Photography Summer Camps 2022 for Teens NYC & LA

The Hurrell

After completing a “Headshot Workshop,” including a creative portraiture and natural lighting lesson, photographers will be paired up with students from the SOCAPA acting program to create professional studio headshots, portraits, and action photographs. Students will gain a basic knowledge of studio set-up, learning to control strobe lighting using equipment such as soft boxes and grids, creating a “drop-out white” background for professional headshots, and lighting subjects for dramatic, creative portraits. Photographers will gain the valuable skills needed to successfully direct photo subjects while experiencing the excitement of working in a professional studio environment. This project takes its name from George Hurrell, the famous Golden Age Hollywood MGM photographer.

The Cartier-Bresson

Guided by lessons on composition, street photography and techniques for safely and confidently approaching subjects, students will take to the streets, capturing candid portraits, human interactions, architectural street scenes, and urban details. This assignment takes its name from Henri Cartier-Bresson, an early 20th century master of street photography and father of photojournalism, who coined the expression the “decisive moment.” Practice of the “decisive moment” encourages students to capture that fleeting creative instant in which everything in the frame comes together to create the best possible image. Through this exercise, students will build an awareness of framing, light, color, form, line, and pattern and will learn to make a multitude of aesthetic choices, to create technically strong and emotionally engaging compositions.

The Sherman

Students in the two week program will have the opportunity to create a series of creative self-portraits. Students will be encouraged to think outside the box, discovering what they want to say about themselves and translating this into images using in-camera techniques, costumes, props, lighting and/or Photoshop compositing. In addition to practicing the creative controls of shutter speed and depth of field, students will learn to work with self timers, tripods and manual focus. This project will stress the importance of conceptualization, metaphor, symbolism and self-expression, teaching from the work of photographers such as Cindy Sherman, Nikki S. Lee, Gillian Wearing, and Andy Warhol.

Explore the many facets of visual art and photography through traditional techniques as well as digital technology. These enriching and inclusive weekly summer camps and programs are presented in collaboration with George Mason University’s School of Art. Young children and teens ages 6 – 18 will have the opportunity to learn from university professors and professional teaching artists in the same classroom spaces where the college students learn and create their art!  These programs will focus on both artistry and skill building with other like-minded young artists.

In-Person & Online Options
Our in-person programs have a reduced capacity, and classrooms will be reserved to host one unique program per space. For those who may not be ready to return to in-person programming, we will have a variety of online options available. Our online programs include a mix of live-streamed interactive classes, individualized and group activities, and enriching video resources.

When I was a kid I always had a camera in my hand. I didn’t know then that photography was a career. Heck, the internet had yet to even be invented. But I would spend hours styling the wardrobe of my sister and my cousins, and then pose them in various scenes to take their photos. I loved every minute of fiddling with a camera.

It continued on in much this way until I finally got to high school and started taking actual classes. By that point my father realized something was going to stick and he built me a dark room in our house. I spent hours in that little room developing film and making prints. I had no idea that photography would become the cornerstone of my entire life just a handful of years later!

I’ve spent a lot of time this year trying to really level up my photography skills. There are a lot of things I’ve wanted to learn and practice that I’ve been too busy to tackle in recent years, and this year I made it a priority. It might just be the first New Year’s resolution I’ve ever kept! I am so passionate about constantly learning, practicing and pushing myself that it has been truly rewarding to spend so much time this year immersed in something that has always brought me such joy. 

Along the way I decided that I wanted to host a photography summer camp! A camp for kids like the kid I once was. Creative, passionate and curious. Kids who maybe could care less about soccer camp, but that would get really excited to spend a few days exploring and taking photos.

I mulled it over and over before finally tossing it out on there on my personal Facebook page to my local friends. The response was overwhelmingly positive so I teamed up with Brother to throw one seriously cool summer camp!

Last month I hosted a 3-day summer camp right here at my HQ. I packed the house full of kids and snacks and spent hours working with them on composition and lighting, encouraging them to play with new ideas and techniques. I also taught them some phone photography tricks and gave them a crash course on my favorite editing apps.

On the second day we went out exploring throughout our local downtown, meeting with vendors at our local farmer’s market and finding cool brick walls and graffiti to photograph. We wrapped up camp on day three by printing loads of photos using the INKvestment Tank MFC-J5945DW. The kids loved having a chance to pick out and print their own photos and to see their work come to life!

To cap it all off, we fashioned their photos into cool wall hangings and used the P-touch Embellish Ribbon + Tape Printer to create unique captions for their work. I am obsessed with the colorful patterned washi tapes you can get for the P-touch, which combined with all of the font and symbol options allowed the kids to add a scrapbook like quality to their work. (The P-touch also prints on all kinds of tapes and ribbons. Mine has become a mainstay over the last couple years in my every day life from organizational projects to crafting. Love. This. Thing.)

It was insanely rewarding to spend time with these kids and to see something spark inside of each of them. Knowing that they’re all curious, eager and interested in continuing to learn more about something that has truly transformed my life is unbelievably meaningful. The thrill of seeing a young kid grasp a concept, gain confidence and go home to share that joy with their parents is kind of amazing.

Here are just a few of the photos the kids took during camp! It was amazing to see how quickly they picked up on concepts and start playing around with new angles, ideas and lighting. 

Aren’t these great?! Many of these were taken as part of the photo scavenger hunt that I challenged the kids with, which you can find a copy of below if you’re interested in a fun little activity for your kids or even yourself! I wanted to see how far they could push it out of the box with their new skills while trying to take as many photos as possible. They totally blew me away.

The first kid to follow up with me after camp with a completed scavenger hunt (with photo evidence, of course) won a new P-touch Embellish Ribbon + Tape Printer of their very own! They had so much fun playing with the P-touch during camp week that they were chomping at the bit to finish first and win.

By far photo camp has been the highlight of my summer. I am so grateful for this opportunity to share something I love so much with another generation of kids. Virtual Photography Camp

For campers entering grades 6 – 12

Aspiring photographers of all levels are invited to join portrait photographer Aubrey Edwards for a hands-on program designed to develop the skills needed to capture awe-inspiring images.  While camp interactions will occur on Google Meet, photoshoot assignments will require lots of offline engagement and exploration. Small groups ensure that all campers will get lots of attention and individual instruction. Campers will leave with a portfolio of edited work that will be celebrated in an exhibition on the Ogden Museum’s website. Photography campers may use any type of digital camera (including phone cameras). Before camp begins, families will be emailed a link to the class website and a link to the Google Meet live classroom.

During Virtual Photography Camp, students will:

As your camera flashes away with dozens of camper photos, you can’t help but wonder: Are these photos good enough for the camp AND will the campers and their families love them? Do I have enough energy to last the day? Am I capturing most of the campers?

Being a camp photographer is a tough job — the days are long, you’re constantly on your feet, you cover lots of ground and you have to keep your energy up. It’s a big responsibility. Your photos form the face of the camp on social media, and you are in many ways the window into the camper’s experience for parents. They look to you to capture their camper and provide them the glimpse they are looking for into their camper’s experience. On top of that, your photos also form the memorabilia campers will cherish for the years to come.

Nailing your camp photography methods down early will improve the quality of the photos you capture. You want campers to see you as a “counselor with a camera.” Building trust with the campers is going to make for better photos. 

Producing high-quality photos ensures you build a great portfolio for yourself, but more importantly, you help contribute to the camp’s brand image online too. This, in turn, generates marketing value for your camp — higher quality photos means a higher likelihood to be shared by campers and parents online. However, it’ll be challenging to keep up your quality and still capture the number of photos needed per day in order to cover most of the campers.

That said, here are 10 tips all camp photographers should take note of to improve their photography work at summer camps.

10 Tips Camp Photographers Need to Know to Deliver Effective Photography

1. Have a Plan

Perhaps the biggest challenge to camp photography is making sure you’ve captured photos of each individual camper. Since early photos can be some of the most important photos for settling the nerves of first-time parents, one way to address this is to implement an Opening Day photo-op for campers. Something such as snapping a photo of each camper with the camp director will help you get a photo of each individual camper within a 3-4 hour timespan. As an added bonus, you captured all those photos without having to run around camp all day.

Another way to plan ahead is to pinpoint the activities that would have the most campers in attendance and snap photos there. This will increase your odds of snapping photos of most of the campers. During rest hours, you can check which categories of campers you’ve captured well and where you may have gaps. It’s impossible to know if you’ve got every camper, but having categories will help get you closer to that goal. Use cabin sheets to cross off names and see who you missed.

2. Don’t be afraid to supplement with phones

We get it, you’re cringing right now at the thought of photos taken via a smartphone. While perfectly edited professional photos are great, the reality is that parents would rather see imperfect photos of their kids than get no photos at all.

Recruit the help of directors and counselors to snap photos of the campers throughout the day, and compile it into a shared gallery at the end of the day. This is yet another way to ensure you’re getting photos of each camper, which, once again, leads to happy parents. You can cull the blinks and blurries but you’ll still end up with some extra shots which are valuable.

With Waldo’s shared galleries, it is easy to get everyone contributing to the same gallery or album. Within a few clicks, invites can be sent to every counselor to contribute their photos. These photos can go into “require review” where you can curate those you feel are good for publishing.

3. Have a plan for your day off

While it may be tempting to be the “super-photog” and take photos all day, every day, the truth is that you’re going to need a break. Running around taking photos all day is hard work, and you need rest in order to revitalize and get back to snapping all those awesome shots. 

Communication is your best friend when it comes to your days off. If they are planned ahead of time, you can let parents know which specific days of camp they can expect that there will not be as many photos coming. This way, parents already know what to expect and will not worry or wonder when they aren’t receiving as many photos that day. 

You can also recruit other camp staff who are interested in photography to either snap extra photos on their phones that day or even use your camera if they’re savvy enough to.

4. Dealing with night events

Some of the most cherished photos come from dances and other nighttime events at camp. Nothing melts a momma’s heart like their kid’s 1st dance. 

Of course, those low lighting conditions mean it’s harder to capture photos that look good. This is where a nice external flash is going to come in handy. You can find them for $100-150, and they are well worth the investment. In addition, having an 18-200mm lens will help ensure that you get good quality photos in whatever environment you’re in. 

Hint: It’s ok to buy used when it comes to photography equipment; in fact, it’s actually smart to do so because of the depreciation!

5. Watch for “camper signals”

You may not realize this, but campers are communicating with their parents in every photo you take of them. For example, a thumbs-up is a pretty common way to tell Mom and Dad “I feel safe and I’m having a good time!” However, what if you noticed one smiling camper was consistently using a different hand signal (holding a certain number of fingers up, for instance)? This can be a way for them to communicate distress to their parents.  

While you may not get a parent phone call based on that photo, not noticing and addressing the potential distress diligently may mean not seeing that camper returning next summer. By noticing camper signals, you can be proactive in talking to the camper or parents about potential issues. 

6. Always capture smiles… even in the background.

Sure, it’s pretty obvious that the campers in the foreground of your photo should be smiling, but be sure to check that the background campers are having a good time as well. If smiling is an issue for your campers, come up with incentives for them to smile. Competitions and prizes that encourage and reward their enthusiasm will help you get those pearly whites on camera. 

Best case scenario: Waldo’s facial recognition picks up a camper’s smiling face in the background and delivers it through mobile instantly to their parent, and bam — you have another delighted parent!

7. Don’t keep every photo you take

This might sound pretty obvious, but you’re going to have a ton of photos by the end of each day — not every photo is going to be worthy of publishing. If you like to run your photos through a program like Lightroom for post-processing, you can rate them there and cull out the weakest ones. 

Another excellent alternative: you can send them to Require Review on Waldo, curate them there before publishing, and mark the best ones as Highlights. These will show up in a highlight reel in the app, giving parents a condensed view of the day via the 20 – 30 best photos. They’ll love you for it and it makes the camp look great. These highlights are also marketing gold once the season is over.

8. Group photos are a must

We don’t recommend setting yourself up for failure with the unreasonable task of getting individual photos of each camper every day. Socializing at camp is a key part of a camper’s experience so you should capture it. One easy method to help you get photos of all campers is to use lunch breaks to snap photos of each cabin enjoying their meal together.

9. Reassure parents with photos

Parents want to know that they’re leaving their kids in the care of safe, friendly counselors. When you capture photos of campers smiling with their counselors, this helps send that message to parents. 

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you only do this for younger or newer campers; it’s equally important for the return campers and teenagers as well. Parents always want to know that their kids are in good hands, no matter the age of the camper. 

These endearing moments when their child is being loved and cared for by a counselor are priceless moments.

10. Upload daily

& track your coverage (+ storage tips!)

To maximize the value of your photography online, you should upload your photos daily as parents will post them more frequently. These posts provide significant marketing value for your camp, as like-minded families are connected to your current families online. 

Many camps begrudge the pressure of taking lots of photos and posting them every day. However, we encourage you to embrace this as your #1 marketing method. It may feel like your parents have unreasonable expectations, but give them what they crave — and they will become an unpaid social marketing army for you. 

Services like Waldo will add your brand filter to every photo and auto-hash your parent’s Facebook post with your camp’s hashtag. You can also use services like Waldo to track the number of photos taken of each camper. This allows you to smooth out the coverage across your campers and ensure your families have plenty of photos to post!

When it comes to storage, do not rely on your computer’s hard drive to do all that heavy lifting. We recommend you use external hard drives to store your photos; a 1 TB hard drive will last for 2-3 years worth of camps. Using external hard drives will also keep you from running into storage issues that affect your computer’s software. 

On top of that, getting your photos saved in cloud storages adds another safety net to your photography collection. Some services like Waldo will store multiple years worth of photos for free. Make sure you use high-quality cloud photo storage solutions like Waldo so that your photos are stored redundantly and safely, without incurring additional storage costs. 

With both ways, you have an additional archive in case your computer’s hard drive were to crash. Photos are so valuable to both your families and camp marketing, so you’d definitely want to protect all your hard work.

26.06. – “Farewell Day”.
So our school camp “Planets of Hope and Good” has come to an end.
Counselors posted information on the stand every day. The first place in terms of the number of planetarics was taken by the 3rd detachment. All children received sweet prizes. The season ended with the performance of the vocal group “Rhythm”, the head of S. Ivantsova. Happy and contented children went home, together with their families to continue to relax, sunbathe, gain strength for the new school year.

25.06 – “Day of candy wrappers”.

The twentieth day of the “Planets of Hope and Good” school camp has passed.The penultimate day in the camp was as exciting as the previous ones. Detachments 2, 3, 6 bought in the Neptune pool, and detachment 1 visited the Drama Theater, where they plunged into theatrical fantasy based on the oriental tales of the “1001st Night” “Aladdin”. After attending the events, all the children were very happy.

24.06. – “Poet’s Day”.
The nineteenth day of the “Planets of Hope and Good” school camp has passed. Our detachments began their morning with exercises, after which they went to the dining room for breakfast.Today 2, 3, 4 teams went to the children’s libraries to see the programs prepared for them, and the 1st and 6th teams watched “Bender” at the “Edem” cinema. After lunch, our young poets prepared their poems for a performance, for which they received sweet prizes.

23.06 – “Day of the heroes of fairy tales.”

The eighteenth day has passed at the school camp “Planets of Hope and Good”. Our detachments traditionally began the morning with exercises. After breakfast, the 6th squad went to the IEC for the show of shadows “Puss in Boots”, the 1st and 2nd squads visited the trampark with an on-site excursion around the city, the rest of the squads went to the children’s library for the literary and entertaining game “Basket of delicious riddles”.Upon returning from the events, the children received a delicious lunch, after which the detachments took part in a quest on the knowledge of traffic rules. The victory in the quest was won by the 2nd squad.

22.06. – Visiting Svetoforik.

The seventeenth day of the school camp “Planets of Hope and Good” has passed. The morning began with a vigorous exercise, after which all the detachments went to the dining room for a portion of wholesome porridge. The new day was filled with different activities and emotions.Detachments 2 and 3 visited the Edem cinema on the cartoon Luka, detachments 4 and 6 in the Aquaform pool, detachment 1 in the children’s library. After visiting the library, detachment 1 went to Victory Park, where the teachers reminded the children about the heroes of the Soviet Union of the Great Patriotic War. After lunch, all the detachments gathered for the event “War. Victory!”. The squad winners were awarded with diplomas and sweet prizes.

21.06 – “Day of the Olympians”.

The seventeenth day of the school camp “Planets of Hope and Good” has passed. On this day, the 2nd and 3rd teams visited the Krasnoyarsk Regional Philharmonic Society, where they watched the musical performance “My Imagination”. 1, 4 and 5 teams went to the swimming pool “Neptune”. And the 6th squad went to the Eden cinema to watch the Luka cartoon. After lunch, all the squads took part in the “Comic Olympics”, as a result of the competition, 1 squad won.

19.06 – “Healthy lifestyle day”.

The sixteenth day of the “Planets of Hope and Good” school camp is over. On this day, two squads 1 and 5 went to the Aquaform pool, while other squads were playing outdoor games at the stadium. The day in the camp flew by very quickly, after lunch the children went home.

18.06. – “Day of Cinema”.

The fourteenth day of the “Planets of Hope and Good” school camp is over. Today our teams have visited different places, where each received his own unforgettable portion of joy.The 1st and 5th teams watched the animated cartoon “Luka” in the Edem cinema, the 2nd, 3rd and 6th teams swam in the Neptune pool. And the 4th squad went to the “Journey of the Dinosaurs” in the IEC. The children returned happy and hungry, where a delicious lunch awaited them. Having gained strength after lunch, the detachments dispersed to their offices, where they watched the cartoon “Soul”.

17.06.- “Volunteers Day”.

The thirteenth day of the “Planets of Hope and Good” school camp has passed.After a vigorous morning exercise and a hot breakfast, the detachments dispersed to their activities. For the 1st detachment, a trip to the children’s library was planned for the literary quest “Lost Tales”, the 5th detachment also went to the children’s library. Gaidar on a magical journey “On the Yellow Brick Road”, squad 4 visited the Edem cinema on the animated cartoon “Luka”, and squad 2, 3 and 6 visited the Krasnoyarsk Regional Philharmonic, where they listened to a concert of the Volnitsa folk instrument ensemble with a program “Keys to Summer”.The squads returned to dinner, after which representatives from each squad took part in the “Mister Planet” competition. Among the six squads, the winner was Mikhail Ivantsov, a member of squad 4!

16.06 – “Day of Scientific Technologies”

The twelfth day of the “Planets of Hope and Good” school camp has passed. On this day, all the detachments went to the Drama Theater for the “Scarlet Flower”, the children really liked the fascinating performance.After lunch, counselors with children prepared unusual “Wish Trees”, where each squad tore off a piece of paper with a task and completed it. According to the results of the competition, the 6th squad won!

Day eleven: 15.06 – Motherland Day

Another day of the school camp “Planets of Hope and Good” has passed. This sunny morning in the camp, the detachments began in the fresh air with exercises, after which they went to the dining room for breakfast “to gain strength.” Various activities were planned for each squad today.Detachment 1 attended the fire safety event, Detachments 2 and 4 went on an excursion to the fire station, Detachment 3 went to the Zolotaya Rybka IEC, Detachment 5 – to the children’s library on the Reading Bench “In the sunny kingdom, in the book state …”, and 6th detachment – to the trauma park. Upon returning to school, the teams took part in sports competitions at the Stroitel stadium. The day in the detachments ended with solving crosswords on fire safety and an exhibition of drawings.

Day ten: 11.06 – “Visiting Russia”.

On the basis of MBOU “Secondary school number 11” passed the tenth day of the change of the school camp “Planets of Hope and Good”

The tenth day began with active morning exercises. And after a nutritious breakfast, the detachments dispersed on detachment affairs. 1 and 5 teams went to the swimming pool “Neptune”, 2, 3, 4, 6 teams visited the Drama Theater. After a hearty lunch, the detachments watched a concert dedicated to the “Day of Independence of Russia”, which was prepared by the vocal circle “Rhythm”, under the leadership of S. Ivantsova.V. Also in the camp there was a drawing competition “My Russia”.

10.06. – “Flower Day”

The ninth day of the school camp “Planets of Hope and Good” has passed. After the traditional exercises and a delicious breakfast, the detachments dispersed to various events. Squad 1 went to the children’s library at Skazkopanorama, Squad 2, 3, 4, 6 attended the performance of a fairy tale in the Puppet Theater, and Squad 5 was attended by guests from the Planet of Talents.The day at the camp ended with an exhibition of flowers and floral costumes made from junk material.

Eighth day 09.06. – “Day of Environmental Protection”

On this day, 2, 3, 4, 6 squads visited the Spherical Theater, 1 squad visited the children’s library on Walks through the fairy tales “There on unknown paths …”, and 5 squad at this time played outdoor games … Also, after a hearty dinner, the squads presented their charming participants to the Miss Planet contest.The girls performed various tasks: talking about themselves, showing curtsy, solving housework tasks, demonstrating vocal and dancing skills. As a result of the contest “Miss Planet” was a representative of the 3rd squadron.

08.06. – “Day of balloons”

On the basis of MBOU “Secondary School No. 11” was held the seventh day of the school camp “Planets of Hope and Good”.

Many interesting things were planned for the detachments on this day.After active exercises and a healthy breakfast, detachments 2, 3, 4, 6 went to an extraordinary concert of Group 77. Detachment 5 took a tram ride with a tour of their hometown, and detachment 1 visited the children’s library, where an hour of communication passed. “. After lunch, the counselors held a conversation in the detachments on the topic “Kindness will save childhood.”

Today our units had an unforgettable day. Detachments 1, 2, 3 and 6 watched the adventure cartoon Spirit about a wild mustang in the Eden cinema. Day 5: 05.06 – Poetry Day.

On the basis of MBOU “Secondary School No. 11” was held the fifth day of the school camp “Planets of Hope and Good”.

On this creative day, the children came up with fable poems, were engaged in various “planetary” affairs. They also did not forget about outdoor activities, in the detachments relay races were held between the teams, where the children showed their various physical qualities.

Day three: 03.06 “Friendship Day”

Day one: 06/01 – “Day of meetings and acquaintances”

Hurray! Here it is – the first day of school camp! Finally we met! The work of the school camp began with organizational issues. Children were introduced to the rules of conduct in the camp, its traditions and laws. The educators, together with the counselors, conducted a safety briefing.Then the children, together with the counselors, plunged into creativity: they had to come up with a name, a motto, an emblem and a corner of the detachment.
