.
“We just didn’t match up on everything. But we tried several things. We did bring in, like I said, depth pitching.”
The 19-year-old Armstrong, a first-round draft pick out of high school last year, is sidelined with a right shoulder injury. A left-handed thrower, he is considered an elite defender in center field.
Crow-Armstrong played six games this season for Class A St. Lucie before getting hurt in May. He was 10 for 24 (.417) with two doubles, four RBIs, two stolen bases, seven walks and six strikeouts.

7. RULES FOR PURCHASING AND REFUNDING TICKETS
7.1. Payment and Return Currency

7.3. Refusal to issue Tickets

a) upon receipt of information from the System about a fraudulent transaction or suspicion of committing a fraudulent transaction using the Client’s Bank Card until the Payment is returned to the Client’s Bank Card;
b) if the Tickets for the relevant Order were issued to the Client earlier;
c) if it is impossible to identify the person of the recipient of the Tickets;
d) return of the Payment for the relevant Order before the Client contacts the Cashier to receive the Ticket for the Order;
e) discrepancies between the personal data about the Client (full name) indicated in the Voucher and in the identity document presented by the Client.
7.3.2. 8. PRIVACY OF INFORMATION
8.1. ROSPHOTO undertakes not to disclose the information received from the Client. The provision of information by ROSPHOTO to persons acting on the basis of an agreement with ROSPHOTO in order to fulfill obligations to the Client shall not be considered a violation. ROSPHOTO provides access to the personal data of the Client only to those employees, contractors and agents who need this information to ensure the functioning of the Site and the provision of services to the Client.

9. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

10. FINAL PROVISIONS
10.1. This document is an exhaustive Agreement between the Client and ROSPHOTO and defines the conditions for using the Site. In the event of a conflict, the text of the Agreement posted on the site will take precedence over any other text of the Agreement.
10.2. In cases not specified in the Agreement, the relationship between ROSPHOTO and the client is governed by the current legislation of the Russian Federation.

3. In the event of disagreements and disputes over the Agreement and its scope, ROSPHOTO and the Client will make every possible effort to resolve them through negotiations.
