The Long-Term Benefits of Summer Camp Experiences for Teens
Summer camps offer more than just a fun way to spend school holidays. They provide valuable experiences that can have lasting positive impacts on teenagers’ lives. Let’s explore some of the long-term benefits that summer camp experiences can offer:
Building Independence and Self-Reliance
How do summer camps foster independence? By being away from home and familiar surroundings, teens learn to make decisions for themselves, solve problems, and take care of their daily needs. This newfound independence can boost their confidence and prepare them for future challenges.
Developing Social Skills
Summer camps provide an ideal environment for teens to improve their social skills. Living and working with peers from diverse backgrounds helps them learn to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and build lasting friendships.
Exploring New Interests and Passions
Many summer camps, like Pali Adventures and iD Tech Camps, offer a wide range of activities that teens might not have access to at home or school. This exposure can help them discover new interests or passions that could influence their future academic or career choices.
Enhancing Leadership Skills
Summer camps often provide opportunities for teens to take on leadership roles, whether it’s leading a team in a camp game or mentoring younger campers. These experiences can help develop valuable leadership skills that will serve them well in the future.
Boosting Emotional Intelligence
Living in a community setting at camp helps teens develop empathy, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills. They learn to navigate complex social situations and manage their emotions effectively.
Fostering Resilience and Adaptability
Summer camps often present challenges and new situations that push teens out of their comfort zones. Overcoming these challenges helps build resilience and adaptability, crucial skills for success in adulthood.
Encouraging Physical Activity and Outdoor Appreciation
Many summer camps, especially those focused on outdoor adventures like Camp Robin Hood and Camp Twin Creeks, encourage regular physical activity and appreciation for nature. These experiences can foster lifelong habits of staying active and enjoying the outdoors.
Developing Practical Skills
Depending on the camp’s focus, teens can acquire practical skills that may be useful in their future lives. For example, learning coding at iD Tech Camps or marine conservation at Catalina Sea Camp can provide valuable knowledge for future academic or career pursuits.
Building Self-Confidence
Accomplishing new tasks, making friends, and overcoming challenges at camp all contribute to building self-confidence. This increased self-assurance can have a positive impact on all aspects of a teen’s life.
Creating Lasting Memories
The unique experiences and friendships formed at summer camp often become cherished memories that last a lifetime. These positive associations with learning and personal growth can inspire a lifelong love for adventure and self-improvement.
Summer camps provide a unique environment where teens can grow, learn, and challenge themselves in ways that may not be possible in their day-to-day lives. The skills and experiences gained at summer camp can have far-reaching effects, influencing personal development, academic success, and even future career paths. By choosing the right summer camp, parents can provide their teens with an invaluable opportunity for growth and self-discovery.

15 of the Best Summer Camps for Teens in Frederick
Summer camps for teens are so necessary in order to break up the monotony of staying inside and playing video games all day, every day!
However, when I talk about summer camps for teens, I get a little bit anxious.
Particularly, I keep thinking to myself: Has my 13 year old officially grown out of summer camp?
For example, when kids are little, it’s so easy to find a fun swim camp or vacation bible school or some sort of sport camp they will happily try out.
On the other hand, since my son is 13 now, he is way more ‘independent’ and has definite opinions as to what he will or will not do.
Summer Camps for Teens Who Won’t Get Bored
To clarify, mind you, I’m the mom and what I say still goes.
However, I really would like for my son to enjoy himself in whichever summer camp I decide to enroll him in.
And speaking of teens, I don’t know about your teen, but my teen changed dramatically, physically and personality-wise, between the ages of 12 and 13.
Sometimes it can be outright hard to know how to even talk to him or connect with him anymore.
As I’m typing this, I’m clicking the ‘Add to Cart’ button on Amazon for this book, “Connect With Your Teenager: A Guide To Everyday Parenting”.
What Not to Do
To further explain the cause of my summer camp sign-up anxiety, I’m going to tell you a little story.
Above all, Terri and I had wanted to find a summer camp that both of our boys could do together.
At this time, Terri’s son was around 14 and my son was around 10.
In spite of our efforts, we couldn’t find very many camps available that accommodated 10 and 14 year olds together.
As a result, we picked one that had a HUGE age range: 5 to 16 years of age.
Certainly, it didn’t occur to us that this was a big deal.
Not only was it a BIG DEAL that our 10 year old and 14 year old were grouped in with 5 year olds, but also, our boys were the ONLY teens there.
Indeed, our mom instincts were way off!
So much so, that the 14 year old continually called both of us all day long on the very first day of camp and was tempted to ride one of the horses from the camp all the way home.
Obviously, we made the decision to not make the boys continue with the camp for the rest of the week and we got our money back.
Undoubtedly, the big lesson here is, don’t enroll your teenager in a camp that isn’t specifically geared toward teens 13 years of age and up.
Just. Don’t. Do. It!
Meanwhile, several years later, our boys still talk about that terrible experience that one summer.

90,000 Work of schoolchildren during summer vacations: how to earn extra money for a teenager in summer
In 2019, my daughter Veronica graduated from the eighth grade. And over the summer I earned 56,000 R for a new iPhone.
Vera Grashchenkova
gave a teenage daughter a job
Author’s profile
When my daughter was little, every summer I sent her to her grandmother’s dacha. But in 2019 she was already 14 years old. I was afraid that she would start driving mopeds there, hanging out with dubious teenagers and making my grandmother nervous. Therefore, the option with a dacha has disappeared. No trips were planned either: good children’s camps were expensive, and we postponed family vacations until autumn. Staying idle in Moscow was boring, and I offered my daughter some money.
Veronica didn’t mind. She has long dreamed of an iPhone XR for 56,000 R, but I considered it overkill. Then she decided to make money on it herself, and at the same time – to gain valuable experience. As a result, Veronica got a job as an assistant counselor in a children’s city camp.
In this article I will tell you how teenagers can work legally and how everything was with us.Let me explain why I had to agree to a salary in an envelope and a full-time job. And I will describe what difficulties my daughter had because she was a teenager.
On this iPhone, my daughter earned 2.5 months
How a daughter could work under the law
According to the law, a teenager aged 14-18 can work only in his free time from school. And work should not harm health and morality. For example, it is forbidden to lift weights, work underground, in chemical plants and in casinos. You can, for example, distribute leaflets near the metro, work as a courier or post advertisements.
A teenager can get a job as a salesman or a cashier. But according to the law, he will not be responsible for the money entrusted to him. An exception is if he steals them deliberately or loses them under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Veronica could also work as a volunteer: helping the elderly and veterans, organizing sports events and concerts, planting trees at subbotniks. This expands the circle of friends and takes up free time. You can also get free tickets to events or infiltrate an organization where you plan to work later. But they don’t officially pay for volunteering.
How long can teenagers work
While studying
Up to 2.5 hours a day,
up to 12 hours a week
On vacation
Up to 5 hours a day,
up to 24 hours a week
While studying
Up to 3.5 hours a day,
up to 18 hours a week
On vacation
Up to 7 hours a day,
up to 35 hours per week
A teenager can sign an employment contract himself from the age of 14.But before the age of 16, the consent of the parent and the permission of the guardianship authorities are still needed. An exception is if he is 15 years old, but he graduated from grade 9 or is studying in an evening school, technical school or college. Veronica did not fit these conditions.
I learned that I can write consent in free form, permission is issued in social protection. Veronica was supposed to come there with me, bring a draft of an employment contract and write an application. The social security officer will check the documents and, if the job is suitable, issue a permit.
What to do? 03/13/18
How can a teenager get a job?
In addition to the consent of the parent and permission of custody, at work the teenager will be asked for the following documents:
- Passport.
- Certificate from the polyclinic in the form 086 / y with a note from the doctor “Suitable for work with age restrictions.”
- Employment record book, if any. If not, the employer will keep a work book in electronic form. If it is already electronic, then the employer will have access to it through the PFR website.
- SNILS. If not, the first employer will issue it himself.
Next, I will tell you why we failed to meet all these conditions.
How I was looking for a job for my daughter
In early May, I examined the website of the Youth Employment Center, Headhunter, Super Job and Avito. Everywhere I set filters “no experience”, “work for schoolchildren / students”, “part-time work”, “internship”. I also found two groups about work for teenagers on Facebook and Vkontakte.
I did not consider volunteering, because they do not pay for it.
Here are the vacancies that are traditionally offered to teenagers from 14 years old:
- Landscaper.
- Postman.
- Courier.
- Construction assistant.
- Janitor.
- Bicycle and scooter rental consultant.
- Posting ads.
- A promoter offering to taste products in a supermarket.
- Distributor of leaflets.
- Call center dispatcher in a private clinic.
- Seo trainee.
- Human Resources Trainee.
- Consultant in a clothing store.
The work was official everywhere, but the salary was small: 5000-15000 rubles a month. And I didn’t like the vacancies. I didn’t want Veronica to get a job as a courier and meet one-on-one with strangers. Working as a promoter or call center operator didn’t seem very smart. As a SEO trainee, she would sit at the computer all day. And Veronica herself did not like working as a consultant in a store.
I began to ask my acquaintances: suddenly someone knows where to arrange a teenager. I even considered unofficial work – if only Veronica liked it, was safe and well paid. And soon this option appeared.
My friend worked at a foreign language school. She said that every year a city summer camp is organized there, and an assistant counselor is needed there. In past years, schoolchildren and students were hired for this position.
The work suited my requirements, plus the school was not far from home. One branch is five minutes walk and the other is three metro stations away. I phoned the director, and in mid-May Veronica and I went for an interview.
There are many promoter vacancies at Avito for teenagers. For example, for the distribution of newspapers from 7 to 11 am they pay 400-450 R On “Headhunter” when searching for vacancies, you can select the filter “only available for applicants from 14 years old”
At the interview, the director asked Veronica about her studies and hobbies. And me – do I agree to have my daughter work.
Then the director told about the camp. It was for children 7-12 years old who stayed in Moscow for the summer. There they studied English, played, went on excursions and attended creative studios. The camp worked from early June to mid-August – there were only 5 shifts of 2 weeks each. Children were there on weekdays from 9:00 to 18:00.
The director said that the counselor needs an assistant – in the camp he is called a volunteer. This work is not under a contract, and permission from social protection is not needed – only my written consent. The director promised to give the salary in an envelope at the end of each shift. We had no other worthy options, so we had to agree to these conditions.
The director knew that according to the law, Veronica cannot work more than 5 hours a day. And she proposed a schedule from 9:00 to 13:00 with a payment of 500 R per day. But Veronica said she wants to work from 9:00 to 18:00. She understood that they would pay twice as much for this: 1000 R. The director warned that the work was responsible, difficult and would require a lot of energy and patience. But Veronica insisted on her own.
1000 R
received a daughter for work per day
We decided that my daughter will work the first and second shifts, but will miss the third. He will rest for 2 weeks and return for the fourth and fifth shifts. As a result, then she herself wanted to work for 2.5 months without a break.
Veronica made a good impression on the director, and she was invited to work on June 3.
No contract was concluded with Veronica. And I signed this consent. It says that the daughter will be a volunteer
How responsibilities were distributed in the camp
The director, administrators, teachers, counselor and volunteer – Veronica worked in the camp. The director was in charge of security. If someone got sick, poisoned or injured, the demand would be from her.
Administrators monitored the cleanliness and order in the room. The teachers taught English and organized entertainment: quests, creative studios, classes for studying the world around them, chemical experiments.
The counselor was a student of the last year of the institute. She monitored discipline, schedules, outdoor games and took the kids to a cafe for lunch. My daughter helped the counselor with all this.

Everything you wanted to know about children and money – in our newsletter twice a week along with other materials about money
My daughter’s responsibilities
Veronica’s working day began at 9:00. Parents brought their children. The group consisted of 15 people. The children were given breakfast: cereals with milk, cookies and tea. Serving and cleaning was supposed to be done by administrators, but only one of them did it. The rest left a pile of dirty dishes for Veronica.
Then the children went for an hour’s walk. The daughter played with them on the street, entertained, made sure that they did not run away and did not lose things.
At noon there was lunch in a cafe ten minutes walk from the school. Veronica and the leader accompanied the group and dined with them. The daughter ate at the expense of the camp.
During the day, the children had master classes, experiments, creative activities and an English lesson. Veronica handed out didactic materials, flashcards and helped to do creative assignments.
The work was in full swing. Veronica constantly brought something, carried away, cleaned, did crafts, tied shoelaces, wiped her noses and washed dishes. She calmed the children together with the counselor if they missed their mothers, scattered on the street or started to get mad.
In fact, Veronica was the second counselor. But because of her age, she was called a volunteer, worked without a contract and received three times less. Veronica understood this, but never complained. She took it all as training, loved the team and thought it was cool to work in the camp.
The daughter prepared glasses and poured water for chemical experiments She also helped the children to cope with creative tasks
What did the daughter like in the camp
On the first day, I myself accompanied Veronica to work and stayed to watch her. There was already a lesson in the class. When Veronica went there, she had a look as if she was going to a cage with tigers. But she took pictures for the lesson and began to distribute them to the children. Soon I realized that she was calm, understood her tasks and the students liked the lesson. And over time, Veronica began to get joy from her work.
Calm and well-mannered children became her favorites and energized. They did not need care, and the daughter communicated with them on an equal footing. She loved helping them with pageants, running a catwalk in newspaper suits, and watching them perform tricks in a talent show. She watched with interest how children’s love stories developed, and was worried when couples broke up after the change.
While working, Veronica improved her English as well. Some of the teachers were native speakers, and she loved to communicate with them. So she consolidated what she went through at school.
Veronica has good relationships with her colleagues. Internal disassembly did not concern her: she had to help everyone and coped well with it. The daughter is a non-conflict person, and she liked to go through this school of life.
She also spent a lot of time outdoors. For example, the last day of the shift was celebrated in a barbecue clearing: sausages were fried, danced and sang. With one group, the counselors arranged a holiday in the drizzling rain. But while the fire was being made, a downpour gushed in. The children put bags on their heads and ran to the camp. They came back wet through and through, in squelching sneakers, dried for a long time and wrapped themselves in blankets. But the prom was still unforgettable.
On rainy days, tents were erected in the camp and scary stories were told On a walk, Veronica helped the counselor play with the children.
Relations with wards. Veronica was 14, and her charges were from 7 to 12. And the children often said: “Who are you to tell us?” She had to rigidly build boundaries and prove her authority. Veronica explained that she was the director’s representative and that it was her responsibility to keep an eye on them. And those who do not listen to her will have to deal with the leadership. Basically it worked.
Constant vigilance. There were 15 people in the group. The counselor and Veronica found it difficult to keep track of the two of them, especially on the street.Children often ran away to play in other playgrounds. Then the counselor stayed with the guys, and Veronica was looking for fugitives throughout the area. Children usually found themselves nearby, but each time she was afraid that something would happen to them.
On the very first day, one boy quietly went home and did not warn anyone. He did not meet with his mother, and when she came for him, a terrible panic arose. It turned out that on the way home, the fugitive met a friend and played with her on the playground. They found him there after half an hour. The counselor and Veronica were reprimanded.
Once the children were taken on an excursion to Gorky Park. When they returned, they found that one boy was walking barefoot. He didn’t even remember how and where he left the shoes. It’s good that his mother took the situation with humor.
Difficult children. There were two cases when parents were given money back for the camp and asked to pick up their children. One boy beat the whole group, and one girl behaved antisocial and threatened everyone. For example, she said that next year she would take the place of Veronica and that she would vegetate on the street. The daughter simply did not react to such statements.
Amazing story 07/12/19
One student harmed another. Who will pay: parents or school?
On another shift, there was a boy who constantly spoke like a radio. The stream of words did not dry out for a minute. When his shift was over, Veronica sighed with relief.
There were also just naughty children in the camp. There was a stock of snacks and breakfast cereals in the kitchen, and the kids were stealing them all the time. Veronica could not keep track of this. And once the boys were playing ball right in the office and made a dent in the plasterboard ceiling. Their dads only laughed afterwards.
The attitude of the parents. The parents liked Veronica, they saw that the children were drawn to her. She was respected for working at the age of 14. But there were also those who showed that she was a service staff, not a teacher or a counselor. It was unpleasant for her, but she was just doing her duty and trying not to pay attention.
Fatigue. For 2.5 months of work from 09:00 to 18:00 Veronica was very tired. The director more than once offered her to rest, but she did not agree. My daughter wanted to earn money for an iPhone, but still could not imagine that instead of her there would be another volunteer in the camp.
The last week was the most difficult: the accumulated fatigue was taking its toll. Veronica came home and cried or went to bed right away. But in the end she reached the end.
The daughter rested only at the end of August, when the last shift ended. She still went to sleep with her grandmother. The temptations of dacha life did not frighten me anymore. I saw that Veronica has matured, strengthened her willpower and will think before doing something dangerous.
The daughter participated in all the children’s activities and sometimes could not even sit down. During the walk, Veronica found it difficult to keep track of a group of 15 children, Veronica was looking for a common language with completely different children. Sometimes it got tired
What did the work in the camp
give
Veronica was lucky with her job. Of course, it was unofficial, and the salary was given in an envelope. But she was interesting, safe and close to home.
Veronica’s friends didn’t have a good summer job. One traveled to the other end of Moscow and handed out leaflets near the metro. She stood on her feet for 8 hours a day, and received 15,000 rubles a month. The second worked as a courier in a law firm: she traveled all over the city 5 hours a day, received 25,000 rubles a month. The third was a consultant in a clothing store: she worked 10 hours a day, received 30,000 rubles a month.
The salary of the last two girls was higher than that of Veronica. But they didn’t get so much useful out of their work. This is what my daughter’s job in the camp gave.
56,000 R
my daughter earned in 2.5 months
Experience. Veronica has learned to find an approach to different people, and now her patience can be envied. It cannot be said that this summer helped her decide on her future profession. But she realized that it is more pleasant for her to communicate with people than to sit at the computer.
Veronica also received a letter of thanks, where it is said that she worked as a volunteer. This letter and volunteering experience will come in handy if she wants to enter a foreign university: it is appreciated there.
Opportunities for future side jobs. During the third shift, the mother of a 9-year-old girl offered Veronica a part-time job. She brought her daughter to our home half an hour before class and asked to sit with her. The girl quietly played games on the phone, and then went with Veronica to the camp. For this, her mother paid 1000 R a week.
In the autumn, after the camp, the parents invited Veronica to sit with their children.Babysitting paid 300 RUR per hour. But if in the camp Veronica was an authority, here she was a person hired by her parents. And the children behaved worse. In addition, the parents often stayed at a party after midnight, Veronica was very tired, and the next day was lost. In general, the daughter sat with other people’s children only a couple of times, and then refused.
In winter, the camp counselor invited her to work as an animator at the Christmas tree in the Izmailovsky Kremlin. Veronica helped lead a master class on making caramel. For a day of work from 9:00 to 21:00, she received 3000 R.
Lean attitude to money. Veronica has stopped spending money on nonsense like popsockets or unnecessary cosmetics. And I realized that you can get what you want only by making an effort. At the end of the summer, she bought herself an iPhone XR.
Veronica will attach this letter of thanks to her documents if she wants to enter a foreign university
Khanty-Mansiysk | We tell about an unusual summer vacation for children from Ugra
This summer 120 children in Khanty-Mansiysk are fighting for artifacts with unusual properties. To get them, the guys perform various tasks. This is how the summer plot and game change of the children’s camp “Patriot of the Fatherland” at school №6 named after Sirin takes place.
Run after the rabbit
For example, Princess Nesmeyana was the keeper of the artifact of joy. He did not help her much, and she was ready to give the jewel if the inmates of the camp could please her. For this, the children decided to arrange a costume show, a fashion show, and the costumes were made from waste materials: garbage bags, cardboard, colored paper.
– We have tried to use recycled materials for the collection and give them a new life. The event was called “ Overseas Fashion “, according to the plot, our children showed costumes that do not really exist, – said the teacher-organizer Yulia Blinova. When creating the collection, children were inspired by folk tales. They succeeded in making Nesmeyan happy. The guys appeared before her in the images of royalty in wide, flowered dresses, riding horses or clad in plate armor, though made of cardboard, from head to toe.In such vestments, you can go to the dragon … also made of cardboard.
The guys have already collected several artifacts. The rabbit is a symbol of faith in miracles, the arrow is a symbol of accuracy and goal achievement. A bag with their native Ugra land gives them strength (like Ilya Muromets). Also, children have a knot of friendship and shells of a secret tribe: if you put them to your ear, you can hear the lullaby of the sea. There is also a doll with a green heel on the shelf – this is a gift from a princess who accidentally drank a magic elixir.
Anyone can touch the treasures of the camp. They are on the table in the hallway of the sixth school. And next to it there is a stand with diamonds, large and small (paper). This is a kind of rating of units, who will have the most diamonds – he will receive the main prize. Which? Until the end of the shift – July 17 – no one will know.
Start with the anthem
In the summer camp of school №6 in Khanty-Mansiysk, children are engaged in creativity, attend various circles, events.
– We go on excursions and attend classes. Most of all I like to weave baubles from thread on cardboard and walk in the Samarovskiy Chugas, – said Nastya Matveychuk from the first squad. The camp works with its social partners: the house of folk art, the art museum and the library of Ugra.
– There are very interesting events here. For example, we went on an excursion to the Igoshev Museum. I remember him most of all, – said Nadezhda Zotova from the fifth detachment. Since the camp is called “ Patriot of the Fatherland “, on the lines, the children solemnly sing the Anthem of Russia, participate in various events and from childhood learn the laws of their state. Preventive conversations are conducted by invited employees of the traffic police, the prosecutor’s office and the investigative committee, inspectors of the juvenile department under the heading “Legal Bulletin”.
In general, patriotic education in Ugra is one of the priorities of youth policy. For example, in Nizhnevartovsk, at the children’s art school No. 2, during the summer creative shift, children were given lectures and preventive talks on how to behave on the river bank, road safety, rights and obligations of a citizen of Russia.
Since 2021, Ugra has joined the federal project “Patriotic education of citizens of the Russian Federation” within the framework of the national project “Education”, and special attention is paid to this topic in summer camps.
Summer in virtuality
In summer, the children of Khanty-Mansiysk have the opportunity to learn a lot and learn a lot. For example, the state library of Ugra invites pupils of children’s camps, and indeed all visitors, to immerse themselves in virtual reality with the help of a local history VR workshop. It was developed at the expense of the governor’s grant by the library and the center for additional education “Good Deed”.
– With the help of VR technologies, controlling the console, children can virtually walk around our institution, see city sights and a camp of indigenous peoples, – said librarian Maxim Yarkov. Children from different camps visit the workshop and ask how they can sign up and come on their own. The library has a schedule for the whole summer. On open days, anyone can learn how modern technologies work, draw their own cartoon in a children’s studio (then you can download your creation to a USB flash drive, watch it on the library website or on a YouTube channel), and also learn programming.Kids are allowed to classes even from six years old, if they know how to handle a computer.
All information and schedule of events are published on the library website.
After the change – to the ropes
If your children and grandchildren have already found all the artifacts and mastered modern technologies, the whole family will soon be able to visit the new sports ground in the city. In the ethnographic museum “Torum Maa” of Khanty-Mansiysk, on the occasion of the Day of Indigenous Peoples (August 9), a rope park “Kasne Maa” will open.Translated from Mansi – “a place for competitions.”
– Indigenous people are athletic and healthy people. We already have a hunter’s trail in the museum, and the rope park will be its continuation and will attract people who have never visited “ Torum Maa “, – said Artur Latypov, director of the Ugra culture department. According to him, the plans are to provide every visitor to the museum who bought a ticket, a discount on visiting the rope park. The space is designed for families, people of all ages. The park has 32 stages and four tracks. Everyone will be able to choose a rope route based on their age and physical capabilities. And for the youngest visitors there is a climbing wall.
Note that the project is being implemented with the support of the regional department of culture, in cooperation with the Vostykhoi community of indigenous peoples of the North and the Salvation of Yugra public organization. The rope park opens just in the last month of summer, when many children’s camps have already completed their work.
By the way
Another interesting area of work of the district librarians is acquainting young readers with the presidential library and the video lectures that it conducts.
– The institution is located in St. Petersburg and sends the regions a plan for the year, which we send to schools and libraries in the district. We also provide virtual access to it, – said Maxim Yarkov.

90,000 Conflict between Semin and Bykov, Alexander Semin was expelled from the Russian national team, Semin was expelled from the national team – November 10, 2021
When you start recalling Alexander Semin’s career in the national team, most of the positive moments immediately come to mind: in particular, the gold world championship 2008, in which the Krasnoyarsk hockey pupil scored 13 (6 + 7) points in 9 matches and scored a double in the historic final against the Canadians. But for the national team, Semin was not always a hero. For example, a year before the triumphant World Cup, he was expelled from the first training camp of the Russian team due to a two-hour delay in Novogorsk.
It all happened on April 16, 2007. In preparation for the home world championship, Vyacheslav Bykov’s team held a training camp in Novogorsk. Most of the players had already arrived at the location of the national team, and all were waiting for only four hockey players from overseas: Andrei Markov and three Alexandrov – Ovechkin, Semin and Frolov. And three of the four NHL players listed above arrived on time. Only Alexander Semin was detained.

One of the coaches of the national team, Sergei Nemchinov, said that all Russian hockey players playing in North America had a training date (April 16) announced on March 10.
“I personally spoke with everyone. It seems to me that in the month that you have, you can find a ticket for the required flight so as not to be late. So Alexander found out about the date of arrival in the national team not in a day or two, but in more than a month. When I called Semin on April 15, he told me that he was with his parents in Krasnoyarsk and would not be able to arrive on time. When I asked why, he replied that he had just been informed that he had to arrive on the sixteenth. Although I personally spoke about this on March 10. Why was Ovechkin, with whom he plays in the same club, was aware of when to come to Novogorsk, but not Semin? In general, such a motivation was a little strange to hear. We offered him to exchange a ticket, but Alexander could not do this ”, – said Nemchinov.
As a result, the coaching staff of the Russian national team made a collegial decision to expel Semin from the national team. When Alexander once again called Nemchinov, next to him was the head coach of the national team Vyacheslav Bykov, who picked up the phone from Sergei and personally announced the decision to the hockey player.
“Of course, he was eager to join the team, but the decision had already been made. You need to understand that no NHL player will ever allow himself to be late, say, to his club’s training camp.I have always told the guys that as soon as you get into the national team, here the interests of the national team are above all and it is necessary to work according to the planned schedule. The same situation with Viktor Kozlov is indicative. The player informed us ahead of time that he would not be able to perform at the World Championship and there were no questions to Vita, ” – concluded Nemchinov.

According to father Alexander, when Nemchinov called his son on April 15 and asked if he would arrive at the start of training the next day, the whole family began to look for friends who could help them get a ticket for the morning flight. But nothing came of it.
“Late. The training began at 6.30 pm, and the plane in Moscow landed at 8.30 am. I admit that there is a certain amount of my fault. But I called the national team, warned that I might be late for the first training session. But they decided so … Did I have a desire to play for the national team? Of course! I really wanted to compete at the World Championships! I have always strived to play for the national team, always responding with pleasure to suggestions. It makes no difference to me what the tournament is: the World or European Championship, or the Baltika Cup! You see, since childhood I have always been rooting for our team, I had my own idols. Before, I never even dreamed of getting into the Russian national team. And when he got there, he gave everything to the team. And now … “, – Semin lamented.
Alexander also said that Nemchinov called him on April 15 at 23:00 Krasnoyarsk time. Semin immediately explained to the coach that he had already bought a ticket for 19 o’clock the next day, and in response he heard that he urgently needed to change it in order to fly out in the morning. But at the box office of the airport there were no free tickets for this time. At the same time, Semin agreed that he had been warned about the date of the collection in advance.
“Even when Nemchinov flew to America in March, it was this number that was named. But nobody specified the exact time. And I flew to Moscow on the 16th. Nemchinov informed me that the training would be at 18 o’clock on that Sunday call. But that there will be such sanctions if I’m late, he didn’t warn you, ”, Semin said.

From this whole story, a completely logical and logical question immediately arises – why did Ovechkin’s partner not immediately take a ticket for the morning flight? Was he sure that the training camp and the first training session would take place in the afternoon, so he took the evening flight without hesitation? After all, it didn’t cost him anything just to play it safe, to act more professionally and arrive in the morning of the appointed day.
As a result, Semin, upon his arrival in Moscow, learned that he had been unhooked from the national team.
“After a conversation with head coach Vyacheslav Bykov, when they told me that they didn’t need my services, I had an idea to stay in Moscow, to go to Novogorsk – maybe something could be changed. I phoned Mark Gundler, my agent, from the airport. As far as I know, he contacted either Bykov or Nemchinov and called me back, saying that the decision had been made and nothing could be changed.I immediately flew home “, – said Semin.
And the head coach of the national team Vyacheslav Bykov commented on the situation as follows:
“We are normal, adequate people, and if a person had told us in advance:“ I tried, but could not, ”there would be no problems. We explained ourselves with Radulov, who had tests in the club. But when you advise a player to behave in a certain way, but he ignores your advice, it means that he can set you up in another situation.Such qualities should not be present in our team ”.

According to Bykov, the leadership of the national team advised him to take another ticket, and then tell him whether it was possible to do it or not. But Semin never called back.
“We could not forgive this. At the same time, I want to emphasize that the doors to the national team are not closed in front of Semin. If he wants to play at the next World Cup – for God’s sake! Do not misunderstand me: I have nothing against Semin personally. But I am against the attitude towards the national team that was shown in this situation ”, – concluded Bykov.
At the home World Cup, the Russian national team took only third place, losing to the Finnish national team in the semifinals. Who knows, maybe Semin would have helped the national team reach the final at that tournament? However, history does not tolerate the subjunctive mood. We saw the importance of Alexander for the Russian national team already at the next world championship, and it was the striker who was expelled a year ago that helped our team win the first gold of the world championship in the last 15 years.
