How did Syracuse men’s lacrosse team secure a surprise win against Virginia. What were the key factors that contributed to their success. How does this victory impact Syracuse’s season outlook.
The Unexpected Triumph: Syracuse’s 13-11 Victory over Virginia
In a stunning turn of events, the No. 11 Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse team secured a crucial 13-11 victory over the No. 5 Virginia Cavaliers. This win, which took place on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville, has breathed new life into Syracuse’s season and potentially secured their place in May lacrosse.
The Orange, coming off a string of three consecutive ACC losses, including two embarrassing blowouts to UNC and Notre Dame, had been largely written off by most observers. However, they proved their mettle and demonstrated that they belong in the conversation with the best teams in the country when they play at their peak.
Domination at the Face-off X: Jakob Phaup’s Stellar Performance
One of the most crucial factors in Syracuse’s victory was the exceptional performance of Jakob Phaup at the face-off X. Phaup, who had struggled in recent games with a mere 21% success rate, staged a remarkable comeback against Virginia. He took every face-off and won an astounding 24 out of 27, achieving an 89% success rate.
This dominance at the X allowed Syracuse to control possession, dictate the pace of the game, and win the critical ground ball battle 38-28. But perhaps most importantly, it enabled the Orange to overwhelm Virginia in total shots, holding a commanding 54-30 edge.
The Impact of Face-off Dominance on Offensive Output
- Increased possession time
- More scoring opportunities
- Ability to control game tempo
- Reduced pressure on defense
Syracuse’s Offensive Strategy: Volume Over Efficiency
While Syracuse’s shooting percentage of 24% (13 goals on 54 shots) might not seem impressive at first glance, it was their sheer volume of shots that made the difference. This approach proved more effective than Virginia’s 37% shooting on only 30 attempts.
The Orange offense displayed remarkable balance, with several players stepping up in the absence of key contributors Chase Scanlan and Jacob Buttermore. Owen Seebold, making his first collegiate start, had a career-best performance with four points (2 goals, 2 assists). Owen Hiltz (3 goals, 2 assists) and Jamie Trimboli (3 goals, 1 assist) also had standout games.
Defensive Resilience: Holding Virginia to a Season-Low
Despite playing without several key defenders, including Nick DiPietro, Brandon Aviles, Dami Oladamoye, and Landon Clary, the Syracuse defense put forth a commendable effort. They held Virginia to just 11 goals, tying the Cavaliers’ lowest output of the season.
While not perfect, the depleted defense showed improved communication and cohesion. Brett Kennedy, in particular, had a phenomenal day with three caused turnovers and eight ground balls.
The Power of Perseverance: Overcoming Recent Struggles
This victory serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictable nature of sports and the importance of perseverance. Despite their recent struggles, Syracuse never lost faith in their abilities and continued to work hard. Their efforts paid off in this crucial game against a top-ranked opponent.
Lessons from Syracuse’s Comeback
- Never underestimate a team’s potential to bounce back
- The importance of mental toughness in overcoming adversity
- How a single game can change the trajectory of a season
- The value of balanced team performance in securing victories
Implications for Syracuse’s Season and NCAA Tournament Hopes
This victory over Virginia could be a turning point for Syracuse’s season. It not only improves their record and standing within the ACC but also boosts their resume for NCAA tournament selection. The win demonstrates that Syracuse can compete with and defeat top-ranked teams, which will be a crucial factor in postseason considerations.
Furthermore, the confidence gained from this upset victory could propel Syracuse to stronger performances in their remaining games. It serves as a reminder of their potential when firing on all cylinders and could be the catalyst for a late-season surge.
Areas for Improvement: Building on the Victory
While this win is certainly cause for celebration, Syracuse still has room for improvement. Their shooting efficiency, at 24%, leaves something to be desired. Additionally, while the defense performed admirably, there were still moments of breakdown that led to easier goals for Virginia.
As the team looks to build on this victory, focusing on these areas could help them become an even more formidable opponent:
- Improving shooting accuracy and shot selection
- Further enhancing defensive communication and cohesion
- Maintaining face-off dominance consistently across games
- Developing depth to mitigate the impact of player absences
The Road Ahead: Syracuse’s Remaining Schedule and Postseason Prospects
With this crucial victory under their belt, Syracuse now faces the challenge of maintaining their momentum through the remainder of their schedule. Each game will be critical in solidifying their position for postseason play.
The Orange have demonstrated that they have the talent and determination to compete with the best teams in the country. If they can consistently perform at the level they showed against Virginia, they could be a dangerous team in the NCAA tournament.
Key Factors for Syracuse’s Continued Success
- Consistency in face-off performance
- Balanced offensive contributions
- Continued improvement in defensive cohesion
- Maintaining mental toughness and resilience
- Adapting to opponent strategies and in-game adjustments
As the lacrosse world looks on, Syracuse has undoubtedly reestablished themselves as a team to watch. Their upset victory over Virginia serves as a reminder of the program’s storied history and their potential to make noise in the postseason.
While challenges certainly lie ahead, the Orange have shown that they possess the talent, determination, and ability to rise to the occasion when it matters most. As they continue their journey through the season, all eyes will be on Syracuse to see if they can build upon this momentum and make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
In the unpredictable world of college lacrosse, Syracuse has once again proven that they should never be counted out. As they move forward, the question remains: Can they harness the energy from this victory and translate it into consistent success? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the Syracuse men’s lacrosse team has reminded everyone why they are a perennial force in the sport.
No. 11 Syracuse men’s lacrosse gets season-changing win against No. 5 Virginia, 13-11
Okay, a couple things right off the top:
- Let this serve as a reminder to us all: SPORTS. HAVE. A. WAY. OF. SURPRISING. US.
That really is a mantra that we should all keep in the back of our heads at all times, because when teams struggle for multiple games in a row, we have a way of writing them off. But the truth is, we don’t really know what’s going on in the hearts and minds of the athletes we love to watch so much. Thusly, sports surprise us.
In the words of the immortal Rowdy-Roddy Piper, “Just when they think they got the answers, I change the questions”!
- Quick memo to the ACC assistant who Anish Shroff had been told was saying it looked like Jakob Phaup was jumping early against Petey LaSalla in the first Syracuse-Virginia game in February: I guess you’re eyes were deceiving you, because Jakob Phaup OWNS the Virginia FOGOs. My word was that domination if I’ve ever seen it. I mean, speaking of things we never saw coming…Jakob. Phaup. (I’m gonna keep writing his name in bold — that’s how good he was today)
On a glorious Saturday afternoon down in Charlottesville, the No. 11 Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse team breathed life back into their season with a massive 13-11 victory over the No. 5 Virginia Cavaliers, a win that may have just punched their ticket to May lacrosse.
Coming off a string of three straight ACC losses, two of which were embarrassing blowouts to UNC and ND, this Syracuse team had basically been written off by everyone, with no-one giving them a chance in you-know-where of beating Virginia in this one.
But the Orange proved that they do have the pride, and the fight, to keep their season going. They also reminded everyone that they’re not just the other team at the bottom of the ACC standings. They’re legit, and, when they play like this, they belong in the conversation with the best teams in the country.
How did they do it? Through the old-fashioned, tried-and-true method of completely dominating face-offs, ground balls, and shots to simply overpower their opponent.
It was almost as if Jakob Phaup was making up for the last month’s worth of struggling in one game. Phaup, who went 6-of-29 (21 percent) in the three straight ACC losses, took every face-off against UVA and exploded for 24-of-27. That would be an 89 percent success rate at the X in this game. Now that’s how you stage a comeback!
That level of supremacy on re-starts allowed ‘Cuse to control the possession and pace of the game, and helped win the always critical ground ball battle against the Cavaliers, 38-28.
But the most important thing that the face-offs allowed the Orange to do was absolutely destroy the Cavs in total shots, holding a commanding 54-30 edge in that category. You’ve gotta shoot to score, right? Well, SU gave themselves almost twice as many chances to score as UVA did, and made life twice as hard for the UVA defense and goalie Alex Rode in the process.
Any of this sounding familiar, by the way? Sounds an awful lot like what we’ve been bemoaning for the Syracuse defense and Drake Porter in recent weeks, huh?
Speaking of them, this was a huge step forward for a defense that has struggled so often this season with their communication and their ability to play as a unit without some form of a breakdown.
Not today. Today, playing without Nick DiPietro, Brandon Aviles, Dami Oladamoye, and Landon Clary, the depleted defense held Virginia to 11 goals. No, they weren’t perfect and still had their share of breakdowns leading to easier Cavalier goals, but you can’t argue with the results. Amazing what winning face-offs does for you.
Oh, by the way, Virginia’s two lowest goal totals this season? 10 & 11 — both coming against the Orange.
But truly, the VOLUME produced by the face-off dominance was the key today against the Cavs. It’s not as if SU shot all that well overall. I mean, yes, they had some spectacular goals that stood out, but the team only shot 13-of-54 in this game. That’s 24 percent. That’s not good. But shooting 24 percent when you’ve taken 54 shots is significantly better than shooting 37 percent when you’ve only taken 30 shots. Just ask Virginia.
The ‘Cuse offense was very well balanced on a day when so many backups had expanded roles due to the absences of Chase Scanlan and Jacob Buttermore. Making his first collegiate start, Owen Seebold had the best day of his SU career filling in for Scanlan on attack with four points (2G, 2A). SU also saw resurgent days from Owen Hiltz (3G, 2A) with five points and Jamie Trimboli (3G, 1A) with four. Stephen Rehfuss and Lucas Quinn each had three points (2G, 1A) while Brendan Curry (1G, 1A) added two. Defensively, Brett Kennedy had a phenomenal day with three CTs and eight GBs.
The Implication
Well, first and foremost, this is the win we’ve all be hoping for. Since the Albany win, we’ve know that SU needed only one win in their final ACC gauntlet (UNC, UVA, ND) to ensure a .500 record for the season. Thankfully, they didn’t wait until the last week to secure win number six.
Now that we know the Orange will definitely be eligible for the NCAA tournament, we can fully turn our attention to whether they actually will make it as an at-large team.
For me, this is a simple one: they will. They now have two wins over one of the best teams out there in Virginia, plus three wins over fringe Top-20 teams from the America East in Albany, Vermont, and Stony Brook. Don’t pooh-pooh those wins. They will be quite useful in the eyes of the committee. Those wins combined with SU’s strength-of-schedule, which is obviously great due to the SIX games against ACC teams, should easily be enough to get the Orange in.
The question of placement is an entirely different issue, and given ‘Cuse’s struggles through the middle part of the season, it’s not tough to imagine that it’s going to be a difficult placement for them. But, hey, they’re going to be in the dance. At this point, that’s the best we can ask for. More talk on that coming soon…
The Next Game
Syracuse will conclude their regular season next Saturday, May 1 at 12 PM on the road for a rematch with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The game will be televised on ESPN U.
The pressure of getting to .500 is behind us, and now we can root the boys on as they try to build their resume up even higher by getting revenge on the leprechauns.
Let’s Go Orange!!!

#9 Irish Dominate #4 Syracuse In The Dome, 18-11 – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 9 Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team went into the Carrier Dome and turned in a dominant performance to defeat No. 4 Syracuse by a final score of 18-11.
The win is Baumer Family Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Kevin Corrigan’s 310th at Notre Dame, tying him with Bob Shillinglaw for most at a program at the DI level.
The 18 goals are the most the Irish have scored in the series against Syracuse, narrowly eclipsing the 17-goal win from the 2016 season.
The Irish attack got goal contributions from eight different players on the afternoon. Leading the way was Pat Kavanagh, who turned in a monstrous nine-point display off four goals and five assists. Will Yorke and Griffin Westlin each scored four to carry the load for Notre Dame.
The duo of Kyle Gallagher and Charlie Leonard were a huge factor in the faceoff game, combining to win 23-of-32 at the dot, while scooping up 15 ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish got off to a slow start on Saturday, falling behind 6-2 early in the second quarter but then the attack went to work. Notre Dame reeled off a 5-0 run in the span of less than five minutes to take its first lead of the game at 7-6 at the midway mark of the second stanza.
Syracuse managed to answer with two goals of its own but the Irish closed the half strong, scoring four straight to take an 11-8 lead heading into the break.
Notre Dame carried its momentum into the third quarter, scoring three unanswered goals to extend its lead to six at 14-8. The Orange responded with three straight of their own to move the score to 14-11 after 45 minutes of action.
The Irish put the game away early in the fourth, finding the back of the net four times in the first six minutes of play to go on top 18-11. The Notre Dame defense shutout the Syracuse attack in the fourth frame to give the Irish the blowout win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
For the second time this season Kavanagh tied the Notre Dame program record for points in a game with nine. The sophomore scored four goals and dished out five assists against Syracuse. Pat’s brother Matt Kavanagh also had a nine-point performance against Syracuse in the Carrier Dome in a 17-7 win in 2016.

Capstone Profile: Luke Strang ’20
Luke Strang ’20 has played lacrosse since childhood and is on the men’s lacrosse team at Syracuse University. Originally from Olney, Maryland, he is now a senior finishing a degree in marketing at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. Primarily interested in sales marketing, Strang chose to pursue this area of study because it encompasses an array of skills and requires one to look at business scenarios from a consumer perspective.
In December, Strang was part of the third-place team for the fall semester Whitman Capstone competition. The group’s business idea, Goalie Guardian, is a company that creates specialty lacrosse goalie products, like their proposed product RippShield. The RippShield attaches to the head of a goalie’s lacrosse stick to cover their top hand, providing greater hand protection without affecting the range of motion or standard functionality.
The goal of the Goalie Guardian company is to continue to introduce specialty goalie products that will increase player safety and performance. Lacrosse goalies wear gloves to protect their hands from show impacts. Still, these gloves do not protect against injuries to goalies’ hands and fingers, which have become a common occurrence in the sport. Strang’s group came up with the idea through his own experiences as an athlete.
“I have struggled with the problem of breaking my fingers all throughout my career as a lacrosse player,” he explains. “I have always felt that the goalie position lacks adequate protection as the game has sped up, especially the speed of the shots we defend. Unfortunately, the safety of the position has not grown with the sport, and we felt like there was an opportunity there.”
The group faced several challenges throughout the semester, especially in terms of business operations. They lacked specific knowledge about the manufacturing and supply chain processes of sports equipment. The group worked through these challenges together by talking to people in the business, speaking to at least 10 people in the industry per week.
For Strang, the most gratifying aspect was creating a finished product that has the potential to be real.
“This will be an experience I will never forget. It really showed us the amount of work it would take to start your own company,” he says. “In my opinion, the way to succeed in this competition is to treat your company as if it were real.”
In addition to playing on the Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse team, Strang is also on the leadership team for TEAM IMPACT, an organization connecting children battling serious or chronic illnesses with college athletic teams to form lifelong bonds and life-changing outcomes. After graduation he hopes to go into sales in the IT industry.
Strang shares, “Something that I really didn’t expect is the friendships I formed with the rest of my team,” Strang shares. “Within our team, we genuinely enjoyed working with each other, and it made the entire process fun.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Javier Báez got his wish: He’s headed to New York to play with longtime pal Francisco Lindor.
But first, the Mets are counting on their big-name newcomer to hold down the fort at shortstop for a while.
With the trade deadline fast approaching Friday, the Mets acquired Báez and pitcher Trevor Williams from the Chicago Cubs for outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Báez, a two-time All-Star and 2020 Gold Glove winner, gives New York an immediate fill-in for Lindor. The star shortstop, obtained from Cleveland in a blockbuster deal last winter, is sidelined with a strained oblique and not expected back until at least mid-to-late August.
Báez, who can become a free agent after the season, is batting .248 with 22 home runs and 65 RBIs. He has a .775 OPS and 13 stolen bases in 16 tries, but also leads the National League with 131 strikeouts. He has made 18 errors in 88 games.
“We think he adds a lot — brings a ton of energy to our team,” Mets acting general manager Zack Scott said. “Knows how to win, knows how to do a lot of things to help us win. Plays elite defense, and baserunning and power.”
Báez and Lindor both went to high school in Florida and played against each other in front of scores of scouts. They were drafted back-to-back in 2011, with Lindor going eighth overall to Cleveland and Báez ninth to the Cubs. They were teammates with Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.
Both are energetic players with an entertaining flair. Báez’s boisterous antics sometimes rankle opponents.
“He knows some people on our team, obviously,” Scott said. “He’s been very vocal about wanting to play with Francisco, which he’ll get an opportunity to do at some point when Francisco’s back playing for us. But we just think this really makes our team pretty deep and versatile. So we’re excited to have him.”
When Lindor returns, Báez could move to second base or even third if needed. At second, he and Lindor would make for a slick double-play combination.
“He fits a direct positional need right now with Francisco being out for a little while. But he is also excited to move around and, as he’s said publicly even before coming here, that he’d be willing to move around the diamond,” Scott said. “And so he provides that versatility that I’ve also talked about when Francisco does return and takes over at shortstop.”
New York has Jeff McNeil at second base and J.D. Davis at third, with Jonathan Villar and Luis Guillorme also getting significant playing time in the infield this season due in large part to injuries and their own fine play. Villar and Guillorme have been filling in at shortstop for Lindor.
“There’s plenty of time to have that dialogue and feel things out for what makes the most sense with the roster,” Scott said. “Things change daily around here this year. For right now, though, we know where (Báez) is going to be.”
Williams was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, but also is a meaningful addition for a Mets team that was eager to reinforce a thin starting rotation depleted by injuries. Scott revealed Friday that ace Jacob deGrom has been shut down for two more weeks because of inflammation in his right arm, making it unlikely he’ll rejoin the team before September.
Scott said deGrom was diagnosed with inflammation following a bullpen session Thursday.
Williams is 4-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) this season, his first with the Cubs after spending his first five years in Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old right-hander is eligible for arbitration after this season and can become a free agent following the 2022 season.
“I told him he’s definitely going to be part of what we’re trying to do here,” Scott said.
The Mets also received cash as part of the deal.
New York began the day with a 3 1/2-game lead in the NL East over Philadelphia, and third-place Atlanta was four back. Both those teams also made moves before Friday’s trade deadline in an effort to upgrade and chase down the Mets.
Before the deal for Báez and Williams, the Mets acquired veteran left-hander Rich Hill from Tampa Bay last week and plugged him into the rotation.
“We definitely tried and explored a lot of different things,” Scott said. “We just didn’t match up on everything. But we tried several things. We did bring in, like I said, depth pitching.”
The 19-year-old Armstrong, a first-round draft pick out of high school last year, is sidelined with a right shoulder injury. A left-handed thrower, he is considered an elite defender in center field.
Crow-Armstrong played six games this season for Class A St. Lucie before getting hurt in May. He was 10 for 24 (.417) with two doubles, four RBIs, two stolen bases, seven walks and six strikeouts.
The move was one of several by the disappointing Cubs in the days leading up to the deadline. Ready to rebuild, Chicago also traded away first baseman Anthony Rizzo, slugger Kris Bryant and closer Craig Kimbrel, plus other pieces.

Thomas More – Natalia Basovskaya – Everything is so – Echo of Moscow, October 29, 2006
A. VENEDIKTOV – 13:16 minutes. And Natalia Basovskaya is on the air. Good afternoon, Natalya Ivanovna!
N. BASOVSKAYA – Hello!
A. VENEDIKTOV – I want to say that Thomas More, of course, was present in school history books, but as a herald of socialism. The elder brother of Karl Marx. In a beautiful beret … Did Holbein draw, in my opinion?
N. BASOVSKAYA – Hans Holbein the Younger.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – And I will definitely tell you about this portrait. It is important.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Mandatory. Here. But we only knew about him that he wrote a certain book “Utopia” and that he is, in the sense, the elder grandfather of Karl Marx, for a socialist state. Everything, period.
N. BASOVSKAYA – And this is unfair. He is a victim of an ideological scheme, an ideological program. A completely involuntary sacrifice, because the personality of Thomas More, as a person, as a humanist in all respects, in all senses, and as a participant in the humanistic movement of his era, the 16th century, and as a humane, supremely noble person, is overshadowed by this work of his, which, in fact, is not so interesting …
A. VENEDIKTOV – “Utopia”, in the sense.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Yes, “Utopia”, yes. Not so fascinating … although it was noticed by contemporaries. But Thomas More decisively does not boil down to this. What, in fact, should he be, well, it seems to me, glorious in history? A humanist in every sense. Poet. His poetry is not interesting to us today. But at one time a poet, a prominent one. Especially, the author of epigrams – interesting, smart. Philosopher, statesman – noticeable! Strange! Who tried, under the rule of the tyrant Henry VIII, the murderer of his wives, to carry out some ideas in life – nobility, humanism, sympathy for the weak, mercy for the disadvantaged … an amazing statesman. And he showed it in some way. The author of the essay “Utopia” – of course. Contemporaries liked it, they were interested in it. But not like that.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Not like later in Soviet times.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Of course.
A. VENEDIKTOV – How did it interest them?
N. BASOVSKAYA – He was perceived … in different ways. On the one hand, humanistic circles – educated people, of whom there were not very many, they almost all knew each other, lived such an elite academic life. They appreciated the style, appreciated the unusual descriptions. And some even tried to learn it by heart, believing that this is a very beautiful literary work. It has a kind of patriarchal flavor. Others took it very naively, and began, for example, to prepare expeditions in search of this island.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Utopia? Islands of Utopia?
N. BASOVSKAYA – Utopia. And what the name itself means – non-existent.
A. VENEDIKTOV – They did not know Latin well. Those who prepared the expedition.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Bad (laughs). Moreover, Greek.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Oh, this is Greek, is it not Latin? Is that Greek? Greek.
N. BASOVSKAYA – No, in Latin it is a little different. And … that is. it was not limited to this “Utopia”. And more than anything else, his “The Story of Richard III” …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes, yes, yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – … translated into Russian by Osinovsky, our very good professional, a Soviet specialist, it was more interesting. And it is even more interesting today.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes, yes, yes. I recommend it to everyone, it was published in Russian, “The Story of Richard III”.
N. BASOVSKAYA – She is very interesting, she is a tyrant-fighting book. The book is internally edifying, but written in a lively, interesting way. He distorted Richard – this, apparently, is already clear today. He made him a greater villain than he was, in ancient traditions giving him an external ugliness. This, here, went from Homer. If the author – for example, Homer – does not like the hero, then he is necessarily a freak and outwardly.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Tersite, for example.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Tersite. Necessarily. He has some kind of hair sticking out, he is humpbacked. But at all …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Lame …
N. BASOVSKAYA – Well, what kind of hunchback warrior is there, well, what kind of hunchback warrior?
A. VENEDIKTOV – Humpbacked Greek warrior.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Well, nonsense! These are Homer’s attachments. So here – he biasedly presented Richard, but vividly, interestingly, and his goal – to show how terrible and terrible tyranny is, he achieved his goal.Well, and finally, Mor is for contemporaries and people close to his time – an example of moral purity, nobility, fortitude. He won amazing victories over himself.
A. VENEDIKTOV – This is the most important thing. Anyone can win a victory over another, but over himself …
N. BASOVSKAYA – But above you. When he was summoned, before his tragic death – as you know, by order of an unjust court directed by Henry VIII, they cut off his head – he, knowing that, behold, he is being summoned to this commission, where he must take the oath to those decisions of the king, which he cannot accept.I hope to talk about them later.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes, yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – He was accompanied by his son-in-law, Roper, to this commission, where he had to say either “yes” or “no”. The king wanted yes, so that Mora’s moral authority was with him. He whispered to Roper as he boarded the boat: “The battle is won.” The son-in-law did not understand. He said: “I am very glad, sir,” believing that he somehow found a way out of this commission, the court …
A. VENEDIKTOV – And he will save the family, yes.
N.BASOVSKAYA – He meant – then Roper understood, and wrote about it in his memoirs – he prayed and thought all night. This is a victory over oneself. Accept any physical torment, accept death, but not betray yourself.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Above yourself, above your fear, above all, the fear of execution.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Human. Just before the execution …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Usual.
N. BASOVSKAYA – … he was scourged the night before the execution in the cell – and several previous nights – saying that “I must teach, suppress my body, which is still experiencing physical fear.”This is who Mor was – the highest moral authority. Preserved, one might say, two of his portraits. The one you mentioned is the work of Hans Holbein the Younger, painted in 1527. And Mor was born in 1478 – this is already a mature husband on the verge of his chancellorship: he will become Lord Chancellor in two years. The portrait is beautiful, but, in my opinion, this is not quite the same Mor. This is a nobleman. This is a nobleman in a ceremonial suit. And another portrait – verbal, written by his friend and great man, Erasmus of Rotterdam, his elder friend.Erasmus of Rotterdam, in a letter to another great humanist Ulrich von Hutten in Germany, at the request of Gutten, described what Mor is. And this text, written by a great man, well translated into Russian by a certain Yakovenko even before the revolution, is a stunning, nagging, touching and not at all like a ceremonial portrait. Two or three phrases from there: “The skin on his face is white, with a pale pinkish tinge, his hair is black, turning into brown-haired, his beard is sparse. The eyes are bluish-gray with specks. Such eyes usually indicate an outstanding intelligence and are considered especially beautiful among the English. His face often lights up with a smile, and in general, it serves as a faithful mirror of his inner qualities, his cheerful and amiable disposition. Indeed, Mor is more of a cheerful person than a serious, sedately important husband. ” Well, another contemporary wrote that he knows how to be both this and that. This is Robert Whittington, the Oxford grammar: “Mor is a man of the angelic mind” – an interesting expression! “… Angelic mind and rare scholarship. For where else is there a man of such nobility, modesty, and courtesy. And if by the time he is given amazing gaiety and amusement, at the same time to sad seriousness, he is a man for all times. “This gave rise to the twentieth century English playwright Robert Bolt to name his play about Thomas More “A Man for All Seasons.” This is well known. Those. he was in his own era, a strange era, combining humanistic . ..
A. VENEDIKTOV – Stormy, I would say, stormy …
N. BASOVSKAYA – … transitional, broken, he was a moral model and example. For all thinking – it would still be okay, but also for ordinary people. When there was a riot in London, in connection with some regular royal extortions, cruelties, he, as part of a deputation of such respected townspeople, petitioned the king not to crack down cruelly. He always fought against cruelty, looked for a peaceful solution to some issues, and he was adored by ordinary people in London for justice. To be fair in the most brutal era, being in government positions …
A. VENEDIKTOV – And what kind!
N. BASOVSKAYA – the Highest. He is step by step … If possible, I will remind, here, his biography of the ascent, because …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Career, yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – … this is very little known. But first I will say: before his execution he was led through London, through the City – so the king ordered. There were loud sobs. Those. his … behold, respect for him. Erasmus just fell ill at once in the most difficult way, soon died. And Mora’s execution was the greatest event and symbol. But that later. So what did he do? Firstly, he did not live so long – 50 …
A. VENEDIKTOV – 57.
N. BASOVSKAYA – 57 years old. And yet he did a lot. Father – London lawyer, royal judge, received nobility – received nobility. But the family lived very well. Decent, not rich. Mor then earned more.It just worked. Because he became a very successful lawyer. Well, his father sent him to the grammar school at St. Anthony’s hospital. All training there was in Latin. His Latin was like a native language. Latin, rhetoric. As a teenager, he was sent to the traditional service as a page in Lambeth Palace, to the Archbishop of Canterbury. There he was noticed that he was an outstanding teenager. And the archbishop took part in his fate, wrote that he was an outstanding boy. And he was right. Then he entered Oxford University, where the archbishop assigned him, he studied for about two years. He studied classical trivium, in Latin there are three basic subjects: grammar, rhetoric, logic. In 1494, at the request of his father, not really striving for this, but fulfilling his father’s will – he became a lawyer. His mother died during childbirth, his father was the main figure, an authoritative man, and, apparently, with a rather tough will. Became a full lawyer, graduating from special law schools. And so, as a practitioner, he began to earn very good money. He took on the affairs of the poor for free, and for the rich for a fee. And received a good salary.
A. VENEDIKTOV – He possessed eloquence, which means that even then there was competition in the London court …
N. BASOVSKAYA – Rhetoric … The competition is complete, and Mor, as a rule, won. As a result, popularity. In 1504 he was elected to parliament, a member of the House of Commons. It was the last parliament of Henry VII, the first Tudor to go down in history as a tyrant. Well, in any case, everyone who thinks of him like that . .. and all the nobility perceived him that way. He created the famous Star Chamber for the investigation of treason – all this is very similar, so, in Russia, Ivan the Terrible is already on the doorstep, in the year of the death of Henry VIII, Ivan the Terrible becomes tsar. The same methods, the same suppression of all separatism, all protest, the search for conspiracies where they are and where they are not. And in this parliament, Mor took for the first time such a high-state participation in resolving the state issue. Henry VII, with all his authority, the winner of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth – count, tyrant, the Star Chamber, just go there. He asked parliament to approve new subsidies. In connection with the death of his eldest son two years ago, he spent money, and the wedding of his daughter, which has also already taken place. And now, he says, let me reimburse all these costs. Mor showed himself for the first time as a state person – he acted in such a way that the parliament unanimously refused the king in these subsidies. A contemporary wrote: “Some beardless boy upset the whole plan of the king.”
A. VENEDIKTOV – Natalia Basovskaya in the program “That’s right!” We’re talking about Thomas More. At first he was a beardless boy. We find out what happened to him after the news.
NEWS
A. VENEDIKTOV – You are listening to “Echo of Moscow”, this is the program “That’s right!”Natalia Basovskaya and I are talking about Thomas More. Thomas More, Commons, well, a relatively young man, yes, he …
N. BASOVSKAYA – Growing in service.
A. VENEDIKTOV – … he is 26, 27, 28 years old …
N. BASOVSKAYA – Yes. And it grows very quickly in a career sense. Deputy Sheriff … At first he hid for a while, for a year, after the king fought back in parliament, there were fears of reprisals, and he somehow went into the shadows. But he did not stay in the shadows for long. Such people were needed, because the era needed literate, educated people. The merchants were especially in need. This is the bourgeoisie that is being born and growing on its feet. She needed them. But the tyrants also needed it. Now I’ll tell you about his relationship with the king. The tyrant also needed smart people at times, but not forever. And in the end, he again returns to some kind of activity. In 1510 he was sent … he was already a deputy sheriff in London, surrounded by the love and respect of the townspeople. In 1515, as part of the royal embassy, he went to Flanders – an embassy from merchants. Shows himself as a diplomat. Very good, very smart, very peaceful. It settles some trade conflicts with Flanders, and they are connected with the issue of wool – for England the most pressing issue at this time. Moore manages to solve it peacefully and for the benefit of England. In 1518, a very interesting position: Mor – rapporteur of petitions to the king. Great thing.
A.VENEDIKTOV – Access.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Yes.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Access to the royal ear.
N. BASOVSKAYA – And the ability to highlight accents.
A.VENEDIKTOV – Yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – He does not just report that there is a petition. At the same time, he expounds – and the king allows it in these years more … He still …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Henry VIII?
N. BASOVSKAYA – Henry VIII is quite young. Here, let’s step back a little. What connected a humanist like More to a villain like Henry VIII? After all, he remained a villain in history. He chopped off the heads of his wives, chopped off the head of the same Thomas More, ended up with complete tyranny. It is considered the first absolutely established monarch of the absolutist type. An involuntary tautology. But here is the first one who formalized all this. The power of the king is absolute and gradually more and more arbitrary and terrible. What could unite? The fact is that when Henry VII died, and this son of his, Henry VIII, succeeded him in 1509 … Henry VIII was 18 years old. And the hopes that it will not be like that, that the Star Chamber will not continuously shed blood, of course, appeared among the thinking, thinking, humanistic part of society. And Mor wrote an ode to the coronation of Henry VIII and his wife, Queen Catherine of Aragon, for the sake of a divorce from whom he then God knows what he will do in England with the church, etc. There are such lines – a big ode – “This day is the end of slavery, this day is the beginning of freedom, the laws are now glad to find their strength.” Moru is 31 years old. He is naive, well, maybe a little. But not enough to state all this categorically. Apparently, in the spirit of ancient tradition, this program, embedded in an ode, a program for the king. These are mildly expressed advice and wishes. Here, young man, how to rule! And since he is a young man, Mor thinks: it is not useless. And then something even like friendship developed between them for a while. The king promotes him in positions, sends him to all kinds of embassies. True, already in 1523, where Mor had already been the speaker of the House of Commons, and suddenly the king suggested to him – just like in the twentieth century – “shouldn’t you, my friend Thomas, go as the ambassador of England to Spain?”
A. VENEDIKTOV – Central position. Wars.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Well, sending him there, from London, is already a sign that the cooling has begun.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Displeasure, right?
N. BASOVSKAYA – Cooling started. But there was friendship at some point. According to the testimony of his son-in-law, the same Roper, Heinrich even sometimes drove into Chelsea – not the London area, and then a village on the Thames beyond London – to Mora’s house. A decent house – not a palace, but a good house. The king dined and walked in the garden, as Roper writes, “hugging Mora by the neck.” Well, maybe Mor fell into some kind of seduction? No. He told Roper: “I understand, with all these hugs, that if anything, he will take this very head off his neck, if he only sees . ..”
A.VENEDIKTOV – What happened in the end.
N. BASOVSKAYA – He foresaw. He, in general, understood it. And yet he served. And in 1529 he became Lord Chancellor. So maybe he’s naive? So maybe, really, after all, in Utopia, he seriously dreams of egalitarian communism? I do not think. When appointed, he spoke in response. And it contains the following words: “If it were not for the king’s mercy — without these phrases it is impossible in those days — I would consider my place as pleasant as Damocles was pleased with the sword hanging over his head.”Let me remind you that Damocles is the favorite of a certain Syracuse tyrant, Dionysius the Elder, in the 5th – 4th centuries BC. I envied the tyrant. Even though he is a favorite, but still, that’s how good it is …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Well, it’s dangerous to be near tyrants.
N. BASOVSKAYA – And once he stated, “How good it is for you, how wonderful it is that you are the first.” And the tyrant made such an antique joke: for one day he gave him everything – his throne, his palace, at the feast he sat on the throne. And he already began to enjoy himself completely, this Damocles, how wonderful. He raised his eyes by chance and saw that a double-edged sword hung over his head, suspended by a horse’s hair. As always, in ancient anecdotes there is some kind of figurativeness, metaphor. And immediately got sick. I thanked Dionysius for this opportunity. Has ceased to envy forever. Mor in this, in his reply, said how much he understands that this place is not a joy, not a sinecure, but a terrible danger. But was he still hoping to raise Henry VIII? And why did he even hope? Naivety, which can be said today, but then it is the norm of humanistic thinking.Henry VIII was well educated. And it seemed to this humanistic circle of people that education protects a person from immorality for good. Maybe it protects a little bit, but we already know well that it is unreliable and not forever. The longer a person has power, the weaker this protection becomes. And Mor, apparently, still believed.
A. VENEDIKTOV – At the same time . .. at the same time, Mora is appointed chancellor. Well, practically, the second person in the country.
N. BASOVSKAYA – First Minister.First Minister.
A. VENEDIKTOV – First Minister, right? King and then Lord Chancellor.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Yes. No longer a speaker of petitions, but already a person who keeps a large state seal, who takes part in the discussion of all important issues. Why would Heinrich? Such was by this time Mohr’s moral authority in Europe – in Holland, in Germany …
A. VENEDIKTOV – i.e. not only in England?
N. BASOVSKAYA – No. In Holland, in Germany, in Italy, he was known by a circle of the most famous and thinking people.Well, Erasmus of Rotterdam is number one, Peter Egidius, the outstanding Dutch humanist, who is the translator of Aesop, etc. – people like that.
A. VENEDIKTOV – He was known at the royal courts! Important.
N. BASOVSKAYA – And they are still at the courts.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – And it is important for him that such a person with such authority is with him. And he probably hoped to turn Thomas More into his obedient obedient instrument. But this turned out to be in no way possible.
A. VENEDIKTOV – I just want to remind you that already at that time Henry began a story with a divorce. Even before the appointment of Thomas More …
N. BASOVSKAYA – Yes.
A. VENEDIKTOV – For two years. Heinrich turned to Thomas More with a request to give an opinion on the possibility of a divorce from Queen Catherine of Aragon. Although they had children – they had a daughter, Maria.
N. BASOVSKAYA – There was a legal marriage …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes.
N.BASOVSKAYA – In the bosom of the Catholic Church. And Henry VIII could count on the permission of the pope – more than once the pope gave such permission …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – . .. in the Middle Ages, but here they had a bad relationship, and dad rested. There was a lot involved – the interests of the empire, etc. He turned, among other things, to leading universities – there, such as Bologna, several German universities – and gave a lot of money so that they could give an academic conclusion, which is possible.Dali.
A. VENEDIKTOV – You can.
N. BASOVSKAYA – You can. It was done for money. But Mor, it turned out, is not for sale. Lands from the king, some small holdings, he received, the means to support the family were excellent, the family Thomas More adored. His first wife died very young, whom he adored, and, one might say, raised himself – and educated, he believed that a woman should not be limited to the kitchen. He married a second time, as is known, contemporaries write, to a woman who is clearly not young and not beautiful, but always said: “She is young, beautiful, beautiful.”And she felt like this … and they began to see her like that. Holbein also painted her portrait – here he said: yes, not young and ugly. But through the mouth of Mora, he made her like that. As a result, she loved her step children in the most tender way and raised them. And there was harmony, peace, love in the house. The eldest daughter, Margarita, whose face was also captured by the artists of this era – a beautiful face – was a young lady who understood him, who shared his views, and who almost died on the day of Mora’s execution, because it was, of course, for her the highest test.So that such a person with his moral authority overshadowed the deeds of Henry VIII. Well, what are the deeds? First of all, let me remind you that this was the time of the so-called fencing, the mass drive of peasants from the land – the emerging capitalism brutally acted against the peasants, turning many of their lands into pastures. And Mora in “Utopia” it sounds: “they say our peaceful sheep have become so predatory that they devour people.” In this sense. Many people were torn off the ground. Where will a man cut off from the earth go in the 16th century? There are no factories for which he will be hired yet, there are not so many factories, and now, the roads are filled with vagabonds …
A.VENEDIKTOV – Robbers.
N. BASOVSKAYA – … robbers, thieves … more beggars. Hanged under Henry VIII … they are hung. There were …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Well, the law against vagrancy was passed there.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Several. Bloody legislation.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Bloody laws, yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – 72 thousand people, according to experts. Well, it’s even hard for us to imagine it. Those. bloody, terrible time. And next to him – this is such a bright figure, which everyone writes about, what he is. And so that she would support the person who inspires all these hangings, approves of his laws – not primitive, not simple, not straightforward, but permits these bloody laws. A completely contradictory situation. But the king is counting. Have you bought universities? Mora cannot be bought. Intimidate. They begin to … let him know that it will cost him dearly. What did Henry VIII come up with – since the pope does not allow divorce … that he was so stuck in this divorce? Purely humanly, this is the very consciousness of permissiveness.I can do anything. I decided that nothing could stop me. Ah, since Daddy got stuck, let’s abolish Daddy. It is, in essence, the famous act of supremacy – this is the abolition of the spiritual authority of the papacy over England and the transformation of the king into the supreme leader of the church instead of the pope. This is how the Anglican Church was born. In fact, many wanted to get rid of the papal power, and whoever could get rid of it. Or maybe … in theory, the humanists should have rejoiced – well, the papal authority is so terrible. But they did not support the Reformation, in fact nobody. They saw a little further, saw and felt. They saw … they criticized the clergy. Erasmus in “Praise of Folly” wrote who the Catholic priests are. They condemned them morally. More condemned too. But what is replacing them – Luther, Calvin and their supporters – a new fanaticism, irreconcilable, cruel, narrow-minded, sectarian. And therefore, they did not see the point of supporting this, the moral sense. And the development of capitalism, the ideas of free will, which were important for the enterprising bourgeoisie – they still did not understand this much. Therefore, Mohr’s position was purely moral. He was not a religious fanatic, but the idea that, once having sworn an oath, in this case, to the Catholic Church, one should not change his position. This is the first thing. And second: having sworn allegiance to this new arrangement of the church, he sanctioned – he understood this well – the confiscation of the monastic lands … it seems to be great too – why should the priests be so rich? But there are people on the lands! And these crowds of executed beggars, they will increase even more. He understands this. And in this situation, he takes an irreconcilable position: I will not support! And the king needs it. And he even shows a kind of patience. Mora is not immediately put under such desperate pressure.
A. VENEDIKTOV – After all, he was Lord Chancellor for almost three years.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Of course. This is a lot even for such a person. And “Utopia” was very famous, indeed, its epigrams, poems, ode, once hugged by the neck … Ie. Henry VIII here was not so decisive and quick in his actions, he was very pushed by his secretary Thomas Cromwell – not the future leader of the revolution, in no case, a completely different person.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Relative. But a relative.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Yes. But not direct, not close.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes, not close.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Yes. Thomas Cromwell was very pushing, intriguing, jealous of Thomas More, to be closer to the king. My God, he outlived Thomas More then by only 5 years. Not so much. And exactly the same fate befell him. So, it is clear, since he did not support him, he is doomed.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Well, he resigns himself, we must honestly admit, when the English clergy swore allegiance to the king as the head of the church. And the next day, referring to ill health, Thomas More …
N. BASOVSKAYA – May 15, 1532 …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – The meeting of the English clergy said yes. Nobody went martyrdom except Thomas More.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Well, he just resigned, well, wait, what kind of martyrs? He just resigned …
N. BASOVSKAYA – He knew that this was the end, no, he knew …
A. VENEDIKTOV – I don’t think, I don’t think, for him …
N.BASOVSKAYA – In the sources …
A. VENEDIKTOV – No, no.
N. BASOVSKAYA – He said: “Postponing the case does not mean canceling it.”
A. VENEDIKTOV – But nevertheless, look: he resigns, he is not touched …
N. BASOVSKAYA – Passed the seal.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Passed the seal. Yes, I passed the seal.
A. VENEDIKTOV – He went to Chelsea there, and stayed at home, but he also throws the next challenge to the king: he does not appear at the coronation of the new queen. It’s a challenge.
N. BASOVSKAYA – He could not. On July 1, 1533, he did not attend Anne Boleyn’s coronation.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – How could he come? He refused … in general, he immediately foresaw, when he found out that these acts were adopted by the clergy, he said: “God forbid, now they will begin to demand an oath of allegiance from all to these acts.” Well, take the oath. He knew he couldn’t. Yes, of course, the fact that he did not come to the coronation is a demonstration. That … further demanded to swear allegiance to the new act of the king.Everyone here was so animated – act by act. Well, a coup, a spiritual coup.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Almost a coup, yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Of course. A huge spiritual revolution. Act of Succession. Very interesting. With this act, due to the fact that the divorce from Catherine of Aragon took place, the daughter of Catherine, Mary, who will go down in history with the nickname Bloody …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Bloody, yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Nobody knows this yet.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Queen of England, Mary the Bloody.
N. BASOVSKAYA – She will return the Catholic faith, try to return. Daughter Maria is recognized as illegitimate, and Elizabeth, who was just born from Anne Boleyn …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Future Elizabeth the Great I.
N. BASOVSKAYA – The future Elizabeth I the Great must be recognized as the legal heir to the throne. And now More, Thomas More – well, what does it seem to him to care? Maria, Elizabeth, divorces … well, falter! This is his famous “battle won”.With myself. I can not! This is immoral. It’s not about who will be on the throne. You can’t change your beliefs by order of the king, you can’t like the whole meeting of the leaders of the church . .. They resisted at first, for several days.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Well, of course, yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – We argued with the king.
A. VENEDIKTOV – This is understandable.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Someone must accept martyrdom. He understood that he was accepting it. Step by step. “God forbid, he says, an oath.”Yes, they demanded an oath. And when he was summoned to come to the palace to take the oath of the deed of succession to the throne, this was the end. One of his enemies remarkably testified how he behaved during this first interrogation in connection with his refusal to swear that one day there would be Elizabeth – a little, baby. The court recorded that he was accused of treason, because he does not swear …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Well, of course, in treason.
N. BASOVSKAYA – And in response, Thomas More, I quote, “maliciously and criminally” was silent.Stunning formulations that, in general, show that …
A. VENEDIKTOV – They remind us of the 30s of our history, yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – … that little changes in the moral history of mankind when it is associated with power and politics.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Natalya Ivanovna Basovskaya. We still have four minutes, Natalya Ivanovna. Still … he was imprisoned in the Tower …
N. BASOVSKAYA – Served 15 months.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Yes, he was in prison for 15 months.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Without trial.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Well, what kind of courts? …
N. BASOVSKAYA – Then there was a formal trial – he did it maliciously, at the first interrogation he was maliciously and criminally silent.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Silent.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Then they formalized all this as a court verdict …
A. VENEDIKTOV – Treason.
N. BASOVSKAYA – The verdict was incredible. What was treason? The one who refused to swear by the act that the king is now the first leader of the church, and that now the succession to the throne is like this, he is, therefore, a traitor. I must say that Henry VIII himself, after all, was, of course, a living person, both in the sense of his passions with his wives, and in others. There was a moment when he thought he was dying. And he suddenly staggered back to the Catholic Church. He ordered to return the main rituals, to follow these rituals, he was afraid of the Last Judgment. Those. and here he was shaken, as with his wives. And when this wild, monstrous execution of More took place – they cut off his head, and the verdict was even more terrible, it is even impossible to retell it – Henry had breakfast with Anne Boleyn – she, too, would be cut off – a messenger came and said: “Thomas More has been executed.”Heinrich, well, something … jumped up from the table – he really loved to eat, ate a lot, ate a lot, all sorts of delicious dishes – broke away from his favorite occupation and said irritably to Anne Boleyn: “It’s all because of you.” Maybe her future misfortunes began here. There is no need to sacrifice such personalities to your personal passions, people of such magnitude as Thomas More.
A.VENEDIKTOV – I just want to say that already in the Tower – some of them, by the way, wrote in coal, because his writing materials were taken away from him – he wrote, or rather, finished “Treatise on the Passions”, meaning, of course , about the passion of Christ.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Of course.
A. VENEDIKTOV – But he also composed the “Dialogue on Consolation in the Middle of Adversity” there, in the Tower.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Following …
A. VENEDIKTOV – I worked, I worked!
N. BASOVSKAYA – Following Boethius. These people, this humanistic circle, directly followed ancient ideals and traditions. When Boethius, imprisoned by King Theodoric, King of Lombard, in a dungeon with a death sentence, awaited this execution, he wrote an amazing work: “Consolation in Philosophy.”And Mor, most likely, directly followed, in this case, the antique model.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Well, it’s easy to say now when a person is sitting in a cell and realizes that a terrible death awaits him – and death was . .. should have been really very painful, according to the court’s verdict …
N. BASOVSKAYA – At first it was something impossible.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Well, to please the king – why not?
N. BASOVSKAYA – Remove from the loop half-dead, cut the belly …
A.VENEDIKTOV – … pull out the guts …
N. BASOVSKAYA – Well, it’s impossible to retell.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Here, but the most interesting and the last thing I want to say is, perhaps, that he is a saint. He is declared a saint by the Catholic Church. But when? In 1935. 400 years have passed.
N. BASOVSKAYA – I think this is due to the fact that, in general, around the Reformation, the Catholic Church of people at least somehow connected with the Reformation was very difficult to make all kinds of decisions. It was easier to canonize Saint Louis IX …
A.VENEDIKTOV – Yes, yes, yes.
N. BASOVSKAYA – Because the Crusades, everything, as it were, is simple and clear. And this is an era of great confusion.
A. VENEDIKTOV – Natalia Basovskaya. Thank you very much, Natalya Ivanovna, goodbye!
N. BASOVSKAYA – Goodbye!
The Eternal City – Factions TOTAL WAR: ROME 2 and AARs
63-67 reign of Uniev.
D The Roman legions of Africa and Carthage, after a long and exhausting march, came to the last oasis on the way to Dimmidia. The Roman spies conducted a surface reconnaissance. It turned out that the Masasils had assembled as many as three armies, 12-16 detachments in each, to defend their last city. The striking force of the barbarians was the Numidian spear throwers and spearmen, but there were also elite units of heavy infantry, archers and various cavalry.
L The legionnaires were tired, exhausted by the long journey across the desert, and their morale dropped. Some maniples were incomplete in composition – the high mortality rate in difficult natural conditions affected. In terms of the number of soldiers, the Roman legions were almost three times inferior to the Masasils.
P ubli Sever and his older brother Spurius convened an improvised council of war, at which they decided whether they should begin the assault immediately, or postpone the attack. Before the council had begun, shrieks and the clang of weapons rang out outside the podium of the tribune. The Masasils treacherously attacked the Roman camp.
In conditions of the overwhelming superiority of the enemy, the brave Romans decided not to join the battle – and the legions retreated to the southeast, along the same road they had taken. (Approx. Auth. In this episode I used the control point to my advantage – I took the troops to the nearest edge of the map, putting up a small barrier from the velites. The enemy marched in three waves – according to the number of armies that participated in the battles. When the fastest spear throwers reached the control point and captured it – the battle ended, none of the sides suffered losses) .
In , as a result, the Roman legions returned to the border of the possessions of the Republic and Masasilia. The troops camped awaiting the arrival of the III Legion under the command of a Julian family representative from Carthage.Along the way, fresh recruits entered the maniples, replacing those who fell in the sands of the desert ..
Political map of the Roman Republic during the middle of the “Great African Massacre”.
]]>]]>]]>]]>
By the end of 64, on a forced march, Julia’s III Legion invaded the Masasil possessions along the eastern road. Simultaneously, one after another, the Legions of Publius and Spurius advanced. They walked along the road leading to Dammidia from the south.Connecting at the intersection of the roads, the Roman army continued to move north. At the end of 65, all three legions camped in the very oasis from which Publius and Spurius were forced to retreat in 62. There was a slight lull. The Romans sharpened gladiuses and prepared pilums for battle, the barbarians waited cautiously, encircling their last city with a dense ring.
P on the estimates of the spies, the Roman army of 3600 people was opposed by over 6000 soldiers and mercenaries of Masasilia. The Roman generals focused on heavy infantry in the form of the Gastats, legionnaires and veterans, supported by a small number of horsemen and velites. Each legion had its own “special” units. II African, under the leadership of Publius Valerius Severus, was strengthened by the centuria of the “first cohort” – the most elite legionnaires at the moment. Spurius Sever, during a forced waiting on the border with Tsidamus, agreed with one of the Punnic leaders, and hired a detachment of war elephants. In the III Legion, led by a representative of the House of Julia, since the time of the war with the Etruscans, an experienced detachment has survived, which had fighting dogs as assistants.
N At the turn of 65-66, the insidious Masasils sent an infiltrator to Publius Sever. Having crept into the tent of the tribune at night, the spy put poison into a goblet of wine. The most outstanding commander of the Roman Republic (at the age of 24) was incapacitated for a long time … Taking advantage of the confusion in the enemy camp, one of Masasilia’s armies bypassed the Roman legions through the desert and quickly marched to Tsidamus. Tsidamus was defenseless …
Summer 66 from the beginning of the reign of the Junies.
———————————————– Memoirs of the veteran warrior Guy Septius.
At that memorable morning we were all awakened by the wild cry of a young soldier from the hastats.
– The tribune was killed! – he shouted, running past the tents and tents, – get up, brothers, they killed the tribune!
M we all ran out. Despite the early morning, the sun was already high. As soon as I was out in the open, the heat of the African desert instantly bent my old bones into a bull’s horn. A large crowd of worried legionnaires had already gathered around the tent of Publius Valerius Severus. They were all in full combat gear. Black sultans of raven feathers set off the brilliance of many metal helmets.
N Finally, Publius’s older brother, Spurius, came out to the public. He made a short but clear speech.
– Warriors of Great Rome! Our beloved and respected by all Publius Valery survived!
T The olpa roared with joy. Armor clanked, gladius knocked on shields. Spurius waited for the expression of delight to subside. Then he continued.
– But the insidious poisoner caused serious harm to his health. The doctor fears that he will not recover from the poison and its consequences very soon.
P a displeased murmur went to the ranks of the legionnaires.
– Warriors! By the will of our Gods, by the will of Mars himself and the heirs of his power on earth – the Great House of Junias, we are ordered to defeat the vile barbarians-Masasils, and take possession of Dimmidia! Our tribune will not be with us in this battle in body, but his spirit will be with us. He trusts in each of you, hopes that no one will shame the Roman glory! You can’t hesitate any longer! Enough to rot in this Hades – desert! Long-awaited rest in Dimmidia! Cool! Wine! Women! Slaves!
N and we decided on that. The soldiers of the II African Legion quickly chose a temporary tribune for themselves – some unknown centurion from the Cornelian clan. In the ranks, of course, it was whispered that Publius’s injury was a bad omen. They feared that the new commander would poorly lead the battle. We were worried about how the division of the spoils would take place after the battle. After all, Publius knew many veterans by sight, and could justly distinguish them before the soldiers of the rest of the legions. Who is this Cornelius? What if he took all the spoils of the Legion for himself? In general, it is unclear and vague. Why are we going to die? And for whom?
L The regions quickly closed their camps. News came that the Third Legion, led by Julius, was returning to Tsidamus to pursue the Masasil army that had escaped from the encirclement. We moved towards the city.
H In a few hours of travel, we encountered two Negro armies, which had left Dimmidia to cut us off. One of them stood in a lowland, in a kind of cauldron, surrounded by huge dunes. The second hurried to her aid from the east.
By , the Arphagen Legion was advancing directly into the cauldron, but it was far away. The closest to each other were our legion and the second army of the Masasils. Cornelius ordered the pursuit of this army. He wanted to kill the blacks separately, preventing the formation of a continuous front.
N Umidi soldiers fled briskly. Two detachments of our horsemen rushed forward. As I understand it, they hoped to beat the enemy spear throwers, to start a battle before the infantry arrived. However, nothing came of this venture – pikemen walked close behind the spear throwers, and elite heavy infantry, recruited from aristocrats, covered the Masasils from the rear. Our legionaries ran too slowly.
Dislocation of the opposing armies before the general battle
]]>]]>
N Finally, the two enemy armies united in the lowland, and ours stood at the edges of the dunes on both sides, forming a kind of corner. The horn sounded, and we rushed to the attack. The velites were the first to enter the battle. Safety darts with juicy squals entered the blacks of the bodies, igniting the nearby barbarians. The Numidian spear throwers responded by hurling a barrage of mines at the velites. A few seconds later, our cavalry cut into the elongated flanks of the Masasil skirmishers. The legionnaires, as always, breathing hard and stamping with kaligami, were late in the thick of events.
N and the spearmen hit the support of the spearmen from the second line and a noble mess was formed. The silence of the desert was filled with the roar of armor, the clang of weapons and the screams of the dying.
